188.0. "Life in a Haunted House" by ELWOOD::MCCARREN () Mon Aug 11 1986 17:04

A friend of ours with terminal lung cancer came to stay with us
this past spring. We all knew that she would die in our house; in
fact, we took care of her until the bitter end, which was during
the Memorial Day weekend. Luckily, we managed to get all of her
relatives and friends to visit her before she died, and she was
surrounded by loved ones when she died (it's a bizarre experience
to be with somebody at the end of their life.)

Anyway, now the interesting part. Since she died, we have experienced
several strange, unexplainable things. Our cats (all five of them)
are less interested in the second floor of our house, even though
before Mary died they spent most of their time upstairs. After a
discussion with my SO, in which she claimed Mary's spirit was in
the house and I tried to refute her, Mary's picture toppled over
as I walked by it (very softly, I might add). Several other incidents
like this have happened, and we can't explain any of them.

Has anybody else been through this experience? If her spirit is
in the house, does anybody know how we can tell if it's good or
    evil? Any recommendations?

    Ed.

_If_ it is her spirit, and if she knew you'd done your best to
surround her with loved ones, then the chances are any manifestations
    are not evil.

Tradition has it that animals, and in particular, cats, are extremely
sensitive to some paranormal events, therefore, assuming your
conjecture that you've acquired a ghost, their behavior follows
    logically.

    What to do?

According to some theories of spiritism (I am not a spiritist, but
I know the theories), the reason that the ghost is there is because
something is preventing her from moving on. this can be likened
to a form of shock, where the person is in something of a daze.

If it were an evil spirit (or equivalent), then some sort of exorcism
ritual would be in order. This would, however, be unfair or cruel
to someone whose presence is not malicious.

One avenue would be to find a sensitive who could form a communication
link to the discarnate entity. Usually, according to theory, that can
act to break the shock. Once rthe spirit realizes the true situation
and that those she's left behind, as it were, still care for her,
she can be helped in moving on to the next stage (whatever you believe
    that is).

P.S.: I don't know that a proifessional medium would be a good choice
for that; something along the lines of a shaman would be ideal.

Yes, I agree with Steve - that if she was a basically good person
before she died, and she knew you did your best for her, and that
she was surrounded by loved ones before she died, she is probably
not a malicious presence now. Of course, there is the possibility
that this is not actually her - but some entity pretending to be
    her.

How exactly does she manifest herself? Moving objects? Does she
    do anything helpful? Harmful?

A shaman, or possibly, someone who specializes in talking to discarnate
spirits (I know of such a person, but she is in Colorado). There
is a possibility that either she doesn't realize that she's dead.
Another possibility is that she loves you too much to leave you.
In any case, it sounds like she needs help to go on.

I am a bit curious bout a few things here. Was your friend aware
of your interest in the paranormal or afterlife? Was she also
interested in the possibility of life after death.

Could it not be possible that your friend is in some way trying
to give you the opportunity to develop that interest by giving
you that "contact" that you need to communicate?

    Any other opinions on this
