108.0. "Reaction To This File's Subject Matter?" by PEN::KALLIS () Fri Apr 11 1986 18:20

A file like this, like the "occult" section of a bookshop, attracts
all kinds of things, from the sublime to the absurd. However, there
is a problem, albeit not an earth-shaking one.

Some noters here like to exchange experiences.

    Some like to speculate.

    Some ask advice.

Some try to analyze reports and come to paranormal or mundane
conclusions about them. A perusal if the index, much less the base
notes and responses, shows all of the above types are amply represented
    herein.

Whjile I'm not The Moderator, I certainly have been a reasonable
contributor. My question, therefore, is whether there are any areas
we've either been neglecting or going overboard in.

    Any comments would be welcome.

    RE: .0

I think we've been doing a pretty good job of handling all of the
things that people are doing/wanting from this notes file. Most
of the replies to speculations and advice have been reasonable and
respectful of other peoples (often conflicting) beliefs.

In the exchange of experiences most people seem to be willing to
accept other people's experiences. Questions seem to be relevant
and thoughtful. Often these types of conversations will extend
into a mail conversation where one can feel more free to express
him/herself to one person. I have made a lot of friends through
this type of thing, particularly in this notesfile.

108.2I'm developing a great bibliography, hereNATASH::BUTCHARTFri Apr 11 1986 19:0813
One feature of this notesfile I am enjoying is the constantly
expanding reading list I'm making up. It's great to get recom-
mendations on relevant books and references.

Along these lines, more information on professional psychics,
astrologers, Tarot readers, etc. would be of interest,
particularly if one is looking for a specific experience. Or is
that type of thing better handled offline, in more personal
communications? Since I'm new here, I don't know what people
    feel about this.

As I mentioned in the introduction (1.0), I had a dream that I should
start this notes file and call it psychic phenomena. It has been
all I could have hoped for and more. In the beginning I was a little
nervous that it would be too weird for the DEC community. That
feeling has long since vanished. I hope it continues to grow as
    it has been.

I greatly enjoy this notefile, it's usually the first thing reviewed
when I get to work, (after tea, of course). And from 1800 miles
of network, that can be a slow matter. My major concern has
been that the scientific side of the house may be stifling some
replies by certain logical assumptions which may reflect on the
more personal accounts. I do feel that the intent is benign, not
aimed at hurting anyone. My background of math and chem degrees,
and my time as a programmer has forced me to think logically, however,
I still find that my intuition has played an increasingly large
    role in my belief structures.

All in all, I'm not arguing against the scientific side of the house,
I'm merely asking that both sides allow the free and easy interchange
of information, both personal and impersonal. Stop and consider
    your wording.

Thanks for allowing me my expression.

    Indeed!

Ref .3 To weird for DEC ??? I think that's what makes this
NOTES file so great - something for everyone.
Ref. 2 I too would like to see more info on what noter .2 is
saying. Where you can find good readings or to avoid
possible bad ones. I'm enjoying this file very much.
I would also like to hear more on the Seth material as
             someone had prevoiusly mentioned.

By the way, does anyone know of a good crystal ball reader in the
    Boston area ?

This is definitely my favorite file! I haven't even finished,
as I've started from #1 and been perusing on through. I even
  found an old friend!

Perhaps a note should be started on good fiction books or stories
on any of these subjects. I enjoy a good fantasy...

The benefit/drawback of this file is that the replies are written
with a fair amount of thought behind them. This is reasonable
considering the subject matter. The problem is that you can't just
pop into it, see if something interesting's come in, and then leave,
quickly. You have to invest your time to get anything out of it.

With a full work load I haven't had the time to get to this file
every day. But every time I put time into this file, I always feel
    better for it.

    Thank you,
    Tom
