The phenomena do not require "haunting" in terms of departed spirits.
Please see the note "detecting a presence." There are various phenomena
that could produce the effects you describe. Lack of teenagers mitigates
against poltergeist phenomena. Feline sensitivity suggests a discarnate
entity of some sort, but the exact nature is unclear. A bit more of the
history of the house might be elpful.

This sounds like a classic haunting, and I would say that there is a good
chance that you've got the genuine article.

A naturalistic explanation, probably more than one, *is* possible, however,
and only a careful investigation would resolve the issue. I don't present
this alternative to dismiss your story: both alternatives must be considered
open.

The explanation that occurs to me? (Glad you asked.) Vibrations, such as
can be caused by "water-hammers" (air in the pipes) would seem to be able to
explain most of it. Both sub- and ultrasonics can cause the psychological
effects including uneasiness (human and feline), nightmares and a sense of
"presence" (much of our feelings of "people" being in a room comes from
subliminal hearing). The fall of the ceiling and the various forms of
"knocking" would have a similar origin. Psychics tend to be people who are
more effected by "unconscious" influences (both psychic AND natural), so this
would explain both your friends greater discomfort and association with
flames. Odor is probably the least conscious of the major senses, and
charring as extensive as you say would leave an unconscious clue for your
friend which would probably literally be available for centuries.

As I said, I don't know whether this explanation is true, or whether what
you've got is a true haunting, but it's a great story.

Ray,

go for the screenplay, and get a movie version out for next Christmas.

seriously, I would write down 5 of the most vivid scenes that you remember,
and expand on them, developing the conversation as best as you can while
remaining true to the characters. It would not only help in the discovery of
something larger than life, it would help you retain the memory of that time
in your life. Kinda like a diary, only more detailed.

RE: .3

The usual explanation for the uneasiness (and illness if sustained) that
subsonics causes is not in terms of brainwaves, but in terms of the resonant
frequencies of various body organs. The exact effect would depend on the
precise frequency (which organ(s) get shook), duration, envelope (e.g.
any pulsation) and intensity, as well as circumstances (emotions tend to be
interpreted on the basis of environment, the perception of the house shaking
would be likely to make a large difference in how you reacted to your small
intestine being shaken). Although it is less well documented, ultrasonics
just above the hearing threshold also seem to be able to cause discomfort
and anxiety. Your familiarity with the subjective experience of subsonics
does, however, considerably decrease the probability of this explanation being
correct.

The only phenomena that you described which doesn't fit this explanation is
the stereo being on (I assume that it didn't have a bad switch, to your
knowledge, that occasionally turned on or off when thumped). Were there other
phenomena which don't fit this theory? One of the problems in investigating
hauntings and poltergeist phenomena is a shift in peoples interpretation of
events. Once weird things start to happen, they start responding to events
by saying "there's another one", rather than "gee, I forgot to turn the
stereo off." Furthermore they become more sure with time about the abnormality
of a particular event: this is an intrinsic characteristic of human memory,
not a personal weakness -- we remember models of events not the events
themselves. I am certainly not saying that this is what happened in this case
(I still think that this is an excellent candidate for a true haunting, whatever
that is), but HOW sure are you that you didn't leave the stereo on?

If it weren't for the stereo I would say this was a fairly classic haunting
story, in so far as the manifestations all sound like the replay of the
previous tragedy (supposing there were one).

A fairly common explanation of this type of thing is that a moment of extreme
emotion (violent death, or injury, or even a near escape from burning to
death, as this might have been) somehow impregnates itself on the fabric of
the scene. I have heard this thoery referred to as the "stone tape" theory,
in that the stones record the emotional events in the way a tape recorder
 records sound.

The Stereo however doesn't fit that pattern: it is closer to a poltergeist
phenomenon. Are you sure you didn't forget the stereo?

I wonder: the events grew steadily towards a crescendo (in that they
eventually drove you away, or contributed to your leaving). This implies a
more active malevalence than implied by the stone tape theory; almost the
presence of an "evil spirit". Could someone subconsciously have been trying
to drive you out (the landlady, or one of her relatives?)

If this really is a case of an "evil spirit," a psychic sensitive could be
very useful to detect it. If an Indian burial ground was involved, it's
also possible that the tribal shaman put a defensive mechanism in linkage
with the location, and the odd happenings are manifestations of that pro-
tector: if so, the "spirit" needn't be evil.

23.9What are they?NATASH::BUTCHARTMon Apr 28 1986 19:359
What is it that "haunts" haunted houses? Actual discarnate entities,
or just powerful energy fields from intense experiences? I suppose
that some cases could be one or the other. I've had no experiences
with classic hauntings, but have felt the oppression/aura of a house
lived in for a long time, in which many had lived and died. I never
felt that there were actual presences there, but more like the "soot"
that would be left all over everything after something like a fire.

23.10Could be several thingsCFIG1::DENHAMSpringtime in the RockiesMon Apr 28 1986 20:2315
There is more than one possibility. They may be the souls of the
dead who either don't want to leave for one reason or another, or
haven't realized that they are dead "you know, it all happened so
    fast".

The second possibility is that the former occupants have left their
aura in the place. It works on the same principle that some psychics
use to tell about a person through an object that was theirs (a
piece of jewlery, clothing, etc). Depending on the type of person(s)
involved this can be either pleasant or unpleasant.

Another possibility is that they are some other type of being, such
as elemental spirits, demons, angels, or the like.

23.18Eerie houseORION::HERBERTWhat a long strange trip its been!Wed May 06 1987 15:0564
A recent note reminded me of an experience I had when I was in high
school. There was a place in Whittier, California called Turnbull
Canyon. The road leading up into the hills was not heavily
travelled, but was a popular place for kids to go parking...and
exploring (since it had an eerie reputation).

There were many stories, but most of them spoke of members of a
Satanic cult who might be seen on the road just before dawn, and
it was said that they had killed cats and dogs as sacrafices.
There was also a story about a murder, and once when my boyfriend
and I were caught "parking" on a hill in that area, the policeman
told us that it was a dangerous area because another couple's car
had been pushed over the edge while they were parked, and still
    inside. Who knows.

There was a very strange house at the top of the road. Some
people said it was vacant because no one would buy it. Others
said that a dwarf lived there.

Being a curious and adventurous person towards the unknown and
haunted houses, I drove through Turnbull Canyon several times with
friends...as we attempted to see something unusual. The street
light shining on the house was green...which added to the weird
look of the house...and no other street lights were that color.
We always viewed the house from our car, and shined a flash light
or our headlights on it (when we went at night). There were no
other houses nearby, and no way were we going to get out of the
    car...even in the daylight.

This house was very strange. It was one-story, very oddly shaped,
and looked like it was made out of adobe. It was all white, and
the windows were oddly shaped too and you couldn't see through them.
There was a large adobe block/partition standing several feet in
front of where I would assume the front door was located, and on it
was painted a large black pot. There were also some words that we
had trouble reading, but some words we did make out were "Olde...
    Kettle".

The front yard reminded me of a cemetary. It was dark, had some big
unusual shaped stones jutting out of the ground, and the house and
yard were completely surrounded by a tall black iron fence with
points on top. We never saw any light, or signs of life, coming from
the house in all the times we drove by to look at it.

One night, we had a real scare. There were three of us girls, going
to check out the house. I think we drove by once and turned around to
shine our headlights on the house better. As we came back by (seconds
later) there was a dummy propped up against the fence! It was dressed
in clothes and had no legs. It looked grotesque. There was NO ONE
else around, and nowhere nearby that anyone could have been hiding.

We all screamed and went speeding by in terror, and as we passed by,
I saw a large black dog, which looked like a doberman, behind the
fence. (I had never seen a dog there before.) We very quickly turned
the car around to get a better look (in our moment of terror :^)) and
see if we could catch anyone playing a trick on us. It took only a
few seconds for us to turn around, but the dummy was gone, and so was
    the dog!

I guess we conjured up the excitement we were looking for!

    Hope you enjoyed that story,

    Jerri

    Ray -

How long did you stay there? Was the rent very low (as if the landlady
had a hard time renting it, and provided a reason to put up with
    "oddities")?

Just curious - I know it would be hard for me to move from a nice,
cheap place because of bad feelings and things I couldn't really
prove had happened. (At least it would have been hard before I started
    reading this notes file)!

This isn't an experience that happened to me but a story about a
house that my mother lived in when she was a little girl.

My mom lived with her mother and 7 brothers and sisters on the first
floor of a two family home in E. Templeton, MA. (I believe that
is where the house is) The owners were a woman named Mae and her
husband. Mae was a confirmed lunatic. She died her hair purple,
green, pink, etc. and chased her husband around the house with
a butcher knife. She would often try and break into my grandmom's
apartment too, so they would have to put the washing machine and
other large pieces of furniture in front of the door to prevent
Mae from coming in. But the one main thing that Mae did was that
EVERY night before going to bed, she would walk around her apartment
    and slam every door.
Mae died a few years back and the house was sold. To this day,
the couple that bought the house and people that have visited there
have heard, late at night; door slams.
Even after she's died, Mae is still crazy.

23.22A sort-of haunted houseLAIDBK::LARSONThu Jul 02 1987 23:5315
I find "haunted houses" very interesting. I grew up in Santa Barbara,
a town with some very old homes. My aunt lived in a 100+ year old
house. The first time I ever went over to my aunt's house after
they bought it, I got the feeling that it was 'evil'. I don't know
why, but most of the family felt uncomfortable there. Although my
aunt never reported actually seeing a ghost, there were a lot of
very strange things going on. Such as lights going on by themselves,
stereos going on, etc. My aunt does not where any sort of makeup
or perfume. However, in one spot in the master bedroom, it was always
'cold', and you would get a strong whif of flowery perfum. My aunt
was convinced that a old female ghost resided there.

I know it is not a very exciting haunted house, but I was always
facinated by it (Although I refused to ever spend one night there).

RE: .23

In contemporary a "poltergeist" is an apparent "spirit" which
accompanies a particular person or group of people, as opposed to
one (a haunt) which is associated with a place. If the phenomena
did not accompany your aunt and uncle to their new apartment it
    was not technically a poltergeist.

An irony (perhaps deliberate, perhaps just sloppy) of the movie
Poltergeist is that it did not involve a poltergeist -- it involved
a haunt. They even carefully explained the difference.

The association with adolescents as the "focus" of poltergeist activity
is strong but not absolute. Certainly in a case such as you mentioned,
ones first suspician as to the identity of a presumed poltergeist
focus would be the adolescents. But not all foci are adolescents.
There's one case where an investigator found a classic poltergeist
scenario. A thirteen year old son, forced to be the "man" of the
family because of the desertion of the father. He was confidently
identified as the focus. As usual, after a few weeks or months
    the activity died down.

Then, a few years later, it started up again. It would seem that
when her son went away to college, the mother once again felt deserted
    and betrayed and ...

The only way to establish exactly who the focus of poltergeist
phenomena is, is to establish who is present at all (actually, for
    technical reasons, most) manifestations.

The association of poltergeist with emotional difficulties
(specifically alienation and repressed anger) is a very attractive
and plausible theory, but has not really been established. The
problem is that, almost by definition, *all* adolesents suffer from
alienation and repressed anger. If you look for it, you will find
it. There does seem to be a pattern, including in the cases where
an adult is the apparent focus of activity, but its real easy to
find patterns where there is only randomness (its much safer to mistake
a bunch of random shadows of leaves as the stripes of a tiger than
    vice versa).

Although poltergeists are generally harmless (other than the emotional
turmoil they cause), sometimes the pranks can get quite viscious.
If the "repressed anger" theory is correct, than the purpose of
the phenomena is to hurt and disrupt. Generally, haunting phenomena
are also harmless, at least physically, so one really can't distinguish
    on that basis.

In any case, my point was (and you'll note that I described it as
a nit) that *as described* (i.e., the phenomena being associated
explicitly in the description with a location) it was a haunting
being described. Clearly, only a careful investigation can
    definitively distinguish between the two.

I live in a haunted house now. (I think?)

It is a 150 year old victorian farmhouse of grand intentions
and not much care until we moved in. We are *slowly*
(as time and resources permit) restoring/rennovating.
We restore wherever feasable, rennovate where not.

When we first moved in, we both would awaken every once
in a while to lights moving across the bedroom. We both
attributed this to headlights of cars going by out front,
since the master bedroom faces the road.

We *did* notice that the closet door in the bedroom refused
to stay shut, but you know old houses.

Well, one night when I woke up to the light show, I realised
that there was no engine noise. Windows were open and
you *can* hear cars very clearly at all other times as
they cruise by. So, I reached over and ever so gently
(read that death grip!) woke up my husband. He is one
of those distressing people who wake up totally silently,
no moad, no groan, no nothing...they just open their eyes.

So, he opens his eyes and looks expectantly at me. (This
had better be *real* good sweety...) And I asked:

"Do you hear a car engine?"

         "No?"

         "Well....?"

As soon as we got up, the light went away. We investigated
thouroughly, even went outside, and found nothing. We
noticed that the closet door was open again.

So, we experimented. Closet hooked shut....you get some
kind of a show. Closet open...no show. So, I started
really lloking at the wall structure upstairs (we had
only been working downstairs up until then) and I found
that the original walls were knee walls that made up the
back walls of the closet. The straight walls that form
the front of the closet (and room walls now) were definately
         much later construction.

There *is* a *mild* cold spot in the back of the closet
which I (to my embarassment...I am usually not this slow)
missed when we bought the place.

She (yes someone finally saw her...not me, I talk to her,
but I do not see her) has black hair worn up and a white
day dress of the late 1800's type...no bussle but a bow
affair riding the rump. She also taps people on the head
(gently in a friendly manner) if they sit in a certain
place in the house. We do *not* tell anyone where, since
it would be impossible to tell if it were really happening
if people knew what to expect. She is pretty predictable.
Sit there for more than 10 minutes or so and she will
come and lean on the chair and pat you. Sort of like
she wanted to join in the social hour?

She is altogether delightful. We think she had a cradle
in that corner of the bedroom and does not like to have
it shut off from the rest of the room. She also seemed
much concerned over what we were doing to her house. so
I told her. I laid all the drawings out and held this
(in retrospect somewhat zany) conversation with the air
at large about what we wanted to do and she stopped the
light shows altogether. (We plan to put the knee-walls
         back into the Master Bedroom.

About a month after I "revealed" our house plans to her,
I had a dream about a rock garden sitting on the far side
of the house. The site was at that time completely over-run
with bamboo and locust trees. You had no hint that there
was anything there but scrub forest. But. being a trusting
soul I went out with rakes and saws and uncovered the
rock garden with winding paths and all.

Several old-timers in town have remarked that they never
knew there had been a rock garden at this house. One
gentleman was so interested (he is over 70 and never knew
it was there...took as a personal affront I think) he
went to the Historical Society to check on old photos
of the place. And he did find one, very old photo that
had part of it in the picture. At that time it was beginning
to show signs of wear. He can't get over it.

We are currently looking for pictures of the woman and
her husband who built and lived in the house first. (Actually
her father built it for them) I hope to be able to find
         out who she really is.

Sorry this is so long, but this is an on-going thing.
She has become part of the family, so to speak.

haunted Houses...well, I sometimes think that my house is
haunted, but I must say that I haven't had quite a
"convincing" encounter as the ones mentioned beforehand.
Please permit me to tell my tale...

We've lived in our house now for about 11 years. Over
the course of these 11 years, we've had very odd things
    	happen.

To name just a few...my brother found a tombstone in our
attic. Can't remember right off the top of my head who
the name was on it, but it was still a pretty freaky thing.

And there have been a few times when my mom will be at the
kitchen sink (no one else home) and she will see a white
blip go by. Now, naturally it could be the sun filtering
through a window somewhere, but...when the blip is preceded
by a definite sound of footprints walking up the stairs
    	it gets your imagination flowing!!

To give a few more examples, my whole family will be watching
TV in the living room and we can hear someone walking in our
attic. Our attic is not a "junk filled I-can-hardly-walk-amidst-
all-these-baby-clothes" attic either. It is very open and
big (my brother shoots hockey pucks against a fence up there)
so it could not easily be something that is creaking or moving
    	among all the clutter.

IF my house is indeed haunted, the spirit or ghost or whatever
is definitely not harmful. Every so often she makes an
appearance in some sort of way, but for the most part she just
wanders through the house. I have no idea who she/he is,
why they're in the house or anything!

We have named "it" Elizabeth since upon our first arrival into
the house we had gotten calls for an Elizabeth. Since our phone
number didn't change when we moved (we never got the calls before
moving to the house), we couldn't figure out WHO Elizabeth was
    	supposed to be.

Anyone have any ideas or input??

    	/Kim

RE: .30 (Kim)

Its not as odd as you may think for there to be a tombstone in an
attic. In times past (and frequently even today) if someone were
ill and felt that they were likely to die, they would frequently
make specific funeral arrangements -- up to and including ordering
a tombstone and coffin. This way they could feel confident that
things would be according to their wishes and that they had saved
their family the difficult responsibility of arranging for such
things in their time of grief. After all, even if they were to
recover, the arrangements would be needed eventually.

However, if they *did* recover, the coffin and/or tombstone would
have to be put in storage -- in the cellar, the barn, the woodshed,
... or the attic. The coffin would be unlikely to be missed later,
but the tombstone could easily end up covered with miscellaneous
junk and forgotten -- particularly under the circumstances of it
    being needed.

So while definitely "spooky" from our modern death-isolating viewpoint,
a tombstone in an attic is really not *that* wierd or "freaky".

As to footsteps in the attic. Old houses (and even many not so
old houses) make many odd noises. They don't need a lot of stuf
in them to do so -- the wood just shifts, bends, creaks, pops,
    clicks, sproings, groans, clicks, etc.

Phone -- perhaps an Elizabeth got a new phone number -- easily
misdialed as yours -- about the same time as you moved. I moved
recently, and although our number didn't change, our lines were
crossed for a while with a completely different number, so that
we both got both of our phonecalls.

Of course, you *could* have a resident spirit, and that spirit could
be the explanation for the various anomalies you describe. I'm
just pointing out (as you probably already realize) that you don't
*need* a spirit to explain them. They are interesting, however,
and it does "feel" like there is some kind of a pattern to them.

Thanks for the insight. Those were just the few "experiences"
that I could think of off the top of my head.

I guess one of the clincher's would be the day my brother
was in the living room and saw me walk into my mother's
    	bedroom.

There was a phone call for me, so he walked into my mother's
bedroom to get me and I wasn't in there. He looked into
my bedroom and I was sitting there sure enough. I hadn't
moved out of my room at all.

He did say that whoever it was that walked into my mom's
room was wearing a white nightgown with long brown hair.

...the calls. We've asked what number they are trying to
reach and they would say our phone number, so I don't think
it was a crossed line, but it very well could have been.

...the tombstone. Well, to me, it doesn't matter how it
got there, it's still freaky to me!! (shiver shiver)

    	Thanks again!!

There's a haunted house on the street I live on.

My roommate and I always thought it was strange that people would move
in, and then move out within a few months. They would always move
    out very quickly, too.

I found out earlier this year that the house was built on the sight
of a farm house, and that the people who lived there would hear
the footsteps of the man who owned the land, and lived in the original
house. I also heard that other "strange" things would happen in
    the house, also.

The "For Rent" sign is down again.... I wonder how long the new
people will stay there? (I'm just glad it's not the house I live
    in!)

I had a haunted house experience back in 1985. I met a couple that
lived out in Spencer Mass that owned an old victorian type house
that they bought dirt cheap. Well the story goes that in 1912 a
very prominant family, the Proutys lived in the house. A young
woman named Maria Prouty had an affair with a man who murdered her.
The newspaper (I have seen the archives of the murder that my freind
retrieved at the Worcester Antiquarian Society) ruled it suicide.

Well the family moved into the house, and a lot of strange going
ons were happening. Before I met the family, a year later I read
about thier house in Jack Dempsy's column in the Worcester Telegram,
so I had an idea what was happening. They had a psychic (a famous
one from Westboro MA) called "Ruben" come in and do a seance. The
house was haunted by by this spirit Maria, who is actually trying
to get her story out that it was murder that killed her and not
suicide. She is not an evil spirit the family says, and the couple
has communicated with her, through Ruben the psychic. A book is
in the process of being written that will tell the story. Maria
the spirit gave a messege to the couple, which is when the truth
is out about her death..she will dissappear.

My expierience? Well we were invited to the house..yeah, it is
a typical victorian house that has the "haunted appearence". A beauty
it was though with lovely marble fireplaces. Well first my freind
showed me a photo that was taken of her daughter...well accross
the photo was this yellowey filmy looking thing with two very distinct
rays going through it that crossed in the center. It did not look
like trick photography or a double exposure, it was the spirit.
Yeah...I turned a little white when I seen it....she told me it
is called an "aura" and the rays are called the "solar plexis".
A parapsycologist looked at the photo, and said it was a very good
example. Well that night they let us listen to the seance tapes
that Ruben did, and it was the strangest, scariest thing I have
ever heard, with all kinds of unusual noises in the background.
My friends said it was pitch quiet when they done it.
Well when we left the house..scared out of our wits, my husband
went to start the car (which always starts on the first try), well
we had a tough time starting it! When I went home, I went down
to my bedroom, opened the door, turned the lights on, shut the
door...and would you believe...all the lights in the house went
off for about two minutes (just in my house, not on the rest of
the street)......to conclude...we have recieved many other invatations
to visit these people...but we always make up excuses not to go!!

"Set hidden" means that either the author or the moderators have
made the particular note or response unreadable. This is often
done because either the author has personal reasons for wanting
to conceal the material, usually temporarily (otherwise the author
would delete it), or the moderators have done so, either at the request
of a conference member or because the note content may have something
that is questionable under corporate policy. "Set hidden" implies
that some day it may be "unhidden."

It's been such a long time since the last note!! Does anyone read this
note anymore or am I the only one still interested in haunted houses??

As much as I (since a small child) have always tried to convince myself
that "there are no such things as ghosts" I have always believed in
    them anyhow.

When i was very young my favorite aunt died suddenly of a heart attack.
The week after her death i woke up in the middle of the night to see a
woman, who kind of looked like my mother, sitting on the end of my bed
with a long flowing flowered dress. I tried to ask her what she was
doing there but she just sat and smiled at me. I was so afraid that i
hid my head under the covers. A few seconds later i got the courage up
to take another look, but she was gone.

I asked my mother in the morning if she had come to my room that night,
and she thought i was crazy.

Awhile later we came across very old photos of my mother, grandmother
and great-aunt(the one who died). When my aunt was young she did
indeed look somewhat like my mom.

To this day I swear that was my aunt at the end of my bed.

Three years ago my husband and I bought an old house, and since the day
we moved in i was convinced we weren't alone. The house is about 100
years old. A major part of the house was torn down years ago during
reconstruction and remodeling. the attic stairs used to be in the back
of one of the closets, now we have a ladder that drops out of the
ceiling in the hall. I have heard many lumps and bumps coming from the
second floor at night and always run up to check to see if one of the
kids have fallen out of bed. But everytime they are soundly sleeping.
I also very often hear the crys of a baby or young child. There again
I am finding myself checking on the children who are sound asleep.
Three days after we moved into the house my daughters "blankey" came up
missing, (i put her to bed that night WITH the blanket), I tore the
house apart looking for that stupid blanket and to this day it has
never turned up, along with alot of our other belongings.

We know quite a few people who have lived in our house previously. I
asked one woman what she thought about the house and she politely told
me she didn't want to talk about it. I met a girl that lives out of
state now but used to live in the house about 10 years ago. She
brought up the subject to me the minute after we were introduced.
Neither of us have ever seen any thing but both have the same feeling
of some other presence. She also gave me a list of things that she had
that were "lost" in the house and never found. I find myself talking
to the air and pleading with these/this spririt to return belongings,
so far nothing has been returned.

Maybe I have talked myself into believing this, I don't know. Some of
our friends refuse to spend the night at our house just because of the
stories I've told them. I would love to actually see something
sometime(for a sanity check). I need to do some digging on history of
the house and find out why half of the house is missing. Hopefully
    i'll find some answers soon.

know??!! Believe me, I have torn my house apart numerous times in the
last three years and have never found anything that came up missing.

As for seeing things...I haven't really seen anything in this house. I
catch movements out of the corner of my eye ALOT! For the most part I
only hear things, (thumpings and bumpings).

Hi all. I don't know if this qualifies, but it seems a pair of my
daughter's sneakers were "haunted". When Amy was 4.5 years old, we were
visiting her uncle in the White Mountain area of New Hampshire. On our
last night there I took her sneakers off her to hanf them out to dry.
She had worn them swimming that day. In the morning as we were packing
to go home, we couldn't find them. Looking all over my brother-in-law's
yard, they were nowhere to be found. I figured that some animal had
absconded with them during the night and taken them into the woods.
It wasn't unusual to see deer and even bear in his yard some evenings.
An occasional moose also, never mind the small animals. Hmmm. Getting
    wordy here.

When we got back home (about 90 miles away) and open the front door,
there were the sneakers sitting by themselves on the living room couch,
covered with dry mud from the river. True story.

Alright, I've been trying to convince myself that there
are `non-ghostly' explanations for these things, but they
sound so much like the past few entries, I'll add my story
    	here, too...

My husband and I moved into a cottage in january. The site
of the house is over a hundred years old, having actually
been a `milking room' at one time, according to my grandfather,
who has always lived down the street from this house (he's 90).

At first my husband told me he heard someone rattling the
kitchen doorknob, which must be done form inside the porch.
After watching the cat stare at the door for a few seconds
(he thought it was me coming home) he went to the door, the
rattling stopped just as he got there, and there was noone
on the porch or the well-lit yard (it was night). I have heard
the door rattle at night with my husband there, maybe twice. The
cats always stare transfixed, but no one is there. hmmmm...I
spoke to the previous tenant and they never had anything happen.

Then, I was doing laundry in the cellar one day last week, and
when I came back several hours later to put it in the dryer,
the lid of the washer was open. No one was there all day. How
did the lid get open? I felt as though I was being watched as I
put the wash in the dryer, but that could have been nervousness...

Lastly, my husband insisted one day that when he went to bed there
was only one pack of cigarets on the table, when he got up, there
were two. He had `misplaced' a pack earlier in the week. I thought
he just forgot that he had two, but is sure he didn't. Things seem
to go missing sometimes, but I've always attributed it to one of us
moving or misplacing it, they always re-appear....

So, I try not to beleive that the place is haunted, but I do
    	believe in ghosts, etc....Any suggestions/comments???

    	Sherry

From what you've said, there doesn't appear to be any malevolence
present. In some places the walls_between_the_worlds there are thin
and penetrable. There is a definite attempt to establish contact with
both you and your husband in a meaningful (to you) manner (assistance
to him in returning what had been lost/taken, assistance to you with the
washing chore/knowledge of your intent to wash). The rattle at the
door lets you know that you have company.

I have a question. Can a new house that no one has ever lived in be
haunted? Let's pretend that the land that it's built on has no
significant history - it was just a cow pature or something. Is there
a tie between a "ghost" and a dwelling, or is it the person/people that
live there that is significant? Or does it depend on the situation?
Just something I've been wondering about.

    Ever see "Poltergeist"?

Consider the land the dwelling was constructed upon and it
    enters the realm of possibility.

Most of what I've read, though, indicates that changes in the
environment, sometimes even minor ones, can inhibit the appearance
    of 'shades'.

In the movie mentioned, "Poltergeist", one of the parapsychologists
indicated that in a haunting the entities attached themselves to the
dwelling and could "hang around" for a number of years. Poltergeist,
it was said, attach themselves to an individual and usually appear

On the question of whether a ghost haunts a building or a person,
I remember a couple of stories told to me by a Church of England
vicar about exorcisms which he had been involved with.

These exorcisms were done as a result of requests by parishoners
of his, who had been experiencing feelings of a "presence". In order
to do the job successfully, this vicar had to visit the people in
their home, and try to understand the nature of these possessions
    (ie. hauntings).

The details of the cases were not described to me, but I definitely
remember that in one case, it turned out that the house was the
"possessed" object, while in the other case, it was one of the
occupants of the house who was the centre of the "presence". I do
not know what the past history of either the buildings or the people
    were.

RE: .55 (Terry)

    That is essentially correct --

A poltergeist (litterally noisy ghost) is associated with an individual
-- usually but not always an adolescent, usually but not always under
some form of obvious stress (e.g., parent's divorcing). Poltergeist
outbreaks usually last from a few days to a couple of months. They
are frequently faked or include fakery. There is a fair amount of
evidence (but less than a conclusive case) that the focus of the
poltergeist phenomena frequently or always is repressing and denying
anger. Plausibly, poltergeists are not independent personalities but
an outward display of the unconscious, suppressed anger via the human
psi ability of psychokinesis (PK), and by more mundane, covert tricks.
It is not clear that even when trickery is involved, that the agent
is fully conscious of what they are doing or clearly remember their
own actions. There was a fad a few years back in parapsychology of
refering to poltergeist phenomena as RSPK (Repeated Spontaneous
Psycho-Kinesis); but this has largely fallen out of favor (it assumes
what has not been proven, after all, that the focus is in some sense
an unconscious, active agent, rather than, for example, a lure for
    troublesome spirits).

A haunting, on the other hand, is associated with a specific location.
They are frequently (but not always) of somewhat longer term duration
(sometimes years and even decades or centuries) than poltergeist
phenomena. It is rather hard to generalize about hauntings and it is
reasonable to suppose that they may represent a variety of different
phenomena (excluding those produced by perhaps subtle "normal" events).
Some seem to show at least some signs of active intellegence, while
others seem to be some sort of non-intelligent "trace".

There is no clearcut phenomena which occurs only in a poltergeist case
or only in a haunting, but there are sort of statistical tendencies.
Poltergeist phenomena tends to produce overt physical phenomena --
objects flying through the air, or falling, things breaking, disruption
of electrical appliances, loud noises which could plausibly be produced
by physical means (e.g., things slaming together). Hauntings, on the
other hand, tend to be more subtle and subjective: feelings of chill,
apparitions, relatively faint specific sounds (e.g., a bell ringing,
or footsteps), malaise, etc. Some things seem to be common for both
kinds of phenomena (just judging subjectively, with no statistics to
back me up -- it seems to me that the sound of doorknobs rattling seem
to be common to both, as do objects which disappear and later
    reappear).

I have heard of similar "bad vibes" being experienced in the vicinity
of former Nazi concentration camps in Europe. I remember someone on TV
once saying that the location of one of these camps is even shunned by
wildlife from the surrounding forest. I don't remember which camp this

I get them in Salem, Massachusetts. Maybe it's because of the witch
history and the evil that was done to innocent women by a paniced

Yes the hangings did take place in Danvers, MA. The hanging tree is on

I used to work for a talk show host in Boston, and one night as we
were talking of ghostly things a man called and said his house was
haunted. It was a fairly new house in Sudbury. We decided to go and
investigate his claims of his child being put out of her own bed and
being forced to sleep under the bed, of the child saying her "friend"
had a very sore finger, both he and his wife being pushed down the cellar
stairs by and unseen entity, and numerous other complaints that I can not
recall at this time. The first time we went, the husband seemed indeed
a strange person without all this phenomena happening around him. He showed
us an indent in his back that he claimed looked like a bullet hole, not
having ever seen one, I can't say that it was, but there was a large
indented scar there. Then he told us that he could turn himself into a
panther and indeed he did, in his mannerisms and growling and pacing the
parlour floor. His wife said the only way she could stop this manifistation
was to put a bag over his head, which we quickly asked her to do. It was
    terrifying!!!
We decided we had had enough for that night and when I went back to the
radio station I asked my boss if I could contact the Warren's from Ct.
who were my initial GHOSTBUSTERS. We contacted them and they came out
in two weeks. Mrs.Warren is a psychic and she took me aside in the
baby's room and said that she had picked up that the owner of the house
had sold his soul to the devil when he was a child and was now
suffering the consequences of this deed. Also the land that the house
was built on once had another house on it that had burned to the ground
and a child had died in that fire and was buried in the back yard. She may
be the one that was putting the current child of the house out of *her*
bed. Mrs. Warren(who was involved in the Amityville Horror) then said that
the child suffered with a finger that had been wrenched and torn when
it got caught in a tree.

We sat down and talked with the current owner and he confessed to
having sold his soul to the devil when he was 7 or 8 years old because
he found it in a book that his mother owned (she turned out to belong
to a coven, along with other members of the family) The passage in the
book promised that if you followed the instructions and sold your soul,
you could have anything you wanted. He asked for a lot of money, his
own house and a new car by the age of twenty-one and he had all of
    that.

We subsequently received a call from a phychic investigative group from
England who were interested in going out to the house and using very
sensitive tapes to pick up any sounds that might not be heard by us
normal humans. To make this a little shorter, they taped on new tapes
and we left the house. When we returned and listened to the empty
tapes for a while, we heard in a low and gutteral voice, "The body is in
the yard", in a very slow and deliberate manner. Needless to say we
were so terrified that we never returned and I do not know what
    happened to that family.

I have heard many times over the years of new houses being haunted and
found to have been built on top of the ground where and old house had
    once stood.

RE: .63

With all due respect to what you witnessed and how you felt about it:

This guy does not seem like a particularly reliable character, and I
would judge the probability of him faking the whole thing rather high
to start with. Once the infamous Warrens entered the scence all
credibility for the incidents goes out the window. The "psychic
investigative group" from England (do you have any other info on them?
how long ago was this) may have either been connected to Ed Warren
or he, or the owner may have faked the tapes (this would be extremely
easy to do unless the investigators really knew their stuff -- in
which case it would only by moderately difficult).

For some of the source of my low opinion of Ed Warren and his crew,

    Steve,

Due to my interest in haunted houses, I taped just that segment on
"Unsolved Mysteries" Also think it was very interesting, but still
does not prove conclusively that the house is haunted. I would try
to locate records of previous owners, (since house was built) and
go from there. Although I never really discount a story, no matter
how ridiculous, without proof. My proof would be to stay in the
house and see for myself. Some people may be more sensitive than
others and what is heard and seen by some members may not be by
    the rest.
There are many things in this world that seem strange, that are
just waiting for the right time and right person to solve them,
and many things that will maybe never be solved.

Did anyone happen to catch the Unsolved Mysteries last night?
It contained two stories of people who owned haunted locations.
The first was about a hotel that was around in the days of the old
west and in which the hall chandelier kept being turned on, and
in room 18 there appeared a ball of light. Two psychic investigators
toured to place and one felt the coldness of room 18 and the other
was able to perceive a card game for high stakes and the feeling of
someone being shot. It also had an image of a boy sitting on the
bar spinning a glass and when the person who was cleaning up talked
to him he turned ghostly blue and jumped from bar and vanished.
The kitchen help also noted strange phenomena too, such as a glass
pitcher floating by itself, moving from a shelf.
The second story had to do with a woman who had a recurring dream
of a house which she had never seen, and later when she moved to
Florida she found the exact house that was in her dreams.
The original owner of the house had been murdered in the back yard
after someone had set his truck on fire, the murder has remained
unsolved. But his ghost is said to haunt the place, hoping that someday
his murder will be solved. Phenomena in the case was, footsteps in the
hall, doors opening on their own, a ghostly apparition passing someone
on the stair, music boxes starting on their own etc.
While filming the segment at the house the crew of Unsolved Mysteries
had lighting go off for no reason and one of the crews camera, which
was in perfect working order failed to function.
I taped it so I would have it for future reference and to play on

The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article about real estate deals
falling through on the grounds of the premises being posessed. There
are laws in several state that require acts of violence resulting
in death that have occurred in a dwelling to be disclosed along with
any other disclosable information ie. lead paint, UFFI etc. This has
been expanded to include claims of posession. Several law suits have
been won where the plaintiffs have claimed the house was haunted, and
not disclosed and something or someone was bothering them in the house.
Brokers and past owners were found at fault resulting in a refund. The
    article ran on Halloween.

I am a new reader to this file and thought that I might put an
experience of mine in this note...

When I was a child (9 yrs. old) we lived in quite a large house
here in Colorado Springs. The house was not too old at the time, Built
in the late 50's, time of event was in 1974. Anyway one night while my
father was out of town on business in N.Y.C. we were all preparing for
bed. I have three sisters and a brother and the oldest, my sister, was
letting the dog outside through the garage. The door to the garage was
located downstairs in our den. there were a group of stairs (about 5
steps) leading up into the garage itself. At the top of the stairs to
the right there is a door leading out into the back-yard with a window
in it. Anyway we all heard a scream and we got up and ran downstairs.
My sister said she had seen a mans profile siloueted in the light at
the top of the stairs. Well we called the police and they sent a car to
our house. They searched the garage and found nothing. The strange part
is that the back door is locked with a key dead-bolt. The garage doors
themselves were very noisy when opened and we heard nary a whisper.

We had a intercom set up in our house in which all of the rooms
including the garage had speaker/microphones. You could listen in on
any room you wish. Great for brothers and sisters! Well the police said
that they would be in the vacinity if any thing happened. We listened
in on the intercom and heard he/her/it breathing right next to the
speaker/microphone. It then proceeded to move about the garage and move
and open boxes. We were able to get the police right back and they came
upstairs first to listen and they heard the noises also. The two
officers then pulled out their pistols and entered the garage were to
their surprise there were boxes opened and strewn about and the car
doors were opened. The police searched throught the boxes, car and attic
and found nothing. A few other strange things happened in the next two
years before we moved but nothing of that magnitude.

23.72"A Haunted Castle"GOLF::BAIRDThu Feb 20 1992 11:1431
Did anyone happen to catch the "Unsolved Mysteries" 100th episode?
It contained stories about UFO sightings, and some on Haunted Houses.
One in particular interested me, about a Castle which was built in I
think New Jersey (details unclear as was watching it at a friends
house). But the castle builder died before it was finished and his
spirit is still seen and felt within the castle today. The present
owners have since moved to another location, however they never felt
that the ghost was a threat but a help. They think he is taking care
of the place still. One instance is that the woman left the upstairs
windows open even though the weather reported rain and her husband
suggested they close them, now these windows were the type that could
only be opened from the inside of the house. The owners went out and
before returning it start a downpour of rain, upon there return they
went to the upper stories to close the windows and found them all
closed and latched. Visitors have seen the spirit on an upper
staircase in the house and the wife of the original owner saw him
along with a friend, on the same staircase, until he faded away.
Another visitor, before entering the house saw a well dressed man
at the front door and upon approaching him and inquiring who he was
    he mysteriously faded away.
The present owners have had many strange happenings, such as a
loaf of bread flying from a counter to the floor some distance away
and other subtle hints of his presence, nothing malicious but just
to let them know that he is still around and taking care of things.

This sounds like some place that I would like to own and if I could
find one with a friendly spirit to take care of the place and not be
    mischievous or a hindrance.

Art - what is a Vogon Ball?

    Marilyn, and other interested parties:

OCSPR consists of approx 18 members who meet monthly to discuss
business and set up investigations. On the investigation we quietly
walk thru the area and write down any impressions, images, feelings,
etc. that we experience. After every one has done so we compare
our findings with the "owner's" experiences. Then we usually do
a taping - we ask questions and record the answers on a NEW cassette
tape. We have had alot of success with non-physical voices showing
up on the tape. Sometimes they even answer the question! Mostly
we get yesses, noes, and or knockings, and other one word answers.
We would like to use more equipment, but the organization is non-profit
and we do not charge anyone for the investigations - therefore no
money for equipment! In the past we've used video cameras. The
group also has several photographs with "unexplained" images in
them. In one instance 2 people are at a Ouija Board and an extra
arm with hand and ring attached is touching the pointer. We try
to determine whether the occupants of a "haunted building" are
experiencing spirits, thoughtforms, or their imagination.

Oh yeah, Marilyn, we are like a totally awesome like group.

23.82can a poltergeist be an apparition?BRYAN::TREBILCOTTGM/EDS Account GroupWed Jun 03 1992 19:3458
In a previous note, it was mentioned that sudden changes (something
like that) could influence a haunting.

I had an experience in a house I used to live in, but I had been living
there for two years before anything happened. Is it possible that
    something triggered things to happen?

Also, I was interested in the difference between hauntings and
poltergeists...could someone tell me, can apparitions be caused by the
    poltergeist phenomena?

Also, can these apparitions be seen by others, including non-family
    members?

One night a woman appeared in my bedroom, at 3:00 am. That was the
first time, and I remember her perfectly. At 2:50 am, my mother
had been awoken by a noise and when she went into the hall to
investigate, she said she heard a dress ruffling go up the stairs and
    into my room.

At 3:00 something woke me (a noise, I guess) and I looked up to see the
woman standing next to my bed. I remember I turned and looked at my
clock then to see what time it was, and then turned back to her, and
she remained. She had long brown hair, was wearing a purple cloak with
a fur mantle, and thigh high boots. She was smiling at me, and I
remember her being incredibly beautiful (I thought so at the time). I
was startled, and even scared, until I looked up and saw that she was
standing under my crucifix, and being superstitious in an old-fashioned
sort of way, assumed she wasn't evil, else she couldn't have been
    there.

Anyway, I moved my bed to the other side of the room (didn't like the
idea of her standing over my bed while I was sleeping) the next day,
and things seemed to return to normal, for a week. Well, one night
after I had had an argument with my mother, I was laying in bed, and
looking up at the ceiling, thinking about apologizing, and I felt the
end of my bed sink, as if someone had just sat down. Heart hammering,
I looked, and there she was. Now, I hadn't even been to sleep yet, and
this time I found my voice and asked her what she wanted, repeating the
question twice. She just smiled at me and faded. Well, as soon as she
disappeared my mother came in and we reconciled.

Since that day, several people saw her, people who had never even heard
the story before asked me if I had a ghost. My brother saw her one
night (he lived in California, and me in Michigan, and I had not shared
the experience with him) and he refused to enter my room after that, in
spite of the fact I assured him she was harmless.

Now, I ask, since I was a teen, could she have been associated with a
poltergeist effect? The fact that she appeared to several people (at
least eight I can think of off the top)... does that mean she is a
    haunting, or a poltergeist apparition?

    Wondering about that particular incidence...

RE: .82 (Elizabeth)

I think anyone who says "always" or "never" about these things is, as
us parapsychologists say "going beyond the available data". But it is
very unusual to have clear-cut apparitions associated with poltergeist
    cases -- off-hand (and this is only off-hand) I can't think of a single
such case. There is nothing in what you describe to lead me to
classify this as a poltergeist. That it happened to a teenager is not
enough by any means -- a teenager is just as likely to witness a non-
poltergeist apparition as anyone else (maybe more so -- I don't know of
any statistical studies), so that cannot be used to classify it as
    poltergeist phenomena.

No, this is a pretty typical apparition case. Since the apparition was
not known to you, appeared to be associated with a place (rather than
seemingly directed towards a specific person), and was observed over an
extended period of time, I would tentatively classify this apparition
as a haunting rather than as a crisis apparition. But that is simply a
classification of the observed phenomenon -- it does not tell us what
the phenomenon is. Very likely, what we classify as a "haunting" is a
    number of different phenomena.

There were no physical associations with this woman, and when we moved,
    she did not follow.

There were "other" things that happened, people used to hear someone
walking about upstairs when we no one was up there, we had a step that
was not loose or anything, yet people used to mysteriously loose their
balance (including a cat!) and fall after touching it (third from the

her, which had a mirror stand that went on top. Almost immediately, a
permanent mist appeared in the center of the mirror, which is still
present today, although the mirror is in my mother's bedroom in her
present home. No amount of cleaning can seem to remove it, and it
resembles what happens when one blows warm, moist breath on a cold
window, or on a mirror, but you can't wipe it away. Any ideas?

Also, there was a day, when I was a senior, sitting alone in the house,
and heard a buzzing sound behind me. As I turned around to see what it
was, a ball of, what I can only describe as electricity whizzed past my
ear, touched me, sent a shock of electricity through me (quite
unpleasant) and then continued on, out of the house.

When I recently discussed this with a co-worker, he suggested it was a
    lightning ball?

Any ideas? These were all separate incidents, all of them taking
place in the house where I spent my adolescence. There were plenty
more things, and I distinctly remember my mother getting upset at my
dabbling with the "occultish" side of things in an attempt to interpret
    what was going on.

Sounds like something, normal or paranormal, etched the glass surface a
little. Either that or its something approaching the strength of the

Does sound like ball-lightning. If I had to guess, I'd guess that it

On the mirror, check to see whether the "mist" is on the front surface
of the glass (sometimes the mirror backing gets what for want of a better
way to express it, I'll call "micro bubbles," which can defocus the image
like a mist. It's rare, but one mirror in our guest room has a slight case of
it, and I know it's a physical problem, not a metaphysical one). If it's on
the back, the mirror probably needs to be resilvered. If it's on the front,
check to see whether it will _scrape_ off: sometimes a foreign substance may
be affixed to a glass surface (e.g., a clutch of insect eggs). There may
be a material explanation for it. I'm not ruling out other explanations,
BTW.

On the "walking sounds," this is not inconsistent with reports of some
hauntings.

Quite possible. Though rare, ball lightning, which is a temporary stable
plasmoid, is pretty well established. I haven't been fortunate enough
to see ball lightning, but I have seen a couple of examples of its close cousin,
chain lightning.

sounds like a house I'd have liked to live in for a few years. The potential

Being as interested in the paranormal, etc, as I am, and always have
been, it was quite exciting to live there, and I always invited

Extra-Sensory abilities of different sorts have been in my family, and
I think that some of the other incidents may fall under other topics,
such as future prediction, ability to see auras...

but there is one story I find still frightens me...and I shared with
    very few people.

I was taking a bath by candelight and listening to some "mood music"...
I looked up and stared intensely at the flame for a long time, and as I
watched, the glass candle holder began to melt. Now this was a tiny
candle, with hardly any heat, and yet the glass was melting, into the
shape of a screaming person. I jumped out of the tub, blew out the
light, flicked on the light switch and ran to tell my mother. I also
showed her the glass and the screaming man.

I describe it that way because it looked like a mouth open in a scream,
    and eyes squinted shut.

This is the day she yelled at me for dabbling in the occult. Being
scared as I was, I began to think maybe she was right, and I was
playing with things I didn't understand?

Anyway, I showed the glass to a friend/skeptic of mine, and even he had
to admint, that that is what it looked like.

Things like that made it an adventure to live there, even if the
    memories are sometimes frightening.

This is two stories one of a haunted dorm, the other of a
    haunted house.

I have a few friends that went to Becker Jr. College about
10 years ago. They said that their dorm was haunted. It
started right before Thanksgiving each year and would be
over after the holidays (can ghost's be seasonal? or a
certain anniversary date bring them around?). It would
last for about 5 or 6 weeks.

It would start slowly with things missing and reappearing
after folks had searched everywhere for the object only
reappearing after they had given up. Then posters on the
walls would all come off the walls each night. One person
had a mirror come off the wall and set down on the floor
without breaking. My girlfriend said that she was once
woken in the middle of the night being picked up and turned
over on to her stomach. It was like whatever it was, was
gaining strength from the girls fear.

One person's boyfriend was visiting one night and saw what
looked like a very large black man dressed in tattered
clothes with chains attached to his ankles appear and then
vanish. This boyfriend ran out of the dorm and would not
step foot in that building again.

There were tunnels underneath the dorms and it's believed that
this site was once part of the underground railroad.

My friend told me alot more. Has anyone ever heard about this?
She is tempted to go back to visit the dorm and find out if
    it is still happening.

Also her great grandparents had a house in Maynard that is
now occupied by her cousins. Sometimes you can see her great
grandmother's ghost at the top of the stairs with two shadow
figures behind her. The two shadow figures are believed to
be her husband and son. She doesn't hurt anyone, but you
can hear her footsteps every once in awhile.

    It can. Two ways.

In some belief systems, certain times of year are easier for ghosts to
manifest themselves (the veil between the worlds is supposed to be
thinner in those times ); Hallowe'en is supposed to be the best time in
asome traditions, and that's why _the_ figure of Hallowe'en (outside of
    the Jack-O'-Lantern ) is a ghost.

Also, some hauntings are supposed to relate to events, usually
traumatic ones. These can have a time component, and some ghosts can
appear on anniversaries of various happenings.

Hi,
A friend of mine related a story about a manifestation he witnessed in
one of our Polytechnic Halls Of Residence. The event happened straight after a
violent argument, the room became chilled and the head of Anubis manifested
at a window. The person said he was sure this was not a shadow, because it was
3D, i.e. as he moved, it's dark outline changed as you would expect a solid
object, rather than a 2D shadow to - however he didn't stay around long enough
to examine it! As supportive evidence, he says that a girl who was asleep in
the room near (under?) the window awoke, instantly screamed at the sight of the
head and promptly departed, looking somewhat drained! :-)

One thought I had about previous notes, is that in dorms and student
houses it will have been likely that some people would have been messing with
Ouija boards from time to time, I think this was the case with this particular
room above.

The first college I went to had a high suicide rate. For some reason
there were a lot more suicides in the first semester than in the second
and they would start right before Thanksgiving, when some kid who
couldn't face going home and telling his parents he was flunking out
would decide to kill himself instead. There was one dorm in
particular that most of the deaths occured in. It was one of the newer
buildings. There were two rooms that were no longer used for living in
because students complained about noises and disturbances, and one room
was reputed to have an awful smell that would start up for no reason.
These two rooms were said to have been the sites of two particularly
gory suicides. (By the way, it was a men's dorm - I never heard about
    any female students committing suicide.)

I remember reading in one of the better U.K. papers a big feature about
hauntings in buildings and at sites around Britain, a few years back.
One of the tales told was of a man driving his car through a wooded
country road one night. As he came to round a corner he was aware of a
car coming in the opposite direction; he could see it's headlights
approaching from around the bend. He slowed, and pulled his car into the side of
the road in order to avoid the oncoming vehicle, and as he did so on
elderly lady stepped into the road in front of him. Despite slowing he
was unable to avoid her and she was knocked away by the force of the
blow. The driver, on stopping, was aware that the other car had also
stopped just down the road around the bend, and the driver of that car
was running back towards the site where the accident had occured.

The driver of the first car was unable to find the sticken woman where
she had fallen, and as the driver of the second car arrived he asked
him whether he had seen him hit the woman and where she had fallen. The
second driver looked perturbed and claimed that he had just hit a woman
who had stepped out from _his_ side of the road. Both drivers confused
and unable to find the victim(s), they drove to a nearby village and
used the phone in one of the local pubs to contact the police, who told
them that they would check the area, but that every year they received
a few calls from people who had hit someone on that stretch of road. It
appeared that an old woman had been hit and killed by a car along that
road during the 1940's, and every year her ghost could be seen on the
    anniversary.

So. Some ghosts possibly do stick to social diaries. Actually, come to
think of it, most of the more famous ghosts in England seem to stick to
certain dates or times, especially ghosts that are found inside
    premises (castles, lodges, etc).

I wonder how they know? Do they ever miss an appointment?

I happen to have went to Becker Jr. College and do recall people
telling tales of a haunted dorm. The college is in Leicester Ma., and
most of the buildings are very old. There are also many underground
passeges here. We also used the Ouiji board quite often here but not
in that particular dorm. It always did look scary.

I have a story that to this day scares the death out of me, but
I'll share it. I lived in Worcester on lincoln st. around '76 '78.
The house we lived in I swear was either possesed or huanted but here
    is my story.
After living here for a while with my aunt living upstairs we had
strange things happening. For one my brother always seemed to sleep
walk or just jerk alot in his sleep He was about 11 years old, and my
aunts daughter upstairs from time to time would wake up and go in her
moms room and tell her her dolls were walking, then my aunt would see
that things in the room were actually moved around. (sorry so long but
it gets real scary). Anyhow thing started really getting wierd when my
aunt would tell my mom that she would hear her 4 year old talking in
the room to noone, or she would hear her palying jumping on the bed
and then check her to see she was sound asleep.

Now in my house all night long we would hear loud and I mean loud bangs
and noise all the time which was pretty scary. At first we thought it
was the radiator and the landlord had all the radiator replaced but it
still happened. Then the weirdest thing happened.

One night my brother woke up sleepwalking. He walked over to the
door and opened it up, while doing this he seemed to be patting the
floor. My mom was used to him sleepwalking but found this weird and
asked him what he was doing his reply was "I'm letting in my pigs".
Kinda scared my mother put him back to bed but said that he was doing
that convulsion type jerking and finally went to sleep. ( I know this
sounds crazy and corny but i swear it is true.) That same night my 4
year old cousin upstairs came out of her room where her mom was
watching tv sat on the floor pee's and say " I hate you mommy your
gonna die". well my aunt put her back to bed passing it off as strange
but she said it was scary.

Lastly and the most scary thing is the next morning my little
cousin tells my mother that the devil left her house last night and
came into your house and Ralph, my brother, let him in. After this my
mom had a priest come and bless the house. But we still heard wierd
noises. Not long after that we moved. Nothing has happened since.

Now I tell this story to a few people and when I drive by this
house I get an Erie feeling. But I notice three things the seem very
strange that I didn't realize before.

                1. The house is directly acroos the street from Kelly's
funeral home maybe 60 feet away. Big red house. 150
                   lincoln st was the adress

                2. The part of the house where me and my brothers room was
was torn down and sealed up. I don't know why.

                3. The house next to it is a nice house but on the wall
facing my old house there is a large cross painted
                   right on it. Go figure.

Sorry i took so long in writing this but I had to so you could see
where I was coming from. Man I work third shift and now I got the
    creeps....

I drove by the back, and yes, there is a cross painted on the
base of the chimney of the neighbors house. Looks like theres been
an addition added ove the last few years. There are also a couple of
windows that are now bricked over

"MIRROR, MIRROR", it is a spooky movies about a mirror that the demon
uses to cross over from its world to ours , I liked the movies, it is
scary and I like ghosts and things like that.

Does anybody know of any haunted house around eastern MA, (Like around
    Lowell or Nashua, NH)?

I've had a couple of DEJAVU gatherings at my place in Nashua...who
knows...it may be haunted by now. Or maybe in a century or two
we can all schedule a gathering *back* there, and really have some
    fun! (;^)

23.122a haunted houseBGSDEV::RAMSAYTue Mar 25 1997 13:5934
The house that we are moving into this week has ghosts! I found out from
the owner of the house, who lives on the first floor (which
is located in Nashua and was built around 1923), and from the previous tenant,
    who
who lived on the second floor for the past year. The 2nd floor is the one
we've rented.

According to the owner, who has occupied the house for 5 years, there are
probably 2 ghosts in the house, and they are "from the same family"
(related). The owner said that the ghost on the 2nd floor is a little old man
    around 100 years
around 100 years old who weighs around 60 lbs. The tenant who just moved out
likes the ghost so much that she wants to invite him to come live in her new
place. She misses him! She was there when I went to pick up the keys because
she wanted one more walk around the apartment. She said, "I'm really going
to miss this place."

The ghost appears in the bathroom every now and then (monthly maybe).

Both women told me that they feel the ghost has something to do with pregnan-
cies. Both women got pregnant (unexpectedly) a month after they moved
into the house. The tenant before the last one had been trying to get
pregnant for 4 years; she got pregnant a month after she moved in. The
owner said that even her dog got pregnant. And ... the dog sees the ghost.

What do you all think of this? Personally, I want the ghosts out of the
house even if they are "friendly." I value solitude and privacy. The
ghosts are obviously stuck in a dimension and need assistance to move on
to some other dimension.

P.S. My apologies if this note isn't properly aligned. I don't know
how to fix it. Maybe the mods can do it.

You can help it to the other side. The other thing is that if you know
it is there 'before' you move in then you could be letting yourself in
for problems. Especially if you're moving into what the ghost considers
it's territory. You'd be better off making some terms with the ghost.
Having respect for each other and living in peace.

You don't want to get started off on the wrong foot. Otherwise it may
be 'you' that will be looking for another place to live.
23.124exactly how?BGSDEV::RAMSAYTue Mar 25 1997 17:362
please be specific. what do I do to help it to the other side and/or
    make terms with it? Thanks!
23.125ASDG::CALLTue Mar 25 1997 19:1212
I'd wait till I encountered it. If you feel ok then try to speak to it.
Ask it why it is here. If you feel comfortable you can tell it to go to
    the light.

I wouldn't go in with the attitude that you want to get rid of it. That
    this is 'your' place now.

You'll never get anywhere with it. It sounds like a harmless entity. If
it doesn't bother you then let it be. It also sounds like a family. You
might bite off more than you can chew if you start messing with it in
    the wrong way.

23.126keep those ideas coming!BGSDEV::RAMSAYTue Mar 25 1997 19:361
