419.0. "Thanksgiving Holiday Wishes" by CAM::WAY (HWRFC Clydesdale) Mon Nov 19 1990 17:14

Well, the chill of late autumn is finally in the air, the football
seasons are more than halfway over, only a few rugby teams are left
battling it out in the Eastern Rugby Union, and most of the leaves
are gone off the trees. From where I sit in New England, where it
all began in this country so many years ago, it looks like
Thanksgiving time is truly upon us.

Thanksgiving. A day to give thanks for those things with which we
are truly blessed. An American holiday to be sure, but one which
all peoples have the right to take part in.

Over 350 years ago, a small band of people took their lives literally
into their own hands and made a long and dangerous journey so that they
could be free to worship their God in their own manner. After enduring
many hardships, a first winter here where many people died, and dealing
with a literally brand new world, the Pilgrims gathered with their
friends the Indians in a day long feast to give thanks.

And three days from now, we will sit down, hopefully with our loved
ones, to yet again give thanks.

You may wonder, in this troubled year, with 300,000 troops miles from
home in the Saudi desert, with the economy doing its best swan dive
impression, with so many homeless people, just what there is to give
thanks for.

Personally, I think there are many things to be thankful for.

First, give thanks for life itself. No matter how many burdens you
might bear, with life there is hope, and with hope all things are
possible.

Second, give thanks for the great people you have known in your
life. Perhaps it was a teacher, or a scout leader, or more appropriately
for this conference, a coach. Give thanks that this person imparted
some of their wisdom, their personality, or their dream to you, and that
it has enhanced and improved your life.

Give thanks for the human spirit. The human spirit is indomitable, and
has allowed us to overcome great adversity to achieve great things.
The human spirit allows things like the Berlin Wall to be overcome,
and it allows us to create works of art which enrich our lives.

Give thanks for your families. Blessed be the tie that binds, and
there is no stronger bond than that of kin. Take strength in that
bond, and use it in times of need.

And give thanks for the chances that you have had, and will
have, to make a difference in the world. It might not be something
earth shattering enough to win the Nobel Prize, but something as
simple as donating some old blankets to a shelter for the homeless
can and does make a difference.

And finally, give thanks for your friends. Friends are people you
choose, and friends are people who are there for you in your time
of need. Friends are to your life what water is to your body.

I'd like to wish you all a safe, happy, and comtemplative Thanksgiving.
May whatever God it is you worship smile upon you and yours....

Domo Arigato, yur `Sawness, and mucho reciprocity from the Johnston Band
or Renegades, Outlaws, and other Republicans.

When most folks are sitting down
(to Turkey, trimmings, and Turkey Day Football)

I'll be sliding down
(a mountain on a pair of skis).

Later that evening, we'll sit down to a non-traditional dinner of
Spaghetti and Meatballs, Garlic Bread, Salad, and a hearty wine. Then
brandy by the fire with big Suze, while the kids are sent elsewhere.

For those of you who'd like to give thanks, and help those less
fortunate than yourself, one of the charities in this area which I think
is very worthwhile (I'm not a big United Way fan) is the Denver Rescue
Mission. They're worth supporting on a year round basis. At this time of
year, a $100.00 donation will buy a really good meal for 25 people. They
also give away coats, shoes, and other winter `necessities'.

Stay Safe And Happy Dudes and Dudettes!

Thanks Dave.

A lot of people tell me I should be a writer. Maybe one of these days
I'll get the time to sit down and try really hard at it. Who knows,
maybe one day I could get something published....8^)

And Mike JN, I'll be thankful if you don't break a leg 8^)

A holiday just isn't a holiday without one of your meaningful essays,

Some of the things I'm thankful for this Thanksgiving:

    - The death of the cold war
    - The Penn State victory over ND
    - Men like Harvey Gantt who stand up uncompromisingly against racist,
      sexist, gay-bashing bible thumpers
    - SPORTS notes...thanks, Bob Hunt, for delivering me to the promised
      land
    - The freedom to write and think what I want, and your freedom to
      object
    - The Denver Rescue Mission...the Broncos can use all the help they
      can get ;-)
    - The Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers for providing me with a great
      1990 sports year
    - My parents, especially my father...we may not always agree and we
never say that 'love' word to one another, but somehow the mutual
respect overcomes that at all times...here's to ya dad! I told you
once you got your butt back down to Florida they'd get those shuttles
      flying again!
    - All the friends I've made from this conference
    - John Hendry for getting me to my first Fenway game
    - The Paper Doll Lounge...and the Paper Dolls
    - Elvis

    I'm thankful to:

Ginny, my wife of 17 months, who has taught me what love is all about.

My son Michael, who, at 25, still gives me a goodnight kiss and hug.

My daughter, Leslie, and her husband, Doug, who have given me my first
    grandchild, Andrew.

My daughter, Julie, who is out on her own and showing how mature she
    really is.

My daughter, Kerrie, who is in her first year of college and
academically doing so much better than she ever did before!

My daughter, Torie, who has reminded me how great it is to be the Dad of
    an eight-year-old.

My grandson, Andrew, who is such a joy to be with.

My Aunt Claire, who continues to fill-in for my late Mother.

My Uncle Ray, who is always there when I need a hand.

My sister Linda, and her husband Frank, who are such a part of our
    family.

My cousin, Laurie, and her husband Jimmy, who constantly allow us to
share in the love and fun of their baby, Ethan.

A number of my fellow workers, such as Terry Sweeney, who is always
available to help out on tough projects.

Neighbors who watch out for our children and our home.

And last, but certainly not least, my fellow noters. I don't want to
leave anyone out, but I DO want to particularly thank Hawk and Dickster
for all the chuckles they've given me over the past year.

May all of you have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Well, you folks want an essay for MLK Day? I'll give you one.

Actually, I don't think I started writing essays for this venue until
*after* MLK day this year, so I have a little grace period.

And I'd like to echo Lee's and others' sentiments about this notes file.
Probably looser than any other file on the net, there is still more
feeling of family in here than any place else.

Yeah, sure, we bicker, we dicker, we analyze and poke and prod each
other. Dan squares off against JD and T, and T squares off against ACC
Chris. Hawk and Dickster just poke fun at everyone and everything,
and I lost the junk note disease and got the rugby one instead.

I feel like you're all part of my family. Deep down, for all our
differing opinions, we're all the same, you know. We all want the
same security in life, we all want to be loved, we all want the
world to be safe for our children and loved ones...

Thanks again.

frank

PS Just you wait, that MLK essay will be one of the best yet....

A reminder folks - for those of you traveling, or who have family
or friends travelling to be with you - take it easy out there, arrive
safely. Slow down when driving - you'll get there safer. If traveling
by mass transit, have a safe trip, and be nice to the folks working
for the companies - this is a busy time for them.

    Enjoy.

                    EVERYDAY THANKSGIVING

Even though I clutch my blanket and growl when the alarm rings
each morning, Thank you Lord; that I can hear.
There are those who are deaf.

Even though I keep my eyes tightly closed against the morning
light as long as possible, Thank you Lord; that I can see.
There are many who are blind.

Even though I huddle in my bed and put off the physical effort
of rising, Thank you Lord; that I have the strength to rise.
There are many who are bedfast.

Even though the first hour of my day is hectic, when socks are
lost, toast is burned, tempers are short, Thank you Lord for my Family.
There are many who are lonely.

Even though our breakfast table never looks like the pictures in
magazines and the menu is at time unbalanced, Thank you Lord, for
    the food we have.
There are many who are hungry.

Even though the routine of my job is monotonous, Thank you Lord, for
    the opportunity to work.
There are many who have no job.

Even though I grumble and bemoan my fate from day to day and wish my
    circumstances were not so modest,
Thank you Lord, for the gift of Life.

Great topic 'Saw, also thought that poem was good. I'm thankful
    to God because:

 * Of my beautiful wife, and one year old son. (whom I am brain washing
early in life with assorted Raider paraphanalia(sp?))my son that
is. Can't seem to break my wife of her nasty Bengals habit.

 * We can worship him freely in this great country without hiding,
    or being persecuted.

 * This job, which provides most of our financial needs. And Notes,
which lets us share our beliefs, ideas, and opinions with others.
And although we don't always agree, that is what makes noting so
special. Imagine if everybody liked to eat spinach only....

 * And all of my many other needs which are constantly being met.

I hope that God will make his presence felt in all your hearts this
    thanksgiving......and throughout your lives.

    	My health.

My friends, who are doing all they can to get me through this.

The chance to read (and occasionally write in) SPORTS.

An American friend of mine came down to Geneva to see his dad's girlfriend
who is a Stew for one of the airlines, just over here on a stopover.

Turns out she smuggled a 15 pound turkey and a container of stuffing in
because she felt sorry for him way over here on Thanksgiving. (BTW, a turkey
is a very rare bird over here [:^{)] - hardly ever see them.)

Funny part was that she stayed in the Ramada, which is in the heart of the
Red Light District.

So my friend took her out for dinner, and dropped her off at the hotel after,
which is when she presented him with the turkey and stuffing.

He said "So here I am wandering around the Red Light District looking for my
car with this goddamn turkey in my arms and all the hookers are looking at me
laughing their haids off."

killed me, that one.

Have a rip-roaring day. rick ellis

Too much to be thankful for to list, and besides, you people covered it

To everyone in this file, even you read-only's, and especially everyone

I find myself doing things (manias, lunches, etc.) that I wouldn't do
