The reason that the money is tax free is because Bosworth insured the
contract himself with his first year's salary. Because the Seahawks
didn't spend a cent on the insurance, it's deemed tax free.

Can somebody schlep me here?

Is Bos not the dude that goes out/went out with that giant plastiscene-breasted
Danish girl?

Did I not read that he' coming to Europe or something?

Is he going to (1) going into acting
               (2) joining a Monastery or alternatively the CFL
               (3) coach one of the new European Teams?
               (4) none of the above

Am I confusing him with someone else? Gastineau, Butkus (haha)?

What is the capital of Burkina Fasso?

thanks in advance,

rick ellis

You're confusing him with Gastineau. His 'ex' was Brigitte Nielson.
He's now throwing cheap shots for the BC Lions of the CFL.

Rick, you'd better trademark that "plastiscene-breasted" bit. Too funny.

Dave Krieg is still holding out. Reportedly they are very far apart
on contract terms. They haven't signed the top few draft picks,
    either.

The Hawks will be beyond pathetic this year. Look for them to finish
4-12. If Krieg holds out for long, they'll have to go with loser
Kelly Stouffer. They have no running backs, a mediocre offensive
line, an ancient and inept defensive line, the worst defensive back-
field in football, and adequate linebackers.

Thou shalt not rag on Dinsmore's nickname.

In the Giants file, each noter has a manly nickname. Dinz despaired of
his name Dinz, feeling it wasn't manly enough for the competition
in that file.

So, after observing Dinz for a while (having known him for more than
three years) I felt that wildman was an apropros nickname.

Thus it was given, and it shall not be undone....

Claybone, of course JL is a hell of a runner. I was mostly thinking
about a halfback. Fenner won't make anyone forget Warner in his
prime. Stouffer is a major stiff. You'll see once he gets a chance
to show what he's incapable of.

Chainsaw, for someone capable of writing as lyrically as you are, I
cain't believe you use the word "apropos" as a substitute for
"appropriate". The two words aren't interchangable and don't mean
the same thing. Once I am successful in eliminating incorrect
apostrophes, I'll devote my time to eradicating "apropos" and
    "orientated".

It's quite possible I'm mis-using the word, but that's something
I don't usually do. My little dictionary here defines apropos
as "appropriately". Actually I think appropriate is an adjective
and apropos is an adverb, so I could be all messed up (or
somewhat disoriented ;^))

Another dictionary I just checked defines it as "concerning"
(I'm guilty for dropping the "of" part of the expression tho').

I *never* mess up the word oriented... (Another gotcha is the
word realtor, which a lot of people pronounce realator....)

Chainsaw, who's been suitably chastised....
296.28More Dull DiscourseDECWET::CROUCHGrand marshall of the dork paradeThu Jul 26 1990 19:4522
    'Saw,

Perhaps I was a bit hasty in chastising you for your usage. My
dictionary also says that "apropos" means "being both relevant and
opportune". While I would argue that "appropriate" would be the
better word, by this definition, "apropos" isn't entirely wrong.

I remember when a friend always used this word and I looked it up
and it said the definition was "with regard to". This was a few
years ago. This might be a case where constant misuse of a word
became so common that the definition changed. You can even find
the word "orientate" in the dictionary now. I'm thinking of
words like "hopefully", which used to mean "full of hope", but
through misuse came to mean "I hope".

Anyway, thanks for not taking offense. Your writing skill are
unimpeachable. Just don't write "loose" for "lose" or misspell
"definitely" as "definately" and you have nothing to fear.

296.29CAM::WAYShot down, in a blaze of gloryFri Jul 27 1990 11:1325
Pete,

I would never take offense at being corrected for grammatical errors,
or usage errors.

One thing that bothers me so much is that fact that in most countries
in Europe, most people can speak enough English to give you directions
or to get you someplace where someone speaks better English.

Here in the states we have people (including MANAGERS right here at
DEC) that cannot put a coherent sentence together without making
grammatical mistakes. Granted, English, for all its lack of logical
rules, is probably the hardest language to learn, but if it's your
birth tongue you should at least make an effort.

One pet peeve I have is misuse of the word "myself". I constantly
see people writing things like "If you have questions, ask John
or myself". Gawd, does that irritate me.

And even if it's in the dictionary, the word "orientate" still bothers
me 8^)

If you ever need a deputy on the Grammar Police, just swear me in, pardner...

    'Saw,

    That should be "partner" ;^).

Back to the HeeHawks. Dave Krieg agreed to a four year + 1 option year
contract yesterday. He will make around $1.5 million a year,
reportedly. I guess they want to make another George Blanda out of
him. They also signed Terry Wooden (sp?), their 3rd round pick.
Notable holdouts are now Cortez Kennedy and Blackmon, the #1 and #2
    picks, and Ruben Rodriguez, punter.

And, I stand my prediction that they'll be 4-12. The secondary will
be scorched so often, they'll need a fire extinguisher on the side-
    lines.

The official beginning of the NFL preseason is the weekend of August
11-12. Teams are allowed to play 4 preseason games.

There are 3 exceptions to this rule. First is the Hall of Fame game in
Canton, Ohio played between the Browns and Bears on Saturday, August 4.
Second is the game in Tokyo between the Bronocs and Seahawks, also on
Saturday, August 4. 3rd is the game between the Saints and Raiders in
    London on Sunday, August 5.

Teams that play in these games end up playing 5 preseason games instead
    of 4.

The contract between the league and the players has limitations on how
early the players may be required to report to training camp. Teams
that play in these early games are allowed to bring their players early
in order to be ready for the games.

John,

How are teams chosen for the HoF game and the other "special" games?

Is it whoever wants to do it and they draw the names out of a hat?
Does it rotate?

Deen to wonk,
'Saw
296.36FSHQA2::JHENDRYJohn Hendry, DTN 292-2170Fri Jul 27 1990 17:2726
The Hall of Fame game is a rotation with the teams being chosen for it
    several years in advance.

I think the "special" overseas games (ie, London and Tokyo) are also
going to be a rotation if they're not already. I'm not sure how
    they're chosen.

There are two other games in foreign countries during the preseason,
our game vs Pittsburgh in Montreal and a game in Berlin. Our game with
Pittsburgh was originally slated to be played in Dublin (mostly because
the teams were founded by 2 fine Irish families, the Sullivans and the
Rooneys) but the stadium was unavailable. I'm not sure how the game in
    Berlin was set up.

Generally, any city that wants to have a game and is willing to pay
enough of the expenses can contact a couple of teams about having a
preseason game there. It's then up to the promoters in the city to run
the game, and they take the risk of a small crowd.

In 1982, we played the Steelers at the University of Tennessee's
Neyland Stadium as part of the Knoxville Worlds Fair. The 95,000 seat
stadium sold out and I'm sure the promoters made a mint. The next
year, we were invited back and there was no Worlds Fair being held.
The place was only half full and I bet they took a loss.
