133.0. "The Official JimCalhounJihad(tm) Note" by CAM::WAY (The Saw is Family) Mon Jan 29 1990 10:46

Well, growing out of an idea spawned lasted Tuesday night, this topic
is the Official Home of the JimCalhounJihad(tm).

Since Calhoun used to coach Northeastern, and now coaches UCONN,
two charter members of the JimCalhounJihad(tm) are the Chainsaw
and the Sarge...

New members welcome at any time....

Go UCONN,

Well, I don't mind behind a Jihad of 1. That's cool.

I'm expecting the Wardlevanes, the bandwagon jumpers any time now, as
long as UCONN keeps on winning. Calhoun is taking a team of average talent
and winning...that's good...(remind you of anyone?)

And I'm enjoying myself.

Wonder where Jimbo is????

I will never, ever be a bandwagon jumper to the Jihad. If he'd
stayed at Northeastern I would have but for a loyal alumnus from
the University of Massachusetts, the University of Connecticut is
roughly equal to Boston College on the list of our least favorite
    schools.

Boston Huskies si, Storrs Huskies nay.

    Sorry, 'Saw.

    Saw,

I' here. I told you Calhoun would get this team playing. He's
a good coach. He took NU's program and built it into something,
and he's doing it at UCONN.

At NU, his players liked him, and he wasn't afaid to bench or
    discipline a guy.

THe NU Huskies led the nation in rebounding something like 3 straight
years, and Calhoun never had players over 6'6" or 6'7".

And until last year, Andre LeFleur was the all-time NCAA leader in
assists! Count this Huntington Ave. Huskie alum. and native nutmegger
in as a member of the Calhoun Jihad. Calhoun is the best thing to
happen to the state of Connecticut since Ray Lagenza!

Another Huskie fan here. When I was but a wee lad, Toby Kimball
was the name player. I really liked the Corny Thompson, Chuck Alexinas, and
???? McKay front court, which was a team that sghould have gone farther
than it did.

	Roll Huskies!

As long as we're going back in Huskie history, do you guys remember
Tony Hansen? Great player -- out of Holy Cross High in Waterbury. Was
even drafted by the Jazz, back when they were still in New Orleans.
Unfortunately, he was the classic "tweener," not quite big enough to
cut it as an NBA forward and not quick enough to be a guard. I think
he ended up playing in Italy.

As for Aleksinas, I always got a kick out of him. Huge guy, but
    absolutely no mobility at all.  He could leap with his upper body only;
really, his feet wouldn't leave the ground. Until this past season, he
had been playing, and if you believe him, doing very well in Italy.
This year, his contract was up and he held out, demanding a big
increase. The Italians told him to screw, so now he's back in
Connecticut waiting by the phone for some other Italian team to call.

Frank our very own note, well awwlright.

Yes sport fans playing with those guys Corny, and Chuck was a
thrill 8*) I'll tell you old Dom Perno couldn't wait to recruit
    this 5'8" wrestler.

While we are going back in time my favorite player growing up
was Joey Whelton. If they had the three point shot back then look
out scoring records. His favorite shot was straight up from the top
of the key. I think he's the coach at wethersfield High now.

More old names next week after we crunch Providence.

&%^%&$*# Joey Whelton beat us in the semifinals of the ECAC New
England Tournament in 1976. I was so pissed off that walking back
down the tunnel to the locker room I tripped over a TV cable and
sprained my ankle. Yet another reason to hate the Huskies.

133.17Calhoun a Cavalier???POCUS::SALTALAMACCHMon Feb 05 1990 17:2410
Heard a rumor in the local newspapers that Jim Calhoun might be
interested in the Virginia U. coaching job, when Terry Holland
leaves at the end of this season.

Given that he's HOT, I suspect we'll hear lots of coaching change
    rumors with his name mentioned.

    re-1
Calhoun was quoted as saying that he hadn't even been contacted
by Virginia. I realize Calhoun is hot but where could he go to take
a step UP. After coaching in a basketball have like Ct. and the big
east I'd think the Celtics job would be the only step up. 8*)

Jimbo, A move to Virgina would be a lateral movement for Calhoun
but considering the taxes are less severe as well as the winters
it could be a step up....

UCONN ranked 8th!!!!

Jim Calhoun must be doing something right.

The state is excited. (I mean, people who don't even know each other
are talking about it in stores, gas stations, etc.) The players
are excited. Hell, even I'm excited, and it usually takes someone
like Kelly Bundy on last Sunday's MWC to make me excited!

Chainsaw

PS Mike, I think that the UW is gonna kick Hogan's butt. If Hogan
fights Tyson, then he can claim he's hurt and back out of the
    sure-to-come match with UW!!!!!
133.21Huskie fan checking inJUMPIN::DOWERSJim DowersTue Feb 06 1990 15:5710
Another Huskie Fan checking in.

Calhoun has done a terrific job of building this team. I really like that
the Huskies have a lot of good players that make key contributions as opposed
to depending on one superstar player to carry the team. You have to give Jim
Calhoun a lot of credit, they play terrific defense and make the key shots.
I hope those rumors about him leaving are just rumors.

I attended UCONN during the Corny and Chuck era, but that team didn't have
half the poise and atheleticism that Calhoun's team has now.
133.22#8, can #1 be far offJURAN::MCKAYTue Feb 06 1990 21:347
    re Mike
My reply was tongue in cheek, I thought I had inserted a
smiley. To look at a move realistically I would think he'd have
to stay in the big three conferences to get a comperable ie. lateral
    environment.

133.23It's taken a while, but I had to check in... HPSCAD::PALMERMon Apr 02 1990 18:3912
Well, I haven't been poking around in here for a while, but had to register
myself in this topic.

I graduated 2 years ago from UConn & attended every home game this year
but 3, including all the Big East games. Saw the back to back Syracuse
and Georgetown home wins, the first game at Gampel, etc.

Maybe next year, I guess, I'll keep checking in here more often...

Awright, Mark...

Now, the Jihad has something to cheer about, what with Calhouns
run away Coach of the Year victory...

I graduated from Central in '80, but a lot of my buddies went to
UConn... so I kinda feel at home there, ya know...

Chainsaw

PS I may be biased, but I'll bet UConn could've given UNLV a better
    game lasted night ;^)
133.25DEMING::MCKAYTue Apr 03 1990 20:165
Frank I also agree UCONN would have given them a better game but
realistically I can think of 20 teams that would have given UNLV
a better game. I'm so glad I didn't watch the game I would have been
so disappointed after such an exciting tourney.

Yeah, I know Jimbo...

I watched Prime Time Wrassling 8^)

Still, I'm very pleased with the season, and the coaching, and the
turnaround this team has made. I hope the AD at UConn sees fit
to keep Calhoun around, and not let him get away...

Go Huskies!

133.27Corchianni to UConn????!!!!HPSCAD::PALMERTue Apr 10 1990 11:3818
I just spoke with a friend of mine from Connecticut. Apparently there's
an article in the Hartford Courant today that says Chris Corchianni has
been given the OK to talk to schools about playing his senior year somewhere
else and UConn is on his list of possibilities... Calhoun is going down
this week to talk w/ him. Some of the other schools are: Syracuse (OOUCH!)
Florda, LSU, and a few others I can't remember.

Some other news... UConn has signed a 6'2" 2nd team all New York shooting
guard.... Scott Burell hasn't showed up for Baseball practice yet, according
to coach Andy Blaylock, and Calhoun says Scott is going to play summer
hoops this year... Tate George has been impressing in some senior all
star games and a few NBA scouts have been talking about the Tater going
late in the first round! I don't buy this one, but I'd love to see it!

I saw the NABC game, and George was the 2nd best guard on the court,
after Travis Mays of Texas. He was very poised handling the point,
and shot well. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go at the end of
the first round/beginning of the second.
