SF is not an indifferent team in here, it's just that the team's fans
    aren't nutzo.

SF is thinking about activating former Dallas WR Mike Sherrard for
the playoffs. It might be a wise move, as they only have 3 WR on
their roster, Mike Wilson being the 3rd. Fletcher has been the
4th wideout when they've needed to go with 4.

They may also reactivate Michael Carter for the NFC Championship
    game.

In reply to Bruce. I am a fan of the 9ers but do not live and die
by what they do. I do think they are playing good football right now,
but they have room to improve. The NFC playoffs are gonna be a
dogfight. The 9ers are no shoe-in as every playoff team is a
contender. Now the AFC... well lets just say 40% of the playoff teams
    lost last week.

Can you imagine how many notes will be entered in 1 week if Denver and

I was just wondering what the news was out of San Francisco prior
to the play-off game on saturday. The Vikings are a talented
team with lots of weapons. What seems to be the outlook of the
49ers? I hope they take this game seriously. Out here in

I know what you mean. A.C. has lit the niner secondary up before.
The thing that scares me is whether the 9ers defense learned anything
on guarding Carter. Two years ago the 9ers just could not get it out
of their heads that Carter needed double teaming. The problem this
year could be Hassahn Jones. I am hoping for Schnelker to forget
about which star to use saturday. This game is more evenly matched

    re: .18, .20

In the '87 Minn-SF playoff game, AC burned the 49ers for well'
over 200 receiving yards and caused the '9ers great heartache in a
    34-21 Viking win.

In the '88 rematch, it was Jerry Rice that was causing the
heartache in the 34-9(??) 49er win.

Point is that both Jerry Rice and Anthony Carter are great
receivers who are gamebreakers and they've both had brilliant
performances in past playoff appearances against one another's teams.
How the 9ers handle Carter and how the Vikings handle Rice will
play a big part in determining which team wins. I look
for Rice to have a better day simply because the 49ers have done
an excellent job of getting him the ball all season long, even
with double coverage most of the time. To the Vikings credit,
it seems that they've been looking to get the ball to AC more
more as the season has progressed.

This should be a great game to watch. I think the 9ers will
win, but I wouldn't bet on it either, no matter what the spread.

I didn't know that he was hurt.

Any team that neglects to pay attention to Taylor should go and
talk to the LA Rams DB's. I'm sure they remember him real well.

With all due respect to Taylor, Jerry Rice is the receiver that
opposing defenses try to stop. This year, try is all that they've
    done.

                                           Glen J.

p.s. - If it weren't for J. Taylor, my FFL team probably would have
finished 2-11 or something, instead of 7-6. I had Montana
as one of my QB's so he proved to be quite an asset. :-)

Not surprisingly, the Niners absolutely killed the Vikings today.
It's hard to belive that Montana looks better every game, but he
keeps getting better! Credit the offensive line with give Joe just
enough time to get rid of the ball.

Minnesota is in sad need of a quarterback; I couldn't believe
Burns waited until half-time to pull Wilson...it was obvious the
Niners had his number. Also looks like the Walker trade didn't
buy the Vikes a spot in the Super Bowl. They're going to have to
redesign their entire offense in order to give Walker a chance to
    contribute though.

The only team from day 1 that has worried me about the niners

Well the 9ers played a great game offensively. I still believe that
their defense is suspect. The offense looks like a machine that can
either kill you with big plays or tortue you with the long sustained
drive. I still believe that defense wins championships and the
9ers better put pressure on Everett. I know that Bruce May got alot
of grief in another note for questioning John Robinson of the Rams
but HE is the weak point of the Rams.

For what its worth, in the last 3 years the 9ers have played the Vikings
as many times as the Rams. I don't think familiarity will play that
big a part in next weeks game. The team that executes better wins. I

Huh? The 49ers played the Vikings last three years in the playoffs. I
do not recall if they met in the regular season in the last three
years, (not this year) but the most they could have met in one season
is just one game since they are in different divisions.

The Rams play the 49ers twice each season, so that is 6 times in the
last three years. That has to be more than the number of games between
the 49ers and the Vikings. Plus the Rams defeated the 49ers in an
exhibition (not that it means anything :) in Tokyo this preseason.
So that's at least 7 times.

.33 Charles what I was trying to say is that the vikings and 9ers
have played eachother as much as the rams and the 9ers. I did miss
one calculation and that was this year. In the past three years,
I believe that the 9ers and vikes have played eachother 5 times
including playoffs. The rams and 9ers have played eachother
6 times excluding the relatively unimportant pre-season. That is
why I believe Familiarity will NOT be as big an issue as execution

I checked and yes the Vikings did play the 49ers last season in the
regular season. So they would have played the 49ers 4 times if they
had not play the Vikings in regular season in 87. If they did meet in
regular season that year that would make it 5 times in the last three.
Preseason games are rightfully unimportant. But I still think being in
the same division the players are closer. Of course, I cannot say that
familiarity is a huge factor, but one cannot deny that all in all these
teams know the other really well.

There is only one team in the league that has a shot at beating the
49ers, and that's the RAMS. Both teams have great speed on offense,
and both teams have a swarming defense. Montana is the best there is,
but he can be hassled real well by this Rams defense. Cunningham was
ineffective and so was Sims.

I hope its a good, close game, dictated by the defenses. The Rams have
a better chance at winning if the offensive line can wear down the 49er
defense in the 4th quarter.

49er fans claim that the 13-12 loss to the Rams was because Lott was out
and Siefert was experimenting with the offensive line. Perhaps. Lott played
and the offensive line was pretty stable when the Rams manhandled them
in Anaheim (and would have won, if it weren't for those 4th quarter
fumbles). Yeah, Montana had a great game statistically, but take away
those two Taylor runs (s**t tackling), and Montana was stopped.

Are the Rams exhausted? Yep. Can they rise to the occasion? Dunno.
The fans will have a field day...the media already are.

Say, lets really put something on the line, like water rights for the state.

Actually, the Rams defense is going to have to wear down the
SF offense in the 4th quarter or else this game could be history.
Whatever the case it will be a *great* game to watch. If SF plays
with the intensity of last Saturday there will be no stopping the

I never underestimate the Rams when playing the 49ers. Anybody who
suggests that the Rams just mail-in the score is underestimating the
Rams. While the 9er offense is great, the Rams are their equal with
not as many STARS. The offensive line for the Rams is BIG and
physical. I hope that Michael Carter can play and be effective.

The defense for the Rams always gives Joe problems. Rams can and have
in the past stopped both Craig and Rathman on the ground. The Rams

I read that Vince Newsome might not be able to play for the Rams. He
hurt his ankle in the Giants game. This means that Gray will play more
as a safety, the corners will not be as strong. I even read that they
might use a linebacker (Wilcher) to cover one of the wideouts. Rams
might be in for a long afternoon.

Michael Carter/Doug Smith contest will be a good one to watch. The
game might come down to this matchup.

BTW, the weather forecasters say we could get a lot of rain this
weekend, but not sure which day. Candlestick field is not all that
great usually, and in the rain it will be a mess. This changes the
complexion of the game...Montana's short passes will REALLY hurt the
Rams if they end up slipping and sliding on the field.

Of course, two can play at this game. :^)

Each NFL team is allowed to protect 37 players on their active roster.
Any player that they do not protect automatically becomes a Plan

The Rams defense HAS to play better than they did against the
Giants to win this game. The Rams have played two very tough road
games while the 49ers had a laugher. But I remember 1983 when the
Redskins went 14-2 (I think) then clobbered the Rams 51-9 in their
first playoff game and advanced to the Super Bowl (where they were
smoked) on a questionable pass interference call. The point being
that a defending champ will see a team's best game every week and
can run out of gas before the season is over. Did the 49ers peak
last week? It's hard to tell because the Vikings could've had as
much to do with the score as the 49ers. Regardless, the two best
teams in the NFL are playing this week. Take the 49ers. Give the
    7 points. Then pray.

I think the spread is accurate in this game. Everett and company (save for
a couple of veterans) haven't played a game of this caliber (championship)

the Niners to grind up the Rams slowly but effectively.

Something's that always puzzled me:

Whenever I've watched the 49ers, Montana releases the ball (usually)
within 2.5-3 seconds after taking the snap (he's even quicker than Marino).
More often than not, he's released the ball before the receiver has even made
his cut. So we're talking great timing here, but we ARE talking timing
patterns. Since the defense is allowed to chuck the receiver within five yards
of the line of scrimmage, why isn't this being done in order to disrupt this
timing???

In regards to the question concerning chucking 49ers receivers
to upset the timing of their routes......the 49ers often send a
receiver in motion to prevent the defense from being able to bump him.

This allows the reciever to break from the line of scrimmage cleanly.

Joe put a lot of distance between himself and Everett in that game.
Except for some nervousness in the first series and overthrowing
Rice a couple of times, Joe was right on the money. I was particularly
impressed in the way he avoided being sacked. There was one play where
Kevin Greene was coming at him full speed...Joe pump-faked, Kevin went
for the fake, and Joe then threw for a completion. He was able to
make the right decision on the second, third, and fourth receivers
in the whole game.

Everett held on to the ball too much. There were times when he could
have run with the ball, but tried to find open receivers when the blocking
wore down. He ended up throwing some wild passes, and some interceptions.
Rams gave up on the ground game in favor of the pass. That's OK if you
got a hot QB in the game. Everett wasn't yesterday, and it seemed that
the SF defense just got better and better through the 4th quarter.

The CBS announcers talked about how great an offensive coordinator Zampese
is. Hard to be great when you only get 156 yards total offense and 3 points.

Being at a game you can see things you don't see on TV and
vice-a-versa. At the game you get to see the defensive backfield
and receivers the entire play, i.e. the play developing. This
past week Cleveland had receivers wide open all day. Denver had
better tighten that up big time or Montana will pick them apart
worse than the biggest blow-out sayers are predicting.

now they're packed away on ice again until next year. And here I
was pulling for the Giants to beat the Rams so the Niners wouldn't
    have to play them again!

Now, on to the next 49er game, SB XXIV.

I don't think I'm ready to make a prediction yet. I need to sift
through more data before I can decide how many TD's the 49ers will
win by. One key statistic - how many Elway interceptions will be
    returned for TD's by the 49er defense? I don't know, that's hard
to say. Two? Three? On the offense, who is going to end up with
the most TD's, the running backs or the wide receivers? Will the
Broncos be able to do better than a field goal or two? Will the
    Broncos score at all?

What it all boils down to is, will the 49ers beat the spread?
I think it depends on turnovers and special teams. If the Broncos
can get some key turnovers and decent field position, they may be
able to keep it close. But if the 49ers can put together another
excellent game and avoid the big mistakes, they'll win going away.
Steve Young will start the 4th quarter. Non-Niner fans will be
complaining about what a boring game it was. I just hope no 49ers
    get hurt spiking the ball.

You're all just jealous that I got to grow up watching Joe Willie, while you
were saddled with the sad likes of Norm Sneeze or Craig Moron. Speaking
of growing up and getting to watch great players, Lee, what are your
personal thoughts on Jim Thorpe?

Dan
48.126BOSOX::TIMMONSI'm a Pepere!Thu Jan 18 1990 09:1838
Dan, sad to say, there was no TV when Jim Thorpe played, so I didn't
get to watch him. No radio coverage then, either. Besides, back
then, I rooted for the cavalry, not the indians. I suppose if I
had grown up in Cleveland, I'd have been a fan of the Indians.

As far as who I did get to see on TV back when I was growing up, Otto
Graham comes to mind. Namath is a VERY distant qb, unless you count
just one game as a measure of greatness.

Namath's prediction should be compared to Babe Ruth's supposed
prediction. But, the Babe played far above the average player for
many years. Namath did it for one, count it, one, game. So, Joe
Willie is the top-ranked QB for making one prediction, I don't recall
any other QB doing the same. For a career, he's in the second tier,
    at best.

Come to think of it, I'd rather have grown up in Cleveland than
to have been a Namath fan. How manly can a guy be when he has a
    white shag rug?

Namath was the product of a great football mind, Weeb Eubank, as
well as the media capital of the world. He wasn't lousy, but he
wasn't a good as you make him out to be. He had great receivers
and running backs for their time.

Has Bill Walsh ever answered that Namath is his selection, when
asked a specific question about the BEST qb to play in the NFL,
or was his quote taken out of context? If it was a specific question,
please state it. And, who asked it? Joe Willie's mother? You?

Dan, your credibility is fading quickly when you make such rash
and unfounded statements regarding your personal opinion on
such a player. Why, you've even given up on Bill James, right?

Funny how someone can be an absolute authority when he agrees with

You mean the year before the Super Bowl year, 1967, when he destroyed
the all time record for passing yardage, he didn't have any great games,
didn't get any fame? Or two years earlier when he was one of the top
picks in football, and chosen ahead of the Heisman Trophy winning

happens, does it?) it was because Joe Namath, starting QB of Alabama,
Bear Bryant's finest QB he'd ever coached was only "just okay"?

Lee, if there ever was a great QB, Joe Namath was a great QB. The

Dan, /Don was right on the money with his reply about the quality
of the AFL in the 60's. I was an AFL fan, primarily because it
was a wide open type of game. And, this game leads to higher offensive
stats. Take a look at some of the QB's that were starters in the
AFL during that time, and you'll find that more than a few were
retreads from the NFL. Guys that were 2nd and 3rd string, or about
ready to retire, when the AFL got them.

To be honest about it, I will say that the Jets would never have
won the SB without Namath. They most likely wouldn't have even
been in the game without him. But that doesn't make him the best.

I know what year it was, /Don. Are you trying to tell me that
there was sweeping changes in AFC defensive backs from the
'67 season to the '68 season that somehow taints Namath's

It is truly a wonderful feeling to be a 49er fan these days. They are
a great team with great professionals. No one on this team chose to
rub the loss into Denvers face. The game was a picture of executing a
a game plan to its utmost.

I really hope that someday the true Denver faithful will be able to
revel in a championship. It would be hard for me to find more loyal
fans than those of the Broncos. The Broncos are my second favorite
team and I really felt embarrased with the thumping that was put on
them. As Rathman put it "we didn't even use all of our designed plays
this afternoon". Why are people saying that alot of teams could have
beaten the Broncos on sunday? This statement is doing an injustice to
the 49ers. In the 49ers last 5 games a total of 36 points have been
scored on their defense. In those same 5 games the offense has scored
a total of 173 points. That is an average of 34.7 to 7.1, not to
shabby of a record. The fact that the 9ers humiliated the number 1
defense in the league in Minnesota. They also humiliated the so called
"heir apparent" to the 9ers in the Rams. Both of those games the 9ers
called the "dogs" off early in the second half. I know Montana played
in the second half but there were very few passes thrown in either
second half. Considering how the 9ers have played since that monday
night against the Rams, perhaps THEY(9ers) are the reason the Broncos got
demolished moreso than the so called ineptitude of the Broncos. In
sports, Success does not last long and I am choosing to revel in the
fact that the 9ers would have demolished ANYONE on sunday.

Anyone out in the Bay Area have some info on the Niners' Plan B
decisions? I expected Eric Wright, Keena Turner, and Mike Wilson
(three of the Fab Five) to be unprotected, but I didn't expect Brent
Jones to be on the list. Are they planning to start Jamie Williams at
TE, or will they be going with Wesley Walls? From what I saw of Walls
this season, I wasn't impressed. He always seemed to be making a
crucial penalty. Leaving Helton unprotected is fine by me...there must
    be better punters out there.

Also, any word on whether Mike Holmgren is leaving for a head coaching
job? It seems like the Jets are going after someone else, and I haven't
heard anything about the Cardinals selection process. I hope he stays
on, of course. Joe really flourished this year with Holmgren as the
    offensive coordinator.

It's great being a Niner fan out here in Donk country. Donk fans seem
to be taking comfort in the fact that the 49ers would have beaten any
team the way they were playing, forgetting, of course, of just how poor
an effort Denver put forth. A local columnist is advocating an Elway

Picking up Smerlas may not be a bad move. He may have one or two more
years left in him. Besides, he'll only have to play backup noseman
behind Carter, so he shouldn't suffer much wear and tear. He can take
Kugler's place, since he has retired. Do they really want to carry
three nose tackles, though? Perhaps they should pick between Burt
and Smerlas and just keep one.

Does Waymer play safety or corner? Some depth in the secondary is
always a good idea, especially if McKyer wants out and we're forced
to start Pollard at one corner. BTW, any more news on McKyer's status
regarding the doghouse (in or out?).

Who will start at TE? Will they re-sign Jones, or start Williams or
    Walls?

One interesting point (which may have already been addressed) will be
to see how SF evaluates talent over the next few years without Walsh.
I think the 49ers' front office is probably the best in the league, but
I wonder how many of those good unknowns were due to Walsh's good eye.
I'm thinking of people like Don Griffin and Tim McKyer, both excellent
DBs from unknown schools. Or how much of the player development was
due to coaching? Perhaps the Niners' staff could have gotten anyone
in there and turned him into a strong contributor.

Another random thought...in light of Jim Kelly's big contract (which is
unbelievable), Eddie will soon be coughing up some major bucks to make
Joe the highest paid player in the game, which is only fitting,
since he is the best player in the game.

I would think that Smerlas would not want to play for a team on which
he'd be second-string. With Michael Carter already with the 49ers (and
considered by many to be the top nose tackle in the NFL) I'd think
Smerlas would prefer to PLAY during his last two or three years in the
League. This isn't meant to be a knock at the 49ers....they are
definitely the BEST team to play for.....due to talent on both the
field and in the front office (read DeBartolo).

As to Waymer....I was surprised by the quote I read in the paper. He
said he would give the Saints a chance to match the 49ers offer!! How
can he do this?? New Orleans is unable to discuss any contract terms

There is some questions in SF as to if Michael Carter will ever
be able to perform at his previous level. This may be why they
are looking to sign Smerlas and may talk Burt out of retirement
    again.

They are also talking to Gerald McNeil and Ron Brown about return
man duties. McNeil seems excited about those possibilities, especially

I'm not so sure about that. The 9ers do seem to get tough with

a good example. The Niners were tired of his perpetual injuries

Yes, it was an extremely sad story. I think it was a player back in
the '60s, so I wouldn't confuse it with current ownership. I think it
was more a sign of the times, the way the NFL was in those days. This
particular guy had an injured knee. The team doctors kept convincing
him he could play, the coaches too, so he kept playing, and the knee
got worse. By the time his career ended, he was a shambles. Today, he
needs help getting out of bed. The story was in Sports Illustrated
within the last 2 years. Don't know how it got settled.

DeBartolo did transfer the ownership to one of his father's
corporations, which Eddie now owns. The NFL wantys each team to
be its own corporation, and not owned by another. Several other
teams (including the Broncos, I believe) also operate this way.
The owners are pissed because they use this to point at why the
Niners do so well. Instead of trying to copy the Niners, some petty
owners are trying to limit the $ they spend. Of all the teams that
are owned by corporations, the 49ers were the only ones mentioned
who should lose their draft picks. Anyone remember the flak about
Eddie giving bonuses to the Niners after they won a few years back?
The Broncos cried about it, and so they made it illegal. Last year
Eddie flew the team to Hawaii to give them their SB rings. The
Broncos cried about that so Eddie couldn't do that any more. Last
Christmas, Eddie gave the wives of the players furs [poor choice
of a gift, but that's a different issue], the Broncos started to
cry about that, but Eddie showed that they didn't have a chance
in court to prevent him from that.

    Why don't they wise up?

The Niners do treat their players better than any other team in
the league and I think it correlates to the money they spend:

Wide-body aircraft on all charter flights (it makes a big difference
with a football team, I speak from personal experience)

Single rooms for all players on the road

Little things like the furs, organization-wide trips and so on

    Nice team facilities

On sales of team items, the Niners would only get a full share of
the money if they were actually making them and selling them.
Licensing fees from all NFL licensed products go to NFL Properties
and the teams and the league share these fees equally. The Niners
don't necessarily get more money just because there are more Niners

This is a very astute obversation but the complaint isn't about winning
the SB. The complaint is about the 49'ers organization paying 2nd and 3rd
string players more than other teams can pay their starting players.
Plan B free agency is supposed to allow players the freedom to sign on with
the highest paying team. DeBratlo(tm) is using the corporate funds to not
only keep the existing players but sign on free agents at such a high salary
that other NFL teams cannot compete. If I was a free agent I'd look to see what
the 49'ers 2nd string player is getting paid and then ask for that salary.

Maybe the 49'ers knew this would come down and that is why they traded players
for Picks in this years draft ?

    On losing money:

Remember folks, not all owners/teams have the same deals with the
stadiums they play in. Some own the stadium, the facilities, and
control the concessions. Others lease the stadium, lease facilities,
and get NO concession money. These results in some teams having
higher operating costs. I'd say a team like Denver would have highter
operating costs because they would pay more in travel, since all
the teams they play are ~1000 miles away at least, while east coast
teams are sometimes a hundred or so miles away. Also, some of the
newer owners are playing off humongous loans used to buy their
    toys...er, teams.

So now you want to legislate a law that says the teams must make

and they have to lay off Steve Walsh because they aren't profitable.

I sincerely doubt that the 49ers real operating costs exceed what they take in
from tv money alone much less TV plus ticket sales plus bonus playoff $$$$.

However they may be making the numbers lie in order to show a loss for tax
purposes.

20-20 did a great show on how big movie production companies make the net profit
for a blockbuster movie as low as possible (or make it show a loss) because many
movie stars have contracts calling for x% of the profits. When the movie never
makes a profit on paper then they don't get a dime of this contract clause.
After watching it I'm sure that any business dealing in entertainment can make
any profit or loss claim they want to by fudging things.

The Sportschannel quoted Elway as saying, "I don't know", when asked if
he will honor his remaining contract.

I for one hope he does. There is absolutely noway, nohow, he will win a

loser of Superbowls. A loser doesn't even make it to the big dance.

Good point about the starters, but Dixon?? He's a wash out... IMO,
These holdouts might be good (not all of 'em), but they don't have the

I don't think you can really look at who the 49ers played at one
particular point in the game and say they are/aren't starters. The key
to the 49ers is the incredible depth, especially on defense. Many of
the players who were playing in the second half may end up as starters
and many of the first half players won't be starting. When you've got
someone whose been to multiple Pro Bowls like Fred Smerlas playing in
the 2nd half of the game, whose to say whose a starter and who isn't?
It is not even accurate to look at who starts the game game for the
49ers and say that that player is/isn't ahead of another player on the
    depth chart.

I think it's embarrasing for the Bronk's to get beaten by the 2nd
stringers of the niners. besides what you were calling the 1st
stringers of the 9'ers in that game weren't the real 1st stringers(like
somebody mentioned in this conference). and since it is only a
pre-season game the 2nd stringers or you might say the rookie players
will show off their stuff. don't get me wrong on this but to me the
9'ers always start the season slow(even on pre-season games) but by the
middle of the season they come on strong. Like the papers are saying it
is an"open season for the niners". almost every team will get a shot at
the niners to prevent them from making a 3-peat and every team has
a chance of doing it unless they blow it-take monday's night game
against the saints. the saints had been given every chance they have
but still they blew the game away thru bad play calling and some good
plays by the niners. i wouldn't be surprised if the niners survive this

hard, I dont think either one of them wanted to stay undefeated.
The only upset is that If chicago could have beat the Vikings wed
have a closer race for the #1 and #2 division Champs in the NFC.
Hope the Giants can beat San Fran Next week, I dont want SF to have

Maybe NOW, but they did stop the RedArmy (tm) from crossing into pro
football immortality. Nice pick by Newsome and the last TD drive reminded
me of what the Rams were capable of. Maybe they will go nowhere this
year but they did stop the 'Niners when it counted and countered with a
brilliant time consuming drive that drove the nail in the coffin.
    Better luck against the Jints.

Like George Siefert said "This is the best defensive game that
this team had played". It was a good game alright, with the defense
both carrying both teams to what their records in the W-L columns says
right now. Both quarterbacks-Montana & Simms had a bad day due to good
plays by the defense of both teams. Credit the 49ers win due to bad
call by Parcells on 4th & goal and a good goal line stand by the 9ers
on that particular play. But if the Giants made that play then it would
another story. What counts the most though is that the defense played
the pass well- they're ranked at 24 out of 28 teams and also that the
running game came alive in the winding down minutes of the game thru
some good running by Carter & Sydney who are spelling in for Craig.
After this kind of game I won't be surprise if the 49ers go undeafeated
in their remaining games coz' they're usually strong at this time of
    the year.

I just caught a very incredible rumor. Word is that Bill Walsh has
been offered the Tampa Bay coaching job. Rumor is that he will not
accept the gracious offer. Lou Holtz is lobbying for the Tampa Bay
spot. Finally, the last rumor I heard was if Holtz leaves ND, Walsh
will replace him as the Irish coach.

Although its not likely the Rams would have to win the last 3 to even
think of having a shot at a wildcard berth that combined with SF
clinching it would normally have me thinking that SF may play a little
soft.......Not this time, this is going to be payback time for SF, they
would have a perfect season still rolling if it wasnt for the rams, I
think SF will be out to porve that the rams victory was a fluke.....I
think this will be a highlight game of the weekend. I like to see the
rams stay alive but the smart money will go on SF...

Not a SF fan but no how to handle realty....
I dont get to see many SF games but I did notice

    Hey Jesse
When do you think great underachieving coach of the Lambs will get
fired. Robinson reminds me alot of Dean "Snuffy" Smith in that he
has lots of excellent losses. The 49ers are about ready to start
the playoff machine up. I have noticed that most experts were saying
that the 9er pass defense was suspect. In the last two weeks the pass
defense has been very solid even with Lott not playing this past week.
The so called experts were also saying that the 9er rushing game was
in deep doo doo. Well this past sunday the 9ers rushed for over 200
yards. I am just hoping and waiting for the 9ers to put it all
together in the same game. When and if they do, look out NFL. BTW
the lambs always play the 9ers tough but I am expecting a big 9er win
on the road. Just remember though the real season begins in about 4
    weeks.

The Niners aren't doing that good of a job covering the spread this
year.

That doesn't mean they're not good... they are. The line doesn't
determine how good a team is, however, it does indicate how good the
bettors believe the team to be in relationship to the team being played.
Given that, the Niners are not as good as people think.

Cincinnati played a defense of 6 defensive backs throughout almost
all of the game. They allowed San Fransisco to run the ball as much
as they wanted, knowing they could thereby "shorten" the game, and
hopefully, it would give them a chance to win a close game at the end.
It almost worked. Anyone who would go by the results of Sunday's game
and say that San Fransisco is starting to get its running game in gear
probably didn't see the game. If they did, and still feel its reliable
proof, they don't know that much about football.

dominated there openents. SF pulls out so many last min victories
they havent earned the respect that a tru 12-1 team may.....If they
can start beating people in the 1st 3 qtrs and put in some backups at
the end of the game to give some starters a rest Ill believe they are
great and deserve to win, untill then I think they rely too much on

The niners win much too many last minute games to consider it luck.
They continue to do it, and are successful. Five years from now people

I am a total Rams fan but I don't hate the '9ers, look it up in my

with the Rams, and especially when they play the Rams.

Gary will have 150+ yds rushing, no fumbles and three tds. Joe Dantana

You forget that the game is on the road and that the 9ers are so
"lucky". My guess is that the 9ers will win on a "lucky" throw from
"lucky" Montana to a "lucky" Taylor. The 9ers will then kick a "lucky"

All those things you listed arnet lucky, look at them to get a LUCKY
bounce or more likely a bad call by the ref to give them a LUCKY call.
A TD throw isnt lucky....But if theres 3 questionable calls and a lucky
turnover to set it up then its a lucky win. I wouldnt mind seeing
the rams win this one, they could actually be in the Wildcard hunt if
they win there last 3 (not likely)...But I think SF will have a score
to settle and win this one for real, not by 3 or 6 they will WIN IT by
    something like 35-17.......Hope Im wrong...

I was just commenting on the dude in here that says the 9ers are
"lucky". That really cracks me up. Actually the Rams should play
the 9ers tough as always. They posted a stat on sunday that was
pretty interesting. Seems like old "lucky" Joe has brought the
9ers back to victory in the last minutes of a game quite a few times.
As a matter of fact the game on Sunday was the 29th time. I guess
old "lucky" Joe must of brought his 4 leaf clover with him from
Notre Dame. In the words of Super Mex Lee Trevino "I'd rather be
lucky than good". Incidentally Jesse, even if the 9ers never win
