43.0. "DETROIT LIONS NOTE" by POGO::REED (Oklahoma State athletic supporter) Fri Dec 15 1989 15:31

There's plenty of room on the Lion's bandwagon--am I the only
one who jumped on recently? Next year look for Detroit to be
    a real threat.

That and they have to work on getting their turnovers down...

they've killed them this year.

Maybe they can trade Long to the Pats for some Wr's...

re:-1 Do you really think they need OL help? The only game I've
seen (Thanksgiving Day) the OL did good considering they were out
numbered at times. But that's an obvious drawback to this offense.

    he ate it.

Been a Lions fan since the early '50s (when Charlie Keller moved from
the Yankees to the Tigers -- but that's another story). They need a
lot more on defense, too! Their "bend-but-don't-break" philosophy just
won't cut it against a club like the 'Niners. The current pass rush is
pathetic, making it much tougher for the deep backs to cover the
wideouts. The only rush they get is from the linebackers, and if
they don't get to the QB, the short stuff is wide open.

All this may be true. What I see is a team that is very
talent rich, and young on top of it. I think with a couple
of good draft picks on the defensive side of the ball and
maybe a trade or two this team will be a contender. I see a
complete turn around in the central. The Bears and Vikes
are due for some tough time. While on the other hand, Tampa,
the Lions and Greenbay are up and coming Foot-A-Ball clubs
with lots of talent and youth. Look for the Pack to win
    the division this year....

You gotta be right. The main receiver this year, Johnson was
selling for IBM before this season. Rookie starter QB Peete
has been hurt most of the year. Backup QB Gagliano has been
traded 6(?) or more times in his career. Rookie RB Sanders
didn't start practicing with the team until *days* before
his first game. With what they have, the Lions have really
done well. With a few choice players and give some playing
time to the Rookies, this new offense will definitely win
    some games next year.

I just hope that Detroit will have some national TV coverage
    next year.

The best thing I love about the run and shoot is the fact that Sanders isn't
taking a lot of punishment in it. Everytime he gets the ball is is an almost
open field like situation. He isn't getting hit by 5-6 men at once. Hopefully
this will prolong his career beyond the average 5-6 years of a running back.

I think Sanders should be the pro-Bowl running back for the NFC this season.

They could use some Big men up front defensively. They do need some quality
receivers. I personally think gagliano is doing a good job this year. Maybe he's
found his nitche with the Run-and-shoot.

I don't think Peete's injury prone. I think since he was hurt this
year, Long and Hipple have been frequently in past years, that
need some help on the line. They can play well, but I would
draft one of them or a LB (Snow?) before I would go after Harris
or Ware or Rembert. Rembert might not be too bad, but I think
the WR's are doing the job.

4 in a row, tied with the Bears... not to shabby...

Does Murray have a shot at the accuracy record?
43.12POGO::REEDOklahoma State athletic supporterTue Dec 19 1989 18:1618
Sanders ran for 104 yards and 1 TD on 21 carries to give him
1312 yards for the season. This broke Billy Sims' rookie record
(1308) in 1980 and the Lions' rookie record. Sanders needs
125 yards to beat the Lions' best year--Sims' in 1981 with 1437
yards. This was Sanders 6th 100+ yard game.

The Lions had Tampa beat 33-0 until the last play of the game
when Mark Carrier caught a pass in a 69 yard play. It would have
been the first shutout in 6 years.

The Lions' 4-game winning streak is the longest since the start
    of the 1980 season.

The Lions got surprisingly close to the playoffs this year when
    you consider the shakey start.

BTW, I've got the Holiday Bowl tape too. Actually I've got
several games on tape but the best one is last years against

Sanders' last rookie game broke a couple of Billy Sims' records
as a Lion. Sanders ran for 158 yards to give him 1470 to beat
Sims' '81 year of 1437. With 3 more TDs in this final game
against Atlanta Sanders ended up with 14 TD. One more than
Sims' best years in '80 and '81. Sanders also had 7 100+ yard
    games in his rookie year.

Sanders has been pulling himself out of games since high school. He
could have set records as a high school senior but let the other
backs go in. In college Sanders played only 2 or 3 quarters in many
games. If he cared about setting records he could have set some that
may never would be broken. He could have added another 1000 yards
to his record! He's a true class act.

I'd really like to see the Lions rip right through the league next year.
I'd love to see them come out averaging 30 points a game or so.

The reason I'd like to see this is to shut up all those supposed experts that
said that the run and shoot offense is too inflexible for the NFl. All I heard
all preseason and for the 1st half of the season is that the Lions were doomed
to embarresment for the next 5 years because they had gotten rid of all their
conventional sized lineman for smaller more mobile players. I love to see it
when the experts are wrong....

I'd love to see the Giants vs. The lions in the next few years...Two totally
opposite styles of play.

Parcells thinks the league is going to become oversized and is aquiring 300
lb linemen and 3-4 large blocking tight ends. Mouse Davis is putting in an
offense geared around smaller lineman and lots of Wr's reading patterns
on the fly.

Can't wait to see which style wins.....

Sanders got 69 of the 70 votes for AP's Rookie of the Year. The other
vote went to Andre Rison (Indianapolis). Sanders led the NFC with 1470
yards, 10 behind league leader Christian Okoye. He averaged 5.3 yards
per carry and scored 14 TDs. He probably could have passed Okoye's
total but sat out much of the 2nd half in the Atlanta game. "It wasn't
a goal of mine," he said of leading the league in rushing. "I didn't
set any statistical goals. I didn't have any particular mark."

Talking about the RotY honor, "It's a tremendous honor, but it is
really an indication of how our offense played as a whole. I didn't
feel at a disadvantage by missing training camp. I missed a little
hitting. That didn't pose many disadvantages at all as far as the
offense. I was able to learn as I went along, week to week."

Sanders, among other records, set new NCAA marks for rushing yards
(2628) and TDs (39) last year at Oklahoma State as a Junior.

I don't think it was a bad pick for a couple of reasons:

    1. He apparently has a stronger arm than Peete, and thus can
play the r&s better than Peete.

    2. Kiper had him listed as his #1 QB in the draft.

    3. Having 2 QB's is definately an asset, no a liability.

and McDaniels)to have a good day, with regard to intys.

Brown? Has Brown caught more than 10 passes all year? I know he
fair catches more than his share. Good thing he won the Heisman,
we know the talent the ND wideouts have....

Well, I guess it's time for the Lions to win their last 3 games and
finish up in true Lion fashion and a mediocre record. They proved last
night that if the defense played well, the rest of the team is in place
to at least be in the playoff hunt. Wouldn't any defensive help for
the #1 pick look big right now instead of Ware? They've proven they
don't miss Chuck Long. Or Eric Hipple....

If only they had won some of those close games (TB by 3, GB by 3,
Wash. and Chi. in OT, the Raiders was a close game...) they'd still
be in the hunt. Maybe they can find a way to sure up their defense,
and make sure Davis and Jones stay on the coaching staff and we can
really make a run at it this year...
