432.0. "SPORTS -- Requiescat in Pace?" by CAM::WAY (Futue te ipsum et caballum tuum) Tue Dec 18 1990 13:40

The crowd was roaring, the ball was resting on their own 30 yard line.
The SPORTS quarterback looked up at the clock and grimaced. With
only 48 seconds left, and 70 yards to go, he'd have his work cut
out for him.

As he strode purposefully to the line, he thought back to the
many nailbiters he'd pulled out. He smiled as he recalled his
victory in the ASABET Bowl, and how they'd won the OURGNG title
as a result.

But now, now it was looking particularly gloomy. In that game,
the tight end Riggen had stepped forward when things looked bleakest,
and hauled in the winning TD reception.

But today, who would answer the call. Riggen had gone down with
a concussion early in the 4th quarter. The second string tight
end was a rookie, who was commonly referred to by the sportscasters
as "Hand of Stone" Malone. No, it wouldn't be the tight end today.

Confidently, he crouched behind the center, and barked the signals.
The ball was snapped and he faded back. The Management team had
a vicious blitz on. Deftly he pulled out of the pocket and rolled
right. Looking, looking.....who could he throw too?

And so folks, that's where we're at. It doesn't seem like we have
a home for SPORTS anymore, and it doesn't seem like we will have
one before the final gun sounds.

SPORTS has survived so much, but it looks this time like the final
curtain is falling on that which we have enjoyed so much.

OURGNG can't hold it, and with the amount of network links that
it would entail I seriously doubt that I could get permission to
put it on CAM....

Anybody out there got a node?

A node? A node? My kingdom for a node?

Hoping beyond hope,
Chainsaw

Let it die.... to be reborn as a number of separate conferences on the
individual sports.

When I get back from vacation, I will look into hosting a college
hoop conference on my workstation.

is there a notes file out there called NBA ???

Oh, I can see it now. SPORTS dies so we all meet in another conference
all of a sudden. Imagine the current members of those conferences when
this fraternity (no offense to Karen et.al.) of ours comes barging in.
That would be like the homeless shelter closing so all the bums head
over to the Ritz Carlton. :-)

Well, I had an idea last night.

If what Doug Ross says is true (and gee, I sincerely will miss ya
Doug. If you ever up this way you'd better stop in for a home brew
so we can finally meet), then there won't be a need for SPORTS
as we know it.

Now, I don't think I can get permission to host SPORTS on CAM, but
I do think I might be able to start a SPORTS TAVERN notes file.
I'm sure it'd attract just the junk noters....;^)

Let me see what I can do.

Mac, I know there's a RUGBY LEAGUE (yuk!) notesfile. Do you think
there'd be enough interest out and around to start a rugby notes
file?

Enquiring minds might be schlepped for the lasted time,

I also do not think that descending on these other conferences in
hordes is the answer. The AMERICAN_FOOTBALL conference is pretty tame,
pretty tightly moderated, and resides in Sweden. I don't think that
conference would tolerate what goes on in here, and rightfully so. It has set
it's own tone and style, and changing it would be most unfortunate and unfair.
The BASEBALL conference was created to get discuss baseball, and get
away from the bashing that goes on in here. It has succeeded in that, and I
don't think an influx of that type of noting would, or should, be tolerated.
There is a CELTICS conference but no NBA or COLLEGE HOOP conferences.
Doug's idea for a College BB note is a good one. Can the rest of the NBA fit
into the CELTICS conference? Maybe, but it would be tough. Alot of the
active members in that conference are not heard from in here at all.
Same goes for Hockey and Bruins.

I'm afraid we've all combined to create our own strange beast here,
and it's not the kind of beast that people want in their "zoo". I hope we
do find a home, but I can see the difficulties inherent in doing so.

I can put SPORTS on node QUOKKA (a VAXstation II/GPX in Colorado
Springs) but I can't guarantee how long QUOKKA will remain on the net.
It will be around for at least several months and possibly for quite a
bit longer. It is my old workstation (my new one is a DECstation 3100
running Ultrix, so it can't host a notes conference) and is not used
for much other than hosting another conference (OZ). I've got plenty
of disk space to accommodate the conference.

If nothing better shows up, I'll take it, at least for now.

Oh, this is unbelievable fans, what a brilliant catch!

okay, here's the story. My manager okayed transfering SPORTS to CAM.

However, our system manager is out today, and I don't want to make the
transfer by myself. (lack of privs for one thing). Anyway, I'll
be back in on Jan 2.

Jeff, if it's okay to leave the file physically on OURGNG until then,
we can move it. Otherwise, I suppose I could come in one day next
week (when the system manager is here) and deal with it...

Congrats folks, SPORTS lives...

Chainsaw, instead of moving this version of SPORTS, why not archive it
and start a new version. I mean, new era and all.........

I think Haw's suggestion should be taken and run with. Jeff was going
to do that anyway if the conference stayed on OURGNG. Mike Corbett
used to archive and restart Sports after the Super Bowl.
432.23VAXWRK::NEEDLEMoney talks. Mine says "Good-Bye!"Fri Dec 21 1990 11:559
I was about to suggest the same thing. And if privs are a problem, you can
start the new one in your own directory and have your system mangler move it to
NOTES$LIBRARY when he gets back. I'm sure we can all MODIFY/ENTRY later. And
this way, people can migrate to the new one while discussions in the old one
run down.

As always, just axe if you need any assistance.

As the official king of the non-technoweenies, I am sad to announce a
departure from our ranks. The Hawkster made some sort of suggestion
having to do with _archiving_ and _conserving resources_ that actually
made sense to the preemminent technoweenie, Jeff Needle. To compound
matters, the 'saw (a technoweenie of some repute) hadn't even thought
    of Hawk's idea.

Hawkster, it's time to turn in your Dockers for a plastic pocket

Okay, here's the scoop:

I'll start a new SPORTS conference on CAM::

But, the catch is, I'd like to hold off access until
Jan 2. See, that way, the system manager will be around
	should anything go south.

I've got enough privs to get at NOTES$LIBRARY, so I can
do that, set up the moderators, and I'll even try to
start the stock topics (Rugby, NFL, NBA, NHL, AL, NL etc etc)

Hawk, welcome to technoweenie-dom. We have to have an initiation now,
so at the Nexted Get-Together (Patriots day?) you'll be formally
inducted. Till then, get down you 'weenie!
