294.0. "Actual witness to famous moment in sports" by SHALOT::MEDVID (Head Like a Hole) Mon Jul 16 1990 13:12

OK, time for another one of those fun notes. Hope this one hasn't
already been done (mods may delete if so). We've had notes on your
favorite play of all time and things like that. Let's take it one step
    further.

What was the most famous or significant sporting event or moment that
you actually witnessed. I'm not talking TV here. No. You had to be
at Fenway for Carlton's homer or at Three Rivers for the immaculate
    reception, etc.

Who can come up with the best? No fibbing now or else your conscience
    will eat you alive.

    Go for it!

1981 - Celts vs. Philly Game 5. Celtics down by 7 with 1:51 to go. My
brother and I were damn near depressed at this point in time, but the
Bird and Tiny wouldn't let it happen.

1990 - Bruins vs. goWhAle Game 5. Bruins down 5-2 after 2 periods and
are playing pitifully. Lemelin gets pulled, the Bruins come out flying
and score 4 goals in the final period, on enemy ice, to win.

    Funniest moment:

1978 - Lowell Auditorium - Golden Gloves championship - two flyweights
wailing the hell out of each other. One guy gets dropped and the other
was in such a frenzy he dove on him and continued throwing the leather.
    Crazy.

Mickey Mantle day, Yankee Stadium, 1968, I believe. Doubleheader
vs. Cleveland - honored the Mick at halftime. A great day. Got
the Mick to autograph a baseball for me.

Game 4, 1976 World Series, Yankee Stadium. The Reds finish their
sweep of the yankees. I was jubilent, since I loathe the yanks.
Pete Rose totally psyches out Mickey Rivers.

1979 World Cup, Montreal Olympic Stadium.

Edwin Moses destroys a world class field in the 400M hurdles, winning
by a huge margin. Most impressive athletic feat I've ever seen.

1982, Game 2, First Round NCAA Hockey Champeenship.

Northeastern Huskies beat Bowling Green in OT. Pandemonium on St.
    Botolph Street.

October 20, 1976. First Game ever at Giants Stadium in the
    Meadowlands.

Sometime, 1988, THE Duke of Dorchester wins a match at the WWF card
in Boston Garden. The greatest upset ever in Sports Entertainment!

Many others....including the 1978 playoff game between the Yanks

I caught Jesus's no-hitter against the Sumaria Mariners.

We won, 1-0, when Simon Peter drove Timothy across with a double.

Late in the game Judas bobbled one in Centerfield, but John, our
rightfielder was backing up and caught the ball before it hit the
ground.

Woulda been a perfect game, except the ump call a clear strike three
a ball, and we walked one of them.

I'll vouch for Dick's story about David too...

I went the night before JD went to the World Series in Yankee Stadium.
Game 3, of a 4-game, humbling defeat for the Yankees. The 1976 Yankees
were probably my favorite team of all time, as they were the first
division and pennant winners of my baseball watching lifetime. Yankees
lost that game something like 4-1, and their only run was a Jim Mason
(mediocre only on his very best days) HR into the right field stands
near the foul pole, not 3 rows from where I sat.

2 different times, I saw my favorite player, switch-hitter Roy White,
hit HR's in the same game from both sides of the plate.

In about 1972, I saw Wilbur Wood lose both games of a twi-night double
header (my favorite events), a feat that hadn't been accomplished since
something like 1912. Wood got bombed from game one without getting out
of the first inning, so he came back to start and lose the second in a
    more conventional fashion.

I saw the greatest QB in NFL history, Joe Willie Namath, riddle the
Baltimore Colts defence in the swirling winds of Shea Stadium on a cold
    November day in the early-70s.

Saw the Red Sox lose game 3 of the 1988 ALCS to the A's. Sat next to
    the infamous Jeff Needle.

Saw the world famous Central Jersey Group 2 High School Football
championship game when I was a high school freshman., Red Bank vs.
Heightstown. Heightstown was heavily favored, a team with a handful of
players who went to big colleges and a much bigger school than my Red
Bank. They also had the best running back in the state, although his
name has escaped my mind many years ago. Red Bank ended up winning
48-44 in a real heart-stopper. One of my best friends fumbled away a
Heightstown on-side kick attempt with 2 minutes to go, but the Bucs
held on for the victory anyway.

One other one, I've got to mention for Mike Child's sake:

The Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, Calif., late February, 1990. The
Lakers beat the visiting '76ers, but in the pre-game ceremonies, Pat
Riley was awarded the Sport Magazine, Coach of the Decade Award, and
Magic Johnson was awarded the Player of the Decade award. Both banners
were hoisted into the immortal rafters. Chills ran up and down my
spine and Magic's ever-so-humble words of thanks nearly brought a tear
    to my eye.

Well, my moment to witness was not that exciting, but definitely
history making. I saw the first (and maybe the last) MLB game called
    by a female ump.

Spring Training, 1988, Kissimmee, Pirates at the Astros. Pam Prosthema
was behind the plate. Knepper was pitching and made a big stink after
the game saying that a woman's place was not on the diamond. NOW got
    after him something fierce.

Another famous one was seeing Carlton Fisk's 2,000 hit last season
at Comiskey. Great for a catcher.

A not-so-famous moment: Birmingham Barons vs. Charlotte Knights (AA) in
1988. Final score 22-2, Birmingham. The most runs ever scored in
Southern League Baseball. Best part was the scoreboard only went to
    19.

December 1985, Boston Garden, The Celtics whip the Lakers 110-95. What
made it so enjoyable was a rather large obnoxious Lakers' fan (woman mind
you) was ranting and raving throught out the first half Magic this and
Magic that, go James etc. It was a very close game until an early insertion
of the "green team" in the second half. Walton dominated and the Celts opened
up a plus 20 lead tp out the Lakers away. During the run the lady had
disappeared when she return boy did she catch a mouthful....

1984 Same place May, Celts beat the Bucks for the Eastern Division title..
I also seem to recall they kicked the Lakers butts in the finals that
 year...

March 29th 1987 same place, DR. J's farewell game in the Boston Garden,
I still get goose pimples everytime I think about it. Great player too
bad he was a Sixers... ;^)

Bob, no thanks for the memory ;^)....A friend of mine and I were running
a small booking operation back then. Everybody's calling and not believing
in the Eagles and laying heavily on Dallas. We got about 2K on Dallas and
a couple of hundred on the Eagles. I look at my buddy and tell him they're
wrong we ought hold all the action. I didn't necessarily care for the Eagles
but I figured their defense was good and the cold weather wasn't for Dallas.
I go out to do an errand and when I come back not only has my buddy layed
off the 2K he's also put 500 down for us on Dallas. ;^( He did the same
thing to me about a year later on a monday nite Pats/oilers game, blew
everything we were up on the weekend by holding on to Houston action and
betting off the Patsies. It was the end of operation but not our friendship...

personal favorite of mine pitching a three hit shutout in slow pitch softball
in a tournment. Last two outs of the game was line drive off my head that
the shortstop caught in the air and flipped to the leftcenter field who tagged
second to get the runner who had taken off. Fortunately it hit me in the head
so there was no damage...

I rarely go to college football games anymore, but I was in New
York a few years back and my sister invited me to a game at Columbia.
(I wouldn't normally have accepted, but she is the manager of the
team, so I felt a certain obligation!!!)

When I asked how the team was doing, she said that their record
was not that great but they were fun to watch!! (I think their
record was 0-45 stretching back nearly five years, or something
    similar).

Anyway, the game was against Princeton and, to set the stage, I'll
just mention that the ex-Columbia University coach had been fired
by Columbia (for calling his players "addicted losers") and had
transferred his three sons (the QB, the star running back and a
wide receiver) to Princeton so they could play on his team.

Anyway, I suppose all you Sports Noters and Trivia Hounds know that
Princeton were beaten and Columbia and their fans celebrated as
if they had won the friggin' Superbowl - goalposts came down, players
carried off the field, mayhem in the streets of upper Manhattan

    re: .25

Jim Garrett is the coach you're thinking of. Jim had been around the
NFL for a while and was somehow able to sell Columbia on his ability to
turn the team around. Two of his football playing sons had already
enrolled at Princeton and they transferred to Columbia to play for Jim.
The youngest son (who was a senior last year and was drafted by the NFL
in the 1990 draft) entered Columbia as a freshman. The boys were named
Jason, John and Judd. I'm not sure which was which, one was a QB and
the one who was drafted after last season was a RB.

In Columbia's opening game against Harvard in Garrett's first year as
head coach, he did accuse his players of playing like drug-addicted
losers. He never called them drug-addicted losers. He directed much
of his venom at the team's punter, who quit in disgust. If I have the
years right, this would have been 1985. Columbia fired Garrett after
the season. The boys all transferred back to Princeton without ever
    playing a down for Dad.

In 1988, Columbia did break its losing streak against Princeton, 16-12.
The Garrett boys were all playing for Princeton. After the 1988
season, the new Columbia coach, Larry McElreavy, was fired over an
alleged drinking incident. The youngest Garrett went on to break all
    of Princeton's rushing records.

I may be off by a year or two, but that's the way it went, more or
    less.

Seriously, now, my actual witness to a great moment in sports....

It occured last August. Giants stadium. It had two parts.

The first part was a half time, in the concourse, near the hotdog
stand. I saw JD almost follow these two girls into the women's
room trying to pick them up. It was a team pickup actually, as I
was holding our place in line. JD and I weren't feeling any pain.

The second part was the infamous IceTea incident.

An bonus was witnessing the most amazing thing I've even seen a grown
man do. Dan Schneider actually performed the Tea Pot dance (you know,
I'm a little tea pot, short and stout) in front of thousands of
people in the stands. An amazing feat....

Phil! Brought a tear to many an eye there...

    4) Kevin McHale's career high 58 points (6 days before LB's 60). And I
really didn't 'see' all of his points, either, as we were in the
rafters and had to lean way over to see the other end of the court.
And we still just saw the release, and then the swish thru the net.

    5) The last game the Celtics won! That record-breaking playoff game
against the Knicks last year. And I stayed for every last point!

    6) Doug Fluties last game in Shaefer. Actually, I don't remember ANY
of this game - quite the BBQ before the game :-)

I didn't know there was a dance step along with it.
   What are the moves?

To the line "Here is my handle", place one's left fist on one's left
    hip.

To the line "Here is my spout", place one's right arm at a 45 degree
angle straight to the side from the shoulder, with the elbow bent 90
degrees and the wrist 45 degrees, resulting in a spout-like
    conformation.

To the line "Tip me over and pour me out", bend at the waist to the
right, imitating the motion required to get liquid to come out of the
    finger's on one's right hand.

Full lyrics for those who missed pre-school or summer camp:

I'm a little teapot, short and stout.
Here is my handle, here is my spout.
When I get all steamed up, then I shout
"Just tip me over and pour me out."

*I* knew that part. I was wondering what the DANCE might be (as
in, shuffling the ole feets aroun')

   Also...

   	It's supposed to be:
Just T I P me over and pour me out. (very loud on the `tip' part)

(and the guys do: just tip PSSHHHHHTTTTT! me over and pour me out.)

Sometime if I get out that way, I'll show everybody how to do an old

1.) All-Star game July 1970 Riverfront Stadium - Riverfront had just opened up.
We saw the Rose/Fosse collision (on a Jim Hickman single to center field).
Also got to boo Richard Nixon (to my dad's (a staunch Rep.) dismay..he
    threatened to leave me there).

2.) Reds vs. Braves circa 1967 Crosley Field - Hank Aaron's 3000th hit. It was
a 37 hop nubber to the shortstop. Aaron beat it out.

3.) Browns vs. Bengals mid-80's Riverfront - Thom Darden throws about the most
vicious forearm to Pat McAnally's face that I've ever seen and just lays
him out cold. I honestly thought McAnally was dead. All of the Browns fans
I was with went berserk. Unfortunately (for this Browns fan), he came back
to catch the winning TD pass.

4.) Browns/Bengals mid-to-late 80's Riverfront - Steve Cox of the Browns kicks
a 60 yd. field goal right before half-time to tie the game up. I think it
is still the 2nd longest FG in NFL history.

Lefebrve answers in fifth(?), Eddie Matthews ends it with solo shot
in bottom of ninth, 2-1. Koufax had 16 Ks.
    4. Saw Gerald Henderson steal the ball in 84, saw all 84 playoff games
