WORDY::NAZZARO "Boston Shootout: June 22-24"         24 lines  20-JUN-1990 16:29
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you may be able to tell from my p-name, I am going to attend
all three days of the Boston Shootout this week. For those of
you not familiar with the Shootout, it is a gathering of eight
High School All-Star teams from throughout the country. THere
are four games Friday starting at 3:00 at Walter Brown Arena at
BU, four more games Saturday starting at 10:30 AM, and three
games on Sunday (as well as the slam dunk and 3-point shot finals)
    also starting at 10:30.

The Shootout is always an exciting event. Many players who played
in the Shootout have gone on to the NBA. In fact, 39 current NBA
players participated in the Shootout, including Patrick Ewing, Chris
Mullin, Tim Hardaway, Terry Cummings, Mark Aguirre, Dale Ellis,
Rolando Blackman, Bernard King, and many others - even Mark Acres!

Last year, Bill Curley led Boston to the Shootout title, beating LA in
the finals 110-109. Curley had 22 points, 15 rebounds, and 6 blocks,
including a clutch block in the final second to preserve the victory.
Tracy Murray from LA (now a starter at UCLA) was the tourney MVP.

This year's teams include Boston, New York, Washington, Atlanta, Miami,
(Are you coming up, Kathy?), Chicago, Chattanooga, and Los Angeles.

Lots of kids who don't predict the 700 in the boards wait until
the last minute to decide whether to enroll at a four year school
or go the prep route. Callahan from Bedford even made his 700
but went prep anyway. I gues that's what the kid is waiting for,
    deciding which route to take.

276.14Shootout report4159::NAZZAROBoston Shootout: June 22-24Mon Jun 25 1990 18:3274
Outstanding tournament - Atlanta proved too tough for Boston in the
finals, mostly because the home team was abysmal from the foul line
(Eric Brunson was 8-9; the rest of the team was 3-18!!!) The two
best players for Atlanta were juniors, the best player for CHicago was
a junior, and Brunson's a junior, so there's lots of talent coming back
(hopefully) next year. The Mandela thing cut into the crowds - about
2000 Friday night, 1500 Saturday, and 3500 in the Garden Sunday.

Curtis Bostic of Brockton was incredible in the slam dunk contest! He
could really soar!!! The closest thing I've seen to Michael Jordan.

    Best players:  Troy Boston of Boston (6-8; going to Providence);
Brunson, who's a 6-3 guard; James Brown from Cambridge 6-6 going to
BU; Mark Boyd from NY (6-3; West Virginia) juniors James Forrest and
Sharone Wright (tourney MVP 6-10) from Atlanta, and Juwan Howard of
Chicago (91 points in three games and consistent 30-31-30 and he's
6-10, too!); Grant Hill of DC was a bit of a disappointment as was
DC's Dickey SImpkins (6-9 going to Providence) and Boston's Omo Moses
    (6-1 guard going to Pitt).

    Results:

    Friday	- Washington 102, Chattanooga 88
(Lawrence Moten off bench with 21 for DC - Syracuse bound)
(Geoff Hermon 6-0 G Austin Peay had 42 for Chattanooga)
    		- Atlanta 123, Los Angeles 103
(Six guys in double figures for Atlanta; 6-5 Aaron Swinson
CLemson with 21 and 6-0 Marquis Hicks with 23 lead)
    		- New York 91, Chicago 86
(NY scores last 12 points off game to pull out win; Boyd
    		has 29; Howard 30 and Marlo Fenner 6-6 UTEP 22, each 12
    		rebounds for Chi)
    		- Boston 117, Miami 80
(Biggest margin of victory in Shootout history; Troy Brown
leads with 22 pts, 13 reb, 5 blocks, and 4 assists)

    Saturday	Consolation Games
    		- Miami 77, Chattanooga 63
(Amazing comeback for Miami after last night's debacle; 30
    		turnovers doom Chattanooga)
    		- Chicago 84, Los Angeles 75
(Howard 31 pts and 16 reb)
    		Semifinals
    		- Boston 107, Washington 103
(Bostic 23 pts, 11 reb; Troy Brown 21 pts, 20 reb, Brunson
24 pts lead comeback victory; Hill had 20 pts 8 reb 6 ast)
    		- Atlanta 88, New York 85 (overtime)
(Atlanta leads most of game, blows lead, has ball down 1
with 20 seconds left, misses five shots, gets fouled on 6th
makes 1 FT to send game to OT; Wright 25 pts, 13 reb and
Forrest 17 pts 9 reb before injuring eye lead Atl)
    Sunday	Fifth place game
    		- Chicago 88, Miami 74
(Howard immense again - 30 pts, 14 reb)
    		Third Place Game
    		- New York 88, Washington 70
(Grant Hill only 4 pts for DC, Simpkins only 5; Mike Boyd
with 28 and Atiim Browne with 23 lead NY; Charles Harrison
6-0 G going to Georgetown leads DC with 25; Moten has 24)
    		Championship Game
    		- Atlanta 106, Boston 100
(Boston looks lethargic most of game, mount great 4th qtr
comeback, can't get a call from refs down stretch, esp. a
    		charge on Brunson down 3 with just over a minute left;
Forrest DNP for Atl, but Wright unstoppable and Atl guards
Reggie Manuel 6-2 Jr and Marquis Hicks 6-0 Oklahoma play
    		best game of weekend - Manuel 16 pts, 7 ast, 3 reb, 3 stl;
    		Hicks 23 pts, 4 ast, 8 reb, 4 stl)

It was a really fun tournament, the quality of play was high, and Wali
Jones (Miami coach) gave a great pseech at the banquet Saturday night.

Nazz,

Tell me about Moten. What's his offensive style (ie: penetrator,
outside shooter, open-floor type, etc.). I've seen some #s on him and it
appears that he has some rebounding ability from the guard spot. They list
him at 6'4". Is that accurate ? Is he fast ? Strong ? Heady ? Outta
control ? Raw ? Well-disciplined ? A natural 2-guard ? Or a small forward ?

276.16All you ever wanted to know about Moten at the Shootout4159::NAZZAROI'll give U fish; I'll give U candyWed Jun 27 1990 12:5415
Moten is a slasher - went to the basket really well. Also liked to
shoot the 3-pointer - was 4-12 in 3 games from 3-point land. Came in
as sixth man first two games, and started at guard the third. Didn't
pass much, but what do you expect from a shooting guard!

Here are his stats for the three games:

MIN FGM FGA 3PM 3PA FTM FTA OR DR TOT AST STL TO PTS
    	25 8 13 0 3 5 6 2 4 6 1 4 0 21
    	24 5 10 2 5 2 4 2 2 4 1 1 2 14
    	27 8 16 2 4 6 9 3 3 6 0 1 2 24

    He looks like a player!
