237.0. "Official Lakers "going away party" note" by BUILD::MORGAN () Mon May 14 1990 12:04

    Shhh, be vewy quiet...

Well, to my surprise there was not a topic dedicated to the Los Angeles
Lakers in this version of SPORTS. This further clarifies what many
Boston fans have suspected for a long time. Almost all Laker fans are
    bandwagon jumpers. :-)

Now far bit for me to go stirring things up, but damn you have to
love what is happening out west. Like the Celts, this team is on the
downslide. Their best days are behind them. C-Ya!

To tell ya guys the truth, there is a Lakers conference. I haven't
been in it this year, but I was last year, and it had a good showing.
The LAKERS aren't my favorite team, but I do like them better than
a lot of teams, and I'm glad there isn't a Lakers note. Why? Because
Laker Haters outnumber Laker likers about 50-1.

You'd think the Celtwit fans would have learned from that stooopid
    note in the CELTICS conference.

It was started with the Fungus up 2-0 on NY, and the discussion
was about their next opponent in the playoffs.

    HAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!

Doc, the '70 Lakers was one of the best teams ever! They also had an
inside game that the '90 version doesn't have. Chamberline, Baylor,
and Jerry West, c'mon Doc and have a clue. Phoenix was a 2 year old
franchise back then with Hawkins their only star. I'm sure the '90
Lakers would be scared if the Heat had them down 3-1.

Yeah, things sure look grim for the purple and gold right now. But
it sure seems like every time the Lakers have lost during the past
10 years, the so-called experts have predicted that the loss meant
that their era had come to an end. I wouldn't be so quick to write
this team off for next year or the year after. Tell the truth --
how many of you ABTLers who are all set to write the epitaph on the
Lakers tombstone were making the same pronouncements after the '86
loss to Houston?

Repeat the above sentence ten times - more if necessary.

Pat Riley, as much as I can't stand his show-biz style, is an
outstanding coach who finds ways to win. Magic Johnson is a
proven winner of long standing who also finds ways to win, even
when his back is to the wall.

Now, if wither of them can wake up Jimmy Clang and Byron Scott,
the Lakers will still pull the series out.

Game 5 should be very interesting. LA, being the professionals that
they are, is expected to bounce back and have a big game. They looked
awfully downtrodden after yesterday. The whole world knows Magic will
show up, AC will probably play well too. Will the rest? Meanwhile, the
young Suns are pumped, focused, and full of confidence now.

According to the interviews, the Suns have felt they could compete with
LA along. Now they've proven it! A lot of credit has been given to
Kurt "Rambo" Rambis for keeping the youngsters focused and hungry, plus
    he knows the opponents.

Why does everytime someone confronts someone on a Laker/Celtic series
loss they reply with how many championships has your team won. Ancient
history pal, that was then, this is now. I am a true Celtic fan, but
just because the Lakers lost Im not going to throw a party. Bottom
line the Celtics and Lakers are getting old. They are starting to hit
or are at the twightlight of there careers. The lakers still are no
where near the ages of some of the Celtics. The Celtics will be
back as long as Red is not dead.

>>Bottom line the Celtics and Lakers are getting old.

Actually, the real bottom line is that alot of other teams are getting quite
good. The move toward parity has been quite strong over the past 5 years and
the results are just now being seen. Next year, any of 10 teams could
legitimately challenge for the championship given some minor adjustments in the
off season. The Lakers would be near the bottom of that list and the Celtics
probably wouldn't make it.

I've found this year in the NBA one of the most enjoyable that I can remember.
There have been some superb contests.

237.42RIPPLE::DEVLIN_JOBosco puts whee in your Knee...Tue May 22 1990 13:5716
    Jeff,

You hit it on the head. The NBA seems to be heading for a 'wild'
decade. In the 60's, it was Boston vs. LA, with a smattering of
Philly. In the 70's, it was a crap shoot, with Boston, La, the
Knicks, Washington, Golden State, Seattle, Portland all winniing
titles. In the 80's, it was back to LA vs. Boston with a smattering
of Philly early and Detriot late. Now the 90's are coming in, and
I envision a decade more in line with the 70's then the 60's or
    80's.

A lot of teams are one player away. For example, put a real scoring
treat at forward on the knicks, a shooting guard on Utah, a good
6th man on the Sixers, etc., and you have real contendahs.

Yeah from a standpoint of parity you guys are right and there have been
some spectacular contests but more enjoyable? Not for me the refs let too
much BS go on and protect the superstars to no end. I get sick sometimes
when I see a rookie make a great play on a vet only to hear the whistle
and then the commentator tell us how he has to pay his dues. The game
has become more of defensive struggle, it's too bad that the better defense
is a product of more teams playing somwe type of zone and the clutching and
 grapping that is allowed.

traveling, palming moving picks all to help the spectacular move for the
 fans' enjoyment? Not mine.........

237.44LUNER::BROOKSWelcome to Men On Art ! :-)Tue May 22 1990 20:5912
I hate to say it, but I'm starting to agree with you Mike. I think
the announcers had better develop the filberts to say "That call
stunk !" Rather than, he's a rookie, he'll the call in a year. What
makes the call any less worse in a year ?

    Example : Philly/Bulls, Game 5 ... JOrdan got a rebound, and Bob
Thornton was really on him, and stayed tight as Jordan dribbled
away from the basket. The ref called a foul. Fine, a good call.
Well, Jordan felt like a primma-donna, and threw a nasty forearm
at Thornton after the whistle. Who does the ref admonish ? Thornton.

    I wanted to gag ...
237.45BOSOX::TIMMONSI'm a Pepere!Wed May 23 1990 08:4319
Yeah, good point, Mike. I absolutely HATE to see the travelling
and palming that goes on. These are BASIC requirements of the game,
yet they are continually violated. And, the clutching and grabbing
doesn't add to the beauty of the game.

When Michael puts on his moves, it should be his moves against the
defenders moves, not some of the crap that is allowed. Same thing
underneath. It's cheating, nothing less. Because the refs allow
    it doesn't make it right.

It's always bothered me in sports, particularly at the pro level,
that rules are on the books, but not enforced enough. Either eliminate
the rules, or enforce them, period. After all, the pros are supposed
to be the players who are at the pinnacle of the talent during that
time period. What kind of lesson does this impart on kids who are
learning the game? Cheating is okay as long as you don't get caught?
While that may be acceptable in today's society, it's still wrong.

I see the following move all the time and I'm wondering if it is legal or not..

Pat Ewing does it all the time as do a lot of forwards....

example...

Ewing gets the ball at the low post....turns, ducks down low and drives his
shoulder into the defender who is standing there immobile....after bumping( his
bump would put me in the 3rd row) he goes up for the shot....

Is it Legal to initiate contact like that or is it just another unwritten rule
in the NBA ?

Metz, that's the unwritten Moses Malone rule. ;^) It's on the book it
should be called but rarely if ever is. If it was Moses, Karl Malone
Pat Ewing, Bird and about 75% of the rest of the players in the league
would need a 10 foul limit to stay in the game.....

You got that right Hawk. Except I don't call it the Moses rule.
I call it teh Larry God Bird rule ;-)

Another thing that kills me is traveling - but not the Jordan variety
on the break, but the inside traveling. For instance, in the
Sixers-Bulls series, the announcers were gushing over Ed Nealy,
but EVERYTIME he got the ball low he traveled - why? Because he
pivoted off BOTH feet. Every basket he made he pivoted right foot
first, then pivoted left foot, shuffling all the time.

From reports in the Detroit newspapers Magic Johnson is moving back
to East Lansing. He wants to establish residency and run for a
position on the Michigan State University board.

This has come under fire from a lot of people in the press that he
is not qualified. The press was wondering how he can fulfill his

Subject: Worthy arrested for soliciting sex

HOUSTON (UPI) -- Los Angeles Lakers All-Star forward and leading
scorer James Worthy was arrested Thursday on charges of solicitation of
prostitution, Houston police said.
Worthy, in Houston with the Lakers to play the Rockets, allegedly
called an escort service at about 3:45 p.m. Thursday from his hotel
room. The escort service, however, was linked to the Houston Police
Department.
Worthy posted bond and was released, but did not arrive at The Summit
in time to start against the Rockets. Sam Perkins started in place of
Worthy at forward.
Worthy arrived at The Summit early in the second quarter under police
escort. A Rockets spokeman ordered police to remove all media from the
area.
Worthy changed into his uniform and was greeted by loud cheers when
he entered the arena. He then entered the game with 9:41 left in the
first half and again was greeted by cheers.
Worthy did not leave the game after that and finished with 24 points.
He was instrumental in Los Angeles pulling out a 108-103 overtime win
over the Rockets.
``This is a tough night,'' Worthy said after the game. ``I didn't
want to run away from the situation. Other than the death of a close
friend, this is the toughest situation I've had to play in. I tried to
do the best I could. I knew I had to focus.''
Worthy would not talk about his arrest.
Los Angeles Coach Mike Dunleavy said Worthy came to the bench and
said, ``I'm ready to play, Coach.''
``I figured he was better off on the floor than on the bench,''
Dunleavy said. ``He wanted to (play) and I think that says a lot about
him.''
Worthy allegedly called the escort service requested two women, and
two female undercover officers went to the hotel where Worthy allegedly
asked them to participate in sexual acts, said police spokesman Dan
Turner.
``He has shown a lot of remorse,'' Turner said after Worthy had been
arrested.
Worthy was charged with solicitation of prostitution, a Class B
misdemeanor. If convicted, Worthy would face fines up to $1,000 and/or
six months in jail.
``James Worthy has been a model citizen with the Los Angeles Lakers
throughout his career and until I talk to him I cannot make much of a
comment,'' Dunleavy said before the game. ``Until then James Worthy has
been a class act and we will stand behind him. My main concern for is
for James Worthy and his mental state.''
At halftime, Lakers spokesman John Black said, ``We support James
Worthy 100 percent. He has represented the Lakers organization well. I
know I speak for all Lakers management.''
Worthy, who had started all five previous Lakers games this season,
was leading the team in scoring, averaging 26.6 points a game.

Subject: Worthy faces arraignment on prostitution charge

HOUSTON (UPI) -- James Worthy, the Los Angeles Lakers' All-Star
forward, is to be arraigned Tuesday on charges of soliciting sex from
two female undercover police officers.
Worthy, 29, will be arraigned before Harris County Court-at-Law Judge
Jimmy Duncan on two charges of solicitation of prostitution. If
convicted of the Class B misdemeanor, Worthy could face fines up to $1,
000 and/or six months in jail on each charge.
Worthy, the Lakers' leading scorer, was arrested Thursday afternoon
after he allegedly called an escort service from his hotel room and
requested two women. Police said phone calls to the escort service were
being monitored by the vice squad.
Two female undercover officers went to the hotel where Worthy
allegedly offered to pay both of them for sex, said police spokesman Dan
Turner.
The charges state that Worthy did ``in a public place knowingly
solicit (the undercover officers) to engage with the defendant in sexual
conduct, namely, deviant sexual intercourse, for hire.''
Turner would not elaborate on any details of the undercover operation
and had ``no idea'' how much money Worthy allegedly offered the two
officers.
Worthy, a native of Gastonia, N.C., posted $1,000 bond and was
released, but did not arrive at The Summit in time to start against the
Rockets. The club's leading scorer entered the game with 9:41 left in
the first half and played the remainder of the contest, finishing with
24 points and helping the Lakers to a 108-103 overtime victory.
``I never thought of not playing,'' Worthy said after the game. ``The
best place for me was out on the court, but it was tough. It wasn't a
pretty situation.
``This is a tough night. I didn't want to run away from the
situation. Other than the death of a close friend, this is the toughest
situation I've had to play in. I tried to do the best I could. I knew I
had to focus.''
The arrest stunned the Lakers coaches and players. Coach Mike
Dunleavy described Worthy, the father of an 8-month-old daughter and the
son of a minister, as a ``model person.''
``We do not know what happened,'' Dunleavy said. ``What we do know,
though, is that James has always been a model person and someone who has
brought great pride to the Lakers in everything he has done.
``Whatever the case is, James has been a class act and his teammates
and I will stand behind him.''
Teammate Mychal Thompson said he was ``very surprised. I hope it was
a misunderstanding.''
Worthy has been active in various causes. He taped a television
commercial urging people to abstain from driving drunk. His wife,
Angela, was one of the songwriters on the Lakers' ``Just Say No'' anti-
drug rap song, which was recorded and put on video in 1987.
During college at North Carolina, he spent his summer breaks working
with the aged and mentally retarded.
On the court, the seven-time All-Star has been instrumental in the
Lakers winning three league championships since he was the first pick in
the 1982 draft. He was the Most Valuable Player of the 1988 NBA Finals.
Dunleavy said Worthy came to the bench after arriving at The Summit
and said, ``I'm ready to play, coach.''
``I figured he was better off on the floor than on the bench,''
Dunleavy said. ``He wanted to (play) and I think that says a lot about
him.''
Worthy, who had started all five previous games this season, is
averaging 26.6 points a game.

"Legally", Worthy might be found not guilty because of entrapment,
but IMO the damage has been done. In the minds of many, no matter
if he was entrapped or not, he still called the escort service and
    offered money for sexual services.

The means by which they "caught" him might be in question, but
Worthy aint denying that he called and offered to pay.

So, although he will be found innocent because of entrapment,
he will still be seen as morally guilty by a vast amount of the
public. The damage done to one's image and credibility is awfully
hard to reverse in these situations.

From the looks of it, the LAKERS are finally adjusting to Dunleavy's
system and taking care of business. Either that or Dunleavy has
taken heed from the faithful and rid himself of that Eastern Conf.
    brute-ball mentality. :-)

I anticipate a good game from both teams, with a score similiar
to the 112-111(something like that) clash earlier in LA.

Bad news for all you Laker-haters: They're baaaaaaaaacccccckkkkkk!
Magic had another triple-double and Byron Scott poured in 32 points
on 13 for 15 shooting as the Lakers thrashed the sons in Phoenix,
108-98, Saturday night.

Unfortunately I fell asleep in the second quarter what was the final? Did
Worthy continue to abuse Rodman all night long? James's quickness allowed
him to neutralize alot of the clutching and grapping that Rodman gets away
 with.

Yes Walt, I know many many others besides Dennis clutch and grap on defense
as well. Except of course the Celtics who play it straight by the books...

The final was 114-90. Worthy finished with 23 points. Detroit
didn't look right last night. Their guards all had bad nights,
Rodman seemed invisible, and their defense never clamped down.
Magic abused Little Joe all night long in the low post.

Typical Piston goonery towards the end though. Some things you
can always count on.

I taped it for you Mike, figuring you'd fall asleep but wanted to see
the whole thing. It got ugly near the end as the Lakers opened a 30+
point lead and Laimbeer and Aguirre both required T's for standard
Piston play. I think that's three incidents in three games for the
Good (but misunderstood) Boys from Detroit.

Worthy got off on Rodman early and often, but most of the second and
third quarters it was mostly Magic posting up and making things happen.
It's been a long time since Rodman has gotten the better part of Worthy
in that matchup. I think James has successfully adjusted to the
clutch, grab and snap the neck like you got hit by a brontosaurus tail
whip that Rodman has down. They just don't play each other enough to
show it in full, but in my memory Worthy has consistently gotten the
better of the matchup since the middle of the '88 finals.

Nothing's settled yet between the two teams, and the next one should be
February in Detroit. Last year, the Lakers lost the home game in
December in OT (they should've won in regulation) and whipped the
Pistons at the Palace later on.

Rodman isn't the same since his ankle is worse than anyone is admitting
to. I turned it off during the 3rd quarter after flipping back and
forth between that, Bill & Ted on Showtime, and Whitney Houston on
Arsenio and listening to the Sox justifying picking up Matt Young.
They looked flat. Not much else to say. The Lakers outplayed them.

Walt, I agree with you I think Dennis should consider surgery even if it
means he's out for the year. It might add a few years on to the end of
his career if he takes care of it now...

Mike do really have to ask??

Okay Dano, there are 128 replies in here and only 4 (3 wasted on
supporting your loyalty, 1 on the Lakers, none for eating your crow and
congratulating Phoenix) are yours. There's a big gap in here from you
while the Lakers were being totally humiliated by me and others.

In contrast, even a wagon jumper like Doc has 7 (only 2 deal with
Phoenix, one is even a backhanded compliment, the rest are avoidance)
replies in here! You should be ashamed!

So? This isn't the only note where the Lakers are discussed nor am I
obligated to respond to every stupid note I see. My continued
commitment to the Lakers is just as self-evident as was your recent

So according to Dr. M Logic, you must be a Cleveland Browns fan. After
all, you spend 50% of your time in that topic.

The shallowness of your NBA knowledge has already been revealed.
Comments like the above only confirm it.
