235.0. "What sports do you play?" by RSST6::RIGGEN (Burley from biking) Thu May 10 1990 21:28

In some of the past revisions of this note we had a list of sports that
everyone actually plays.

I'm currently into Mountain Biking and will be in a Race this Saturday.
15 miles of dirt trails My wife is also a participant.
The Burley from Biking is because I have a Burley trailer that I put both kids
into when I ride the bike this adds more drag than I cain imagine but the
results are when there is no trailer I can cruise all day without getting tired.

I ski during the winter the steeper and bumpier the better.

I also golf in the warmer weather times avg 90 (18)

I lift, ride a bike and play softball in the summer.

I lift, play racquetball and b-ball in the winter.

I hunt and/or fish year round.

In between, I spend time with the wife ;^)

B-ball is/was/probably always be my favorite sport to watch
and participate in. I play year round, indoor and outdoor.

I plan on playing a lot more golf this summer. I like it
because one has to relax in order to get a good drive on the ball.
Great way to relieve stress. Same goes for softball.

As long as it's sunny and the temperature is warm enough, I
ride my bicycle. Great for increasing stamina, endurance, and leg
    strength.

Off and on for the last ten years I've run. Running is fun, and
is a perfect way for me to beat the stress that sometimes crops
up in life.

Right now I'm running 3.5 a day with a longer run on Saturdays. Got
a race coming up the end of June, wanna take off some weight, and
really plan on sticking with it this time. (See, I've got this
buddy who does about 8-10 a day, and this guy can eat ANYTHING
and never put on an ounce!)

I like soccer, and have played that off and on.

Hike too.

Play golf (poorly), and bowl (a lot of fun).

PS The only thing I ever lift is anywhere between 12 and 25 oz and
    it tastes great...8^)

    Let's see...

I run, run, run and run.
Sometimes I bicycle, and then I run.
I think about playing hoop or softball, and then I run.
Couple times a year I go hiking, and then go for a run.

When I get bored with these other sports, I run.

(I also change diapers, but there isn't much sporting about that.)

I lift weights year round. It helps me relieve stress. I think
I'd go nuts if I couldn't make it to the gym for an extended period.

I play competitive softball in the summer. I'm a left fielder.
They put us *young* guys in the outfield to chase down the
shots some of the monsters in competitive softball hit. When
I get too old to play outfield, I'm gonna give it up and make
    golf my primary sport.

I hunt and fish as well.

    I run year round.

I hike year round - using the trail system with only my feet - which
is how it should be (read: No mountain bikes on trails!!)

I fish - want to get into salmon fishing now that I'm in salmon
    country.

I play golf - not too well, but I hack at it.

I play hoops, football, baseball, frisbee, volleyball, anything
    to stay active.

I work out at a club, starting a nautilaus program and swimming.

I also do curls ala 'Saw...

Running is main sport,I enter about 15 races a year. In the winter,I
lift 4 times a week,in the summer I reduce that to two.

I try to play other team games when possible, but running and lifting
are the best because you don't have to depend on anyone else.

I swam competitively for 8 years, 4-year varsity letterman for Ohio

I still go to the YMCA and swim a mile or two every other day. Nothing
like the 25,000 yard practices we used to pull in college. Gawd.

I also play softball in the spring/summer and volleyball in the fall.

And an occasional sports video game when there's a quarter burning a
hole in my pocket in an arcade. Is Wack-A-Mole a sport? (no funny

Yeah, Detroit ain' no place for wimps...

On the night before Halloween, they light the place on fire. I can't
figure out if it's to burn out old growth (like with your lawn) or
to try and give the aliens a beacon on their way to Cleveland.

The rest of the time the place is not for wimps either. You've
heard the American Express commercial "Don't leave home without it"?
Well, in Detroit they have special ones that say "Don't leave home".

I think it is to encourage new growth, Frank. God knows, they could

    Vhat I like to do:

Windsurfing (can't get enough of it, now I'm too damned far from
    warm water)

Bowling (when I'm good, I'm really good. When I'm bad, I'm embarassed)

Archery (nothing like putting a few feet of shaft into something.
Now I know how you guys feel. ;>>>>>>> )

    ::ahem::

Bicycling (nothing major, it's more fun that running)

Swimming (nothing major, but it's damned relaxing)

Car racing (okie, I'm not into it, but dammit, I wanna be. We have
an old camaro that might make it to Enduro. I wanna drive, can't
be any harder than the highway. How DOES one get started in this

   PS

   	Sports I engage in.

Usually hoops. This is the first winter I didn't play in an organized
league (recuping from tendinitis... okay now)

Footaball (but it's taking longer and longer to heal up)

   Skiing (downhill)

Baseball (pickup.. not league... cause I still coach Little League, and
the little bleeps take up most of my time).

Golf (play in the DEC league. Just started two years ago, this'll be my
third... and still striving towards mediocrity).

   Sex (recreational league only).

Shooting (target, silhouette.... thinking of starting to do my own
   reloading).

Hunting (not avid. I like to go get antelope for sausage, but most
other hunting, I just like wandering around in the woods. In fact,
you're liable to find me in the middle of a bunch of bushes reading a
book, and looking around every once in awhile to see if any elk would
   like to be killed).

Drinking (recreational only, the full contact competition league was
disbanded, and several people got their peepees whacked).

I will also play volley ball, horse shoes, or anything else you can
think of.... as long as it's competition.

Kim, you're fitting right in. Junk Noting is cool, or as George
Michael might say it's natural and free....

All of us Junk Noters have taken the first step: we've admitted that
we have a problem. I even spent time at the /Don Work Out Your
Addiction Farm to try and get cured. But, like I said, we've taken
the first step, admitting we've got the problem, and we keep right
on doing it.

Some of us have been doing it so long that we're now members of Hawk's
Club, the Freakin' Lunatics. I believe I inspired the club, due to
my (abnormal?) behavior at the Patriots Day Red Sox game, but that's
another story....

My main sport has become rugby since I started playing it in college in
1980. I am currently the first-side tight head prop for Austin RFC. I
run, walk, bike, and lift to keep in shape for rugby.

Slow pitch softball (pitcher). Played in the NRO league when I was
there, now play in the Texas Instruments Co-Rec league for MCC.

I did play basketball in the DEC Maynard league while I was in NRO.
Since coming down here I get into an occasional 3-on-3 pick up game.

I play golf whenever there is a best ball tournament with plenty of
friends and beer. I do get out a few other times of the year when I
haven't got much else to do. Rugby and softball (especially rugby)
take up alot of my time. Adding golf would probably help me to get
divorced. Although my wife does like miniature golf (they call it
"Putt-Putt" here). I also can't bring myself to get real interested in
a sport one has to play early on a Sunday morning.

Since I moved to Texas my cross country skiing has suffered. Although
with the way the snowfall was for the couple of years before I moved I
wasn't skiing much up there either.

Had a crazy dream the other night:

I was a goalie for some hockey team. That's the first crazy part
'cause I never played hockey in my life.

The second crazy part was that Dan Marino was my center and Ian
Astburry (lead singer for the rock group The Cult) was one of my
defensemen--boy was he mean; I think he was checking some of our own
    players.

Third crazy part was that I passed the puck from my goal to Marino who
scored and I was credited with an assist.

I can explain this dream in one of three ways:

    	- I have a secret desire to be a hockey player
    	- I should not eat a whole pizza before I go to bed

Hey man, now I know who swiped my 'shrooms. What a totally egregious
thing to do, dan'l-dude!

I mean, here I was wantin' to do some shrooms before the big JoJ
festivities, and I was out...but wait, I'd just bought some the day
before and I think I've remembered that I hadn't used them right dudes?

So anyway, I says to myself that maybe Adolf or Jimi had gotten into
them, but then I realized that they were just being dead this week so
that they couldn't have gotten into my shrooms, so then I realized that
some dude had pulled like the heinous crime of the decade by like
swiping my shrooms, ya know, and dude, I'm like really bummed out.

Like you know, dude, you should be excellent to each other dude, and
like, that means never having to take another guy's shrooms. Steve
McQueen told me that two weeks ago when he was over for dinner with
Janis Joplin and Ronnie Van Zant and anyway, Steve said that Ali
always told him that like being excellent to each other meant never
taking another guy's shrooms, so like that was a pretty heinous thing
to do.

But anyway, I'll let it go this time....

Well I found a new Mountain Bike Race.

July 28th there will be a Colorado State Games race up Pikes Peak. The Race
will start at the old ski area and climb the Pikes Peak Highway to the Summit.
The race is 8 miles and about 4100 ft elevation climb.

    Hello Everyone,

I play as much sport as my body lets me! Two or three evenings a week
I play Action Cricket (Indoor) which originated from Australia, the
weekend I play Indoor Softball and Indoor Netball (or Action Netball
as it is referred to) and Ten Pin Bowling. Most of this is played in
Kent where I come from, (Strood). I also like to play Badminton when
I'm not playing the above and when I have any spare time!!

I'd also like to find out if there are any other Indoor Cricket centres
around the world and their whereabouts.

Well, it says what sports do you play, and I'm playing a brand new
sport (for me anyway)....

Mac finally got to me 8^) Earlier this week I went to my very first
rugby practice, with the intentions of learning the game, getting
into shape, and seeing if this rugby stuff is as good as everyone
raves it is....

It is.

I dare not call myself a rugby player yet, but I never been involved
in any sport where so many of the other players are so eager to help
an old, outta shape guy learn the skills necessary to play, and
give a lot of moral support also.

If any of you out there have ever thought of playing rugby, definitely
give it a try -- you won't regret it!

Tracey,

I can imagine that. I fully expect to get the living ____ beat out
of me at one time or another. But we got talking about injuries last
night, and most of the guys said that you get bumps, scrapes, cuts
and bruises, but that knee injuries have been rare as have other
serious injuries...

I'll know soon, I suppose 8^) But this team is very serious on
physical conditioning, so I think that'll help.

And of course I'd always defer to Mac's greater knowledge and experience
to talk about that. (In fact, at this point, Mac could change his
p-name to "Frank don't know Rubgy" and it would be pretty close to the
troof... But in time.......)

Studies have shown that rugby is no more injury prone than American
football, and in some cases is less.

Tracey, maybe you just weren't put into a proper position. I've played
with guys who I would consider small, but they could play and bounce
right up after a tackle. Rachael Berman who contributes to the
conference occasionally plays for one of the best women's rugby teams
in the U.S. You might want to talk to her (if I remeber right her Node
is GRAMPS, but check the rugby topic in here to be sure).

If I didn't row in school, I'd definitely try out rugby. It looks like a
ton of fun and like a real hard contact game. Just out of curiousity, how
do you find out how to meet up with adult league teams?
One thing I can't understand about rugby though: some friends of
mine have picked it up and supposedly they are pretty good. They were
a little wimpy in a lot of ways. They were really good all
around athletes, but I can't see them taking a good hit. What gives?
I guess it's a lot like football in that it requires a lot of things to
do well--speed, strength, agility,toughness--but not necessarily all of
    them.

Tom (and anyone else), feel free to send me mail telling me the area
you live in and I will be more than happy to let you know what rugby
clubs are in that area and will try to tell you something about them if
I can. I have a copy of the National Directory of U.S. rugby clubs.

I think this highlights the critical difference between Rugby and
American Football. In football, there is a premium placed on strength
and the ability to give or take a 'good hit'. By contrast, in rugby,
there is an art in tackling someone. Brute force does not always stop
a player from running with the ball whereas a carefully timed and
executed tackle will stop someone dead in their tracks.

Would that a lot of American Football coaches drummed this into
their players. Some of the best tacklers in the NFL, particularly
on the special teams, are neither the biggest nor the strongest
players on the roster, but they get the job done through the "art"
    of tackling.

Well, where can I begin, let's say spring/summer:

    		baseball: 2 times a week,
    		tennis : 5 times a week
ball hockey(big in Canada): twice a week
(some days I play 2 sports)

    		in the fall/winter:

    		basketball: 3 to 4 times a week.
ice hockey: 2 to 4 times a week
    		indoor tennis: once a month
    		squash: : once/2 weeks
    		ball hockey : once every 3 weeks(in a gym)

Oops I forgot I also started playing "ultimate"(frisbee sport)
once a week in the summer
And, of course I golf 20-30 times a year
Oops, touch football is also once a week, spring/summer.

If any conflicts, I go to one which is most important.

Speaking of `Married with Children':

Did you see the one where all the women start digging on Al?
He really starts groovin'
Then he starts wondering.
He says to Kelly:

Al:	`When you're as good looking as we are, is it wrong to flaunt it?'

Kelly:	`WRONG!?!?! Daddy, it's like an obligation! Like... like.... a
duty or something. Like... you know... being won in a knife
         fight!'

Also:

	Lasted night. `In Living Color'

	A couple of them were:
