216.0. "CUBS WIN!! CUBS WIN!!!" by QUASER::JOHNSTON (WonFarfugIsKnotEnuf! WhoIsTooBlam?!) Thu Apr 19 1990 16:05

    	Alright!

The SEASON is upon us.... and the Cubbies have started it in fine
shape. The first game I saw (the other night), Cubs beat Mets in 13
innings... 8 - 6 (It was a pretty sloppy game).

Please confine your comments to discussion of the Chicago Cubs... or
anything else you feel like talking about.

When was the last time the Cubs won anything, huh?

They won the NL East last year.

Chainsaw -

You know my obligatory response to this.......

The world ends on the day the Cubs and the Red Sox meet in the Series.
Probably at the bottom of the 7th, with the score tied 7 to 7...

As a long-time Cubs fan, all I can say is "they ain't won nuffin'
in MY lifetime". Somehow, in my heart of hearts, I don't *expect*
them to win nuffin' in my lifetime, neither. :-)

But it was fun watching 'em beat the Mets last night....

Actually, I like the Cubs.

But I felt compelled to put in that Obligatory Note.

One of my favorite anecdotes concerns the Cubs Manager Don Zimmer.

When the Gerbil was in Texas, one of the young sportswriters (fergit
his name but he writes for SI, which is where i read this) was grousing
one day about having to cover a losing team.

The Gerbil looks him in the eye and says "Hey Kid. I'm old, I'm
fat, and I'm ugly, and I got a plate in my head. What are you worried
about?"

too funny.

'Saw

PS A&W, did Mad Dog calm down after the game, or did he still have
    that look in his eyes?

After escorted the fair damsel A&W safely to the MBTA, I took a
long walk along the Charles River out to Harvard Square to calm
down and go book shopping prior to heading home. I don't know if
the look in my eyes was gone, but I was certainly mellowed out.

Oh and 'Saw, check out reply .100 in the high school sports note.
The Ninjas haven't completely taken me over yet.

The last should read "After I escorted ...", sorry.

Yes, John. I read reply .100 and was shocked. I must be losing
my touch.

We'll have to convene a special meeting of the Apostrophe Police
sometimes, and imbibe some more beer, so that we can complete
the Indoctrination 8^)

And while Monday was not the greatest day for running the Marathon,
I'll bet it was a GREAT day for a walk....

Guess we'll have to start calling you John "Somewhat_Annoyed Dog" Hendry!

latered,

By the end of the game, while still having 'that look' in his eye
if confronted with a beachball, he also was able to put on his studlier
    look.......

   John Somewhat_Annoyed Hendry!?!?!?? - I'm Rolllllwad!

This might bear some thinkin' on.

If John Hendry N.I.T. (Ninja In Training) is going to fall in and out
of his new personna like my granny's teef on a bumpy road, it might be
a good idea for him to adopt some sort of code to warn the rest of us.

Maybe he could sign `Jeckyll Hendry' when he's using his mild mannered
   statistician's cover.....

and `Hyde Hendry' when the `curse' is upon him, and he's in a mood
to wreak havoc [Cry havoc! And let loose the dogs of war!] and rape and
pillage (or at least fool around a bit and maybe do a little plagiarizing).

   What say ye Noters?

I had the hot channel selecter last night. No, that's not perverted.
    Let me explain:

I was flicking through the several sports competitions that were on
last night (and also watching a movie or two; damn, once again I need
one of those Smothers Brothers TVs). Anyway, whenever I came to a
baseball game, someone hit a homer on the first pitch I saw.

    Flick...flick...flick...Dawson hits #10...flick...flick...Canseco
    crushes one...flick...flick...flick...Dawson sends out #11...
flick...flick...flick...Terry Kennedy launches a grand slam.

You Cinci fans are lucky the game wasn't on national TV. I bet I could
have helped the Pirates too the way things were going.

Can anybody explain what happened to the Cubs? They got some real good
people on that club. It really surprise me to see them fighting for the
cellar. In a way I'm glad they are where they are. I'm a Mets fan and
we already have our hands full with those Pirates.--:*)

    > Can anybody explain what happened to the Cubs?

Single biggest thing is injuries -- Sutcliffe out for the year,
Berryhill yet to return, plus Walton and Mitch Williams having DL
stints. Also, a few players who performed real well last year have
come back to earth (Bielecki, Dwight Smith, McClendon).

    Injuries.

And pitching. When the Cubs score 7, they allow 8 - though Maddux
looks as though he may have finally turned it around (26 1/3
consecutive innings w/out allowing a run).

After a recent 8-game winning streak, they've gone 6-4 in their
last 10. Eight games below .500 still.

216.16not a very good team this yearPOBOX::ALVESGo *White* SoxThu Aug 02 1990 12:2822

Injuries, about the worst pitching in baseball, and guys coming back
    to earth from last year.

Maddux and Bielecki have been awful, although Maddux has turned it
around and won four straight. Bielecki (18 wins last year) is in
the bullpen now. Sutcliffe had surgery and has been out all year.
The set up guys, Assenmacher and ?, haven't done a good job. Mitch
Williams was hot and cold before he went on the DL for knee surgery.

On the field, Walton hasn't hit very well, and neither has Grace. They
still don't have a third baseman, and the bench is virtually
non-existent. Berryhill hasn't played yet this year (although he's
about ready now), but Joe Giraldi has done a good job behind the plate.
Dawson and Sanberg have had excellent years, but they can't carry the
    offense by themselves.

Even if every gets healthy next year, I wouldn't necessary expect them
to be back near the top of the division again.

216.17It's obvious.....COGITO::HILLThu Aug 02 1990 15:203
Injuries, maybe, but the REAL reason has to be that they are managed by
a Gerbil, Stan Papi who sprinkles marijuana on his buckwheat pancakes
    every morning.....
