on rt. 16 in Wellesley or rt. 30 in Newton is good.

Actually, I found out from a friend who's a runner, the "secret"
to running the Boston Marathon (if you're a guy) is to train to
run EXACTLY 13 miles.

After 13 miles, naturally, you will collapse. But, the neat part is
that you are collapsing in the middle of Wellesley College, with
all those wonderful coeds to nurse you back to health.....

Best of luck everybody, looking forward to seeing some success stories
in here next week....unfortunately, I won't be there this year to see
    it live and in person.

One of my favorite things to do while watching the Marathon is to bring
the complete entry list from Sunday's Boston Globe with me to the race,
check the number of an approaching runner against the list, then cheer
    him/her by his/her first name....about 2/3rds of the runners get a big
kick out of it, the other 1/3 look at me like "Who the #$$# are you?".

(BTW, Rosa Mota officially entered yesterday.)

    Mark,

    Brutal, Juice - but funny.

    RE Paul,

Last year, I had a friend taking Japanese, so we learned a couple
of Japanese phrases - there was a large Japanese contingent and
whenever one came, we'd start chanting in Japanese - one guy almost
came to a complete stop with a look of disbelief on his face.

A few year's before that, a lot of Swedish runners were coming over,
so we learned a few Swedish phrases - again, it was a real kick.

I grew up off rt 16 near the Newton-Wellesley border and can vouch
for that as being a good place to take pictures. Across from the
Pillar House Restaurant is a set of yellow apartment buildings on a
little hill. You can get some really good pictures from there.
It is the part of 16 that is just before the overpass above rt 128.
There's always a lively crowd in the area because Wellesley is a 'dry'
town and the liquor store that services most of Wellesley is right
    there.

    re - Dinz,

It's true. And if you are really tired they might take you back
to lake Waban for a refresher.... I can see you right now after
getting pinched by a Wellsley co-ed

Jeff --

If you were still wearing that beach ball on your haid, then he
probably saw you first, and hid behind someone so no one would think
he knew you ;^)

Either that or he found Diedre and decided there were more important
things than running.....8^0

First of the DEC contingent reporting here!

Yesterday proved to be a great day for WATCHING, but too hot and
dry for running. I made it through the first half in 1:24, which was
where I hoped to be, but shortly thereafter entered the world of pain. My
goal of 2:50 went bye-bye, and I hung on for 2:58.

I saw JD in the first mile, but not after that. I haven't spoken to
him today, but a friend of mine who ran with him says they both spent
some time walking on heartbreak hill. My friend ran a 3:35, and JD was
probably a little ahead of him.

I saw a couple of DEC guys, Tim Blouin and Roger Nasatka who were both
in the 2:40s. That was the best DECie times I heard of.

Don't be modest, 'saw. We saw you complete the triathlon yesterday. You
probably ran 30 miles back and forth from the seat to the beer line, swam
around 100 laps in the mens' room, and batted at least 100 beach balls.

    Bob,

Glad to hear you broke 3 hours. I withered big time in the heat.
By Mile 19 I was cooked, and just trying to hang on for the last
7.2 miles. Walked a few of the hills, getting water and oranges
from anyone I could, and taking it easy. Started to overheat so
I tried to avoid any permanent damage. Finished in 3:27:24, my
worst time by over 31 minutes, and the first time not breaking 3
    hours.

I know of a few other Dec runners who came in around the same time

For sure Dinz.

I got a buddy here in BMF that ran NY for the first time about 3 years
ago. The day after the race, he had to walk around every 20 minutes
to keep from cramping up.
The next year, and last year, he knew how to train better (from the
experience) and found post race discomfort much less...

Sheeyit, if the Sox are gonna play nexted year, like they did Monday,
I'll go to the park only long enough to defend my Olympic medals
