204.0. "UPI newsfeed is available" by VAXWRK::NEEDLE () Mon Apr 02 1990 16:15

For those of you who miss AP news, UPI is being fed to Digital again through
the Usenet. The relevant groups are CA.*.*, with the ones of interest to this
audience being CA.SPORTS.*.

Those with workstations can access usenet with XRN (see the notes file
UFP::XRN) and those with character cell terminals can use VNEWS (see the notes
file UPSAR::NEWS-BACKBONE).

A new copy of DXRN and MXRN are available.
It's basically XRN 6.8 with several bugfixes.
For the unknowing, DXRN is an XUI port of XRN, MXRN is a Motif port.

UFP::SYS$KITS:[XRN]XRN.TARZ for Ultrix,
UFP::SYS$KITS:[XRN]DXRN.EXE or MXRN.EXE for VMS.

VMS folks probably also want DXRN.DOC (newly updated) and DXRN.COM.

For VNEWS users the latest version is V2.3 abnd is available from
CLOVAX::DISK$USER1:[COBURN.VNEWS_DIST]

Copy the file GET-VNEWS.COM and execute it on your system and it will copy the
distribution to you.

This version can handle groupnames that are longer than 32 characters. Some of
the new clari. groups (at least 1) has a name that is longer. The problem shows
up as being prompted everytime you run VNEWS to see if you want to subscribe to
this group. Then a truncated version of the name gets written to the newsrc
file and the next time VNEWS is run it happens again.

After upgrading you may wish to edit the newsrc file and remove redundant
groupnames.

I get it from SHLUMP but that's way out here in Marlboro. You might want to
check out a new node called USENET. There was a note in DEC.NEWS.SOFTWARE (I
think that's what it's called) with a contact to get added. SHLUMP is
unrestricted so you can give it a shot.

    other CA.* stuff.

    The server in Colorado Springs doesn't have UPI.

to reprint posted articles. If you do so, it's at your own risk. As I hear

    I thought from what I read it is free for distribution within the
    company or organization licensed (hence within DEC) but not outside, so
    I think as long as we make sure we keep it inside of DEC it should be
    ok.

    But then again information is information I do not see how they can
    effectively enforce any rules like that anyway.

Well, it's not "they". It's "me". If it's illegal, then I can't allow it in
any notes file that I moderate. Here's the posting that got me wondering.
I'll keep in touch with Brian on this one.

It is legal to mail clari.* articles to anyone; it is probably not legal
to copy them to notesfiles. I'll check into it.

    Of course, it is you :) But I recall reading in dec.general before
    that it is only illegal to send it external to the subscribing
    organization.

    Still, I maintain that the clarinet company really cannot enforce
    anything like that, considering all that is going on for free out in
    usenet.

Not to be anarchistic or anything, but what's to prevent someone
from mailing the damn thing to themselves, stripping off the
header, and then posting it in notes.

It would be called "laundering information" as opposed to laundering
money...

Well, 'sAW, what would prevent you is the wrath of the moderator, since I'd
recognize the articles. But it's a moot point. I just got mail from Brian
Reid indicating that it is OK. When I get his permission, I'll repost his

There was a question here last week about "what can we do with clari.*
articles?"

I have gotten the official word on what people are and are not allowed to do
with copyrighted clari.* articles.

The principle boils down to this: systematic, mechanized forwarding is
forbidden, but occasional manual forwarding is permitted.

Specifically:
 * It is ok to send any clari.* article to anyplace inside Digital, via
   any communications medium, without specific permission, as long as
   the transmission is initiated by a person and not by a mechanism.
   This includes posting an article to a NOTES file.

 * It is NOT OK to arrange for the systematic transmission of any subset
   of the articles to anyplace outside the company. For example, if your
   mother has an electronic mailbox and is interested in begonias, you
   are permitted to forward her any article that you want on that topic,
   but you are not permitted to set up a program that scans for the
   keyword "begonias" and sends every article it finds.

 * It is NOT OK to arrange for the systematic transmission of any
   any clari.* newsgroup to an archival store. For example, it is not
   OK to cause all of clari.news.sex to be transmitted to a NOTES
   file that is about sex. If you do your own mechanized classification
   of articles (e.g. if you find all articles about sex with farm tractors)
   then you are permitted to arrange for that mechanized transmission.

I don't completely understand the last rule, but the first two make sense.
It is possible to get specific permission from the ClariNet company to
violate any of these rules; please contact me for details.
