170.0. "WAC Tournament" by CX3COM::J_COTANCH (Hurricanes: 1989 National Champs) Mon Mar 05 1990 16:38

This year's WAC Tournament starts on Wednesday and is being played
on UTEP's home court. With the exception of San Diego St. and Air
Force, any of the other 7 teams appears to have a legitimate shot
    at winning this year's tournament.

Here is the WAC tournament schedule (all times are mountain!):

Wednesday: San Diego State vs. Air Force, 7:05 pm

Thursday: Hawaii vs. Wyoming, 12:05 pm
              BYU vs. Utah, 2:35 pm
UTEP vs. New Mexico, 7:05 pm
Colorado State vs. SDSU-AF winner, 9:35 pm

Friday: Semifinals, 7:05 pm and 9:35 pm

Saturday: Championship game, 6:05 pm (ESPN)

    GO LOBOS!
170.22, Maybe 3 WAC teams in TourneyCX3COM::J_COTANCHHurricanes: 1989 National ChampsWed Mar 07 1990 13:4529

The WAC figures to get only 2, possibly 3, teams into the tourney.
If CSU or BYU wins the conference tournament, they will probably
take CSU and BYU. Those 2 teams tied for the regular season title,
but CSU got the #1 seed. If someone other than CSU or BYU wins
the conference tourney, I think they will take BYU, CSU, and the
tournament champ, who gets the automatic bid.

Here are the final regular season standings in the WAC:

                       WAC ALL
    Colorado St. 11-5 21-7
    Brigham Young 11-5 21-7
    Hawaii 10-6 21-8
    Texas-El Paso 10-6 18-10
    New Mexico 9-7 17-11
    Wyoming 7-9 15-13
    Utah 7-9 15-13
    San Diego St. 4-12 13-17
    Air Force 3-13 10-19

The Lobos have won their last 7 games, including a 61-56 win at
    El Paso last Saturday night.

I tend to think CSU, BYU, and Hawaii are all in, with a possible
fourth team if someone else wins it.

IMO, if Hawaii doesn't win the WAC, they will be ignored by the
committee just like New Mexico has been the last 2 years.

First round: Air Force 70, SDSU 64 (OT)

    Quarterfinals: Hawaii 66, Wyoming 63
                   Utah 62, BYU 61 (OT)
                   UTEP 78, New Mexico 61
                   Air Force 58, CSU 51

Today's games: Utah vs. Hawaii, 7:05 pm
Air Force vs. UTEP, 9:35 pm

Both the #1 and #2 seeds were upset last night. Air Force, who
finished dead last in the WAC, shocked top-seeded CSU, while Utah
knocked off #2 seed BYU. Air Force managed to hold on against CSU,
despite shooting just 31.5% in the 2nd half. In Wyoming's loss
to Hawaii, the Cowboys blew an 11-point lead with 13 minutes left
in the game. UTEP appears to have the inside track to the conference
title, but after yesterday's upsets nothing is certain.

CSU and BYU are definitely on the bubble now, and I think only one
of the 2 will get a bid for the NCAA Tournament. Which one of them
    will go is anybody's guess.

170.6WAC in the NITFTMUDG::DUGGANWed Mar 21 1990 10:4713
Still two WAC teams in the NIT ... New Mexico beat Oklahoma State 90-88
and Hawaii beat Long Beach State by four (didn't get the score)...

The UNM-OSU game was a barnburner with the lead changing hands ten
times in the second half... Luc Longley grabbed what may have been his
first ofensive rebound of the year with :01 left and then blocked a
shot at the buzzer for the win.

It is certain that there will only be one WAC team in the semifinals
because Hawaii plays at UNM Friday night...

When it's all ya got, you go for it.

We all know WHY UNM has been in the NIT for seven years in a row, even
when they had 24-10 and 26-8 records, don't we? Can you say "politics"
I knew you could... Can you say "Lobogate"? I knew you could. Can you
say "NCAA retribution"? I knew you could.

Nice to see a WAC team in NY nexted week, though. And we'll also
get an Atlantic-10 team, as Rutgers plays Penn State tonight.

Don't know what the other two quarterfinal matchups are, though.

If Penn State wins wouldn't that be a nice induction into the Big Ten
just so that the other guys won't just write them off?
