166.0. "Digital Women's Basketball League" by DELNI::D_ANDERSON (International Eng. Development) Wed Feb 28 1990 15:56

The 2nd Annual All Star Game for Charity - April 19th - Nashoba
Valley Regional High, Bolton, (Rte. 117) Mass.

The Digital 3 point contest is once again going to be featured during
the half-time. The 1989 DEC men's 3-point champ, Wess Cathcart.....will be
there to defend his title. Dr Midnight and Iceman also intend to renew their
rivalry (maybe even a little one-on-one could be sponsored)! Carleen Miller,
the women's champ is sideline with a serious knee injury and will not be able
to defend her title.

This year Steve Nazzaro will be MC for the contest, as well as a contestant!

All those interested in backing up their claims of superior hoop skills are
welcome to enter. This year there will be a 5.00 entry fee. It goes to charity
and prevents a lot of no-shows....:-) Last year we raised $6200.00

Contact Vicky Triolo at Tarkin::Triolo to register. The contest is limited to
the first 30 men and 30 women who respond.

BTW: Dr Midnight will be one of the ref's for the game! We know what kind of
game he talks, Lets see what kind of game he refs......:-), :-)

So far we have :

  Paul Gronowski (Iceman)
  Dave Horan
  Wess Cathcart- Defending 3-point champ
  Steve McCaulay
  Dana Lane
  Walt Ashe

I will smoke him, so I will accept the challange and play him
before the 3-pt contest. Many people will be in attendance so
it will be that much more fun when I embarrass him.

    [ ] I will not play the iceMAN in a one-on-one hoop game. I'll
come up with some lame excuse sooner or later, but for now,
let me just say that I'm afraid of getting embarrassed in

Doc, pay the man ahead of time and save yourself the embarrassment.
If you bet $1 with everyone that you played 1-0n-1 against last year
at our softball end of the year party , well, I believe you ended

me about how he's going to trounce me... problem is, he never seems
to be available... well... he'll be at the 3 pt contest so its the
perfect time... problem is, Doc is backing down... AGAIN!

How is the 3 pt competition doing? Last time I tried that kind
of contest I got 17 points, and that was many years ago, before
I learned the fine art of shooting. Let me guess and say that 21
was the victors total. I'll try to add some spice to the contest,
but driving over 2 hours each was doesn't really appeal to me.

The following are excerpts from Rosie's newsletters.

Rosie's Place is a community seeking to empower, enable and enhance the lives
of poor and homeless women. Recognizing that for many women, providing for
their children is also a basic need, Rosie's Place extends services to women
with children where possible. It is not funded by city, state or federal
government. Through contributions from folks like us they "continue to be
there for those who have no one there for them" for the last 16 years, the
first women's shelter in the COUNTRY!

Homelessness can be taken lightly only by those who have never carried all they
possess - often castoffs salvaged from other people's trash - in paper bags.
For those consigned by mental illness or poverty to sleep on the streets
regardless of the weather, homelessness is a bitter reality. Their needs are
not only not being addressed, They are being denied. Who are they:

1)Poor women who simply cannot find an affordable place to live
2)De-institutionalized women released from mental health systems
with little more than Rosie's address in their pocket.
3)Women and children who are now homeless
            4)More and more elderly homeless
5)Minority women who are homeless, drug addicted and/or have AIDS

For years Rosie's has been providing meals, overnight shelter and clothing to
homeless women and children. Rosie's has begun a process by which women who
want something more than a bed in a shelter can have access to house or
apartment locations, jobs, education, medical care, psychiatric care or
whatever they want for 30 to 60 days or more, if necessary. It is their feeling
that if they can help 100 or 200 or 300 women out of the poverty cycle, it is
better than being part of a shelter system that merely beds and feeds them!!!!!
Rosie's is going to concentrate on getting women off of the streets permanently
and settled into a life THEY, the women, want.

*** WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP WOMEN HELP THEMSELVES ***

Clothing donations:
   - We will have boxes available at the game for clothes both women and
children (babies as well) and toys are greatly appreciated.
   - We can pick them up at your facility the day before the game, April 15th.

Money contributions:
   - All money from DEC employees is matched by DEC matching funds program.
We take care of it for you! Your $15.00 = $30.00 to Rosie's.
   - You can write a check payable to Rosie's Place. Include badge number so
     we can match funds.
   - You can sponsor a shooter in one of our contests, so much per basket.
   - You can come to the game, buy raffle tickets for a weekend package in
New Hampshire, dinner certificates, haircuts, as well as enjoy
refreshments. Prizes have been donated, all contributions go to Rosie's.

Time contributions:
   - Come to the game and cheer us on, moral support is always welcomed.
   - Most importantly, volunteer at Rosie's. There will be a representative
from Rosie's at the game as well as their director. They need in-service
training or tutoring (share your special skills or interest), and
volunteers to drive and help women move their belongings into apartment
buildings, as well as prepare and serve lunch and dinner. The need is for
     both men and women volunteers!!

Thank You for your support!

the 495 junction. If coming from the North (Littleton/Nashua) on 495 you
would take a left off the Rte 117 exit, from the south (Hudson/Marlboro)

    Dr M - points in first round - 3
airballs in first round - 5

    Nuff said about HIM!

Iceman made the finals, as did Dana Lane, George Thissell, and
surprise first round leader Jeff Farley. Thissell's rainbows
were on target in the finals and he strolled to an easy victory.

A great time was had by all, and I would guess over $20,000 was
earned in pledges to Rosie's Place.

I must say, George's shots were a joy to watch. Talk about a high
arcing shot. I was talking to him after and he said he could shoot,
turn and pick up the next ball, turn back and watch the shot go in. You
know the ball was up there.

Congrats to George! Also, congrats to all who competed and helped
    raise some money.

As for me, hey, I stunk. Period, end of sentence. I was hitting
from friggin out of bounds, parking lot, ect in practice - then
    I catch something from Nazz ... and it's curtains .... :-)

People are forgetting the all-star game, it was well-played, but
damn, those uniforms were HARD on the eyes ! ;-)

Silly Nazz..he doesn't even say how "well" he did...about as
good as Dr. Midnight! Acutally, Nazz managed to get 5 points in
the shootout. I'm not one to talk, cause I only managed 7.

I felt good about my chances until I saw Nazz..that face could
could destroy a 1000 ships!! Made my stomach sick...:-)

As for the 1 on 1 duel between Ice and Doc, Ice won by a score
of 15-10. I had the pleasure of officiating this little duel and
I kept it pretty clean. I'll tell you one thing though, Doc does
tend to cry when he fouls. Kinda reminded me of Tragic, oops, I mean
    Magic.

In general, it was a fun night and I'm glad I got to meet the
bodies behind some of these p-names. I'm also glad that we actually
did something worth while that will help others. Thanks to everyone
who came out and thanks to the sponsors!

Doc, I do agree, only a WOMAN could love those colors!! I guess
that's why Nazz comented to me that he wanted one of those jerseys
    because he liked the colors!!

    zero fouls.
