122.0. "The official James Worthy LDUC note" by VAXWRK::NEEDLE (Money talks. Mine says "Good-Bye.") Mon Jan 22 1990 19:07

Doug and Dan, use this note for the James Worthy pissing contest. It continues
to dominate the NBA note so it deserves its own note (one we can all NEXT
UNSEEN over).

James Worthy is an All-star NBA player who will one day end up in the
Hall of Fame. He is an above average talent playing for a great team.
He has developed a passable outside shot to go along with his superior
postup and fast break offense. He always hustles on defense. He can
go to the offensive boards well.

I meant everything I said. My criticism of James Worthy is on
specific points of his game that tend to catch my eye.

He hustles all the time on defense, but that doesn't make him a
great defender. I still think he leaves his feet too much and can
be faked out. He is lucky to have a great team defense behind
him and great athletic skills to cover for the mistakes.

He does not rebound well off the defensive board. He is not your
classic "box out" rebounder. He's a leaper. The fact that the Lakers
have a number of other rebounders and a fast break offense has eliminated
the need for him to even try to display that skill.

If he has to think about what he's doing, he tends to make more
mistakes... especially handling the ball. He's more of an instintive,
flowing, streak player.

He has been blessed with playing for the best team of the 80's with
a great deal of talent around him. That always makes it easier to
hide negative aspects of his game. We'll never know if he could have
been a Superstar. Just like Bird made McHale, Magic made Worthy.

I wish that, just once, he looked like he enjoyed playing the game.
122.12My contest is bringing out the best in you Doug!RHETT::KNORRCarolina BlueTue Jan 23 1990 13:1914
    > He has been blessed with playing with the best team of the 80's

Why, thank you Doug. I wholeheartedly agree that, taken in sum,
Carolina did have the finest team of the decade!

I don't think it's fair to critize Jimbo for not looking like he's
enjoying the game. He's a serious kinda guy. Always has been.

BTW - Anybody seen Worthy in that Budweiser commerical yet? That
*look* he gives at the end of the commerical is truly scary.
Kinda guy who, if he was your daddy, would put the fear of
          God in ya!

Good objective view points Doug, of course Dan won't be able to buy
    them.....

Chris, I guess I'll take myself out of the running with this one but
when won considers the best teams of the 80's in college b-ball names
like Louisville, Indiana, Run D&NC Gougetown (tm) and Duke come to
mind first. These teams followed up a fine regular season performances
with fine NCAA showings. If not for one errant pass and some
questionable goaltending calls Smith would still be an 0-fer....

I agree Doug. Specially the point comparing McHale and Worthy.
I remember when the Knicks tried to sign McHale. I always felt

    have Larry next to him....

I think I owe Doug the courtesy of a comment. I agree with most of
what he says with two caveats: I have seen him go strong to the
defensive board when necessary, which is why I always contend that its
the game plan that makes him keep his distance. It's true that I don't
see him box out as I'd like. Also, I think he's a better open court
defender that he's being given credit for. His leaving his feet is
usually done in the context of the half-court trap when the Lakers are
quickly rotating. You want him to leave his feet there. He's never
asked to defend the low post. "Good defender" sums it up nicely.

I also think you could touch up the compliments. There's probably no
small forward in the league with a better postup game and maybe no
player in history is better filling the lane on the break.

He's an excellent complement to Magic. But he wouldn't be lost without
    him.

Sarge, I got to diagree with ya and defend the green and all that kind
of stuff the Jihad is famous for. McHale would have been an all-star
for the Knicks as well. His post up moves, his fallaways and turnaround
jumpers would all still have been there. All he would have need was
someone to get him the ball and the Knicks have usually had capable
guards. His defense wouyld have also been there and he was all nba
defensive player for a couple of years before the surgery......

James too would have been an all-star on anothe team say Atlanta or
Denver where ballot stuffing is condoned and incouraged.... ;^)

James Worthy is an above average forward who should get down on his
knees every evening and thank GOD he was fortunate enough to play
on the same team as Magic Johnson. We is a below average rebounder,
an average defender, an average shooter from the outside. Worthy's
greatest skill is running the open floor. He finishes off the break
    extremely well.

When Worthy came out in the draft, he was one of three top forwards:
the other two werre Terry Cummings and Dominique Wilkins. Switch
teams with either of those two, and the Lakers would still have at
least five championships, and the Hawks, Bucks, Clippers, and Spurs
    would still have none.

If the Lakers had Terry Cummings or Dominique Wilkins instead of
Worthy ........ c'mon NAZZ ..... Wilkins is the most selfish player in
the NBA ...... he doesn't fit in with the Lakers style and he thinks
defense goes around deyard. Cummings plays a stronger inside game than
Worthy, but doesn't run the floor half as well and isn't nearly as
quick .... aka he wouldn't help with the Lakers pressure D.

IMO James Worthy is a great player who will never get the recognition
he could because he (1) plays with Magic (2) plays on a team where
individual stats are second to winning.

But Greg, I feel and I believe most would agree that 'Nigue would have
changed his style to fit into the Lakers game plan. Everyone else has.
look at Woolridge a perfect example of a guy who only knew one thing
shooting the ball. Now he plays defense, pass the ball and runs the
court. This is the greatness of Magic. The others see him sacrifice
indivdually for the team and follow suit......

    >If you can't stop the guy from going in for dunks why should he pull up

When I was at the Forum last Friday night for the game against Philly, I
called James over, up to my seat, and asked him if he might just do this
for the nut cases in the Sports conference. He looked at me kind of
funny, so I 'splained to him what the sports conference are and explained
that there's a couple of guys who just don't get it, that a player should try to
work for the best shot possible, and if he would prove to them for me that
he can drain it from the outside, please. Well Jimmy responded (he
was very impressed with me and asked me to eschew the more formal
'James') "Why don't you just tell them" (in that magnificent tenor voice of
his) "to review the tapes of Tuesday's game where I hit 4 clutch jumpers in
the last two minutes of the game, including a 3-pointer?" Well, he made
an excellent point, that the perception of the dingbats (Micheal Thompson's
word, he got interested and listened in) in Sports is all wrong, and Jimmy's
jumper has improved tremendously with all the hard work he's put in since
he broke his leg during his rookie year.

The game was about to start, so I let them go, but I thought you guys should
know that Jimmy (James to you) is aware of the issue now.
