91.0. "The OFFICIAL NFL DRAFT topic" by OURGNG::J_WARDLE (There IS a Santa, Walton is out) Wed Dec 27 1989 13:56

Draft time is still several months away, but I'm starting to wonder who
the Jets might take with such a high draft pick so I decided to start
    this topic.

The Jets clearly need offensive line help, but I'd like to see them
draft a top notch wideout to replace Walker.

Toon and Walker were a very effective combination and with Walker
probably leaving, they need to help out Toon.

Also, the RB from Indiana may not be a bad choice, then they could
    trade McNeil.

Rumor has it that Reggie Rembert (WR) of West Virginia is a
possibility. I doubt it though - the Jets were never a team
to let common sense rule their drafting. Maybe things will
    be different with Steinberg...

My personal interest is in who the Patriots will draft (also
having a high pick). My brother-in-law, in one of the rare
moments when he says something that makes sense, suggests
    Percy Snow of Michigan State.

If anyone has the official order, maybe we could start a
    "first-round draft predictions" note later...

Lions draft 7th? I'll take it I guess...

I'd like to see them draft McCants (yeah right) or Snow...
After that, they don't need a RB. I don't think they need a
QB right now. That rules out either Thompson, who I think
the Jets, or even NE could use. If Rembert's Rice quality,
I'd grab him, otherwise I'd say a lineman. Anyone got list
    of top choices?

    Walt,

I have a list of potential first rounders at home.
I'll try and post it tomorrow. From what I remember-

QB - Peter Tom Willis, Tommy Hodson (potentail firsts)
John Friesz, Jeff George, Mike Buck, Frank Bauer (after 1sts)

RB - Blair Thomas, Anthony Thompson, Darrell Thompson

WR - Reggie Rembert, Clarkston Hines (?, if senior)

LB - Keith McCants, Percy Snow, Aaron Wallace, Johny Bailey

What are scouts saying about Mike Buck ? Not very often a quarterback
from the University of Maine was ever discussed as a draft possibility.

I heard his (Buck's) name being tossed around in the Patriots
Notesfile so I figured that I'd add it to the list.

If Ware and Harris do not come out for the draft, then I don't
think it's worth using a first rounder on any of these guys.

Signing Neil Lomax and giving him an incentive based contract
would be a much better move than spending a first round pick, and
first round money on those guys. They might pan out in a few years
but I don't think that they'd be worth it.

There are quite a few teams without legitimate QB's- the Patriots,
Raiders, Jets, Chargers, and the Cheifs come to mind immediately.

The guy to watch in the draft is a MLB from Baylor. His last name is
Francis, don't remember his first name. I saw two Baylor games this
year he was amazing. He's huge 6'5" 240lbs and real fast. Just as good
as Percy Snow. He can play DE and OLB also.

Atlanta has the first pick, and they've been talking to the Broncos
about some trades. Atlanta still has another pick in the first round (from
Washington). They've spent the last couple of years beefing up on defense, and
now they really need offensive help. The rumors I heard were, Broncos get the
first pick overall, Atlanta wants Mark Jackson, Clarence Kay, Broncos 2nd round
this year, and the Broncos 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in `91'.

I think the Donks would go for the first part of that deal, but I can't
see them being stupid enough to cripple themselves in `91' that way.

There's a lot of speculation that the Jets will trade their #1 pick
to the Cowboys after Atlanta makes the first pick. I guess it make a
difference who the Falcons snag. If the trade is made, the Jets get one
of the Cowboys second round picks and Steve Walsh.

    Possibilities:

Atlanta - RB (Thompson?), WR, OL
Jets - Trade (Walsh), DL, LB (McCants?)
Pats - Trade (QB?), QB, C, RB, LB (Snow, Francis)

Ken,

Three excellent TE's in this years draft:

Charles Arbuckle, UCLA, 6-2, 235, 4.85
Missed some playing time because of a knee injury, but played
hurt and was still effective. Excellent blocker, good receiver,
big boy.

Dave Colonna (Berman is gonna have a field day with this guy),
Duke, 6-5.5(!), 240, 4.9
Needs some work, but has good hands, is a good runnerand is quick
for his size. Needs help on pass blocking.

Scott Galbraith, USC, 6-2.5, 240, 4.8
Quick, good receiver, can go deep, decent blocker.

There are others, but these 3 seem to be the best this draft has
to offer with the exception of Brian Ross from Texas A&M who is a
project, but could surprise.

The Cowboys have said that they will be rebuilding in the off season.
Walsh has said that he doesn't see himself in a Cowboy uniform next
year. This all says that Dallas is willing to deal with somebody.
They need help at wide reciever and defensive line. Who would the Jets
be willing to part with in these areas? Would the Jets keep 3 QB's
    (Eason, O'Brien, Walsh)?

I can't answer you on that Mac, but I would say that the Jets could

    Mac,

If Michael Irvin and Kelvin Martin can stay healthy next year
the Cowboys would be well off there, relative to their offensive
    and defensive lines.

Of course, if they had a top pick in the draft (Jets) they should
definitely take the best available linebacker with that pick.

Irvin Fryar is at the most worth a late second round pick. Guys with great
speed and talent that don't produce are a dime a dozen specially at the
WR spot. I know, Dallas has 3 already in Dixon, Sheppard, and Ford and they
are all 4 years younger than Fryar.

Micheal Irvin and Kelvin Martin are quality recievers but both blew out knees
this year, I don't know what the status of either one is now. The Cowboys
need a top LB, WR, RB, DL. They do have 6 picks in the 1st 3 rounds of the
up and comming draft. Rumor has it that a lot of college juniors will come
out this year because of the fear that the NFL will go to a rookie salary
structure soon. This maybe the last year for real big bucks for rookies.

I'm Looking forward to the draft.

Your 100% correct. He has all the potential in the world but has only
been an average WR (except the year they went to the Super Bowl).
There are a lot of guys in the NFL with the speed and ability to go
all the way every time they touch the ball but they don't do it often
enough. To be nice I won't call him a head-case but I will say he must
      have a problem concentrating. He's a dime a dozen.

	Major Harris, QB, West Virginia

from quitting school and getting a job? College players should

He just said he was going to the NFL. The NFL knows they don't have a
legal foot to stand on if they had said no, and a team wanted him. This
all started with Cris Carter being declared ineligible by the NCAA for
signing with an agent. The NFL rule has been that if a player has NCAA
eligibility, they can't be drafted. When Carter was declared
ineligible, even though his four years of eligibility was not used up,
the NFL had no choice but to let him in. The next year Ironhead Heywood
wanted to come out as a Junior. What he did was to publicly declare
that he signed with an agent, lose his eligibility, and get drafted in
    the supplementle draft.

Doc, that seems to be just a perception of some of the fans (and

nevermind getting into some hi-tech offense.

/Don, you haven't missed anything. Ware is still saying he is going

Glenn, Junior Seau had a pretty awesome year with USC. I was on the
inside a lot, but he also blitzed frequently. He's very quick, very
aggressive, and is probably still filling out. It's only recently that
I heard that he was coming out, because I think that next year he's a
junior (in school). Unfortunately, I heard that Mark Carrier is
probably leaving the Trojans as well, another underclassman. The 'SC
defense looked like it would be dominating next year. Now, they could
have a couple holes to fill.

Seau is considered the best linebacker in the draft (potentially) after
McCants, if it makes you feel any better.

On Saturday Andre Ware officially announced that he would not return to
UofH next year but would enter the NFL draft instead. He had stated in
the past that he would return for his senior year and a chance to
repeat as the Heisman trophy winner. When announcing that he would
enter the draft he said that many things have changed since he first
decided to stay in school. He didn't elaborate, but you have to figure
that the NFL's relaxation of their draft policy, and the move of Jack
Pardee to the Oilers had alot to do with it.

My guess is that Detroit will beat the Oilers to the punch!! Ware
could step right into the Lions offense...and give them depth by moving
Rodney Peete to the backup spot. Or, they could draft Ware and trade
him to the Oilers for Ernest Givins and a draft pick or another player.

Having just started my mock draft the other night, I couldn't find
another player better suited to be selected by the Lions with their

I only had a quick chance to browse the headlines in the sports section
this weekend, but I do remember seeing the the Oilers were definitely
interested in Ware. Actually that may be a good move for both parties.
Who is Moon's backup? Ware would provide a good insurance policy since
he is used to that type of offense. The hometown draw wouldn't hurt
either. Meanwhile, Ware would have a chance to develop rather than be
thrown into the fire. He and Moon are friends (Moon bought a billboard

    consulted Moon about football).

The Patriots used to hold "Draft Centrals" in Boston, Springfield

I wish to reinforce the statement made two or three replies back:

Rob Moore is NOT eligible in the regular NFL draft. He chose not to
declare himself eligible. He is expected to graduate early, thus
making it possible for him to be (perhaps) the only player in a
    supplemental draft.

Reggie Rembert and Greg McMurtry appear to be the top two receivers
    available in the 'regular' draft.

P.S. I'm gonna compare my mock draft to Buchsbaum's......make a few
minor changes (maybe) and enter my SWAG draft in a day or two. Last
year I was disappointed at my prognostications....although it's hard to
decide what makes for a successful mock draft.....number of players
going to the right teams with the right picks?......number of players
predicted to go in the first round actually going in the first
round?....number of top ten picks chosen in the top ten?

I think I had about 20-22 players picked in last year's first round

    Re: the supplemental draft.....

The supplemental draft still lives!!! The criteria for having it has
changed. About the only way a player can 'qualify' for it is by NOT
leaving school early (ie..as a sophomre, junior, etc.) but by
GRADUATING early. Moore is slated to graduate in May (I believe) and
he wanted to dedicate his time to his studies...not allowing for him to
attend the Scouting combine and other NFL camps. He is NOT leaving
school early....but will be out of college AFTER the draft. Thus, the
NFL is already considering a supplemental draft where Moore will be the
    ONLY player eligible.

I'm not making this up....it has been documented in Pro Football
Weekly, as well as the Sporting News.

His numbers are pretty good, but far from outstanding.
I saw him during a bowl game and I was not impressed.
Peter Tom Willis, on the other hand, did show me a lot.
He'd be a good 2dp for the Pats. In a draft as good this
it would be a shame to gamble and lose on the 3rd pick

The problem with Percy Snow is he just isn't the great athlete that
some had him pegged to be. In a pair of gym shorts and t-shirt doing
drills hes not looking as good as the other ILB in the draft. Put
him on the football field and he's a force. In short he's a football
player. Somebody is going to get him cheap late 1st round might even
might slip to the early 2nd round.

The other guy in the draft that is falling fast is Bernard Clark,
ILB from Miami. He's going to be a steal as a 6-7 round selection.
Same thing as Snow, hes been titled a better football player than
athlete. Anybody remember Chris Spielman(sp) now with Detroit.

Nelly, I'm looking forward to your mock draft. If Anthony Thompson
RB Indiana doesn't go in the 1st round, where do you think he will
go. He's another one everybody seems to have forgotten about.

Food for thought on Jeff George:

The image I have of him is based on a picture in Sports Illustrated
from his one year at Purdue. Apparently, he hurt his ankle during
a game late in the season, so they had to take him off on the golf
	cart to the lockerroom.

The picture in SI showed George riding on the back of the cart
with his mother, who came down on the field to make sure he
was okay. Whether she brought him some cookies and milk is
	unclear.

Why does that make me think of Tony Eason?

Jeff George on the Patriots would be the biggest draft mistake
they have ever made. It would make Reggie Dupard's selection
	worthy of a Nobel Prize.

With the third pick in the draft, with all the juniors coming
out, the pick MUST BE an All-Pro player within two years to be
	considered successful in my book.

I wish there was a no-doubt John Hannah or Anthony Munoz out
there. A ten year All-pro lineman... since there isn't, I
say go with an impact player on defense in round one and a
	lineman in round 2.

    Hoot,

McCants held a workout the other day for NFL teams to come check him
out in things like how fast he runs, how much he lifts, etc (reminds me
of a horse sale or slave auction :^( ). NFL folks walked away less
than impressed. His 40 times were average, his lifting ability was
average, and he's not as big as Alabama was listing him. (Only 6-3,
not 6-5.) Top it all off with his reputation as being a head case and
a recent report that his knee is a little "loose" and you get the
    picture.

Based on past history the last thing the Falcons need is another head
case underachiever. (Perhaps he'll still be available when the Raiders
    pick though! ;^) )

I've said before and I'll say again: NFL scouts and personnel
departments fall victim to paralysis by analysis. There's so much
information available and so many times they can check someone out
that sooner or later any scout is bound to find something wrong
with a player, and then some small negatives are bound to overwhelm
a lot of positives. Perfectly good football players get overlooked
because they don't fit the mold and that's why there are free agents
and late round draft choices who make it every year.

I'm not saying that the negatives about McCants aren't legitimate,
but I do take a lot of these reports with several grains of salt.
For one thing, the teams in the league may be trying to cover up
their real intentions (Dick Steinberg has often said that that's
one of the most useful things about the Buchsbaums and Kipers of
the world, it gives them something to use as a smoke screen in
pre-draft press conferences) and for another thing, if they can
bad-mouth a prospect enough, they can use it against the prospect
when it come contract negotiation time.

Another thing about these pre-draft workouts:

If a player happens to have a bad day and runs a slower than normal
40 yard dash time, for example, no matter how well he may do in
subsequent workouts, he'll get stuck with that lousy time. A lot
of players figure it isn't worth the risk.

I wonder if one of the considerations is money (Stupid kid! Of COURSE
it's money!)

Okay, Okay. SORRY! I mean... more of a consideration than it used to be.

Any more, the first pick is going to want what? 6 million? Plus a
signing bonus?

So for that amount of money, do you take a chance on `a head case'? On
somebody who tries out at about half the strength of the `avg' LB? On somebody
whose not as big, as speedy, or as healthy (loose knees?) as originally
reported? If I was signing checks, you sure as hell wouldn't. If Atlanta was
smart, they could probably trade their first for a 2nd and a 3rd this year AND
next year. Maybe even more. I expect eventually, more and more teams are going
to start realizing that paying megabucks for an unproven College Kid is
slightly idiotic. Even a `Superstar' isn't worth as much as people think. Look
at Herschel Walker, Eric Dickerson. Bosworth and Mandaritch (sp) are perfectly
good examples of what you often get with a highly paid, highly touted, untried
College Kid. To be worth the money, they'd have to be the franchise.... and
the NFL is finally beginning to realize that NO one person is the franchise.

Whats a poor GM to do? Mandarich didnt have the benefit from training

INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) -- Quarterbacks Jeff George and Andre Ware are
trying to bring down linebacker Keith McCants in a reversal of on-field
roles to determine the top choice in this year's NFL draft.
George, Ware and McCants were among about 25 underclassmen who
attended a special private NFL scouting combine Friday and Saturday at
the Indianapolis Colts training complex.
Most players decided not to workout Saturday because of cold
weather and the fact most teams have watched players run drills in
private sessions. The regular combine conducted in February is at the
Hoosier Dome, but the stadium could was being used for Farm Aid IV.
McCants worked out last Thursday before scouts from every NFL team.
George worked out for 15 teams last Thursday, seven others last week and
plans another session next Thursday at the University of Illinois.
``I'm happy with my performances in those workouts,'' George said.
``They know what I can do. If anybody else wants to see what I can do,
they can come watch me next Thursday.''
George set national prep passing marks at Warren Central High
School in Indianapolis, then went to nearby Purdue. After struggling
through his freshman season and watching coach Leon Burtnett be fired,
George announced he would transfer to Miami (Fla.).
George again changed his mind and wound up playing for Illinois the
past two seasons before deciding the give up his final year of college
eligibility for a chance to be taken in the NFL draft on April 22.
``I've heard I'll go anywhere from No. 1 to No. 10 or lower,''
George said. ``I don't see myself as No. 1. I want to do my best for the
scouts and let them decide where I should be drafted. I have no
preference where I go. I just want to play.''
George ate breakfast Saturday with Atlanta coach Jerry Glanville,
whose team owns the draft's No. 1 pick. He also enjoyed a Friday night
dinner with New England officials, who have the No. 3 pick but are very
interested in George and fearful he might be gone by their current
selection. The Falcons had been expected to take McCants, but George and
Ware are also being considered.
Another player whose stock has risen among NFL personnel directors
in Penn State running back Blair Thomas. He has made a strong impression
on Dick Steinberg, the New York Jets football operations director.
``He was productive over a long period of time,'' Steinberg said.
``He finished last season extremely strong. He is a very fine player. We
have to figure out who is above him and who is below him. I don't know
if anybody is above him.''

order of selection for the first 25 picks BEFORE tearing me apart!!
It's hard as hell to feel comfortable with some of the guys I have
still available late in the first round (ie. the Thompsons, Percy
Snow..)....but rather than put two or three possibilities for every
    team...I just wung it!!!

    Nelly,

I'm not tearing into you. I know you enter a mock draft contest
so I figured I pass along to you some Dallas draft scoop. Jimmy Johnson
has stated that there 1st three picks (numbers 21,26,47 overall) must
start or see a lot of playing time this coming season. With the season
Eugine Lockhart had last year I don't think too many rookies are going
to take away his playing time. Besides Dallas has to many other needs.
With that in mind Percy Snow is not a good pick for them. They want a
OLB in the 1st round and they are VERY high on Aaron Wallace. JJ likes
his size and speed. Wallace is really moving up the draft charts, but
he should be around by the time Dallas picks. Now if Anthony Thomas would
only slip to the 26 overall pick.

I agree with the draft depends on what Glanville decides to do. I
think he may be throwing up a smoke screen to fool everybody. And who
can really tell what the Jets will do with thier pick?? I enjoy the
draft because it is interesting to see what everyone thinks everyone
else should do and take. I will pass along what I think will be the
first 11 or so picks just to stir things up a little.

    Re: .150,

Having sorted thru a dozen or so of my 'preliminary' drafts to
ultimately decide on the one I posted earlier, I can honestly say that
every one of your picks has as good a chance of being correct as any of
mine. There are so many players of similar quality in this year's
draft that it is bound to be the most interesting in a long time.

I toyed with Barnett going to the Rams before I opted to put Ray Agnew
in that spot. I still feel uncomfortable about having Darrell and
Anthony Thompson going 19th and 20th respectively. Further, after
getting Chuck's input re: Dallas and Aaron Wallace, I'm stuck with
Percy Snow being available to the 49ers with the last pick in the first
round!!!! Why do I feel so uncomfortable with my mock draft?

    RE: .150

No way the RAIDERS will take an O-lineman in the first round. I don't
know why you think they are looking for O-linemen, but htat is not
true. Last year's top pick, 1st pick in the 2nd round, Steve Wisnewski,
has been called a future perennial All-Pro from several ports 'o call.
They just picked up All-Pro Max Montoya from Plan B. Don Mosebar and
Bruce Wilkerson are solid performers. LT is the only question mark
where ? (mental block, I can't think of his name) has been criticized
but Art Shell (who is arguably the best to ever play the position) has
confidence in him. The RAIDERS will go for a LB or maybe a RB in the
    1st round.

Papa Joe says he's the best running back he's ever coached. That's
pretty good considering Paterno coached Lydell Mitchel, Franco Harris,
Curt Warner, DJ Dozier, etc. I don't think there's a better running
    back than Thomas out there.

    RE: the draft

From what I hear out of Pittsburgh, the Steelers will take Spindler if
he's still available. Can anyone confirm this? The kid has enourmous
    all-pro potential.

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Thumbnail sketches of the leading quarterbacks
eligible for the April 22-23 NFL draft (name, school, height, weight and
40-yard dash time listed):
	Jeff George, 6-4, 210. Illinois, 4.99. Classic drop-back passer.
Strong arm and quick release. Mobility and poise under pressure
questioned. Atlanta leaning toward taking him No. 3, although some are
wary because he lost experience by skipping senior year.
Andre Ware, Houston, 6-2, 205, 4.63. Heisman Trophy winner coming
out after junior season, when he passed for 4,699 yards and 46 TDs. Will
go in first round. Can move out of pocket. Ideal run-and-shoot
quarterback. Question if he can be productive as drop-back passer. Might
not have to if Detroit or Houston draft him.
Scott Mitchell, Utah, 6-5, 230, 4.91. Tall, southpaw with a strong
arm and quick release. Reminds many of Boomer Esiason. Good touch
passer, but a bit inconsistent. Comes out of passing offense. Another
junior who could be a first rounder.
John Friesz, Idaho, 6-4, 210. 5.13. Productive drop-back passer in
college, where he played home games in a dome. Works hard, has good arm
and touch. Not a scrambler, and did not face top college competition.
Can go from anywhere between late first round and early third.
Cary Conklin, Washington, 6-4, 220, 4.94. Helped himself with good
Hula Bowl. Has ideal QB size, good arm and plays hurt. Showed great
improvement as a senior, but still a bit inconsistent. Borderline
first-rounder.
Peter Tom Willis, 6-2 1/2, 190, 4.95. Was not a starter until senior
year. Showed smarts and poise handling pro-style offense. His stock fell
some when he appeared fatigued in postseason and was not impressive at
scouting combine.
	Tommy Hodson, Louisiana State, 6-2, 200, 4.92. Four-year starter,
finished strong in 1989 after an off-year as junior. Streak passer who
appears unable to carry a team but could prosper with good supporting
cast.
Mike Buck, Maine, 6-2, 225, 4.85. Built like a LB, and stands up to
the pass rush. Good leader with a strong arm, but has had knee surgery
and played light college competition. Impressive East-West Shrine game
helped.
	Kirk Baumgartner, Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 603, 200, 5.16.
Displayed an NFL arm while playing against Div. III competition. Looked
shaky Senior Bowl week but played well in the game. Probably won't go
before middle rounds and needs a couple of seasons to develop.
Todd Ellis, South Carolina, 6-1, 205, 4.97. Was finally living up
to his promise when he suffered season-ending knee injury in eighth game
last season. Never mobile to begin with. A risky pick who could hit it
big or bust.
Frank Baur, Lafayette, 6-3, 220, 4.96. Played two impressive
seasons in Div. I-AA, but suffered tendinitis in throwing elbow that
seemed to affect his throwing in Hula Bowl and Blue-Gray game. Must cut
down his high-risk passes.
Major Harris, West Virginia, 6-0, 220, 4.55. Stock fell during
junior season last year. Can make big plays, but lacks discipline and is
short. Not as good from the pocket as on the run. Could be a
middle-round pick in this deep QB field. Might go to CFL, where he would
likely star.
	Others to watch: Troy Taylor, California; Neil O'Donnell, Maryland;
Tony Rice, Notre Dame; Reggie Slack, Auburn; Todd Hammel, Stephen F.
Austin.

                          _R_u_n_n_i_n_g_ _b_a_c_k_s
Blair Thomas, Penn State. 5-10 1/2, 194, 4.45. Best of a loaded field
of RBs, should go among top four picks. Capped comeback senior year with
outstanding Holiday Bowl against BYU. Can catch and make defenders miss.
Two drawbacks are size and major knee construction before his senior
year, but he held up well as a senior and could be a franchise back.
Emmitt Smith, Florida, 5-9, 200, 4.54. Great strength, balance and
quickness. Consistent performer although lacking ideal RB's size and
speed. Good receiver and durable. First rounder, could be Tampa Bay's
No. 4. pick if the Buccaneers don't trade for a RB.
Darrell Thompson, Minnesota, 6-1, 220, 4.42. Had best season in
1987 as a sophomore, but was outstanding in Senior Bowl last year. Great
size, speed and acceleration. Needs to break tackles better. Probable
first rounder.
Rodney Hampton, Georgia, 6-0, 215, 4.44. Blazing speed, ability to
clear the pile on short yardage downs and excellent receiver. Has had
knee problems. Probable first rounder in crowded running back pool.
	Harold Green, South Carolina, 6-1 1/2, 216, 4.62. Tremendous
all-around skills for his size, among best receiving RBs in nation last
year. Outplayed Indiana's Anthony Thompson in East-West Shrine game, and
good postseason workouts have improved his stock. Should go in first
round.
Anthony Thompson, Indiana, 5-11, 210, 4.64. Amazingly durable and
strong back who bench presses 415 pounds and squats 465. Makes up for
lack of breakaway speed with ability to bull defenders for extra yards.
Workhorse back should go in first round.
Reggie Cobb, Tennessee, 6-0, 225, 4.57. One of most talented
runners in draft. Because he was twice suspended from the team at
Tennessee because of off-field problems, lesser backs will be drafted
before him. He could go as high as the second round, but carries a lot
of risk.
Dexter Carter, Florida State, 5-8, 170, 4.44. Has held up well
despite size. Could do for some team what Dave Meggett did for Giants
last year. Has sprinter's speed, and will likely be used in passing
situations.
	Steve Broussard, Washington State, 5-7, 200, 4.45. Mini-back who
received little publicity in college but has really impressed at combine
workouts. Reaches hole quickly with darting running style. Good
receiver. But he has had shoulder injuries.
James Gray, Texas Tech, 5-10, 205, 4.55. Productive, unflashy, back
who improved every year. Has good moves and makes sharp cuts. Did little
blocking as deep back in I-formation.
                            _F_u_l_l_b_a_c_k_s
Anthony Johnson, Notre Dame, 6-0, 222, 4.65. Highest rated pure FB
in draft. Can run inside, block and catch although he is neither
exceptionally big nor fast. Underrated in college because FB gets
overlooked in Notre Dame's offense. Borderline first-rounder.
Carwell Gardner, Louisville, 6-1, 230, 4.63. Was DE at Kentucky
before transferring to Louisville and moving to FB last season. Super
ability, blocks and catches well but lacks FB experience. Suspended from
Kentucky team after 1987 season. Went from off the board in preseason to
potential second rounder.
Barry Foster, Arkansas, 5-10, 217, 4.57. Bursts out of amazingly
low stance, hits holes quick. Tough to bring down. A little small for
FB. Surprisingly left school after junior season but will go high in
lean year for FBs.
Johnny Johnson, San Jose State, 6-2, 210, 4.59. Great all-around
athlete. Recruited as RB and played WR before settling at FB. Can play
HB, FB. H-Back or WR in NFL. Small forward on basketball team.
Unimpressive combine workouts and moodiness hurts his position.
Leroy Hoard, Michigan, 5-10, 215, 4.6. Can play RB or FB. Good
receiver. Came through in big games. Would make fine backup or
third-round back because of versatility. Blocking and conditioning need
improvement.

Thumbnail sketeches of top wide receivers and tight ends available
in April 22-23 NFL draft (including name, school, height, weight,
40-yard dash time):
                          _W_i_d_e_ _r_e_c_e_i_v_e_r_s
Reggie Rembert, West Virginia, 6-4, 195, 4.42 seconds. Tall and
gives up nothing in speed. Consistent deep threat. Needs to sharpen his
pass routes, which he should do through repetitions. Highest rated WR in
draft and first rounder.
Alex Wright, Auburn, 5-11, 185, 4.35. Fastest of top WR prospects.
Stretches defense and cuts well for a sprinter. Can return kickoffs.
Vertical jump of 35 inches. Might be great, but has some trouble judging
ball in the air. Played for a running offense. Probable second rounder.
Greg McMurtry, Michigan, 6-3, 200, 4.55. Big target, gets open deep
but needs to improve his speed and quickness off the line. Center
fielder for baseball team, turned down six-figure bonus as Red Sox'
first-round pick in 1986. May go in first round.
Mike Bellamy, Illinois, 6-0, 190, 4.43. Developed into top notch WR
last year. Strong and fast, but drops passes he should catch and his
concentration wanes at times. Also returns kicks.
Fred Barnett, Arkansas State, 6-0, 200, 4.43. Caught 95 passes in
four seasons in a wishbone college offense. Fast and excellent leaper
with a 40-inch vertical jump. Needs to develop pass routes and reads.
Stacy Simmons, Florida, 5-9, 185, 4.33. Development hurt by knee
injury and playing in running offense in college. But he showed lots of
potential, and adds excitement as a return man.
Ricky Proehl, Wake Forest, 5-11, 188, 4.5. Has enough speed to get
open and outstanding hands. Not much of an open-field runner. Would be
best used as a possession receiver opposite a burner.
Shannon Sharpe, Savannah State (Ga.), 6-1, 225, 4.59. Brother of
Packers WR Sterling Sharpe. Good possession receiver, needs to work on
blocking and keeping his weight down.
Clarkston Hines, Duke, 5-11, 170, 4.48. Set NCAA record with 38
career TD receptions. Lack of size and speed prevent him from going in
the first round. But he gets open, catches the ball and runs precise
routes.
                            _T_i_g_h_t_ _e_n_d_s
Eric Green, Liberty, 6-4, 265. 4.79. Best of a weak TE field. Big,
fast, and a good blocker. Could be outstanding if he keeps working. Must
develop upper body to go along with big strong legs. Probable late
first-round, early second-round pick.
Jesse Anderson, Mississippi State, 6-2, 242, 4.58. Played OLB and
FB in between stints at TE in college. Might end up at FB or H-Back.
Excellent runner after the catch. Blocking needs work.
	Mike Jones, Texas A&M, 6-3, 245, 4.7. Made great strides as a
senior. Can block, catch and run but often lacks intensity. Clutch
receiver.
Charles Arbuckle, UCLA, 6-2, 239, 4.61. Seemed to miss having Troy
Aikman throw to him last year; stopped improving and lost standing as
No. 1 TE prospect. Great talent: 36-inch vertical jump and benches 375.
Has had knee injury and not much of a blocker. Could be an H-Back.
Scott Galbraith, Southern Cal, 6-2, 257, 4.91. More of a blocker
than receiver, although his catching skills improved. Should fit in on a
power running team.

Well Charles, I sure hope the Chargers and Bucs make the trade for Gary
Anderson. He lives in Tampa and loves it there, so if we trade him, I
hope we trade him there and get Tampa's #1. Then we'd have the #6 &
#7 picks in the first round, and we'll draft Junior Seau and Richmond
    Webb. Let's do it!

draft, listing name, school, height, weight and 40-yard dash time:
                             _T_a_c_k_l_e_s
Richmond Webb, Texas A&M, 6-6, 290, 5.09 seconds. Moved from LG to
LT last year, and will probably stay at tackle. Greatly improved his
pass blocking and had outstanding Senior Bowl. Punishing drive blocker.
Top 10 pick.
Glenn Parker, Arizona, 6-5 1/2, 300. 5.16. Outstanding size. Quick
for a big man. Never played football until junior college. Techniques
need work. Suffered a hairline right tibula fracture. Will be
24-year-old rookie.
Bill Schultz, USC, 6-4, 287. 5.15. Played only one season at USC,
and drew little preseason publicity. Tough and strong, bench presses
over 400 pounds. Could also play G. Might need a few years before he is
ready to start.
                              _G_u_a_r_d_s
Mohammed Elewonibi, BYU, 6-4, 285, 5.1. Outland Trophy winner as
nation's best interior lineman last year. Born in Nigeria, mother is
French-Canadian. Never played football until junior college. Big, smart,
mature and good pass blocker who might be tried at T. Negatives are five
shoulder operations, lack of experience and he will be a 25-year-old
rookie. Still, talent alone makes him a first rounder.
Reggie Redding, Fullerton State, 6-3 1/2, 280, 5.18. Fine trap
blocker. Played T in college but will probably move to G in NFL. Needs
to work on pass blocking. Had trouble with Reynaldo Turnbull at Senior
Bowl practices. Late starter, began playing football as senior in high
school. Lot of ability.
Keith Sims, Iowa State, 6-2 1/4, 310, 5.24. Massive, drive blocker
who keeps moving up and might go in the first round. Has started at T
and C as well as G. Bench press over 450 pounds. Was overweight in the
Blue-Gray game and must work to keep weight down.
Tim Grunhard, Notre Dame, 6-2, 298, 5.16. Big, tough and fast.
Blocking techniques need work but he is versatile and excellent
long-snapper.
                             _C_e_n_t_e_r_s
Bern Brostek, Washington, 6-2 1/2, 290, 5.31. Started all but one
game in four years of college. Not real athletic but strong and
amazingly durable. Can handle NT without help. Has played some G.
Dean Caliguire, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 265, 5.12. Great competitor, works
hard and strong. Bench presses 420 and squats 615. Good run blocker.
Suffered broken ankle last season.
Frank Cornish, UCLA, 6-4, 285, 5.34. Strong, durable, excellent
pass protector who needs to work on his run blocking. Benches 430 and
squats 520. Father Frank played DT for Dolphins and Bears.

Cortez Kennedy, Miami, 6-2, 293, 4.85 seconds. Ideal 4-3 DT. Had
weight problems in college and only started one year, but showed a ton
of talent as a senior. Quick off the ball, fast, good power and can
split the double team. Only drawback is he is short. Certain first
rounder.
Mark Spindler, Pittsburgh, 6-4, 290, 4.94. Coming out after junior
season, although he won't turn 21 until Nov. 28. Good outside moves and
fluid inside rusher. Bench presses over 420 pounds. Extremely
aggressive, but has history of knee injuries. First rounder.
Ray Agnew, North Carolina St., 6-3, 280, 4.82. Outstanding lateral
movement and strength, benches over 500 pounds. Consistent inside force,
may end up at DE. Likely middle to late first rounder.
Mike Fox, West Virginia, 6-6, 280, 4.99. Showed great improvement
senior year after moving from contain tackle to rush tackle. Dominates
middle of the line. Continued to move up with good off-season workouts.
A future All-Pro if he develops some finesse moves. Late first-round or
early second-round pick.
Jeff Alm, Notre Dame, 6-5, 260, 4.93. Tall rusher, excels at
batting down passes. Height sometimes works against him on cut blocks,
though. Intercepted 3 passes and batted down 6 last year, but had just 1
sack. Could go in first round.
Fred Washington, TCU, 6-2, 280, 5.05. Strong and hard worker. Great
competitor who can play anywhere along DL. Plays low and controls line
of scrimmage. Hindered by ankle injuries last year. Might be moved to
DE.
Tony Savage, Washington State, 6-3, 305, 5.19. Wide body, pure
power rusher who often flushes passer from the pocket. Must control his
weight to retain mobility. Will play NT or 4-3 DT.
Tony Siragusa, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 290, 4.89. Came back last year
after missing 1988 season because of major knee surgery. Was perhaps
best sophomore DL prospect in 1986, before knee injuries. Will be solid
4-3 DT if knees hold up.
                          _D_e_f_e_n_s_i_v_e_ _e_n_d_s
Reynaldo Turnbull, West Virginia, 6-4, 245, 4.62. Has outstanding
pass rushing talents that are so much in demand. Played OLB in college,
but was used more like a DE and will probably play on the line in NFL.
Hard to throw over. Will be 24-year-old rookie. Probable first DE
drafted.
Oliver Barnett, Kentucky, 6-2 3/4, 290. 4.81. Fast with good
acceleration. Underrated in college. Avid weight lifter, benches 420
pounds and squats 850. Played DT in wide-tackle six-man front, which is
like DE in pro defense.
Craig Veasey, Houston, 6-2, 280, 4.92. Excellent pass rushing
technique. Applies pressure from inside and hustles. Could move to NT.
Anthony Smith, Arizona, 6-4, 250, 4.84. Good pass rusher, but might
lack size to play DE in NFL. May switch to OLB. Will be used as pass
rushing specialist at start of his pro career. Nice spin move, but lacks
strenghth and bulk. Sat out Senior Bowl with knee injury.
Joel Smeenge, Western Michigan, 6-5, 250, 4.7. Hybrid DE-OLB pass
rushing specialist, really moved up with impressive Senior Bowl week.
Can beat blocker wide on pass rush, and learned good inside move. Needs
to add bulk, but any pass rusher this good will be drafted in first two
rounds.

    FYI.......

    A couple more rumors.....

Indianapolis offered Chris Hinton, Andre (?) Rison and their #2 pick
for Atlanta's first pick in the draft (this deal was originally
suggested by the FALCONS) and Atlanta turned it down!!! Then, Mike
Herok (?) (whoever the GM in Atlanta is) called Jim Irsay later asking
him to re-open the talks. Atlanta said that they would now make that
very same deal (are you following this?).....and the two teams are
currently deciding whether or not to go thru with it!!

    Another trade rumor:

The Saints have offered Craig 'Ironhead' Heywood and Rueben Mayes (in
addition to a draft pick) to the Eagles for Keith Jackson!!!

Lastly, the Patriots are said to be leaning strongly towards trading
down in the first round if Jeff George and Blair Thomas are taken with
the first two picks in the draft.

What is Chandler's stats? Maybe he's not making it back from his latest
injury? He certainly showed enough promise to make this look like a
stupid deal on the Colts part unless he isn't making it back.....

Another thing how many years are the Colts quaranteed sellouts at the
Dome? Perhaps time is running out and they're signing the local
hero to put people in the seats. Kinda of like some team around
    here did.

The real stupid part is to trade George's only protection player (Hinton).
Dickerson will retire without Hinton to blow open the holes.

draft, listing name, school, height, weight and 40-yard dash time:
                       _O_u_t_s_i_d_e_ _l_i_n_e_b_a_c_k_e_r_s
Keith McCants, Alabama, 6-5, 256, 4.51. Was expected to be Falcons'
No. 1 pick, until he hired the wrong agent, refused to workout for
scouts and news leaked of an old knee injury. His attitude has scared
off teams but he has to be a top five pick. Combines a lineman's size
with LB's speed and tenacity. Can line up almost anywhere on the field.
May play ILB, or even DE. Franchise player.
Junior Seau, USC, 6-2, 240, 4.61. Born Tiaini Seau Jr. in American
Samoa, his friends call him Junior. Combines great speed with 440-pound
bench press. Raw talent overcomes his lack of college experience. Rated
amazingly high for someone who started just one year in college and
passed up senior season. Nobody seems to mind his bad Rose Bowl. Certain
first-round pick.
James Francis, Baylor, 6-4 1/2, 245, 4.76. Underrated in college
despite starting three seasons and making things happen. Blocked 8 kicks
and 5 passes, intercepted 4 and recovered 3 fumbles last year. Throws
blockers around. Played three years of basketball for Baylor, appearing
in NCAA and NIT tournaments. First rounder.
Chris Singleton, Arizona, 6-2, 245, 4.62. Not as flashy as other
top OLB prospects but steady performer and hard worker. Benches over 425
pounds. Missed Senior Bowl to give bone marrow transplant to twin
brother Kevin, who suffers from leukemia. Only crowded LB field can keep
him out of first round.
Ron Cox, Fresno State, 6-1 1/2, 238, 4.63. Coming out after
outstanding junior season. Pass rusher, must prove he can play in
coverage. Another question is whether his ability was inflated by weak
college opposition. First or second rounder.
Aaron Wallace, Texas A&M, 6-3, 230, 4.5. Great natural talent.
Speedy blitzer who must hit the weight room and learn how to drop into
coverage to make it big in NFL. Erratic senior season probably knocked
him from first round but will go in top three rounds.
Tony Bennett, Mississippi, 6-1 1/2, 234, 4.62. Perfect LB: fast,
tough and has a pet python. Avid weight lifter, benches 425 and squats
600. Needs development, especially on pass coverage. Probably second
rounder because of LB surplus.
Terry Wooden, Syracuse, 6-2, 232, 4.62. Good blitzer, and has speed
to cover backs although it will take some work. Needs to get stronger,
and is coming off non-serious knee injury suffered in East-West Shrine
game. Second rounder.
Andre Collins, Penn State, 6-1, 220, 4.74. Played S first two years
at Penn State. Naturally, his strong point is pass coverage. Good
special teams player. Lacks LBs size, but is well-coached, smart and
disciplined.
Darion Conner, Jackson State, 6-2 1/2, 256, 4.77. Great physical
talent, but raw and did not face top college competition.
                        _I_n_s_i_d_e_ _l_i_n_e_b_a_c_k_e_r_s
Lamar Lathon, Houston, 6-3, 248, 4.54. Big, aggressive and fast.
Can play any LB spot, outside or inside. Suffered fractured sternum in
car accident last summer and missed half of 1989 season with knee
injury. Is passing up senior season, in part, to pay for rehabilitation
for his crack-addicted sister. Lacks experience but talent makes him
first-round pick.
Percy Snow, Michigan St., 6-1, 238, 4.68. Probably best pure ILB in
draft. Wide neck, powerful body makes him ideal for run stuffing. Also
excellent in coverage. Started every game last three years. Played MLB
of 4-3 in college, often lining up behind a DT. Needs to work on his
reads and reactions a bit. First rounder.
Jeroy Robinson, Texas A&M, 6-1, 242, 4.59. Capped an outstanding
first year at ILB with a fine Hula Bowl and impressive postseason
testing. Was a backup OLB in 1988. Bench presses close to 500 pounds and
amazingly quick. Inexperienced.
Bryce Paup, Northern Iowa, 6-4, 240, 4.99. Ferocious tackler,
played DE and OLB before settling in at ILB at Div. I-AA school. Best
suited for ILB in 3-4. Works hard, will do what it takes to make it in
NFL. Has some trouble getting outside on sweeps.

                           _C_o_r_n_e_r_b_a_c_k_s
J.D. Williams, Fresno St., 5-10, 175, 4.29. Fastest player in
draft, with 38-inch vertical jump. Blocked 6 kicks in 1988. Excellent
bump-and-run cover man. Has trouble on the runs, perhaps because of
size. Best of a mediocre group of CBs, will go in first round.
Vince Buck, Central (Ohio) St., 6-0, 200, 4.77. Big, strong,
four-year starter at small college. Might have trouble adjusting
coverage to NFL-calibre receivers. Will return kicks until ready to play
CB.
LeRoy Butler, Florida State, 5-11, 192, 4.48. Moved from FS to CB
last season. Still has some problems on man-to-man coverage, but handles
zone and forces run well. Plays hurt and returns kicks. If he falters at
CB, can move back to FS.
Tony Stargell, Tennessee State, 5-11, 179, 4.38. Overlooked but
excellent small-college coverage CB. Started four years and has perfect
CB mentality: he is confident and not afraid to gamble. Not invited to
February combine, but might sneak into the first round.
                             _S_a_f_e_t_i_e_s
Mark Carrier, USC, 6-0, 185, 4.5. Could start at FS as a rookie.
Follows former Trojans safeties Ronnie Lott and Dennis Smith. Won Jim
Thorpe award last year, as junior, for best DB in nation. Great range,
can make big plays but drops interceptions. Probable first DB pick.
Pat Terrell, Notre Dame, 6-0 1/2, 200, 4.48. Played WR two years
before moving to FS. Has size, speed and strentgh. Reads QBs and
anticipates well. Not much of a hitter on running plays. Late first,
early second round.
	Robert Blackmon, Baylor, 5-11, 195, 4.59. Well-built, hard hitter
who will probably play SS because he lacks the speed for CB. Around the
ball a lot but can be beaten outside by speed WRs. Finished senior
season strong, intercepted 8 passes.
Ben Smith, Georgia, 5-11, 185, 4.45. Really moved up with fine
senior season and combine workouts. Played CB and FS, and could be used
at either spot. Prefers S.
Alton Montgomery, Houston, 6-0, 200, 4.56. Big hitter, capable of
intimidating receivers. Plays like extra LB sometimes. Coverage skills
need improving but has the makings of a good SS.
Harlon Barnett, Michigan State, 5-11, 190, 4.55. Played CB, FS and
SS in college. A little small for S and may lack cover skills for CB,
but has fine range and agility. Could fit in well on nickel and dime
packages until he's ready to start.

Hodson was a 4-year starter at LSU. The Tigers had 3 great seasons
while he there and faltered badly when he was a senior. He was
fine but the team around him was awful. Tough kid, good arm. I'm
personally not convinced that he will be the QB of the future, but
no one felt Steve Grogan would develop the way he did either.

I honestly don't know why McMurtry lasted so long. I know we had

year. But I also believe that if a team drafted Harris, and was
patient, they'd have a gem in a few years ....

Can somebody give me some info on Lamar Lathon of UH ? He's a ILB
drafted by the Oilers, but it seems that the Oilers could have used
a impact OLB even more ... I guess that this was one of those "best
    player available" picks ....

The raiders took Harris in the 12th round.

91.193Way to sell the draft "agents"RSST6::RIGGENBiking with BurleyTue Apr 24 1990 11:225
Only 18 out of the 38 juniors were taken in the draft this year. The deal is
these guys give up their senior yr of eligibility. This means that less than
50% of the younsters fooled by the agents actually got picked up.

I'm sure they'll all go back to school in order to earn their
    dug-rees anyhow!

Yo Mid - Here's the info on Lathon according to Buchsbaum:

    ILB-OLB Lamar Lathon

    Vitals: 6-3, 238, 4.53 before surgery, Houston

Notes: Outstanding hurdler in high school. Prop 48 casualty in 1986.
Late-season starter in '87. Starting outside linebacker in '88.
Injured in an auto accident in July '89. Suffered a fractured and
dislocated sternum. Missed opener but came back to start the second
game at middle linebacker. Injured right knee (tore anterior cruciate
ligament and cartilage) in practice the following week and had
    reconstructive surgery.

Positives: (Before surgery) Big, strong and vry fast, with good
athletic ability. Very aggresive and nasty. Can fly to the ball.
Excellent range in pursuit. Can stack the run and shed blockers. Has
the speed to run with backs on coverage. Shows flashes as a blitzer.
Can play any LB position and is big enough to play down on passing
    downs.

Negatives: Very limited experience and is coming off major knee
surgery. Inconsistent. Takes false steps. Will bite on fakes.
Overreacts. Overzealous and hot-headed at times. Needs to develop and
refine techniques, to mature and to fully rehabilitate his knee.

Summary: Could be a super prospect if he is healthy and improves his
skills. In some ways, he reminds me of former Tennessee State LB
Waymond Bryant (4th pick in 84 draft) who also played for Jack Pardee
    when Pardee coached the Bears.

    Live from Charger Central....

91.196Oilers still need to land either a big-play LB or DBLUNER::BROOKSNazz 5, DrM 3 = How low can I go ? ...Tue Apr 24 1990 12:0754

Sounds like the impact player the Oilers need at OLB. The type of
    guy teams run away from.

> Negatives: Very limited experience and is coming off major knee
> surgery.

Oh joy ! :-( The guy trashed his *ACL* ?! How many people come back
100% from that injury in any sport, much less football !

> Inconsistent. Takes false steps. Will bite on fakes.

OK, good coaching can take car of that.

> Overreacts. Overzealous and hot-headed at times. Needs to develop and
> refine techniques, to mature and to fully rehabilitate his knee.

He'll fit right in with Dishman eh ? :-)

All in all, I've got to wonder about this pick. ACL injuries are
no laughing matter. That's *major* surgery, of the Bernard King/Danny
Manning/ Ron Harper variaty. It helps that he's young, which means
a better chance at 95% recovery (doctors say that your knee can
NEVER be the same again after an ACL operation).

I've got to believe that :

    1) The Oilers could have gotten Lathon a little later in the draft.
    2) Pardee made this pick because he knows hime from college, which
    can be good an bad.
    3) The Oilers could have packaged their number 1 and a RB and moved
up to get McCants or Seau.

I'll wait and see on this pick.

    BTW, Thanks a lot Glenn.

91.202Major Harris never expects to be draftedJUPITR::MOKCharles P. MokThu Apr 26 1990 13:3980
(From Clarinews)

Subject: Major Harris says he never expected to get drafted

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Major Harris, selected in the final round of the
NFL draft, Tuesday said he was only surprised that he was drafted at
all.
Harris nearly led West Virginia to a national title as a sophomore
and finished among the top five Heisman Trophy candidates the last two
years, but was the 19th quarterback selected. The Los Angeles Raiders
spent the 317th pick of the 331-selection draft on him.
Harris said he is sure he can play in the NFL, but sensed a lot of
doubts among the 28 teams.
``I didn't think I would get drafted, I could just tell,'' he said.
``I never got a phone call from an NFL team in my life.
``It's kind of ironic, a guy up for the Heisman two years in a row,
who they said did everything, could get all this negative press all at
once ... that he couldn't make it. After three years of starting there,
all I heard was I don't belong.''
NFL scouts say Harris' style is better suited to the wide open
Canadian Football League, where he might end up. The British Columbia
Lions own his CFL rights.
Harris applied for the NFL draft as a junior. He was the second
player in NCAA history to pass for 5,000 yards and run for 2,000.
``I did that in three years and if I stayed another year, I would
have done something else that no one's ever done,'' he said. ``I knew it
wasn't going to be based on ability but it's so funny -- I'm getting the
most publicity. If I wasn't good enough to go higher than 12th, then how
come everyone's talking about it so much?''
The Mountaineers lost to Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl following
the 1988 season when Harris was a sophomore and finished fifth in
Heisman voting. He was third last year.
``He took a team that was not even on the map and made them TV's
darlings,'' said his agent, Ed Abram.
Before the draft, all Harris heard was negative. He is considered
short for an NFL quarterback at 6-foot and his powerful arm was knocked
as inaccurate. The freewheeling that made him so exciting in college
makes him a liability among structured NFL offenses.
``All I know is you give him the ball and points go on the board,''
West Virginia Coach Don Nehlen said.
Despite that endorsement, Nehlen and Harris have been perceived to
be at odds. Harris and Abram said they heard that Nehlen gave NFL scouts
poor reports on Harris. Nehlen denies that, and Harris and Abram say it
doesn't matter.
``A lot of people say he hurt me but I didn't dwell on it,'' Harris
said. ``He's probably mad because I didn't stay.''
Harris says lasting until the 12th round did not shake his
confidence. But he takes no solace in getting drafted by the Raiders, a
team known for taking chances on players other NFL teams pass on.
Also, the Raiders' Art Shell is the only black head coach in a
league that is known for trying to turn black college quarterbacks into
defensive backs and receivers.
``I don't look at it like a last chance -- what difference does it
make what round a guy goes in -- and I don't look at it like I need a
team that gives last chances,'' he said. ``I kind of look at it like
whoever wants to win will give me a chance and whoever gives me a
chance, will win.
``It was probably a smart move on their part -- they got the best
available player in the draft on the last round.''
Even British Columbia Lions spokesman Doug Griffing said ``We're
aware of their (Raiders) history.
	``Of the 28, they're more apt to give a 12th-round choice a shot
than other teams.''
Harris said he had no contact with anyone from the NFL until
Raiders Coach Art Shell phoned Monday night to tell him he was drafted.
Harris said he would be happy to go the Raiders' mini-camp but expects
to play in Canada.
``If I had dreams, it was to play football,'' said the Pittsburgh
native who grew up a Cleveland Browns fan. ``It was never for what
team.''
The Raiders would hold Harris' NFL rights for four years if he
plays in Canada, but it sounds like Shell is keeping an open mind.
``All this guy has done is win,'' Shell said. ``He stayed on the
board for a long time and we felt this guy was deserving to go higher
than we picked him. We feel he is a quality individual who knows how to
win football games. He's a winner, he has escape ability and a strong
arm.''
Abram said he was expecting to talk with the Raiders soon and in
negotiations with the Lions was looking for $1.5 million over three
years.

I am not saying that Harris being black has anything to do with it, but
in a few years we may very very very very likely see that Harris turns
out to be a much much much much better player than Jeff George. Then,
Harris will be the one laughing, George will be the one laughing too

Why didn't Dee Dowis get drafted?

Here's a college quarterback that runs and passes for record yardage,
leads his team into the top twenty in the nation, then draft day and
what? Nothing. He'd be out of the Airforce in a few years, but does
   anybody care? NoooOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo!

Very suspicious that he is a media hero one day, and suddenly nobody is
interested in him come draft day. I think it's because he's white.

I think it was because :

    1) He's a wishbone QB who throws maybe 8 passes a game. He *ran*
for record yardage, but passing ? heh heh heh ...

    and

    2) He played for the Air Force. Dee is going to be fying missions
over Beruit (or something) the next four years.

    re George,

Until a month ago, Andre Ware was the best QB in the nation. HAnds
down, no questions asked. He had the numbers to back it up. Then
supposedly, his arm wasn't as strong a peole thought (SAY WHAT ?),
he played in a R&S (didn't stop Lomax or Kelly, and quite a few
NFL teams have elements of it in their offense) ect etc ect ...

Then all of a sudden Jeff George becomes The Messiah .... give me
    a break.

George might be good, but Indy gave up too much for him. They fell
for the shitck hook, line, and sinker ....

    Go Andre !!!!

Actually, there were questions about Andre Ware for much longer
than the last few weeks. I don't know if either George or Ware
will be much more than average. I believe since Ware played in
a run n shoot, it was questioned about whether or not he could play
a more conservative style. hey, he may be the next Joe Montana
    - or the next Sonny Sixkiller. One thing you have to remember is
that quarterbacks are rated highly on the type of game they played
in college. The Run n Shoot is not yet, thankfully, a full fledged
pro offense - just like the wishbone and option aren't. QBs from
those programs usually have more questions than those from pro set
offenses. And it ain't just QB's. Look at Tom Rathman. 5 career
catches in college. Had a 'no hands/bad hands' rap. he caught
70+ passes last year. I could go on and on.

Has anyone mentioned or heard in here what Ditka and the Bears were
    doing on draft day?

From what I heard, Ditka was calling the perspective pick and insisting he
verbally agree to sign a contract before training camp or else the Bears
would not draft him. Ditka wanted no holdouts in camp. In the first
round, he wanted Ray Agnew out of NC State. Agnew said he would not
verbally agree to a contract, so the Bears took Marc Carrier out of USC
who said he would sign a contract. Carrier was not a considered a
first-rounder, but since he agreed to sign, Ditka took him.

I have mixed feelings about this. Is Ditka hurting the team by not
drafting the best available, or is he helping the team by drafting
rookies who will be there from day one and not cry over a few thousand
    in a $100+ thousand contract?

    Just in case you're serious...

If I remember correctly, Dowis is slated for pilot training. The
commitment for AF pilots is now 9 years (including pilot training) as
opposed to the 5 years that Staubach, McConkey, and other service
academy graduates have put in. 9 years is a long time to wait.

Lasted I knew Claybone, the commitment was 5 years, starting after
flight school if any.

The interesting story with Phil McConkey was that Conks was a chopper
pilot. After his training (fergit how long) he was assigned to sea
duty. Well, here's this pilot who never gets airsick, but he gets
wicked seasick.

So the Navy futzed around, and after four years of his commitment
it was generally agreed that he'd be excused from the last year
of it due to his seasickness. He had a tryout with the Giants
and made the team.

Then the Navy decided he'd have to do his fifth year. So, back in
the Navy for another year. Following that, he tried out with
the Giants again and made it again.

Now, he's running for Congress....

    re: last few.

The flight training commitment in the AF (don't know about the Navy)
has gone up a couple of times; in the late 1970s it went up to 6 or 7
years after flight training versus the previous 5-year commitment, and
my classmates had to all sign statements that they would accept the new
commitment length even though their original service contracts stated
otherwise (one guy sued the AF and was able to hold them to the
    original service commitment).  A couple of years ago, it went up again;
last year, when AFA's John Steed was drafted by Dallas, it was said
that he probably wouldn't play for Dallas since unlike Staubach, who
had a 5-year commitment, Steed would be tied up for 9 years with pilot
training and his initial AF flight commitment.

FWIW...there is talk about increasing it again, but it will probably
    never fly (pun intended).
91.220GENRAL::WADEonly weenies use compose characters!Thu Apr 26 1990 19:546
In 1979 when I was considering the AFA, it was 2 years of flight
school + 5 years committment. For non-pilots it was just 5 years.
Now it's up to 7 after flight school? Geez, I'll bet that may
    hurt their recruiting.........

Not surprising, considering several key scenes and episodes in George's
career: his mom accompanying him going off the field on a cart in a
game as a freshman in Purdue amidst boos from the home crowd; his dad
    saying all the words for him when he decided to leave Purdue for Miami;
blaming his freshman mistakes and failures on his line, his receivers,
his fans, never himself; fleeing from facing the possibility of an
unfamiliar offense with Fred Akers (after he left it was a relief not a
    disappointment among Purdue players and fans, despite his talents);
fleeing from Miami after spending a few months with Steve Walsh, Craig
Erickson and Jimmy Johnson, who refused to commit to George
(correctly); the list goes on and on. They guy has yet to face up to
any adversity without running away from it.

was scoffed up by the NJ Generals while being drafted in the 7th

Take a look at this week's SI for a less-than-otpimistic article on
Jeff George. Apparently, the key thing that sold the scouts on George
was his performance in three workouts, 2 indoors where he threw a
total of about 300 ball and one outdoors where he threw 30 passes.
The #1 pick was sealed when they asked George to air out his arm
and see how far he could throw. With a receiver starting 25
yards beyond the line, George threw an 81 yard strike...

SI mentions that George has a history of not finishing what he
starts, blames others when things go bad, and being akin to Dan Fouts
in terms of mobility.... I quick drop, after that, forget it.
Somthing about the look in his eye makes me wonder about him,
though. I can't get Tony Eason out of my mind.

St Douglas of the Heights (tm) was the 11th round pick of the Rams,

pick of the Generals, because they had the automatic rights to all

No offense intended... Dan Fouts is probably the QB I most enjoyed

And I also thought Chuck Muncie was the best RB I ever saw play... when

Fouts was the toughest sonofagun I ever saw (along with Pastorini),
