    I was amazed, when I saw the standings from friday's paper, at how many
    different hockey conferences there are.  Then I realized, why did
    Merrimack join the Hockey East instead of moving up to the ECAC Div. I
    (from ECAC Div. II)?  And, why the heck is Harvard in ECAC Div. I
    instead of competing against the other "big boys" across the Charles?
    
    Personally, I can't see teams like Merrimack and ULowell being
    successful in the Hockey East, especially when they'd be average, at
    best, in the ECAC Div. I.

    Hello, my name is Mark Belforti and I am new to this conference.
    
    I was wondering if anyone out there has any predictions on who is
    going to win this years Beanpot Hockey Tournament?
    
    For those who aren't from this area, the Beanpot Hockey
    Tournament is a tournament played on the first two
    Mondays in February at the Boston Garden. There are
    four teams that are involved in it. They are as follows:
    
    1. Northeastern University - From Hockey East
    2. Boston College - Also From Hockey East
    3. Boston University - Hockey East
    4. Harvard University - ECAC Div 1
    
    These games count in the teams overall records but do not count
    as divisional games.
    
    This years tournament is the 38th contest between these two teams.
    Here is the schedule for first set of games on Monday, Feb 5th.
    
    6:00 PM - Boston College vs. Boston University
    9.00 PM - Northeastern vs. Harvard
    
    The following week, the games are as follows:
    
    5:00 PM - Consolation Game
    8:00 PM - Championship Game
    
    Here are my predictions. Boston College 6 Bu 4
                             Northeastern 4 Harvard 3
    
                             Harvard 7 BU 3   Consolation Game
                             NU 6      BC 4   Championship Game
    
    I have to go with the Huskies as I graduated from there.
    
    I will be going to see both games and have good seats. I will be
    sitting in Promenade Sec W Row B.
    
    I would be interested to see what other people think of this
    event.
    
    Here is a triva question?
    
    1. How many times has Northeastern won the Beanpot? Please give
       the amount of times and years won.

    Here's a sure-fire prediction:
    
    BC won't win (i.e they'll choke)

    RE: BC 
    
    Typically BC starts very quickly at the beginning of the year and fades
    around the third week of January. This tends to continue through the 
    end of the year. Recent BC teams have built impressive won-loss
    differentials by their performances at the beginning of the year. Last
    years overtime tie with Minnesota in November, and the last minute loss
    in Overtime to Harvard at Harvard come to mind.
    
    This year things have been different. BC struggled early. Eight games
    into the season they were 3-5 having lost twice to NU, once each
    to Providence, BU and Michigan State. BC went to Maine for a two game
    series, blew them out at home for the first time since 1986, and has
    not looked back.
    
    History says the typical BC team will not get past the first round.
    The only problem is, this is not a typical BC team. They were overated
    at the start of the season, openned slowly, but have developed very
    well. 
    
    What is more important at this point to those of us that follow the
    Eagles are the upcoming Hockey East games with Providence and Maine;
    games that will probably determine who will draw Merrimack and Lowell
    in the upcoming Hockey East Playoffs. Having seen both the teams in
    the last week or so at the Forum, neither one of them will be a
    pushover.
    
    BTW: Have Merrimack and NU played their three games this year yet? 
    
    My predictions:
                               Who really cares in Madison or E.Lansing anyway 
    BC 6	Harvard 5     |		BC - Harvard |Lot of bad blood with 
    BU 4        NU 2                    NU - BU      | both these games

    I read in Saturday's paper that Providence is the 2nd rated team in the
    country.
    
    I hate to ask, but how'd Merrimack do against Providence on Saturday?

    Unfortunately, Providence won I think.
    
    I saw the same thing in the paper, it makes no sense to me. I think it
    is their overall record that has them rated so highly. I wasn't all
    that impressed with them when they came to Conte Forum the beginning of
    January. A couple of late goals made the score close, but on the whole
    they didn't show too much. They return on Feb. 14th.
    
    I thought that Michigan State and Minnesota were both better than
    Providence.
    
    In the FWIW category, it would not surprise me one bit if Merrimack
    catches BC on Friday night. BC will be looking ahead to the Beanpot,
    and if Merrimack can put together three periods of hockey the way they
    played the second period on the 19th, they can win.

	Some pretty entertaining hockey in last night beanpot games.  Both
the teams I was pulling for lost.  An old neighbor plays for BC, freshman
defensemen (crowley).  BU's forechecking won the game.  

	Havard should have won their game easily, Northeastern's defense
stinks!  They were standing around the whole game.

	I don't watch that much college hockey and was realy surprised at
how entertaining the games were.  Some good goaltending, solid checking,
clean, fun hockey.  Can't wait for the finals.

    Even though in terms of points that might be the case, IMO a win should
    count for more in terms of the standings. 
    
    Also, what happens at the end of the season if the situation stays the
    same?  You can't decide it on whether C comes before H!!

    	Actually, I think it was listed that way because there was a
    tie in the amount of points (in which case, two ties is as good
    as one win...  A team at 1-1-0 has the same amount of points as a
    team at 0-0-2).  I'm not sure what the tiebreaker would be in this
    case, but logically it should be the team with the most wins first,
    IMO.

    I went to see NU at Lowell last night.  Neither team is going anywhere
    and it showed, except for one thing.  NU came out flying and scored
    4 goals in the first 10 minutes, including 2 goals 9 seconds apart
    about 5 minutes in.  Lowell held on and got 3 in the middle period
    but NU got 2 late to ice a 6-3 win.  Also last night, Providence
    beat BU 4-3 and on Tuesday, BC beat UNH 5-3.

    Damn!  Looks like my Merrimack Warriors have wrapped up the bottom

    Why did they ever move up to Div. I?  Their coach was quoted as saying,
    "They look like a JV hockey team."  It's pretty sad.  I used to like

    If BC wins tonight, they will win the regular season Hockey East Title
    regardless of what happens next Tuesday night at BU.
    
    BC's play-off games for the first round (best two out of three) are as

    Last Saturday nights game with Maine was probably one of the best games
    I've seen this year. If I had to guess who will be in the Garden for

    guess it will be another one goal affair that could go either way. It

    The problem with the measle outbreak at Maine should be settled this
    afternoon. Personally, I would be against letting them play at home for
    the remainder of the playoffs. On the other hand, they are a health
    hazzard if they are  allowed to come down and play at Hockeyfest. 
    
    We'll see what "creative solutions" the state health officials, the
    various AD's, and the two league officials have. 
    
     

    Judging from past outbreaks, I'd say that they won't finish the
    regular season (or are they all done?) and during games that they
    play, there will be a quarintine in the arena.  Those born before
    1963 (I think) and those who have very recently have a measles 
    shot will be allowed to attend.  Others won't.

    In the final regular season games in Hockey East last night, BU
    beat BC 4-2 and Merrimack beat Lowell in OT, 10-9.

    while host Brown beat Vermont 7-5 and will be at RPI in the

    ECAC draw for the Semifinals this weekend at the Boston Garden:
    
    RPI vs Cornell
    Colgate vs St. Lawrence or Clarkson (forget which)

    If memory serves me correctly, Clarkson eliminated St Lawrence. I 
    would expect the ECAC to take a financial bath on this weekends games
    at Boston Garden. With Harvard out, there is no local draw for this
    tournament. The fact that there will be a Hockey East Game on Friday
    night, either at BC or BU (depending on tonights outcome at Kelly Rink)
    will also not help. 
    
    As an aside, Merrimack played a super game yesterday afternoon against
    BC. How they  didn't win more Hockey East Games is a mystery to me.
    They dominated all aspects of the game, and make no mistake, they will
    be tough tonight.
    
    FWIW: Friday, Schofield (sp) from Merrimack blasted a shot off of Sandy
    Galuppo's mask with about 18 minutes to go in the third period.  In
    came La Grand who stoned the Warriors the rest of the way. IMHO had
    Galuppo not been hit, and stayed in the game, I believe that Merrimack
    might have won Friday's game as well, and this series would have ended
    yesterday afternoon. 
    
    I see good things in the future for Merrimack. They've played better
    than BC in this series, at least so far. Tonight La Grand will play,
    and I would expect BC to win this one, assuming they survive the first
    10 minutes of the first period, where Merrimack will try to take it to
    them.  
    
    We'll see....It should be fun.... The faceoff is at 7.

    Just one question.  What is Merrimack doing in *any* kind of playoff
    or tournament after something like a 3-14 record?  Are the regular

    The games really are a joke in Hockey East. You play 21 games to
    be "seeded" in the tournament. It was not like this when there were
    only 7 teams, but when the league expanded, everyone gets in with an
    "equal" change.
    
    FWIW: Maine pulled one of the truly classless moves on Saturday night
    beating Lowell 16-0. I have no great love for Lowell, but Maine really
    is bush-league with this score.

    I agree, there's no way they should be in any type of playoff within
    their league.  The Hockey East playoffs should consist of no more than
    the top 4 teams - that's it.  Actually, I think that #2 and #3 should
    play each other, then the winner to take on the regular season champs.
    
    If you're the type of hockey fan that can't wait for a good fight, go
    to next year's 1st ULowell-UMaine matchup.  Should be a bloodbath!

    Actually way to go UMAINE.  ULOWELL deserves it.  They have never,
    ever been a 'class' act - 'specially with Reilly the classless coach.
    Also, Lowell did their share of embarrassing opponents when they
    were beating up Div. 2 schools.  16-0 = too bad they missed one
    of the extra points...

    It's unfortunate that you feel that way. I don't think that Maine has
    much to offer in the sportsmanship class either. The nonsense that
    Walsh pulled with the CCM logos when they played at BC a few weeks ago
    was pure bull. 
    
    Whatever Lowell pulled in Division II is in the past. I, for one, don't
    like them much either, but feel that there isn't any place for "running
    up the score". 
    
    I for one, will be in Tully Forum next year, and I can tell you right
    now, Maine will Not win that one.....either the fight or the game. 
    
    I'm also going to enjoy BU abusing Maine....either Friday night or next
    Sunday afternoon. Either way the "Blue crew"  will get it. 
    
    It won't be easy.....but I think BC will survive tonight.

    I agree 100%, JD.  Coach Reilly has always been a classless act.  I
    used to follow ULowell in their Div. II glory days in the early '80s
    and was happy to see them win, but wasn't too proud of it.  (I started
    my Continuing Ed college career at ULowell before transferring to
    Merrimack).  But, UMaine's version is also classless and only fuels a 
    bitter and hate-filled rivalry (dirty play, fighting) rather than a
    purely competitve one.
    
    I wonder - what did ULowell do to provoke the blowout, or was it that
    bad of a mismatch that particular day?

    Through the years, ULOWELL has accumulated a lot of IOU's - and
    I think teams will pay them back anytime they can.  Maine used to
    be a real lousy team, so they are probably still paying back past
    debts.  It may not be right, but what goes around comes around.
    
    Ulowell - I have witnessed a Ulowell player slashing a cheerleader
    with his hockey stick.  I witnessed their 'captain' sucker punch
    a goalie as the teams started the skate around.   etc, etc.
    
    Hawk, I'd lovve to see Merrimack beat BC - love to see another talented
    BC team choke.  Year in, year out, they have the best talent in
    hockey east - and year in, year out, they choke during the playoffs.
    
    

    I supposed you're right about the IOU's, JD.  Actually, I don't know
    why I sound like I'm defending them.  I, too, got a chuckle seeing the
    score in my paper yesterday morning which, btw, said 17-0.  Evidently,
    my paper didn't realize that an extra point was taken away by the
    ClemsonRefs(tm) after reviwing the game films.....  :-)

    BC over Merrimack, 8-5.  According to last night's 11pm sports segment,
    Merrimack played them pretty tough, except for the 1st period where BC
    took a 4-1 lead (I think).  Merrimack owned the 2nd period, and the 3rd
    was pretty even.  BC's 8th goal was an open-netter.
    
    This game was typical of Merrimack's 1st season with the big boys of
    the Hockey East - close, but no cigar.  One thing that Merrimack showed
    throughout the season, is playing with all their heart.  Combine that
    with a better draw at the high school talent pool in the next several
    years, and they'll be winners again.

    Merrimack played  well last night, but the score is deceiving.
    Merrimack got two goals on essentially two BC defensive screw-ups in
    front of the BC net. They played well, but in the end a more talented
    team did take over, and wore them down. Bc came out in the third
    period, and quickly extended the lead. They really never looked back.
    
    Marty McInnis had a career night with five goals. I would say that the
    four best players on the ice for the three games without question were:

    1. Gosellin (Merrimack Goalie)
    2. Scott LaGrand (BC Goalie)
    3. Andy Heinze (Merrimack) yes, he is Steve Heinze's older brother
    4. Marty McInnis (BC)
    
    Without question Andy Heinze put on an impressive offensive display on
    Sunday, and was rock solid the other two nights.
    
    The scene that I'll remember most about the series is the one of the
    two Heinze brothers alone at  center ice after the game ended
    congratulating each other as the Merrimack and BC crowd gave them both
    a standing ovation. It really is what college hockey is all about, not
    the classless Maines of the world.
    
    In response to an earlier note, the roof caved in on Lowell early in
    the first period. From what I've heard, they gave up, and Walsh decided
    to stick it to them. We'll see what happens Friday night. BU has not
    won in Maine for years. I think they are due. 
    
    Most BC fans, like myself, would like to see BU win up there. All things 
    being equal, BC should eliminate UNH, thus setting up a winner take all
    game with BU on Sunday afternoon. Both teams on Sunday are almost
    assured NCAA bids so it would really be for bragging rights, and the
    top seed in the east. Oh sorry Colgate fans, I realize your team has a
    better record, but you won't survive the Garden this weekend. My guess
    is the Clarkson Golden Knights are going to smoke you.

    Ah, a BC fan, that explains it.  No BC fans have ever done 'classless
    acts', I guess, nor have any of the spoiled little darlings that
    play for the underachieving Eagles.   BC has never been one to not
    mind rubbing it in when given the chance - I wouldn't be quick to
    condemn Maine.

    Ah, sorry friend, the record is clean with BC rubbing it in as far as I
    know, at least in Hockey. The only thing that comes close that I can 
    think of was a Boston State game in the early '70's that wound up
    around 17-2 or so. BC used all three goalies, and removed them from the
    schedule.
    
    The situation with Maine is somewhat different, as most of the scoring
    came from Maines first two lines, and if the paper is to be believed,
    King played the entire game for Maine.
    
    What many teams do, I know BC does this, is put in their third goalie,
    and at least give the other team a chance. BC did this 8-9 times this
    year when the scores were half of what the Maine scores were. In a
    couple of the early games that BC was out of it, opponents did
    likewise. Maine will get theirs someday, just like SMU will nail
    Houston for the football fiasco this year. 
    
    Being a BC fan has nothing to do with how I feel. The record with Maine
    is very clear over the past six years that they have been in the
    league. BC/Maine has developed into one of the best series in all of
    college hockey.  Each has won a Hockey East Championship at the expense
    of the other. It could be they are headed for a third showdown.
    
    FWIW: I guess sportsmanship is not some of your strong points. Some of
    you wrongfully assume that I'll defend BC to the death. Sorry guys, I
    never have, and never will. I've been a season hockey ticket holder for
    20+ years. I seen some of the greatest college teams in history play.
    Sorry guys, but what Maine did, wasn't right. If some of you have
    "excess baggage" from the days when Lowell was Division 2, I feel sorry
    for you. Those days are long gone, and you are going to have to live
    with it. I for one, share the outrage expressed by many over the
    actions of Maine, just as I did over the excesses expressed in Hockey
    East "ugliest fight ever" that between Northeastern and Merrimack.
    (BTW: Northeastern never did recover from the actions of that night.) 
    Fans who have watched college hockey for a long time, do not condone 
    what happened, regardless of how they may personally feel about one 
    of the schools.

    To finish up on this.....If I implied the Maine fans as classless, that
    certainly was not my intent. They are the most loyal in all of Hockey
    East. I think if I am not mistaken, my comments  were directed towards
    Coach Walsh, who seems to be  taking  the brunt of the critisms
    surrounding the 16-0 fiasco. 
    
    It is hard to believe that a hard core "Blue Crew " fan really enjoyed
    watching Lowell get pasted that badly. "What goes around, comes
    around", as they say.

    Interesting.  You've been a BC ticket holder for 20 years, and claim
    you've never seen BC run up the score, or any implied classless
    actions.  YOu say you don't imply classlessness upon the UMaine
    fans, yet you say in your note that some of us noters who don't
    agree with you are lacking in sportmanship.  Pretty interesting
    to judge folks you haven't met.  Running up the score isn't the
    only classless act one can commit in college hockey - taunting,
    cheap shops (remember Ed Raseo (sp) of BC - one of the dirtiest
    players I ever saw..), fans can be classless, and I've seen almost
    all the Boston area teams have their share of classless behavior
    (except maybe Harvard). 
    
    16-0.  Is in any worse than 11-1, or 12-2, or 8-0,  or 9-1?  Not
    really.  And you end your note with "what comes around goes around",
    which is what some of us said in regards to why Maine did this to
    Lowell.  The fact that you consider Maine such a rival doesn't have
    anything to do with this, does it?

    tell me you have never seen a game at Harvard, and have very limited
    experience watching college hockey in general. Harvard, like many of
    their Ivy League cohorts, have a rather unique way of taunting the

    Well, you are wrong on most counts.  I made the comment about Harvard
    because I've only been to two games at harvard, therefore don't
    consider myself an expert on the fans there.
    
    As for your comment that I "have very limited experience watchin
    college hockye in general" is totally off base.  I went to hundreds
    of games in the greater Boston area over a span of 12 years, as
    well as seeing Army up at West Point numerous times, and some smaller
    local schools in the New York Area.         
    
    I will add this about the Harvard fans when I've seen them (the
    two times at Harvard, the numerous times at the Beanpot, and various
    other teams as the opposing team) that at least there taunts are
    clever, and are generally no in the "xxxx sucks, xxxx sucks" genre.

Yes, JD, I would agree as to the highly literate nature of
Ivy League cheers.

Whilst spending my time elevating my consciouness, expanding my
powers of rational thought, and generally fulfilling my 
appetite for knowledge in my own collegiate days (Gaudeamus Igatur
and all that), I had a compatriot who's older sibling had
matriculated at that bastion of Ivy-Leaguedom (and Jody Foster), Yale.

From this sibling we learned a plethora of highly sophisticated, 
yet humorous in an erudite, cerebral sort of manner, cheers.
Unfortunately for this discussion, they revolve around football,
but if I may, for the enhancement of the audience's noting pleasure,
I'll illustrate my hypothesis:

	Whilst on defense:  Pursue them, pursue them, make them
		            relinquish the spheroid.

	Also:		    Arrest them, arrest them, dash them
			    to the terrestrial surface.

	And finally:	    Do not surrender the non-dimensional
			    geometrical figure extended through
			    two separate points!

    Tournament bids will come out at 11PM (I guess EST) on Monday, March
    12th. This is after the completion of the league playoffs. One of the
    12 bids must go to an independent. I would guess the following teams
    would get bids:
    
    BC, BU, Maine, Colgate, Clarkson, RPI, Michigan State, Minnesota, and
    Wisconsin.  
    
    Should be interesting.

    re ECAC:  When we got our tickets from the Gah-den box office
    Tuesday, they said seats were "limited" whatever that means.

    One of the funniest things I ever saw at a hockey game was when
    Merrimack started with their tennis ball thing.  Somebody must have
    had an 'in' with a sporting goods company and was able to gather
    a huge supply of green tennis balls and pass them around before
    the game.  When Merrimack scored a goal, the opposing goalie was
    bombarded by literally hundreds of tennis balls.  So what happens
    then?  They scoop them up and throw them over the boards to be
    'recycled' after the next goal.
    
    Is this classless? Yup.  Unsportsmanlike? Of the highest order!
    
    Was it funny? Only to Merrimack fans.

    Without question the final 4 minutes of the BC-UNH game was not for the
    faint of heart. UNH had gone ahead 4-2 midway through the third period.
    The score was 2-2 after two periods.
    
    BC scored a power play goal at the 18:14 mark. I think the scoring went
    Emma from Heinze. Ted Crowley clanked one off the crossbar at the 19
    minute mark. The UNH goalie Szurn turned around, and dropped to his
    knees looking at the crossbar. Play resumed with BC goalie Scott
    LaGrand going to the bench at the 19:10 mark. As he reached the bench,
    Ted Crowley (he of the crossbar set) let one go from the point that
    went straight in. I don't remember who got the assists, but it was
    Crowley at  19:14.  Steve Heinze broke in with two UNH defensemen
    draped all over him at the 19:55 mark and his shot went wide as time
    ran out in regulation. UNH essentially went off the ice between periods
    a broken team.
    
    UNH came out for the overtime with no emotion. BC carried the play. At
    2:26 Guerin scored on a rebound from Franzoza, and someone else, forgot
    who, sorry (Brown maybe). Szurn made the initial two stops, but the
    UNH defense was standing around, and failed to clear. Guerin had an
    open net, and didn't miss.
    
    Guerin's goal capped a furious BC comeback which carried  over to last
    nights game with Maine.
    
    

    RPI-Cornell wasn't really for the faint of heart either... RPI
    was up 3-2 with Cornell taking the play to RPI when a penalty
    shot was issued. (First in ECAC semis/final history?)  The
    Cornell player (on his birthday) got stuffed, RPI went on
    to win the game.... too bad they didn't win last night, but
    we should get an NCAA bid...

    I'm very surprised RPI didn't make it, given RPI's higher regular season
    finish, their winning 8 out of 9 down the stretch and their great
    performance against Colgate in the title game.  CCHA:  Michigan
    State, Bowling Green, Lake Superior.  I thought Michigan might get
    the nod over Bowling Green, seeing that Michigan won the consolation
    game.  WCHA:  Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota.  No surprise here.
    Independent:  Alaska-Anchorage, no surprise here, they were a top
    ranked team all year and the NCAA requires at least one independent
    in the tournament.

Clarkson over RPI?  What a rip off.  I can see Clarkson making the NCAA's
if RPI did.  The Engineers were hot, winning 9 of 11, and playing right
with Colgate the entire game.  They finished 2nd in the regular season
and the tournament, and get snubbed.

    	He's gonna be wearing black and gold next year.  He's just
    	a junior but has most of his credits and is eligible to
    	leave school. He'll win the ECAC scoring title but this
    	year's Hobey Baker award will probably go to Greg Brown
    	the BC defenseman.  While the Bruins have the rights to
    	Juneau, the Sabres have the rights to Brown.
    
    	I'm glad that Juneau is already in the habit of scoring
    	game winning goals in the Garden.  Maybe he'll play on the

    All the home teams won this weekend (Maine over Bowling Green, Lake
    Superior over Alaska-Anchorage, Minnesota over Clarkson and BU over
    North Dakota) though it took BU 3 games to eliminate the Sioux.
    
    Minnesota is at BC, Maine is at Wisconsin, BU is at Michigan State
    and Lake Superior is at Colgate in the quarterfinals this weekend.
    
    Plattsburgh State is at Wisconsin-Stevens Point this weekend for
    the Division 3 national title.

    Well in the FWIW class here goes:
    
    BU-MSU (MSU in 3)
    I think BU will win Friday night, only because of the  13 day lay-off.
    East Lansing is a tough place to play. State is faster than BU, but BU
    is on a roll. BU has beaten State once this season in Boston at the
    beginning off the year. If BU is to win, Cashman (BU Freshmen Goalie)
    has to play well enough to take the big MSU crowd out of the game.
    
    Maine-Wisc (Wisconsin in 2)
    Outside of Alfond Arena, where the Bears are something like 24-2-1,
    Maine is a mere mortal. Maine has strong goaltending, but their defense
    is suspect. They "rattle" badly when a big crowd gets into the game,
    and the Wisconsin crowd is the best in hockey. Wisconsion has too much
    fire power, with strong goaltending. Even though I'd like to see the
    Bears survive, I think the "fat lady is warming up".
    
    BC-Minn (BC in 3)
    These two teams have met already once this year. BC won, but the Gopher 
    defense, and goaltending forgot to show up. Over the years, these have
    been two of the most evenly matched teams in terms of strength, and
    style of play. There isn't much to choose between them. Keys for both
    teams is goaltending. LeGrand (BC freshmen goalie) has to play strongly
    all three nights for BC to win. I'd expect 3, one goal games with BC
    "surviving".
    
    Colgate-Lake Sup. (Colgate in 3)
    Don't know much about either on, but my gut tells me this will be
    close. Colgate struggled against both Clarkson and especially with RPI. 
    
    It all starts 7PM Friday night...   

    BC 6  Minnesota 1
    BU 5  Michigan St. 3
    
    Semifinals  3/30
    BC (28-12-1) vs Wisconsin (34-9-1)
    Colgate (30-5-1) vs BU (25-16-2)  

    Oklahoma State captured their 29th NCAA Wrestling Championship
    and their 2nd title in two years.  They had 2 individual 
    Champions.
    
    The BIG-8 takes 4 of the top 9 spots and 5 of the top 27.

    What does wrestling have to do with COLLEGE hockey... it's pretty
    clean...
    
    I guess let's go GATE!!! Since hockey least left, the ECAC has gone
    farther in the NCAA's every year than hockey least...including 2
    championships (RPI, Hah-vud).

    The only real surprise this weekend were the Terriers of BU. 
    
    FWIW: Here is what I  think is going to happen this  weekend in Detroit
    
    Colgate - BU (BU, BIG TIME)
    No contest here.....BU, big time. Cashman and the BU defense did
    exactly what they had to do to beat State, and break the Spartans
    heart. Games against Maine, BC, Michigan State, and North Dakota  this
    month  really have set up the Terriers well. They came  back from an
    opening night loss against State, to win two in a row in perhaps the
    hardest arena to be a visitor.Make no mistake about it, this is no upset, 
    in fact, it won't even be close.
    
    BC - Wisconsin (Pick 'em)
    On paper the Badgers are more seasoned, and own the country's best
    goalie. The teams met once before in December with Wisconsin winning 
    big. A carbon copy of last nights all around effort is what BC needs to 
    beat the Badgers. BC has won 8 "must win" games in the last 5 weeks 
    with LeGrand between the pipes. It goes without saying, they need a big
    effort to beat the Badgers. The big Wisconsin crowd  will need to be
    taken out of the game early. 
    
    National Championship Game Sunday
    I believe the eventual National Champion will be the team that survives
    the BC-Wisconsin game, despite the recent history of BC-BU.
    
    Should be interesting...It all starts 4:30 Friday afternoon.....

    Why BU big time?  Is this Hockey Least superiority mentality? 
    Colgate's only lost 2 or 3 games all year.  Wouldn't call this a rout
    yet.

    Only problem is......Colgate already lost to BU at home, in
    Hamilton....Ever watch BU when it counted....It's called money in the
    bank.....
    
    The ECAC teams that played the three Boston Hockey East teams
    this year for the most part had their lunch handed to them....Cornell 
    came to the Forum in January, and the game was over in the first seven 
    minutes....Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Vermont  all played  BC this year,
    and all were blown out....No wonder Colgate has a record like they do
    playing weenies like these....Merrimack would, and in some cases did,
    beat these bozos.........No, not a superior mentality, just the facts
    this year

    Yale, Brown, Dartmouth and Vermont were in the bottom half of the
    league.  That's what I would expect from one of the top seeded teams.
    None were in the top 7, from what I can remember....
    
    Sorry, I hear this attitude every year about ECAC never having every
    year, and every year they do well in the NCAA's...

    87 - Lake Superior over SLU

    1988 was North Dakota over Harvard in the semis, Michigan State
    over Minnesota and North Dakota winning the title.
    
    1986 was Michigan State over Minnesota in the semis, Harvard over
    Denver in the other (where Scott Fusco was hurt) and then State
    over Harvard in the title game.

    Lowell also won the Division 2 title in 1979, 1981 and 1982.  Merrimack

    It's good to see that both BC and BU will have a following this weekend
    in Detroit. BU has, to date, chartered six busses to make the trip. 
    
    BC sold out one charter flight, along with five busses as of last
    night. They also sold out their allotment of tickets in five hours on
    Monday. They have requested more tickets from the NCAA. I'm not sure if
    they will get them, but there should be plenty of them hanging around 
    East Lansing thanks to our Commonwealth Ave. rivals!!
    
    Should be fun.... 

    Colgate beat BU, 3-2
    Wisconsin beat BC, 2-1

    BU came out and jumped all over Colgate but could only get the two
    goals.  Colgate goalie Dave Gagnon held tough and allowed his team
    to get back into the game.  BU beat Gagnon with 15 seconds left
    but the puck hit the post and went wide.
    
    Wisconsin also got two early goals on BC and one of those was
    unfortunately mishandled by BC goalie Scott LaGrand.  Give him credit
    though, because Wisconsin could have easily scored 6.  LaGrand kept
    BC in the game but BC just couldn't generate any offense against
    a tough Badger defense.
    
    Wisconsin beat Colgate in a game that wasn't really a contest. 
    The Badgers came out flying and scored 2 in the first 3.5 minutes.
    Colgate took a lot of stupid penalties and really shot themselves
    in the foot.

    I agree with John's assessment of the games. As I stated in an earlier
    reply, the winner of the Wisconsin-BC game would win the title. No
    arguement with the outcome Friday, the Wisconsin defense  was too much.
    Had David Emma been able to tie the game in the final 10 seconds, I'm
    not sure they would have been able to get another one by the Badger
    defense. Scott LaGrand played a super game, and really cannot be
    faulted on either of the Wisconsin goals. He made so many sensational
    saves, that the second goal that rolled under his arm after the initial
    stop was made, is excusable.
    
    As for yesterday, Colgate was embarrassed, and there isn't a lot more
    that can be said. 
    
    That's it for this year.....It was a great one. Next year at the Forum
    should include 2 visits each from Maine, Northeastern and BU, plus visits 
    from Wisconsin, Clarkson, St. Lawrence and road trips to Michigan State, 
    and Minnesota. Should be fun.

    Blown out, Friday....Blown out, Sunday....What's the difference....They
    showed what they were made of....Play a steady diet of WCHA and Hockey
    East Teams and see what you'd get....Gagnon would not be an
    All-American Goalie, I know that much.....H*ll, he let in as many goals
    Sunday as LaGrand did in the entire Minnesota series (3 games) plus
    the Wisconsin semi-final game. Not too good, I'd say.
    
    Till next year, when all those ECAC teams will darken our Forum 
    again, and boost the over-all records of all Hockey East teams.....It's

    Now, now JD, let's not over do it again, just because the Huskies
    season ended with a lesson in paper training at Walter Brown.
    
    Yes, BC lost, no they didn't choke....far from it. In fact, their ride
    to Joe Lewis the last month and a half has been quite memorable, thank
    you very much. Boy, if this year was choking, I'll take it every year! 
    
    I'll send you the Program from the first home game next year when we 
    raise another Hockey East Championship Flag.

    I have no remorse in NU's season.  None.  Nada.  I find it hard
    to believe that year in, year out, BC fields the best talent in
    the nation, and yet they can't win when it counts.  A lot of excellent
    losses for the Eagles.  They should win the Hockey East crown every
    year given their talent and recruiting - anything less is a vast
    underachievement.  For them to not even make the title game should
    be a disappointment.  Maybe all the high recruited talent lacks
    in one department - heart, desire?  Perhaps coaching is lax.  They
    should roll every year, the Eagles should.  Instead they sputter,
    then roll, then sputter, then roll, and when the big one comes,
    they choke on it surer than a dog pisses on a hydrant.

    Difference is they didn't get blown out by Hockey Least "BIG".  I'm sure
    if ECAC's better teams played the bottom of the Hockey Least standings,
    you'd see the opposite of BC playing Army or Vermont or whoever they
    played.         
    
    Ooh, Legrande gave up fewer goals on home ice... so?  What did Gagnon
    give up in 2 games (all they needed in their series at home, they
    didn't lose...)?
    
    When Hockey Least wins an NCAA championship, or at least does better
    in the NCAA's (the real tournament, not the Beanpot) then I'll start
    to listen... you can fatten up on the Brown's (no offense Jeff), 
    Army's and Dartmouth's all you want, so does ECAC teams.  Call me
    when they win the big ones...  Wisconsin deserved it from what I saw.
    Same can't be said about the Least.  Keep dreamin' and be happy with
    your conference championship until then...

    Kip Miller-Michigan State, very deserving.....If Dave Emma stays in
    school, which he should, I think he'll be a strong candidate for the
    award next year. 
    
    For the record, I stir things up on the topic of ECAC vs Hockey East. 
    I really don't have a feeling one way or another. Point in fact, the 
    two leagues have started to play each other again, and the ill-fated 
    Hockey Fest '90 was the first attempt at reconciliation. It's going to 
    take awhile, but I think the leagues will probably merge again
    in the next few years, especially if the NCAA limits the number of
    games, shortens the season etc. These two points were at the heart of
    the split in the first place. Any of the coaches that I have spoken
    with are not happy with the current arrangement. The stronger ECAC
    teams get no respect because of the bottom of the league, and the 
    Hockey East teams don't like the current number of times that they have
    to face each other. The playoff situation in Hockey East is also a
    joke. 
    
    Maine is the only Hockey East team that plays the full 39 games. Both
    BC and BU play 32-33 games which is not too many more than what the
    ECAC allows it's teams to play. I think the NCAA is going to shorten
    the season anyway, right now it is 6 mos. long. 
    
    And yes, we'll take our flag, thank you!!!

    I'll state the case again....If this is choking, I'll take it every
    year....Your contention that BC has the best talent in the country,
    year in and year out, is an oversimplification on your part. I think 
    you'll find year in and year out, that Wisconsin, Minnesota, 
    Michigan State, BU and Maine all have people who are as strong or
    stronger. 
    
    I also think that your contention that BC should have been to the
    Championship game displays more emotion on your part than anything
    else. Believe me, it was no disappointment. The 10 minute standing
    ovation that the BC fans gave the team after the loss to Wisconsin  was
    well deserved. Yes we were disappointed we couldn't win, but I think 
    three other teams had the same feeling. The fact remains, we lost to
    the best team in the country, as did Colgate, and believe me, Wisconsin
    was a cut above both of them. 
    
    As for coaching, Ceglarski has more wins than any coach. That I think
    speaks for itself. There isn't a coach alive that wouldn't want that.
    
    As for heart and desire......read the newspaper accounts of the UNH
    game, four Maine games, and the ride through the playoffs....again,
    more emotion on your part, than any real facts.
    
    It's clear to me at least, that emotion plays more of a role in your
    arguements than anything else. If you are in fact happy with the Huskies
    season, then I guess mediocre is fine.....that speaks for itself.
    
    You are right in one thing though...BC will be back, next year in 
    St. Paul. Will they win? Who knows, but its going to be a lot of fun
    finding out.

    Kip Miller from Michigan State won the Hobey Baker award, Greg Brown
    finished second.
    
    JD, you know no one hates BC more than I do.  I had a chance to
    watch them a couple of times this year (dating a BC alum will do
    that to you, but I never cheered for them) and they were an extremely
    young team.  They only had 2 seniors going into the season and one
    of them left midway through the year.  Maine and BU were similarly
    young.  I watched the Wisconsin game on TV Friday night and I felt
    they played as well as they could play.  Wisconsin was a far, far
    better team and if it hadn't been for Scott LaGrand, BC would have
    been blown out.  I do think a talented team like they are should
    do more consistently better, but I can't consider losing to Wisconsin
    a choke.  They've done it many times in the past, but not this time.
    The Wisconsin defense blocked most of the BC shots before they could
    get anywhere close to the goal.
    
    I never saw Providence this year but I think over the nexted few
    years, Maine, BU and BC will pretty much dominate Hockey East. 
    Watch out for UNH too because they're coming back.  NU, Lowell and
    Merrimack are going to find it hard to go much of anywhere.

    So BC was young.  ALl that means is they will get older, and follow
    in the footsteps  of their past alums - great talent, good records,
    excellent losses when it counts - playing in a league where their
     overall talent should make them champeens every year.

    And there is no emotion involved in your glowing reports of BC's
    great losses.  Watching BC, there 3rd line usually had more talents
    than NU's first line - and it amazed me that Cement-head couldn't
    squeeze a champeenship out of them.  Yeah, Len has all the wins,
    but I considered Jack Parker at Bu to have been HEAD and SHOULDERS
    above Lenny boy.  WIht the talent Lenny boy gets every year, he
    should roll easily through Hockey East and into the NCAA finals
    - instead, he manages a way to screw it up.  Providence's coaches,
    Maine's coaches are all better at getting performance from their
    players then Cement-haid is. 
    
    If Northeastern recruited the talent BC does (i.e. got all the top
    players...), and didn't win champeenships I'd be down on them.
    
    I'd like to see an Eastern team win the champeenship again - and
    with their talent and recruiting powers, BC should be the team to
    do it - but they won't.  BU, Maine, Harvard, Providence will have
    a better shot than the excellent losers.

    No, I didnt' forget about Harvards great win last year, which is
    the 'again' part.  Eastern champeenships are few and far between,
    unfortunately.
    
    I'd like to see hockey east and the ECAC get back together again.
    I was all for Hockey East when it started, but I'm not to hot on
    it now.  I think a schedule with ECAC teams, and maybe one swing
    throught the west would be good for the eastern teams.   I kind
    of miss the St. Lawrences' and the like.

    Lane MacDonald was named assistant coach at Harvard last week. 
    He was an Olympian in 1988, won the Hobey Baker award in 1989,
    captained Harvard to its first-ever National Championship in 1989,
    won every major athletic award at Harvard, played in Switzerland
    before a head injury forced him to quit, is extremely articulate
    and will be a great addition to Harvard's coaching staff.
    
    Hockey East is considering making its league games into 2 25 minute
    periods for next season in an effort to win a TV contract from ESPN.

    It's called money. They want to get a TV contract, and they fell that
    by getting the game under 2 hrs. they can get a cable deal. Mind you,
    college hockey has always been a personal favorite to the people in the
    South and the West....What a joke.
    
    I agree with John, a few replies ago. I think that this will hurt the
    game a lot. The league itself is weak to begin with, at least 3 of 
    the teams belong in 1-AA, and with this change, Hockey East is
    even more of a joke. 

    Hockey East has seen the light and is going back to the 3 periods of 20
    minutes each format.  They felt the NCAA wouldn't let them change back
    if they implemented it on an experimental basis, and also thought it
    would hurt their chances of getting at large bids to the NCAA
    tournament.

    They're still Hockey Least in my eye...

    UNH head hockey coach Bob Kullen died this weekend of complications
    related to his heart transplant of a couple of years ago.
    
    The man had lots of courage.  After the heart transplant he came back,
    was head coach for a couple of years and got married as well.  Acting
    head coach Dick Umile will probably take over.

    It is indeed a sad time, not only for UNH, but all of College Hockey. 
    Bob continued the proud tradition of Wildcat hockey. His teams reflected
    his courage and never give up spirit. His UNH teams were improving each
    year, and but for a furious 2 minute comeback by BC last March, would
    have played Maine for the Hockey East Championship. He was the color
    man on the NCAA Final Four telecast back to Boston, and did a very good
    job.
    
    He was a gentleman, and reflected everything that college sports should
    be. He will be missed.
    
    I'm sure the 'Cats will dedicate their season to this man, and I for one
    wish them well. Sports needs people like Bob Kullen, and its a shame
    when something like this happens.

Providence beat RPI in the 3rd overtime, 6-5.

For RPI, Joe (Future Hobey Baker award winner)Juneau had a goal and 2 assists
(or 2 goals and 1 assist).  RPI came from a couple of goal deficit to
send it in to overtime.

    Merrimack's record goes to 2-1-1, 1-0 in the Hockey East.  NU drops to
    0-4-1, 0-1-1 in the Hockey East.  MC has now beaten NU in 8 of their

    Read in the Glob that Merriwack beat Kent State 5-4.  Is a two-game
    away series a normal occurance these days?  I guess with everybody's
    budget being in the same boat, I wouldn't be surprised.

	Okay, I've never before entered a note in this conference, because 
	somehow it seemed akin to playing with matches and gasoline, but I 
	finally have to ask:  Can somebody explain this "nexted/lasted/
	firsted/etc." business for me?  I'm one of those anal-retentive 
	writer/editor types who is driven crazy by misspellings and typos 
	in Notes, but this is clearly intentional.

    We had a person who used to participate in the conference named Ralph
    Caso.  Ralph's typing and spelling abilities were, to be kind,
    questionable.  Last and next quite often came out lasted and nexted. 
    Our continuing to use them is kind of a memorial to Ralph.
    
    If someone will put in an example of a Caso reply for you, I think

    In a nutshell, ::SPORTS at one time had a very outspoken member by the
    name of ::RCASO, which stands for Ralph Caso. I'd never met him, but
    he seemed like an O.K. guy with a big problem with the English language

	explanations cleared up a few idle questions for me, because I've 
	encountered a number of references to "Ralph" and "CASO-ing" (I 
	wondered if the latter had something to do with case, as in 
	"uppercase").

    Doesn't seem that they're doing too bad this year considering that
    Merrimack (1,500 students maybe?) is holding their own against the
    likes of BC, BU, and Nor'eastern (student populations equal to or
    greater than that of NY City.)
    
    I remember that when Merrimack was in division II, they played teams
    outside the division like BU when the Terriers were vying for the
    national championship.  They rarely beat them (if ever), but they sure
    got a lot of experience playing against the big boys.  By taking on the
    powerhouses and not backing down, it had to help their game against
    their own division rivals.

    Dickstah, I'm trying to figure out this year's Merrimack team.  While I
    haven't seen them play yet, just reading about the big wins already
    this season makes me wonder if they really are that good.  I guess
    we'll see after they've played NU, BC, and UNH again.......
    
    Was talking to a friend who has seen ULowell play this season, and all
    he could comment on is how Coach Riley's done it again, refering to the
    cheap-shot style of play.  
    
    What's Merrimack's home schedule for the nexted week or 2, or are they
    on a holiday break?  I'd love to catch a game this saturday night , if

    Paul, you may be right about Riley being retired.  I was making an
    assumption, but my friend did claim that ULowell played dirty.....
    
    Maybe I should've said something like, "Sure looks like former coach
    Riley schooled his successor very well in keeping with the ULowell
    tradition of dirty play."  :-)  :-)

    Riley announced his retirement before the season but the retirement
    doesn't take effect until after this season.  Former Bruin player and
    UMaine Assistant Coach Bruce Crowder (Keith's brother) was named
    Associate Head Coach at Lowell before the season and will take over for
    Riley after this season.

    How about the named teams records?  I believe that NU is in the
    basement, so Merrimack winning that game is not suprising.

    RPI lost to UNH, beat Harvard in OT, and the standings won't be in the
    papers until next Tuesday.  If I remember, I'll post them.

    Saturday nights result.....BC 6 - Maine 5. Maine held an early second
    period lead of 3-1 before the Eagles roared back. Dave Emma's short
    handed goal at the 9 minute mark of the third period stood up as Scott
    LaGrand stopped 14 third period shots in relief of Sandy Galuppo. One
    potentially bad moment came in the third period as the starting Maine
    goalie was taken off the ice on a strecher with a potential neck injury
    after a pile-up in front of the Maine crease. Snow came in in relief,
    and promptly coughed up the game winner. 
    
    The series continues on Jan. 15th with the Eagles traveling to Maine.
    The regular season series finishes up at Conte Forum on Jan. 20th. 
    
    Re: Merrimack - BC
    BC plays at Merrimack on Jan. 5th, and return home to Conte Forum on 
    Feb. 1st to finish the regular season series with the Warriors.

	I agree with you Walt, now those games with RPI will take on a new meaning,
not just the exhibition status they have now.

    I had heard nothing about the possibility of UNH switching leagues. 
    I'd heard that the choice of whom to elevate came down to either Union
    or Rochester Tech.  I guess the league felt that Union's hockey program
    was a better fit than Rochester's.  Also, the ECAC basically has its
    teams in pairs.  In other words, on a weekend, when you travel, you
    play two teams in tandem.  The pairings are:  Harvard-Dartmouth,
    Yale-Brown, RPI-Vermont, Clarkson-St Lawrence, Colgate-Cornell and
    Princeton-Army.  With Army dropping out, Princeton is left without a
    travel partner and Union is a heck of a lot closer to Princeton than
    Rochester is.  Bringing Rochester in would have required a lot of
    changes to the scheduling.
    
    I think Union's a good choice.

    Walt, I agree with you.  Union and RPI would be a good travelling pair. 
    If you do that though, then Vermont and Dartmouth would be a good pair. 
    Then, Harvard and Brown would be a good travelling pair.  Then, Yale
    and Princeton would be too.  Yale isn't that much further from
    Princeton than Army is and it's probably a lot closer than Union is.
    It could mean a realignment of the ECAC schedule.

    Wow, that does all make sense.  And I'd more likely go to Brown Friday
    and Harvard Saturday than Yale or Dartmouth....

    BC's H-E-M line (Heinze/Emma/McInnis) accounted for all three goals as
    the fifth ranked Eagles beat the top ranked Minnesota Golder Gophers
    3-2 last night in the opening round of the Great Western Freeze Out in
    Inglewood, Ca. Goalie Scott LaGrand kept the Gophers at bay in what
    turned out to be a scoreless third period.
    
    BC will play tonight the winner of the Michigan State/Univ. of Toronto game
    which was the second game of the double header last night. Assuming the
    Spartans won last night. This will be the third time this year that BC
    and MSU will meet. The teams met earlier this year in East Lansing
    splitting the series a game apiece.
