75.4Redmen update....HOCUS::SALTALAMACCHWed Dec 20 1989 11:2210
The Redmen stand 8-2 and are ranked #19 this week, dropping a spot
after two wins last week (go figure that one out).

BF Jayson Williams is due to return this Saturday vs. Niagara.
All things considered, the Redmen did fine without Williams for
the initial 10 games. Replacement Jr. F Billy Singleton filled
in admirably. He should continue to start for the next few weeks.

Jayson Williams is raring to go, but team doctors may not allow
him to play until next Saturday. Williams was hoping to play 15-20
    minutes tomorrow evening vs. Niagara.

75.6Williams willing but not all that able yet...POCUS::SALTALAMACCHTue Dec 26 1989 10:3016
Jayson Williams returned to play on Saturday night (an 83-51 blowout
vs. Niagara), was a non-factor, and was not the Williams of old (until
he got into a scrap with a Niagara player). Williams started both
halves (since he was "warm" from the warm-up drills, but Billy
Singleton (the game's top scorer with 17 points) replaced him after
5 or 7 minutes each half.

I suspect that Williams is still about two (2) weeks away from "game"
condition, but he should be ready to go 30-35 minutes in the Redmen's
Big East opener vs. UConn next Tuesday, January 2, at Alumni Hall.

75.7Redmen/Huskies tomorrow evening.....HOCUS::SALTALAMACCHMon Jan 01 1990 18:3616
The Redmen routed Davidson Friday evening, by 18, but the game
    wasn't even that close.

The Redmen are 11-2 today, with the Big East opening up tomorrow
evening vs. UConn, 10-2 themselves. This game at Alumni Hall will
be a good test for both teams; the guard-oriented play of UConn
(Smith/Gwynn/George) vs., the inside play of the Redmen (Williams,
    Sealy, Werdann and Singleton).

Keys will be the play of Harvey, Sproling and Buchanan for the Redmen
and Sellers, Cyrulik and Burrell for the Huskies.

    Prediction: Redmen 68 Huskies 61

75.8Redmen update....vs. UConnPOCUS::SALTALAMACCHWed Jan 03 1990 14:4436
In a BIG (EAST) surprise, SJU ripped the UConn Huskies by 31 points
last night at Alumni Hall in NY.

It was great to see the crowd so into the game. And, its good to
finally get to the regular season and have a real game played.

All that UConn did well was battle SJU off the offensive boards
in the first half by a generous margin.

The Redmen are a good team, not great, so the result may be misleading.

SJU got excellent play from PG Boo Harvey (20 points and many assists,
to go along with a fine floor game), BF Jayson Williams (who's back
after missing the first nine (9) games of the season with a stress
fracture in his foot), who had 25 points, SF Malik Sealy (19 points)
and C Rob Werdann (10 points (no missed shots), lots of rebounds
and three (3) early blocks inside that helped the Redmen to an early
    lead).

If and when SJU gets some point production from the 2G spot (Jason
Buchanan and Chuck Sproling, who nevertheless both played well), they
might really have something going, what with reliable F Billy
Singleton providing valuable minutes off the bench.

SJU played as near to a perfect game as is possible.

The Redmen are now at 12-2 (1-0 in the BIG EAST), with Boston College
on the road this coming Saturday evening.

This one scares me, because with the combination of an SJU blowout of
UConn and the Georgetown rout of BC last night, BC should be in
an ornery mood, while SJU needs to guard against a letdown.

75.11Redmen 2-0 in the BE.....POCUS::SALTALAMACCHMon Jan 08 1990 10:1113
The Redmen beat BC on Saturday night to go to 2-0 in the Big
East (the obvious big story in the league was the Villanova
    win AT Syracuse).

Jayson Wiiliams, Boo Harvey and Malik Sealy all keyed the win.

The Redmen are 13-2 overall, with Syracuse coming up Wednesday
evening, 7 pm, at the Dome on ESPN.

This will be an interesting test for SJU.

75.12Praying Redmen??POCUS::SALTALAMACCHWed Jan 10 1990 09:2122
There's a BIG one at the dome tonight with #6 Syracuse vs. #15 SJU.

The game is on ESPN at 7:00 pm EST.

The Redmen need to get supreme efforts out of Jayson Williams, Malik
Sealy, Boo Harvey and Rob Werdann, as well as bench help from Billy
Singleton, Chuck Sproling and David Cain. A terrible matchup for SJU
    is Jason Buchanan vs. anyone.

The Redmen need to keep the game in the high 60's or low 70's to
have a chance vs. the explosive Orangemen. SU will be ready after
the home loss to Villanova on Saturday.

SJU's best hope is that SU continues their early season Big East
    woes.

    Prediction: SU 85 SJU 72

    Phil,
If SJU can be effective w/zone coverage and play good "d"
then maybe, we can keep SU on their poor shhoting percentage streak.

As much as I hate to say it, if SU shoots better than 40%, we probably
don't have a chance but lately, if their (SU's) inability to score outside
of the paint continues, for us it'll be like playing with 6.5 guys
on our team! Pray it happens.

Said it before and I'll say it again. St.John's should win this one.
You guys are just making excuses for yourselves ahead of time with your
crap about Syracuse being hungry and all.

Ask any coach and (if they're being honest) will tell you they'd rather
play a team that's not playing well (Syracuse) coming off a loss
(should've been losses in Syracuse's case) than a team playing well
coming off a win that might make them a bit lackadaisacal.

St. John's matches up well. They've got better guards. They play a
half court game. They've got some inside strength to play Syracuse at
least honest. Their only hope for losing is to get caught up in a fast
break game. Otherwise, put it down as a "W".

In the 2nd half of the doubleheader tonight the Heels do battle with an
inferior Maryland squad. The Terps are at home though, so they'll
probably put up a bit of struggle. Carolina by 6.

75.18Redmen squeak out a W....POCUS::SALTALAMACCHSun Jan 14 1990 13:4928
The Redmen moved to 3-1 (14-3 overall) in the Big East with yesterday's
    71-70 win over Pitt.

In a must win situation (coming off the Syracuse loss and playing
against a Big East foe (at home) that hadn't won a game), SJU got
a solid 2nd half performance from Jayson Williams, and some great
foul shooting by Jason Buchanan (4 in a row) in the last minute.
Sixth man Billy Singleton did the job once again, adding 14 points
and 7 rebounds, while helping the Remen to get back into the game
in the ist half with a gutty performance. Rob Werdann was
non-existent, and Boo Harvey missed tow (2) one and ones in the
    last minte.

For Pitt, Brain Shorter and Jason Matthews were outstanding, while
Bobby Martin and Darren Morningstar played well. Darelle Porter
did not play well. It is amazing how many walk-ons Pitt is using,
as a result of five (5) recruits not making the grade and Sean Miller
    and Rod Brookin being injured.

Next up for the Redmen is an away game at Villanova. The Wildcats
are a tough team to figure...they seem to either blow out their
opponent (Syracuse and Providence, both away games, or get blown out
(UConn at home). SJU has never played well at Villanova, but if they
get their inside game working, they may be able to squeak out a win,
    75-72.

    Phil,

What NY radio station (AM please) is broadcasting the Redmen this
year? I'll be on the road tonight and I'd like to try to pick up
    the game.

This could be the toughest game so far, 'Nova has been playing
real well (as well as we) and the line is "Pick".

    Interesting food for thought:

SJU is ranked ~#13; 'Nova isn't ranked; Tonight's game line is even....

75.20Redmen on a Roll....POCUS::SALTALAMACCHWed Jan 17 1990 00:1530
Kev, sorry I got this info to you so late (the SJU-Villanova game
just ended), but the Redmen can be heard on WCBS 880/AM, a pretty
powerful station in NYC (I've received it into Pennsylvania).

Oh, by the way, the Redmen squeaked out a W, 64-58, on the road
against the young Wildcats (ten (10) sophs and frosh are key
contributors). The Redmen had a 3 point lead at the half (with
no one distinguishing themselves), and built a 15 point second half
lead, before giving all but one point back. Jason Buchanan, with
some key free throws at the end and an overall fine game, Billy
Singleton, with a solid first half and Jayson Williams, with some
tough rebounds and key baskets in the second half, all contributed.

Boo Harvey played well in spots, but for a senior, he seemed tentative
at times and seemed to wilt quite a bit under the pressure of the
'Nova press. Malik Sealy was in foul trouble, but finished in double
figures. C Rob Werdann struggled again, and Chuck Sproling added two
key free throws late in the game. Bench warmer Barry Milhaven
contributed some minutes off the bernch for Sealy.

The Redmen are now 4-1 (15-3 overall) in the Big East, with BC upcoming
    this Saturday night at home.

For 'Nova, Freshman Calvin Byrd was outstanding; he has both silky and
explosive moves, plays fine D and with lots of enthusiasm. 2G Greg
Woodard seems to have a lot more confidence this season.

75.21REDMEN #1 in the BIG EAST.....HOCUS::SALTALAMACCHSun Jan 21 1990 14:4421
The Redmen beat BC last night, by 6 at Alumni Hall, to go 5-1 in
the BE Conference (with all the big upsets, the REDMEM are FIRST
in the BE), and 16-3 overall.

The game vs. BC was a bore. Only Jason Buchanan, for the Redmen,
was on his game, and Doug Able was outstanding for BC (24 points).
Two freshmen, David Hinton and Michael Reese, also played well.
With Bill Curley coming to BC next year, the Eagles should improve.

SJU's hold on the top spot in the BE will be challenged this week,
with road games vs. Providence (SJU never plays well at PC; however,
perhaps PC will still be celebrating their hugh win last night vs.
Syracuse) and UConn (and they may still be celebrating their big
win vs. Gtown last night, although, Calhoun will probably have them
sky high after SJU's 31 point home win earlier this month vs. the
    Huskies).

SJU should be happy to come out of this week 1-1.

    SJU - 83
    PC - 75

ESPN showed a very interesting fact during the 2nd half
about PC. The difference between them being 14-1 instead
of their (prior to this contest) 11-4 record is a total
of * 4 * points!!!!!!!!! They lost 2 games by 1 point and another
game by 2. That tells me that they are not a doormat but are a
    very competitive team.

The first half of the game was super slow (something like 35 points)
but the second half's ~50 point level was attributed to a 2x
    improvement in shooting accuracy.

Redmen ssslllooowww.......The second was completely opposite.

Jayson Williams and Boo Harvey led the way, with Malik Sealy, Billy
Singleton, Jason Buchanan and Rob Werdann providing necessary support.

The Redmen have UConn at the opening of their new Arena this evening.
Needless to say, the Huskies will be looking to get back at the
Redmen for their 31 point loss on 1/2/90.

The Redmen have not played well in winning their last four straight

The Redmen took one on the chin last evening in Storrs, CN. UConn
took charge from a 51-51 tie, after the Redmen made one physical
and mental mistake after another. This is not to take anything away
from UConn; they were clearly the better team.

Only Malik Sealy showed up for SJU, with 26 points and 13 rebounds.
Jayson Williams had only 6 points on the night.

There's a real bunch at the top of the BE with the Redmen and Huskies
at 6-2, the Hoyas at 5-2 and the O'men and Friars at 5-3.

SJU gets SU at Madison Square Garden tomorrow evening (and then
the Hoyas Saturday in the Garden....whew, what a week!!). Here's hoping
that the joint is rocking and the O'men are still celebrating their

I'm on my way to the Rutgers/Jayson Williams-less Redmen game at
Madison Square Garden this evening. I expect that Billy Singleton,
Chucky Sproling and Sean Muto will get the bulk of Williams 30+

75.36Redmen still alive...POCUS::SALTALAMACCHSun Feb 11 1990 15:0238
The Redmen won two big games this week, their first after Jayson
Williams (AW). They beat Rutgers 89-77, and Villanova last night,
    in MSG.

The two key players for SJU were Boo Harvey (who seems to have taken
over the Leadership and "Go To" role) and Malik Sealy, with great
support from Billy Singleton (the new PF), C Rob Werdann (Rutgers
game only), backup C Sean Muto (Villanova game only) and Chuck Sproling
(Rutgers game only). Jason Buchanan continues to struggle.

It looks like Lou C. has settled on the following line-up for the
    rest of the season:

C 6'11" Rob Werdann (So) BF 6'7" Billy Singleton (Jr)
SF 6' 8" Malik Sealy (So) 2G 6'1" Jason Buchanan (So)
    PG 5'11" Boo Harvey (Sr)

Subs: 2G/SF 6'4" Chuck Sproling (So)
    	     C 6'10" Sean Muto (Jr)
PG 6' 0" David Cain (Fr)

Cain has struggled terribly. Why Carnesecca doesn't use Sr. Darrell
Aiken at the point is beyond me.

It's apparent the the Redmen need to get some big players into the
program. With super 6'3" G Lee Green coming into the program next
year, the Redmen have not solved any of their "Big Body" and depth
problems. They are still waiting to hear on 6'10" C/BF Shawnelle
Scott, out of All Hallows HS in the Bronx, but so are at least five
other schools. The Redmen will probably have to go the JUCO route
    for some big people.

The Redmen are now 7-4 in the BE (4th place) and 19-6 overall.
Without Williams, they are 10-2; with him 9-4.

to keep our chances alive. Then, its off to Gtown on Wednesday

The Redmen lost to PC last night, 77-74 at Alumni Hall.

Boo Harvey single-handedly brought the Redmen back from a 16 point
deficit in the last 5 minutes with five 3-pointers. The Redmen were
in a position to win, when Chris Watts dribbled the ball out of
bounds, but Harvey missed a jumper, and Darrell Aiken was stuffed,
with the arrow in PC's favor.

Lou C. was hit with two technicals in the 1st half, thanks to some
real poor officiating from the refs, especially Jim Burr. He was
TERRIBLE. I'm usually even tempered about the officiating, but
last night was the worst I've seen in a real long time.

C Rob Werdann was outstanding for SJU with 16 pts and 14 rebounds.

team shooting percentage, with Boo pouring in 6-10 3pts, I don't

The Pitt vs St. Johns game was strange. Was it my imgaination or were
the players slipping and sliding all over the place? It was like they
left the ice in the igloo.

And speaking of which, why wasn't this game played at Pitt Field House?
Since when did Pitt start playing anyone beside Georgetown and Syracuse
at the Arena? Certainly lost a lot of fan support and advantage.

Boo was great, as usual; however, Jason Mathew's shot was almost a

The Redmen have signed 6'8" SF/2G Sergio Luyk, out of Kentucky, a
    highly skilled European-style player.

With this signing, the Redmen now have three (3) players on board
    for 1990/91:

    6'10" BF/C  Shawnelle Scott, out of NYC All Hallows HS;

6'3" PG/2G Lee Green, out of Cheshire Academey, Ct. (via NYC); and,

The Redmen are still awaiting word on 6'8" 2G Walt Williams on his
transfer plans (from Maryland; supposedly, he's also considering
    Georgia Tech and Georgetown).

Given this, the Redmen roster for 1990/91 looks like this:

75.50Middleton to SJU......POCUS::SALTALAMACCHSun Jul 15 1990 12:3621
    The Redmen received news on Thursday of last week that Forward (6'6";
plays Power/Big ??) Lamont Middleton, from the University of Hartford,
will be transferring to SJU and will be eligible for the 1991/92
hoop season (after sitting out the mandatory one (1) year).

Middleton has been the leading player for Hartford the past two (2)
years (I believe his numbers last year were something like 16-19 ppg
and 8 rpg), and was originally recruited hard by SJU his senior year
    in HS.

Middleton will be a Junior (according to my records) and will be
able to step in for forward Billy Singleton, who will graduate after
    this season.

Does anyone have any additonal info on this or re: Middleton?

75.52Redmen Update.....POCUS::SALTALAMACCHThu Nov 15 1990 10:5458
For those SJU fans out there, I attended the annual Red/White
    intrasquad game last night.

Here's my cut at the latest Redmen team:

SF Malik Sealy looks as good as ever. His ball-handling skills seemed
to have improved; he will be one of the top SF's in the country this
    year.

BF Billy Singleton DNP, but lots is expected of him this year.

C Rob Werdann looked about the same; perhaps a little stonger. He
still has to figure out ways to stay out of foul trouble.

PG David Cain may be the starter, and he's very quick; however, he's too
    out of control for me.

2G/PG Jason Buchanan looked lost. I suspect however, that he will be
the starter in the early going.

    Off the bench:

SF/2G Carl Beckett (DNP last year with a bad back) looked excellent.
In my book, he's the most improved Redmen, and should get a lot of time
off the bench, and may ultimately win the 2G spot.

2G Chuck Sproling looked lost on offense, but as good as ever on D.

C Sean Muto will give the Redmen adequate time as a backup to Werdann.

    The freshmen:

SF/2G 6'8" Sergio Lyuk can flat out shoot. He hit some bombs, and
looks like the best threat for the trey. However, he has trouble
getting his shots, and will be brought along slowly. He passes very
    well.

BF/C Shawnelle Scott 6'10" is not as methodical as I thought he would be.
He will provide depth off the bench this year; over time, he will become a
    solid player.

    Sitting out:

Fr G (prop 48) Lee Green - the word on him is that he's a super player.
Can't wait till next year to see him.

Jr F (Tfr from Hartford) Lamont Middleton - I hear he's a player. The
word on him is that he was the best player in his league the past two
years and that he wanted a new challenge. He should step into
    Singleton's spot next year.

    That's it for now.

    Super extracts include:

"...But the most important abotu Carnesecca's teams is that they
always win and are competitive with the bast teams in the country"

"Werdann has the physical ability to play in the NBA, but he must

    (Best part)

" This will be a typical Redmen team. You will watch them early
in the year and say to yourself that they are not that good but
by the end of the year they will have won 20 games and gained another

The Redmen are 9-0 (and number 9 in the country (although I don't agree
with or believe this is so)) after defeating Fordham on Saturday ecvening.

With only an exhibition game left prior to the start of the BE season
(part two (of four) of) any team's year), it'll be interesting to see
how the Redmen perform up at Syracuse on Jan. 2, 1991.

My prediction for the BE this year is as follows:

    TEAM W L
    ---- - -

    Pitt	10 6
    Syracuse	10 6
    Georgetown 9 7
    Uconn 9 7
    SJU 8 8
    Villanova 8 8
    Seton Hall 7 9
    BC 6	10

Lot's of balance all year long. Of course, some team will come out of

Yeah Phil like Seton Hall.....Pirates are going to be tough I expect them
up in the top 5. How's Shorter feeling, he's the key to Pitt without his
banging in the physical BE they aren't going to make it.
