Ayrton Senna of Brazil, the 1988 Formula One world champion, will
not be allowed to race on the Grand Prix circuit this year unless
he retracts his criticism of the International Automobile
        Federation.

Senna has charged that he was manipulated out of any shot at the
1989 world driving championship so that Frenchman Alain Prost
would win it. Senna's hopes for the title ended when he was
disqualified in the Japanese Grand Prix, the next-to-last race of

Sounds pretty undemocratic to me, although I agree that Senna needs to

*****AYRTON SENNA HAS BEEN BANNED FROM F1*******

Jean-Marie Balestre announced at lunchtime today that Ayrton Senna
has been banned for the whole of the coming seasons F1. The report on
the radio said that when Balestre and Senna met last (in Paris?)
Senna has refused to withdraw the allegation that last years
   championship was manipulated.

Balestre went on to say that Senna will remain banned until he withdraws
   this allegation.

I don't know how to take this! I mean, Senna alone is one thing.
Bernie alone is another. And Ballestre alone in alomost too much. But
throw them in a pot and what do you have? To see JM and Aryton butting
heads reminds me of the battles Bernie and JM had in the late 70's and
early 80's over the control of the sport. Now this. I must say that
JM ramblings sound demented, almost maniacal. $5 will get $10 that
Senna retracts and they kiss and make up. This sounds like the script
for a an afternoon soap opera.

Yesterday Olivier Grouillard has signed a 1-year contract with Osella.
He will be the only driver of the team in 1990.

This morning a spokesman of FISA council has told the press that they
may not renew Ayrton Senna's F1 superlicence ie Senna may not be
allowed to compete in the 1990 F1 championship !!!!

Details of story: After numerous hearings of Ayrton Senna after the
Suzuka affair and because of the very 'offensive' attitude of Senna
(among other charges he has been accusing JMB of unfair attitude towards
himself - and in favor of Prost - resulting in Prost winning the 1989
title), the council cannot assure Senna of delivery of his 1990 F1 super
licence.

Just heard this on the french radio news at lunch time. JMB takes it
personal !

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey Jean-Marie, I said *stop* Ayrton, not STOMP him! :-)

First Senna wheels out of control, now JMB goes off the deep end.
Where's Bernie? He's always good for a laugh. Maybe we can get
Bernie to explain (once again) about why exactly there were only
8,000 people at his U.S. Grand Prix, that way he can look ridiculous
    too.

No doubt about it, Balestre has gone off the deep end. But think
about Senna's charge, he's basically saying the JMB fixed the Driver's
Championship in his countryman's favor, which is to accuse JMB and
FIA of fraud, theft, and racketeering.

Pretty strong stuff, especially in light of the fact that Senna WITHOUT
DOUBT disqualified himself on two if not three rules infractions. And
has I-Hear-A-Taunt forgot who looked the other way when he drove at
full clip past several red flags and an accident during qualification
at Jerez because he had a good lap going and he thought that was took
priority over the safety of fellow drivers and track workers? And who
can forget Taunt's two years of chopping and running people off the
road? Jean-Marie, that's who. Until I-Hear-A-Taunt got pushy with HIM.

JMB is crazy, sure. But the even crazier Senna drove him there.

    Re -.1

Talking of black flags, FISA have changed the rules for next year.
Currently red is only shown at the start/finish line, and black is
shown at all the marshall's posts. There's been a lot of complaint that
these black flags are hard to spot, so the new rule is that red flags
will be shown at all points to indicate a stopped race.

I remember at one time it was commonly believed that Balestre was down
on Prost. He even fined him once for not turning up to a press
conference or something similar, and also for criticising FISA when he
was black-flagged for a starting offence half-way through a race.

Is it possible that even the noters are being manipulated by JMB?

the best way is to generate outrageous contraversy! Perhaps all of this is
just a big show designed to keep the FISA coffers full to the brim.

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd feel sorry for Ayrton Senna,
but I'm getting a bit sick of hearing about his crimes against
    humanity.

Sure he's done a bit of whingeing this year , but not as much as
Prost, whom I used to admire. Nobody would deny that he did commit
these various infringements over the course of the year but why wasn't
he stopped at the time? I think its disgusting to bring the house down
    on him now.

I've heard that he's determined to dig his heels in over this
refusal to grant his licence, even to the point of quitting which
would be a shame (what am I saying??...)

As an aside - I think you're all a bit rough on Gerhard Berger.
You dont just walk away from a shunt like he had in Imola without
it affecting you. Its not surprising that he was a bit frazzled for
    most of this year

I will read on with interest

    re. FISA and Senna

There's only a threat of not renewing Senna's F1 superlicence at
this point. Now Napoleon Balestre wants public apologies from Senna.

What really concerns me is that F1 (because of JMB) is becoming
to look like football/soccer ie if someone speaks a little bit too
    loud then he/she gets banned.

I thought this sort of attitude would never appear in high skills
or high tech sports. The Senna case is a little bit like tennis
with Nastase or McEnroe. What Nastase used to tell the referee and
marshalls was "the difference between you guys and myself is that
I'm the champion and I stand in the middle of the court while you
    guys sit on the side".

I would like to see JMB do what he has to do : get the championships
organised, publish rules, work on new ones, help develop auto clubs,
... etc ... insted of putting himself in the shoes of

      1. a businessman
      2. a dictator (a la Pinochet, Ceaucescu, Jaruszelski, ...)

After all the world champion is xxxx (Senna, Prost, Piquet, Fangio,
...) NOT Balestre. Nobody cares about Balestre, there will be another
FISA president when he retires but the Sennas, Mansells, Prosts,
are the champs and they are unique.

That's what I hate about Balestre : this need to appear on television
    or on the front pages.

Did anyone else see Michael Waltripp's accident on Saturday?

Quite a testament to the design and building of NASCAR cars. The
car literally disintegrated, yet Waltrip walked away, virtually
unscathed.

Not so for the driver at Stafford Springs Speedway, Stafford Springs, CT,
who died in Sunday's Spring Sizzler. I believe it was a NASCAR
Modified or SK Modified event. He hit the wall, and was later pronounced
dead at a nearby hospital...

I have to disagree there, Dan.

I've seen many many crashes in NASCAR competition, and I think that
they are probably the safest racing cars. I don't have statistics
to back that up, but from empirical observation, I see less injury
in NASCAR than in CART lets say.

Waltrip's was the worst crash I've seen in a while. Even the roll
cage was bent. But the man walked away with a few bruises.
Unbelievable.

I'd bet that a crash of similar severity in CART would have produced
some serious injuries. (For one thing, CART drivers are all but
laying down, and I'm sure a similar crash would have resulted in
some pretty badly fractured legs for the driver...)

JMO, though...

Another thing that I think is EXTREMELY cool these days are the
in-car cameras, and the cams on the bumpers etc.

To some people, I suppose watching guys in Ford Thunderbirds and
Chevy Luminas go round and round would be boring, but I love to
watch NASCAR. The great camera views, and shots of the drivers
working the car are so interesting....

And I still love the way they work the sponsors name in there...too cool.

If I was driving, I'd want to drive for Trojans or Ramses.... That
way I'd always smile when I mentioned my sponsor...

No, but they have the Camel GT races there on Memorial Day
with the Porsche 962s et al.

There are a bunch of other type races there during the season.
It's a GREAT place to go, albeit a tad expenive to park.

I went three years ago, and I paid $20 to get in and park, and $5
to get into the paddock (best fin I ever spent!!!!)

An alternative would be to meet some Friday evening at Stafford
Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs. I'd say to get to the
speedway it would be approximately 20-30 minutes from Sturbridge MA,
and it's a great Friday night.

They race NASCAR SK Modifieds there, and there's plenty of beer,
womens (esp in the summer) and good times.

I think they race on Saturdays too, so that's always a possibility.

Actually, if one examines the statistics, one will find that while
speeds have been steadily almost geometrically increasing (heh, heh,
heh, just a little hyperbole there), the safety factors have also
increased so that racing these days is probably much safer than
20 years ago.

No where is this more evident than in NASCAR competition. However,
even CART has improved. While the accidents may look spectacular
with bits and pieces flying everywhere, the cars are actually designed
to do that -- the flying pieces dissapate the awesome energies involved
in the crash.

If you ever get a chance, watch some of the motor sport shows on
SportsChannel, Nashville Network or NESN. Very often they discuss
the direct application of knowlegde gained on the track to production
cars...

pivot so they could direct the camera where it was needed. They had one

No, that's where it fails.

Personally, I'd prefer a race like I saw in motorcycle racing
a few years back.

The devised a course which was comprised of sections of motocross,
road racing, and one other type (I forget which). The bikers could
choose the type of bike they felt best suited for the course.
(It was invariably a variation of a motocross bike).

Then they raced like hell. I felt that was a much truer test than
IROC.

But that's neither here nor there anyway. And to be honest, I didn't
even know they were still running IROC.....

They gotta do something about NASCAR. That Pespi Classic crash was
awful. As the man said, it takes minutes just to make a pass, the
fast cars can't get out of the way of the backmarkers. These cars
go to dagblamed fast for that kinda racing - especially on the super
speedways. These restrictor plates have gotta go. France may be a
marketing genius, but he was stupid to try to limit speeds at the power
source in such a clumsy way. The better teams need to have a better
delta. It seems that Bill is so concerned about parity that he's gone
overboard. Hail, he and his phony yellows with 5 laps to go isn't
    good enough?

Btw, one a you experts tale me why radials diminish stock car safety,
too much stick? I've always assumed that radials are more stable and
therefore safer, but apparently this isn't so in the stock cars. Why?

Is Dale Earnhardt God? Probably not, but if he were we'd be better off
cuz then at least the Higher Force would finally assert itself.

You know how NASCAR could kick some serious butt against CART and the
other classes: By inserting, Dayton-style, a road course segment in the
infield of all its courses. The cars would be more interesting, and
the racing teams could sort themselves out. It'd be the ultimate in
racing, the subtlety of oval racing with the late-braking chance-taking
of road course racing. At a time when open wheel racing is committing
suicide on stupid street courses, NASCAR could take over, even go
international, by modernizing their fleet and coming up with a format
that calls on a total driver's skill set. Most F1 drivers are keenly
interested in oval racing, if France took this bold step money sez they'd
    come over.

    re: IROC

Speaking a spec racing, the new SCCA spec racer from Shelby is beautiful.
It's the ultimate poor man's race car (poor man being defined as somebody
with tens of thousands in spare cash and time to pull Gs wif).

    re: NASCAR winnings

salary this year. Senna will sign for nearly $20 next year. Now *that*

On my NASCAR infield road course idea, the disadvantage would be
the lack of parking space, but the biggest advantage would be that
it would provide the best race fan sight lines ever. Imagine watching
a_entire superspeedway-cum-road race right there before your eyes as
if you were at the football stadium!

Btw, to those a you out there with the high class to be F1 fans, turns
out that (American) Steve Nichols, Prost's race engineer, chose the
wrong gear ratio for the amount of wing they had up and thus Prost and
Mansell were hitting rev limiter on those long Hockenheimring straights.

This is a_important point, for it means that Ferrari steal has power
parity with the dread McHondas, it was only bad race set-up that cost
them competitiveness at the German. Sunday's Hungarian (7:50 EDT on

Steven, you need to restructure your life.

For example, by purchasing a bed pan, you could peench before you
get up. Or better yet, put the terminal in your baffroom, check
Sports while you're peenching. Fed the dog and the kid at the
same time, and while the kid is eating, change his diapers (he'll

from the one *you* watched, Stevie_boy, cuz the guy who crashed on

his crash by saying "I lost downforce..." Looked to me like he came
into Parabolica too damned fast ran off the road and nearly killed
    himself.

Also, you say that nobody had a chance at taking a run at him, yet
Prost was only a 8 seconds down before he ran off a slew of fastest
laps. With his better tire situation, Prost woulda certainly been
wheel-to-wheel with Senna by the last few laps had he not been blocked
by a backmarker who let Senna by without a peep. But, with about
15 laps left it looked like a barnburner. Steven_boy, for a modest

Senna ran a softer overall compound, which, according to the laws
of physics, meant Prost had more stick in the late race. Now, true
Senna is a great driver on slipperies, but Prost was pressing him
into exchanging fastest laps during the mid-race, which was to Senna's
disadvantage cuz he was nursing his rubber. In the world of F1, once
a tire delta is developed, 8 seconds is nothing. Prost was never able
to develop it cuz he was blocked for a few laps by the geek and Senna
was thus allowed to nurse his tires when they shoulda been failing.
Then, when Prost finally got by (after toasting *his* tires racing a
backmarker) there were only a few laps left, he was 15 seconds or more
back, and Senna had enough rubber to go with anybody for the remainder.

    >'New Orleans' is to 'the Heart of ACC country.'

Fraud. I never had the city in the wrong region, I had the game in the
wrong city. Asides, with the Big10 Champ playing in front of two
bigoted ACC refs it's no wonder that for the second year in a row they
were denied a Final Four berth by way of obvious manipulation of the
game clock so as to allow a team that had already lost to end up
    winning.

That's what makes the cream puff ACC's dastisticks work, though.

These are all relatively slow courses, which plays into the hands of
Prost, whose Ferrari has superior handling. Barring more bad luck,
the experts figure that he has a shot at catching Senna for the World
Driver's Championship, especially given that Senna starts dropping
    wins before Alain.

Also, Alain is due for some luck finally. Berger has behaved like a

The fack remains that I-Hear-A-Taunt has benefited mightily this season
from bumper car action, which Alain never involves himself in (except
that one sweet WC-winning payback at Suzuka :^).

    Reviewing this season thus far:

    1. Mansell ain't nearly as good as Alain, and he's leaving Ferrari
under the guise of a fake retirement outta embarrassment.

    2. Berger ain't nearly as good as Alain by a long shot, and fits the
role of #2 McHonda pilot well where Alain didn't at all.

    3. Prost as #2 got a_even split with I-Hear-A-Taunt over two years
despite running advanced spec engines and getting newer monocoques
and chopping poor Alain off the course where needed. This year,
driving the unreliable lesser-powered red car he's nipping at his
heels and could win a WC with four slow courses coming up.

Conclusion: le Professeur est le mieux. Only Jim Clark or Fangio cain

Anyway, I like Prost. He's not my current fav (Mansell is), but
at least he does it straight up and clean, not like that weenie

Big news hot off the wire: Young French superstar Jean Alesi has

unsuccessful being underpowered and unreliable. But, they're sticking

surprised to see them spring a design that's competitive. I'm not

I say to each there own!!!!! All types of racing these days are very
complex in their own type of racing. I won't go as far to say that one
type of driver is more of a driver than the other. They all have to be
good at it or they wouldn't be where their at!!!!!
Personally the only time I like to watch any F1 is at the start and if
you feel that the last five laps of Nascar is the only part worth
watching. Then thats best for you!!!
Bringing up I.Q., come on!!! If you think you can tell someone's I.Q.
by what type of racing they enjoy, then I question your i.q. Any and
just about all types of racing takes some smarts, usually and that can
be questioned in all types of racing, not any particular one!!!
It takes fans for racing to be a success. If you don't enjoy Nascar
then don't say all Nascar fans are stupid, I'm sure F1 has there share
of pot-bellied, beer drinking fans. I don't recall them seating in any
three piece suits, when I watched the Indy 500!!!!
I'm sure no F1 driver could get in Dale Earnhardt's car and run as

Oh well, so Prost's not going to make it this year...Mansell won in
Estoril, Senna second...which gives Ayrton a handy 18 point advantage for
the last two races, I think...
Anyway, I think there ought to be a rule that prevents the changing of
tires, just as they made with gas-stops. I think it downright
ridiculous that if the tire-crew bungles it, the fella's lost his
previous place in the race quite big. Besides, more durable tires would
add to the importance of driving skills and make the differences
between the different teams less apparent, and F1 is in need of both
things to make the races a bit more enjoyable again...just need to tell
ya that I just watched yesterday's race because I had a flu and the
weather was most miserable in this part of Germany, whereas long time
ago I'd been in front of TV despite the fact that the weather was
great, I was on vacation and my friends guaranteed stunning beauties on
the beach...curse Honda, the decline began with their $$$$...
BUT, just to add to the discussion I followed over the last days in
here...even though F1 is not as exciting as it used to be long time ago
(you ought to see my father's video collection...), no way you'd get me
to watch other type of racing on TV...c'mon, I bet those oval courses
were designed by some sick mind to torture mankind, not to talk about
dragster- or mud-"racing"...bigod, that looks like what Kant would call
"the pure essence of boredom in abstract perfection" or "monotony in
    itself"...
Fellas, just ask yourself why the likes of Mario Andretti or Emerson
Fittipaldi still are (or were, dunno if they're still active, for they
should be nearly as fossilized as Al Unser Sr...) successful in the

Absolutely true, Mansell's absolutely useless as team buddy for Prost,
hell, if the Nr 1 team pilot is fighting for the championship, I darn
expect the number 2 pilot to put in some team effort, he's probably
wise to retire before every top team has kicked him out for being so
    damnably selfish...

For one thing's sure, if you're in the same team as Le Professeur, you
are Nr 2. Prost has a long history of teammates that tried to measure
up with him, and none of them ever could (only Lauda did due to

are really engaged in one-to-one driving against Prost with equal
chances. The pressure's just too much, and they end in the ditch like
Senna and Berger have done a couple of times, for no apparent reason!

I don't understand Ferrari for not keeping a team discipline like
McLaren has done. Berger can't be that bad, at least he showed some
driving skills before he nearly got himself roasted last year...team
    tactics? Guess so.

As for the 4g's in turns...dunno, do you really think F1 would lose a
lot of spectacularity with more durable tires? They've always been
arguing about that before any of the technical changes they
introduced...look back to when they said "no" to the wing sucking
effect that catapulted poor Gilles into the eternal racing grounds, or
when they switched from turbo to air two years ago...the cars still
kept getting faster or being fast enough.

You know, what I want to see is toe-to-toe racing like in the good old
days, even if the cars aren't as super-high tech as they are, hell, if
it only came to technology, what about organizing some Challenger vs
Columbia orbital races, or F-15 vs Mig-29 oval course blasting? What I
saw as a kid in Spain, with Lotus vs Ferrari vs Cooper vs Brabham vs
Matra etc...anyone could win provided he had the skills and a healthy
    dose of guts...

I really feel that a stricter regulation that brings the teams closer
together would add to the excitement. I'd even start watching F1
regularly again, and even go to the circuit, which I haven't done in
ages (Jarama, Spain, 1978...the odd double front-wheeled Tyrells got in
first and second in the rain...).

A.J. should turn in his Nomex for good. He's too damned old to
be driving CART. Did you notice that he went across a large sand
pit without getting his car sideways (and therefore stopped)? His
reflex time is gone, a bad thing in car racing.

Too bad about Moroso. Wasn't he a_up and comer in NASCAR? You'd

    >Just to tighten things up, y'know.

It's ignorant crapulous commentary like this, Gaulke_boy, that makes
me so very sad and sympathetic to you trying to fly in the ever-so-
complex high-flying world of motor sport WHEN YOU AIN'T EVEN LEARNED
TO WALK YET YOU BONEHAID !!

To wit: If Jean-Marie Balestre had wanted to "tighten things up just
a bit" then he woulda taken action against all the blocking and bumping
that has beset poor Alain the past few races. He's always let the boys
be boys except for the time I-Hear-A-Taunt went too far with the
dangerous/cheaty driving last year. Also, how many fake yellows you
    seed in F1? [none]

But the stupidest part about your conspiracy theory is that the broken
cooling system seal was real with real steam seen by real people like
me but apparently not seen by would-be race fans like you and obviously
McHonda either missed it or saw it but decided with less than 20 laps
to go that and a potential World Championship on the line they may as
well as make a run for it (fixing a radiator woulda taken so much time
as to've taken them outta de points in the race anyways).

A DNF from Senna in Japan would not put Prost in a tie. He has 11
scores now and will start dropping points with his next in the points
finish. I think he has a 5th so he would have to drop 2 points which
would net him 7 if he wins. That would leave him 2 behind going to
    Australia.

Finally (!), you may be interested in the following regarding the
premutations of Senna's and Prost's championship chances :

NOTES: In the Driver's Championship, each driver may only score in 11
rounds and must, therefore, start dropping scores thereafter. At present,
this only affects Senna and Prost.

The situation for the championship is that the maximum points
Prost can score is 13 points (he must drop his two worst scores, which are
2 points in Canada and 3 in Brazil). This would make his maximum total 82.
Senna has scored 78 points but has also scored in 11 rounds - his worst
scores are 4 points for 3rd places in Brazil, France and the UK.
Therefore, it follows that Senna needs a win in either of the last two
rounds to clinch the title regardless of what Prost scores (a win would
    give him 78 + 9 - 4 = 83 which is more than Prost could score).

The other permutations are quite interesting. If neither driver
wins one of the two remaining races, Senna wins the championship as
    Prost could only increase his current 69 points by 7 (12 - 5) = 76.
If Prost were to win in Japan with Senna 2nd, Prost would have 76 points
    (69 + 9 - 2) while Senna would have 80 (78 + 6 - 4). If Senna does not
either win or finish 2nd he will not increase his score. Prost needs
to win at least one of the two races, therefore, while Senna just needs
to keep Prost out of the winner's circle!

B.A. like usual you find another excuse!!! :-)

Its a racing TEAM, that usually means more than one person. You have a
GREAT driver in Earnhardt, and you have a GREAT crew with R. Childress
    leading the way!!! :-) :-)

Earnhardt picks up the Winston Cup Championship this sunday!!!
