63.0. "The Official SAN DIEGO CHARGER Note" by CSC32::G_MCINTOSH (Touch Not The Cat, Bot The Glove) Mon Dec 18 1989 11:14

Billy Joe is coming along. Last week he threw for 350 yards in a
losing effort against the Redskins. This week he directed the Chargers
to a 20-13 win against the Chiefs.

The defense was great, and then, of course, there's Butts...176 yards
rushing. I thought Okoye was supposed to be featured?

Glenn, Do you think the Chargers can keep their momentum for this
week?? They will face Denvers Defense which also ranks hi!! I see the
Chargers getting no more than 200 net yards...And thats generous.

Becareful here Tim. Overconfidence breeds losses.

While I fully expect Denver to win, I wouldn't just pass the game off.

    > I see the Chargers getting no more than 200 net yards...And thats
    generous.

Seems like a dumb statement to me. The Chargers offense the past two
weeks have been moving well. And they've been running well. I suspect
you'll see a even mix of running and passing, and I believe that Butts
and Nelson will successfully run against the Broncos. I'll guarantee
that they'll get more than 200 net yards.

63.6Ortmayer Out, Bethard Soon To Be InCSC32::G_MCINTOSHTouch Not The Cat, Bot The GloveTue Dec 19 1989 13:1018
The Chargers yesterday fired Steve Ortmayer as Director of Football
Operations or in other words, General Manager. This clears the way for
Bobby Bethard to move into that spot before April's draft.

This entire situation was, in my opinion, decided in January last year.
I believe that Alex Spanos and Bobby Bethard talked last January.
Bobby then announced his decision to resign from the Redskins front
office. I believe Alex Spanos was in contact with Bobby with regards
to who to hire for head coach. Dan Henning came from Washington and
Henning and Bethard are known to be friends. Bethard didn't want
another situation like in Washington, where he didn't get along with
the head coach, so, Spanos passed over Marty Shottenheimer and took
Henning. Then Bethard sat out the year, and now you see the plan
coming to fruition. With Ortmayer fired, Bethard is in.

It's too bad the battles for the playoff spots will grab all the
headlines this weekend. Denver at San Diego could be one of the
more entertaining games in week 16. With the change in admin,
the Chargers would like this win to finish on a positive note and
send a message that they plan to improve. Who better than to do
    it against?

Anthony Miller is a backup at WR

Well Tim. You put your foot in it this time.

Point #1: This loss to the Chargers will probably propel the
Broncos all the way to the Super Bowl. I think Reeves
will use it to point out to the players that they're not
    	       invincible.

Point #2: The Broncos have not allowed a passer to have a 300 yard
day all season. Billy Joe Tolliver was over 300 yards.

Point #3: The Broncos, with an AFC leading 48 sacks, got 0 against the
Chargers, while the Chargers registered 7 against the
Broncos and now are tied with Denver with 48 sacks. Lee
Williams and Leslie O'Neal rank 1, 2, in the conference for
sacks, followed by Bruce Smith and then Simon Fletcher.

Point #4: It was the BRONCOS that barely made 200 yards of net
offense (206 to be exact). The Chargers had almost 400 (387).

63.20Scouting Staff FiredCSC32::G_MCINTOSHTouch Not The Cat, Bot The GloveWed Jan 03 1990 11:2715
The Associated Press reported this morning that the entire scouting
staff of the San Diego Chargers was fired as part of the front office
shakeup that began with Steve Ortmayer's dismissal as director of
football operations. Also fired were the club's director of player
personnel, director of college scouting, and Ortmayer's personal
    secretary.

Bobby Beathard would be formally introduced as the Chargers' new
general manager today after he signs his contract with the club.

You may be right Jack, but I don't necessarily think so. There's a ton
of young talent on that Charger team, but the front office sucked.
Now, maybe, with the house in order, things will be stable and progress
    can be made.

It's been made official also. Yesterday Bethard signed as Chargers
    General Manager.

I see 2 IMMEDIATE pluses with Bethard now in charge:

1 - The resigning of Gary Anderson, running back. Bethard can
start new with Anderson. He can claim he wasn't involved
in negotiations last year, let's start new, etc.

2 - Alex Spanos has made a "promise of non-interference". This is
the biggest plus, because he's not a football man and always
f****d things up. Now with a successful football man in the
front office, trades will make sense, direction will be steady,
    	    etc.

I, personally, believe this move is worth 2 in the win column, based on
    Bethard alone. He's that good!

Steve that would be a BAD trade for the Chargers. Bo is going back to
baseball, Howie is close to the end, and I'm don't know that much about
McElroy. I know he was injures some this year. Is he injury prone?

When Bethard signs Anderson, that'll give the Chargers a pretty good 4
    running back rotation:
Marion Butts, Tim Spencer, Gary Anderson, Darrin Nelson.

    Glenn "Live from Charger Central"
63.28GENRAL::GIBSONThu Jan 04 1990 17:2316

    Glenn,
McElroy has been "injury prone" this year and last. Before that he was
a Pro Bowl safety. I think there are two reasons for his "injury
proneness". 1) He just turned 30. 2) The guy is totally nuts. He has no
regard what so ever for his own body when filling on running plays.

Next year will be Bo's last in the NFL, more than likely.

Howie has a good 3 years of top ball in him yet. He will not be traded.
He has said, more than once, that if he is ever traded, he would
retire. He only wants to play for the RAIDERS, doesn't need the money
and is active in the Redondo Beach community.

You guys are underestimating Uncle AL. I really think that Bo will
continue to do both. Al's isn't afraid to spend money and isn't about
to force Bo to choose. KC may deleiver and ultimatumn to Bo that he
give up football if he wants to be a three million man, but if Bo balks
I'm sure they'll be more than willing to pay him 2 mill or so without
giving up football and Uncle Al will ceretainly make up the rest +.

Also doesn't everyone wish to see this incredible athelete excel at
both sports? I do. Which I think makes it bad PR move for KC to force
    him.

It's up to BO. If he wants both he'll get both no matter how much
money KC wants to offer him to give up football. If this was the
day and age of 5+ year and lifetime contracts then they'd have a
right to demand it but with only three deals no way.....

You may be right Mike but I really think that Bo will
hang up the football cleats....... Either by being forced
to by KC or of his own accord. How long can he continue
to do both and still remain healthy ? And, the bigger question
is, How much of his seinor citzen baseball career is he giving
up by doing both. He may be able to get Al to make up the
difference and more but will Al pay him when he can't play
football anymore and doing both has shortened his baseball
career by 5 years or so ? I think Bo is a smart man, he
will realize he has alot more to lose in the long run by
playing both and quit football. I could be wrong but I'd
be willing to put a SPACK(tm) up that hes all done after

Jack pretty much summed up why I think he will quit football after next

even bring up the subject because I wanted the note to be about his
death rather a pissing contest re: Al Davis.

I'm not surprised that your paranoia re: Davis' relations with the rest
of the owners in the league and your loyalty to the Raider organization
propelled you into having to defend Davis. Davis' name was never
mentioned in any article I have seen regarding Klein's death.

Monty - The article I saw in the RMNews didn't mention Davis at all.

Klein's book - First Down and a Billion was very good. It spoke of the
trials and tribulations of owning a football team. There was one line
that always sticks out in my mind. "And then once in awhile you get a
player like Duane Thomas on your team." He really loved Duane Thomas.
He admired the hell out of him.

I'll try and find some of the things that Gene said in his book. I do
remember him saying that Duane would NEVER come to practise, wouldn't
talk with anyone and then when it came time to scrimmage or play the
game he would NEVER forget misrun a play omake any mistakes. He always
    had it down perfectly.

Glen, that's exactly the same thing that Staubach said. Duane would
never say a word, but he almost never blew an assignment, and was
never accused of not putting out. He just ran his butt off week
    in and week out.

Of course, in the early 70's, and 'militant' like Thomas was hammered
by the conservative Knights Of The Keyboard (tm). And being in Dallas,
where a black guy was supposed to be a certain way, just added to
    it ... sigh ...
63.58Klein Quotes on Duane Thomas & George AllenBSS::G_MCINTOSHWed Mar 14 1990 14:56145
From Gene Klein's book; "First Down and a Billion, the Funny Business
    of Pro Football" -

In all the years I owned the Chargers, of all the players we
had, one player stands out, or, more accurately, sits out. Duane
Thomas. Duane Thomas was the best football player in the workld, it's
just that that world was not the same one in which all the rest of us
lived. Thomas was the strangest human being I've ever known.

...We knew that if he played up to his capabilities he would be
a tremendous asset to the Chargers, so we started negotiating with
Cowboys general manager Tex Schramm... On July 29, 1972, we made the
deal.

...We couldn't find Thomas for three weeks. Then, on August 17,
he walked into our training camp. On August 17, he also walked out of
training camp. "What happened?" I asked Harland Svare, our head coach.
"It was the stangest thing I've ever seen," Harland said. "He
just stared at me."
	"What do you mean?"
"Just that. He stood about two inches away from me, face to
face, nose to nose, and he just stared at me. He never said a word, he
just stared. Then he left. It was scary."

The following morning he left camp. This time we caught him at
the airport, trying to borrow $94.00 to buy an airplane ticket back to
Dallas. I told Harland to try to convince him to meet me in Palm
Springs to discuss his contract. "All right," Harland said, "but you'd
better watch out. He's gonna come out there and stare at you."
That is exactly what he did. He stood no more than six inches
away from me and just stared into my eyes. He didn't say a word, he
just stared. I asked him a few questions. He continued staring at me.
"You got anything you want to say to me?" I asked again. He continued
staring at me. "Okay, if that's the way you feel," I said, as if we'd
actually had a conversation. "That's all, go ahead back."

After Thomas left Palm Springs, we didn't see him again for two
months. Then unannounced, he showed up just before we were to play the
Cowboys. By that time, our record was 2-4-1 and we'd lost three
successive games. If he wanted to play, we wanted him to play. He
dressed for the game, ran out onto the field with the team, and then sat
down, cross-legged, beneath the goalposts, staring straight ahead.
While the team went through pregame calisthenics, Thomas sat
immobile. Just staring. The team finished its workout and returned to
our locker room for a final meeting. Thomas just sat there, beneath the
goalposts, staring.
I was watching this from my box. "What's he doing?" people kept
asking me. What could I tell them? Staring? Finally, the rest of the
squad came back out onto the field. Thomas still hadn't moved. When
the band started playing the national anthem, we had him half-carried,
half-dragged off the field. He didn't play a single down for us that
season.

Abner Haynes was a bright, decent man, and a few days after the
Chargers had opened the 1973 preseason camp, we agreed on a new contract
for Thomas. Haynes promised Thomas would be at practice the following
morning.
Forty-five minutes before the squad took the field the next
morning, Harland was stunned to see Thomas dressed and working out by
himself. He went through an unusual series of loosening-up exercises
that seemed to be a combination of calisthenics, yoga, and medieval
torture. When the team began scrimmaging, Svare put in Thomas at
running back. "It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen," Harland
told me later, his voice literally shaking. "He'd never been to a
single team meeting, but he shifted into every one of our formations as
if he'd been running them all his life. He didn't miss one. Then he
started running the plays as if we'd designed them especially for him;
every time he got his hands on the ball he broke through the line.
Gene, this was the best performance I've ever seen on a football field,
I mean the best. This guy is solid gold."
The next day I went to the workout to see for myself. Again,
Thomas arrived forty-five minutes early. When practice began, he was
even better than Harland had described. He was s superb runner, a
superb receiver, a superb blocker. His presence seemed to raise the
level of play of the entire team. That night he even attended his first
team meeting.
The third morning, the same thing happened - he showed up early
and dominated practice. I knew what it felt like to discover the Holy
Grail. At the end of the morning workout we stopped for lunch. Duane
got into his car and drove away. Afternoon practice began at 2:20.
When he hadn't returned by 2:10 we began to get a little nervous. 2:15.
2:25. Practice began without him. Soon afterward, he strolled onto the
practice field. He was not wearing his equipment. Svare saw him and
shouted, "Hey Duane, get in here."
Thomas glared right through him. "Quit hassling me, man," he
shouted back. "What are you hassling me for?" He continued walking...

We had to get rid of him. A day or so later we traded him to
the Redskins.

And George Allen? If you asked George Allen what time it was,
he'd trade you a draft choice. If you asked him how his family was,
he'd trade you a defensive back. And his record proves, he knew what he
was doing... But probably the deal of which I'm most proud, the
toughest deal of all, the deal that many people believed was impossible,
the only deal I made in football that... was getting George Allen to
actually give us something of value for Duane Thomas.
After it had becomve obvious that we had to get rid of Thomas,
the question became who would take a player so difficult to deal with
that even the San Diego Chargers, the worst team in football, no longer
wanted him? Who in their right mind would do that?
Some people have unpleasant things to say about George Allen,
but I'm not one of them. George Allen, the coach of last resort. The
most important thing to know about George Allen is that if anyone should
ask what the largest object in North America is, the answer is George
Allen's ego. So the key to making this deal with George was helping him
build up his ego - not that he would have admitted needing help. After
Duane Thomas failed to report to the Chargers in 1972, I started
building a case for him with George Allen. Every time I saw George at a
meeting, every time I spoke to him on the phone, I'd sigh and say, "You
know what I think, George? I think the only man in football capable of
handling Duane Thomas is George Allen. Really, I think you're the only
guy who can handle him. If Harland wasn't so dead set against it, I'd
trade him to you right now. But you know Harland, he thinks he can get
Thomas to play. Frankly I doubt it; I think you're the only one who
can. I promise you this, if I can ever talk Harland into trading him,
you're the first person I'll call."
George agreed with me completely. "See what youcan do," he'd
encourage. "Try to talk Harland into it."
"I'll try, but if he doesn't want to, there's nothing I can do
about it."
When we decided to get rid of Thomas, I told Harland, "Get on
the phone and call George Allen. Say that I've been on your ass and
that you really don't want to trade Thomas, but that you've finally got
to admit that you can't handle him. Tell him that you know that he's
probably the only guy in football who can bring out Thomas' talent -
make sure that you tell him that. Then tell him you wnat two
first-round draft picks. If I know George, he'll come back and offer
you a first and a second. Don't hang up the phone till you've made the
deal."
A few hours later I was having dinner at a San Diego restaurant
and Harland found me. "You've got to be clairvoyant," he said. "I
called Allen, I told him that he was the only guy in football who could
handle Thomas. He agreed with me. Then I told him we anted two firsts.
He offered me a first and a second. We went back and forth for a while,
I complained, but finally I took it."
I believe Allen got a half a season out of Duane Thomas, which
was a half a season more than anyone else could have gotten.

    Re .86;

Hoot! Here's the lowdown on Jeff Mills.

    Vitals: 6-4, 230. 4.77 OLB Nebraska

Notes: Lettered in 1987 after playing JV ball as a true freshman.
    Started in 88 & 89.

Positives: Excellent size and size potential. Will be 250 pounds when
he's done growing. Good speed. Does a nice job of stringing plays
out. Can control a tight end. Can play down. Improves every year.
Is just starting to scratch the surface of his potential. Shows
flashes. Young; just turned 21 in November.

Negatives: A little stiff in his movements. Does not always play to
his speed. Plays tall and loses leverage at times. Does not always
wrap up when he tackles. Needs a lot of work on pass coverage. Was
not an impact player in college.

Summary: Has talent but needs better technique and more experience.

What'dya think Hoot? Sounds like an up-n-comer who needs some
    experience to me.

    Subj:	RE: Chargers Draft

    Grade: B+

Chargers had no #2 or picks in the 4th or 5th rounds, but 17 choices
    overall.

If anyone can find gems in the late going, it's GM Bobby Beatherd.
His 1st pick, Junior Seau, can only bolster the AFC's top pass rush,
though some fear he's one-dimensional. Chargers didn't get an OL until
the 3rd round. G Chris Goetz, grabbed late, is the type of weight-room
fantatic that Beatherd loves (ala the Hogs in Washington..) Chargers did
well by getting QB John Friesz in the sixth.

Friesz really looked good in the all-star games and in the combines.
I was surprised he lasted that long. Some good talent in the late
    rounds.

JJ Flanagan is a speedster - don't know if he can adjust to pro-style,
having played out of the wishbone as the deep tailback at Colorado,
but, I could see him as a good KR and situational back. I also like
Kenny Berry, the DB picked late from Miami. Used to playing pro-style
    defense.

63.100McMahon "Released"BSS::G_MCINTOSHVom Hochland German ShepherdsThu Apr 26 1990 16:3123
The San Diego Chargers today "released" QB Jim McMahon.

Jim's contract ended at the end of last season, and the Chargers didn't
want to pay him what he wanted.

    To my knowledge, the only QB's in Chargerville are;
    		Starter Billy Joe Tolliver
    		Mark Vlasic
    		Draft Pick John Friesz
     		Dave Archer (I think)

Laufenberg last year was with Cowboys, and Mark Malone went to the
    Jets??

I have mixed feelings about this because (1) it shows they're committed
to having Billy Joe as their starter, but (2) we could use an
    established backup for Tolliver.

    Any comments?

Maybe it's time for McMahon to hang up his jock anyway. When you
count up the actual playing time he's had in the past 2-3 years
he must have made a hefty hourly wage. He wasn't that effective

I don't think so Jeff. The Chargers will no doubt revamp their offense

He could, however, help explain defensive schemes. But don't most

The Chargers are much better off without McMahon. Now they prove
they are committed to Tolliver as a starter, and he won't have
McMahon staring over his shoulder, waiting for him to screw up.

Also, it allows the Chargers to give more snaps in pre-season and
training camp to Friesz, to see if he can cut it at this level.
David Archer is a decent back-up, and Friesz can spend this year
learning, and the Chargers can spend the year evaluating him, as
    well as Tolliver.

It's not his blocking at all. I can however guessitmate, if you like.

    1. Bernstine was a RB before in college.
    2. He's had knee surgery before and they may be concerned about the
    	pounding.
    3. They've used him quasi-out of the backfield last year.
    4. They want a better running threat since speedy Anderson is gone.
    5. Arthur Cox - he's another TE on the team, and I just love this guy.
He's hugh, he must be 280, but he THINKS he's a wideout. He
catches the ball over the middle, or in the flat and takes off
thinking he's Steve Largent or something. You KNOW as a kid, he

Hi Steven. I have a new "appreciation" of Atlanta. Things are
cetainly different there, but different doesn't necessarily equate to
dislike. There were some things I liked very much and others that
make me very glad that I'm here in Colorado Springs.

Anyway, it's nice to be home.....and Dallas needs to watch out this
weekend because the Chargers are ready.

For those of you with dishes, the Cowboys / Chargers game typically is

It depends on how you feel about him. I believe that in 25 years this

The offensive line is the WORST part of the offense. Center Courtney
Hall is the best of the group and ther other 4 are a hodge-podge of
castoffs and draft picks. But last year they were considerably better
in the second half of the season than they were in the first half.

    Doc,

The Cowboys can still take on the Oilers and destroy them :-).
I've been hearing rumors that the run and shoot offense being used

    Bob,

I've become more of football fan because I've grown up and enjoy a good
football game, doesn't matter whos playing. I remember the days when
when all I was interested in watching was the Cowboys, now if its
football I want to watch. This holds true for all sports not just the
Cowboys and the NFL. Your hate for the Cowboys must come from dealing
with loud mouths bandwagon Cowboys fans who have since jumped ship.
I would much more prefer to talk football than to argue about it. I
know your only having good natured fun seeing the Cowboys down, but

I can see your point. And that's coming from a Giants fan (and what
more heated rivlary is there in football than Dallas - NY Giants???).

I think when your team is down you follow them loyally, but start
to watch other games a lot also. I did through 20+ years of being
a Giants fan. At first I'd watch other games in a clinical sense, perhaps
just watching the OLB all night, or the OT or OG. Then I'd pick
a team to root for.....

So, I see where Chuck is coming from, and have sympathy...even if

    Chuck,

I understood what you were saying. I watch the Monday Night Football
and as much if the post-season as possible even if the Eagles aren't
    playing.

I just find it *delicious* that the Cowboys are hurtin' so bad. After
all the years of "America's Team" and all that Texas hype, it's nice to
see them come down to earth.

During the 1987 season, the NFLPA went out on strike. Quite possibly
the all-time dumbest labor walkout. As you recall, the owners put
together the so-called "scab" teams. The Cowboys recruited a good
"scab" team and won most if not each of the three scab games. One of
the scab ganes was against the Eagles in Dallas. The Eagles had a
miserable scab team. Brutal. The Cowboys scabs ran it up big time.
Landry even put Dorsett and Danny White back in for some more points.

A few weeks later, the NFLPA gave up and the regular teams came back.
The first game back was the Cowboys at The Vet to meet the Eagles. You
want to talk "bloodthirsty" ??? That crowd that day was in a serious
"take no prisoners" mood. All business. Not even that many drunken
fights. My dad and I were there as usual.

Final minutes of the game. Score Eagles 30 Dallas 20. Randall
Cunningham kneeling down to kill the clock. I say to my father: "He's
gonna go long. Watch Quick in the end zone." Dad in his everloving
sportsmanship manner says: "He better not. That's bad."

Next play, Randall bends to his knee but straightens up before he hits
the turf and flings it long to Quick in the end zone. Ref called pass
interference. Eagles ball on the one. Give to Byars, up and over for
six points. Add a PAT and the clock hits triple zeroes. Final was
    Eagles 37-20.

My father was ticked. Said that it would come back to haunt us. I was
crying. I was never so happy at a football game. All the years of
torment wiped away in a beautiful ending. I argued that they had done
it to us not three weeks ago.

In the post-game press conference, a reporter asked His Rudeness, Buddy
Ryan, if he had deliberately run up the score. Ryan answered with a
    snort: "You're damn right I did. Weren't you watching ???". I loved
it. Finally, a coach who told the honest truth. None of this wimpy
"we just didn't get the breaks today ..." stuff.

The Eagles have not lost to the Cowboys since. Five straight victories
and counting. Including that stupid Bounty Bowl nonsense. Do I
believe Ryan sent Jesse Small after Luis Zendejas ??? Hell yes I do.
That's been the code of the NFL since George Halas was lacing up his
    spikes.

The Eagles-Cowboys rivalry is one of the best. To see them go 1-15 is
pure joy. Any of you guys remember that note I wrote two years ago
where I sold my soul to the devil in exchange for the Cowboys to suck
wind ??? One of my proudest moments ...

The Chargers have released J.J. Flannigan, at J.J.'s request. Seems
the Chargers tried to convert JJ from a running back to a wide receiver
and he wasn't happy, and wasn't doing very well. He didn't play in any
of the scrimmages or the first preseason game, so they released him,
hoping that he'll catch on elsewhere.

I'm currently on vacation this week, but decided to log in from home
    and take a poke around.

Chargers pretty much had their way with the Rams on Saturday night.
The first teams played for mosty of the first half and the score at
half was 17-0 Chargers. Then the 2nd and 3rd stringers came in and
the score went through the roof. Chargers won 30-27.

Jim Carney, placekicker in a fight with Fuad Reveiz (formerly from
Miami), missed a 28 yard FG and an extra point. Fuad made everything
    he was given.

For you FFL'ers...Bernstine is being played at RB, and did very well.
He had 94 yards for the night. The first time he touched the ball he
went 64 yards for a TD. Butts didn't play, Billy Ray Smith was
out, Leslie O'Neal wasn't signed and JrSeau still isn't signed.

I found the game on satellite and Dan Fouts was the announcer. That
was neat. At halftime, Bethard said that Seau's agent made a proposal
to the Chargers which just angered the Chargers, so they are apparently
    far, far away.

    O'Neal was signed on Monday.

Next Saturday, the game is in San Diego against the 49ers. That'll
    provide another good test.

Mike, these two guys aren't really being showcased yet because of the
early nature of preseason, although both have played the past two
games. Billy Joe is a hot and cold type player who looked better in
the Rams game than he did in the Cowboy game. Tolliver was 10 for 20
for 124 yards and no interceptions against the Rams. Anthony Miller
will blossom this year I believe. He's good and will only get better.

There're some pieces of the puzzle you're overlooking:

    1. The night before the draft Seau called Bethard and pleaded with
Bethard to draft him. He wants to play and play for the
    	Chargers.

1a. Seau's home is in San Diego.

    2. Seau came out as a junior and skipped his senior year. Not to sit
        out but to play.

All of that, coupled with the fact that Bethard's not a con artist and
pretty much means what he says, signalled a good deal for Seau. He
badly wants to play and now he gets to play for a good defense.

FYI, the Charger D has 5 #1 picks on it: Billy Ray Smith, Gill Byrd,
Leslie O'Neal, Burt Grossman and now Junior Seau.

The Chargers beat the 49ers tonight 29-28 in a pretty hard fought
battle. Here's a quick rundown of the game.

    1st Quarter:
49ers received kickoff and had to punt.
Tolliver to A.Miller on what looked to be about a 35 yard TD pass.
    			San Diego 7, 49ers 0
Montana hit Rice on a BEAUTIFUL post pattern.
    			San Diego 7, 49ers 7

    2nd Quarter:
Montana hit Rice deep in the endzone.
    			San Diego 7, 49ers 14
Chargers made a short (<20 yards) FG.
    			San Diego 10, 49ers 14
49ers have to punt. Snap is over punters head. He recovers the
ball and ran it out the back of the endzone. Safety.

Raiders against the Chargers Saturday. Should be a defensive battle
as both teams have good defenses but need some help offensively.
I think the Raiders have the edge though, because their offense
is a little better and their special teams rule. Should be a good
    game either way.

The Chargers, thus far this preseason, have scored 28, 30
and 29 points against Dallas, Rams, and 49ers respectively. I
would say that's a pretty good offensive showing, albeit in
    preseason.

Defensive battle? I not so sure.

Don't count on them doing so well against the Raiders as they have
    allowed 17, 13, 16, and 3 points, against the Saints, 49'ers,
Cowboys, and Bears dis-respectively. The reason I think it's going
to be a defensive battle is because they usually are between these
two teams, last time they played the final score was 14-12 San Diego,
Which is a typical score each time they play. I also have confidence
that the Raiders 'D' can shut down the Chargers offense but the
Chargers also have an excellent defense which leads me to my
    'concusion'.

Chargers got steamed by Raiders on Saturday afternoon. The score, if
memory serves, was 34-7, and the Raiders looked great. They ran the
ball all through the #1 defense and gained over 500 yards total
offense. Dan Fouts, the color man for the announcement team, said it
looked as though the Chargers were moving in slow motion. It almost
looked like a scrimmage. Anyway, the Raiders looked great, and just
beat the snot out of the Chargers. My only hope, is that this beating
will propel them into a new level on intensity for the first regular
season game of the year in Dallas.

I forgot to mention that in his 2nd play from scrimmage, Junior Seau
got ejected from the game for unneccesary roughness against the
    Raiders. Kinda funny.

Yesterday the Chargers cut a group of folks, with the most notable
being Thomas Sanders, Darren Nelson and Tim Spencer, all running backs.
I'm may be missing something, but that leaves them with Marion Butts,
Rod Bernstine and Ronnie Harmon. It's a good trio, but where's the
    depth.

The Chargers claimed Anthony Shelton, DB, off waivers. Anyone know
    anything about this guy?

S.D. is gonna have their hands full this weekend with the Cowpokes,

63.210Predicted AFC West Final StandingsBSS::G_MCINTOSHVom Hochland German ShepherdsThu Sep 06 1990 11:3025
Well, I guess it's time for me to put up regarding the AFC West final
standings for this year. After considerable analysis, I have decided
    the following:

    	FINAL AFC WEST STANDINGS 1990-91
        ********************************

    	1. Denver, 12-4	I expect Denver to win the AFC West with a
record of 12-4 or 13-3, thereabouts.
    	2. San Diego,	10-6	SD will surprise all the theoretical
experts. Their D is very strong and the O
will come together through the season.
    	3. Kansas City 9-7 It's a battle w/SD. These two teams are
VERY similar. KC has no QB!
    	4. Raiders 7-9 Not as strong as they look in PreSeason.
But they could pull it ALL together and
    				move into #2 spot.
    	5. Seattle 4-12 A bad team. Where's the O, where's the D?

There you have it. Accept it as gospel, and know that, in your heart,
I am right. No hype here. It's just fact!

That's close Dinzy, pretty close to the way I see it also.

Raiders 10-6 If this were a horse race I'd box 'em. To be
Broncos 10-6 sure, these two teams will come in 1st and 2nd.

Chiefs 8-8 I don't think the Chiefs are all that everybodies
cracking them up to be ..... just yet. I mean
there's no secret to their success, if you stop
                       Okoye you stop the Chiefs.

    Chargers 8-8 They're improving, they've got a good defense,
but their offense needs help. The front office
changes will help, but those results are still
                       down the road.

Seahawks 4-12 The only bright spot about their season is gonna
be their position in next years draft.

Denver 13-3 The Broncos had some young players last year that
will be better this year, and the offense should
be scoring a lot of points.

Kansas City 9-7 The Chiefs really aren't close to competing for
the AFC Championship, but their defense will keep
them in most games. Will challenge for a
                          wild-card spot.

Los Angeles 9-7 The Raiders have some real talent on offense at
the skill positions-except the most important
one, quarterback. They seem to have a reborn
attitude with Shell at the helm. Should get a
                          wild-spot.
San Diego 7-9 One of the league's top defenses, but on offense
there's not much after Anthony Miller. With a
few breaks here and there, they could also
                          challenge for a wild-card spot.

Seattle 4-12 This is a bad team. Krieg's heydays are over,
and the defense is one of the league's worst.

Well I hand it to the Cowboys. They beat the Chargers 17-14.

Some interesting coaching blunders on the part of the Chargers:

    1. They decided to start Mark Vlasic and not Billy Joe Tolliver.
Vlasic is good, but not an emotional leader.

    2. With 5 minutes left in the game, Chargers leading 14-10, 4th down
and about 7, Chargers ready to punt, they snapped the ball to the
up back (a linebacker) who tried to run for the 1st down, and
didn't make it. Cowboys took over at mid-field.

    3. On the last series of downs for the Chargers with less than 1
minute left in the game, deep in their own zone (about the 15)
the coaches decided to put Tolliver into the game. Gimme a break.
They guy is cold as ice and the Dallas D was already smelling
    	victory.

Additional note: Fuad Reveiz missed a 31 yard FG.
    Congratulations to the Cowboys!

Everyone in this conference knows I am not subject to rash comments, and
mindless "my team's better than yours" conversations. I pretty much
state the facts, enjoy the football competition and provide summaries

The Chargers found that Courtney Hall was such a good athlete that he
was able to play other parts on the offensive line. They drafted a
kid named Frank Cornish from UCLA, who is a pretty good center, so they
put him at center and moved Courtney to LOG. Now they have 2 slots
    solidly filled instead of 1.

The O-Line now looks like this:

Well, the latest odds I've seen shows the Chargers favored over the
Oilers by 2 or 3 or something like that. But I don't know why.

The Oilers are the #1 offense and #1 defense in the AFC. Hill is the
leading receiver in the NFL. So why are the Chargers favored? I don't

    Glenn,

I'm actually in San Diego right now on an assignment and the papers are
    all over this story.

Apparently, Phillips was assaulted outside a Mission Beach restaurant
at about 1:00am on Wednesday. He had left the restaurant with his
dinner companion, a woman who was not his wife.

It appears to be pre-meditated since the three white assailants pulled
up in a car just as Phillips left the place, attacked him, and then
drove off. They also smashed up Phillips' car pretty bad.

Phillips has a fractured skull, nose and eye socket. He also has
broken ribs and a concussion. He's got surgery scheduled for today and
is in intensive care right now.

One of the attackers was wearing steel-toed boots. The police have
witnesses and descriptions but no suspects. No motives have been
established but robbery has been ruled out since they didn't take
    anything from Phillips.

Well the Chargers bit the dust against the Steelers this weekend and it
really brought forth the problem for the Chargers and that's that they
have no offensive innovation. It appears the Chargers have 2 offensive
    plays:
    		1. Hand the ball off (Butts, Bernstine)
    		2. Go deep to Anthony Miller.

That's it! Screen play? What's that? Hit Darrin Nelson in the flat?
Never heard of it! Buttonhooks? Down and In? Down and Out? Hit the
TE 3 yards over the line for a quick 7 yards? FORGET IT!! The ghosts
of offenses past (Hadl to Alworth, Fouts to Winslow) are rolling over
    in their graves.

With no offense, the defense was on the field alot and just lost it.
    Can't blame the defense though.

Congratulations to the Steelers and their fans. I'd like to hear how
some of the Steeler fans interpreted the game.

63.270Pittsburgh was just ready to go for brokeSHALOT::MEDVIDMurky buckets, monsewer!Mon Oct 08 1990 11:4324
    OK, Gleen, here goes:

I thought the Chargers had a very good ground attack but when the
Steelers went up by all those points, San Diego had to abandon it. I
really thought San Diego was taking a big chance going for that 4th
down conversion in the middle of the third quarter. They got lucky
when the Steelers fumbled in the end zone. Carnell Lake made a boob
move by intercepting the 4th down pass on the 2 yardline rather than
    just knocking it down.

San Diego's defense played pretty well, especially Seau. I think the
bottom line was that the Steelers were ready to score a TD and once
Hoge and Worley were given the ball for a change, look what happens.
The Chargers were beaten by Pittsburgh's desire to establish the
    offense finally.

Pittsburgh's passing game still didn't look clean. Except for the
Brister audible for the long pass to Stone, there were still no big
passing plays. It was good to see Lipps get back into the action.

I don't think the Chargers offense is as bad as you think.
Pittsburgh's defense is a good one that just didn't give up much.

Yes, I would agree the Sand Diego defense wore down, espcecially in
light of the fact that Strom was guiding the Steelers. The Chargers
had a chance to come back after the fumble recovery in the endzone, but
the defense let Pittsburgh run all over them.

The blocked punt for a safety was the killer, though, in my opinion.

Well I'm pretty pleased with the Chargers performance in the win over
    the Jets.

They stayed with the run, threw the ball short to medium most of
the time and actually DID throw a screen pass AND to the back in
the flat. Both of those went for 10+ yards for first downs.

It was a good game for the Chargers and MAY indicate a "return to

Should be a good game this week vs. the Hawks. I'm looking for Kreig to
exploit the SD secondary but Sd should have no real problems running the
ball vs. the Hawks. I don't expect Fenner to be able to do much against the SD
linebackers.

The big problem the Hawks are having is that Brian Blades has not stepped
forward and become the pass threat he was supposed to. SKansi has been taking
a lot of the inside routes but Blades has not been effective deep.

How has the SD defense been lately Glen ?

Grossman (8 sacks) and O'Neal (5.5 sacks) are doing well in the
sack department. The entire Charger D has 25 sacks thus far.
There's speculation that next year Seau will play outside because
he's so much more dominating outside. I don't understand why he didn't
play outside this year anyway. Billy Ray has played inside before, in

    What does

-< Once again, you forgot to finish your not, Glenn >-

    mean? I don't get it.

Chargers played well against the Seahawks. Had Tolliver been on
target, however, the score would have really swelled.

Chargers have played very well in their last 4 ballgames against the
Jets, Raiders, TB and now Seahawks. Offense has been run oriented with
pretty long time-cosuming drives. Defense has applied the pressure.
They've come a long way since the season began. D now leads the league
    with 29 sacks.

    Next week....Broncos in Chargerville.

Chargers looked mighty good against the SeaChickens Glen. Is Tolliver always
that erratic or was this just a bad game for him? Namath in the announcing
booth was getting on his case all game. I agree that he has a cannon for an
arm but his accuracy was way off on a lot of passes this game.

If the chargers go against a defense that is stacked against the run they
could have a tough game. Is the Pickle (vlasic) any good at QB?

Butts and Berstein both looked good but the chargers should avoid running
Ronnie Harmon up the middle. He could get squashed in there. Keep him for
catching out of the backfield and running sweeps.

Chrager defense looked awsome. Seau,O'Neal and Grossman totally dominated the
line of scrimmage. Kreig was hurried all day and once again Brian Blades was
nowhere to be found.

Good game for the Chargers......

The Kingdome sells out for almost every SeaChicken Game. People here are rabid
Hawks fans so we get the "privelege" of seeing them on TV everytime they are

So far this year Tolliver's accuracy has been poor. But he's a streaky
type of player, hot for a half, cold for a half, etc. So far this year

Chargers played solid football again and beat the Broncos 19-7. A
problem that I see here is that they got 4 FG's and then 1 TD. They
HAVE to start getting the TD's when in the red zone. In this game, in
my opinion, the Chargers could have had 3 TD's and 2 FG's...27-7.

Good game next week with the Chargers(5-5) @ Kansas City(5-4).

Glen, I'm surprised you actually listened to that horrible Christensen.
You had the rare alternative of catching the Charger game on the radio
    yesterday.

Extremely disappointed in Denver's showing yesterday, not to take
anything from the Chargers. SD is suddenly only 1.5 games behind the
Faids. When Denver was down 19-7 but got a first-and-goal inside the
1, was that sweep on first down possibly the worst choice of a
play-call ever? Even so, Denver probably would've needed an onside
kick anyway. For the 3rd time this year the Faids lose, but the
Broncos fail to take advantage and get back into the AFC West race.

Joe, I thought the sweep play was an outstanding choice. It allowed us

    thoughtful.

Med - You're right about Walsh. But my gripe with Walsh's
commentatorship (is that a word?) isn't Walsh, it's his sidekick. When

This is a big time battle of the monster AFC lines...

Chargers are on a roll...KC is coming off a tough loss to the SeaHawks and
haven't been racking up the points lately...

Believe it or not I think this one will come down to the QB's. Which ever qb
can complete enough passes to open up the running game will win. DeBerg
has been pretty miserable for the last 4 weeks but Tolliver hasn't exactly lit
the world on fire. Both have some decent receivers to throw to but haven't
used them.

I predict the chargers win on a lte field goal 17-14....

The Okoye/Word backfield won't have any impact unless they can each put their
egos aside and block for each other.....The problem is that neither of them
has ever been asked to block before so I can't see it happening in 1 week.

Should be a low scoring game consisting mainly of field goals. Both
teams have great defenses and running attacks, but could use a little
help at QB. I don't expect either teams running game to have a great
day, and I think that this game will be decided by the field goal
kickers, the special teams, and the team that capitalizes on turnovers.
The weather could also be a factor. Does anybody know what the forecast

Hi Jeff. Both Bernstine and Butts played.

Chargers got killed by the Chiefs over the weekend and the single most
telling statement is that the Chiefs stopped the running game cold.
Charger passing offense wasn't up to the task, as the interceptions
show, and the final score was 27-10.

    Just some comments:

    1. Tolliver has to learn to throw off his front foot. All day long
he was throwing off his back foot. Get the snap, backpeddle,
set-up and then throw. The set-up part didn't occur often, thus
    	high throws all day.

    2. The Chargers need to get rid of Quinn Early. This receiver is on
the other side of Anthony Miller and is so bad that he couldn't
    	catch a cold.

    3. The Chargers need a more imaginative offense at times. The running
game is good, but it's either run or pass to Miller. There's more
to offense than just those two plays.

    4. The Chargers need a #1 rated cornerback at the opposite corner
from Gill Byrd to help solidify the defense.

Cox and his 2 fumbles because he's come through sooo many times before,
but the thing that really burns my shorts is that the Chargers should

That inadvertant whistle was a bad one. The punt returner never had
possession of the ball. You have to feel bad for Cox. On his fumble
in OT, you could see him try to put both arms around the ball, but he

It's time to lose your head coach again and get into the Bill Walsh Lottery

The Charger's had superior talent on the defensive side of the ball and with

along the lines of "that's fine, but I'd rather it was played in
    the United States".

Can anyone confirm? I would put that down as a great sports quote...

I hadn't heard that, but it's pretty funny.

He must have taken the same geography class T and Merril Hoge took in
high school. Hoge thought Canada was part of the US. T...well,
    there's too many to list.

I also heard that Butts hurt his ankle and is out for the remainder of
the regular season. Puts a real damper on his charge of the NFL
    rushing title.

Where did you hear that Dan?

re Hawaii: Maybe Butts has a wittier humor than you think. It's
conceivable, but probably not likely, that he made that comment as a
    joke.
