I doubt that Ditka's (we're a loosy team) pro approach would work
in college coaching. He tried a new approach after the Lions beat

Mark Carrier #1 pick from USC won the starting job. Bears tried to

Duerson looked real slow in the second half of last year when the

Subject: Bears to start Harbaugh
Date: 3 Sep 90 19:40:34 GMT

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (UPI) -- Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka ended
speculation Monday on his team's lingering quarterback question, naming
Jim Harbaugh the starter for the season-opener.
Ditka refused to address why Harbaugh got the call over Mike
Tomczak after both former Big Ten quarterbacks played to a draw in the
five exhibition games.
``I went to Oz, and I saw the wizard,'' Ditka said in explaining
the revelation.
Also Monday, the Bears cut 11 players, the most notable being
third-year linebacker Troy Johnson and fourth-year defensive tackle Dick
Chapura. Chapura started the final three games of 1989, but both played
primarily reserve roles.
The cuts reduced the Bears roster to 48, one above the NFL-maximum.
The organization was granted a two-week roster exemption for Steve
McMichael, who joined the team last week after a lengthy holdout. Ditka
said McMichael will play, but not start, Sunday against the Seattle
Seahawks.
Harbaugh, the 26th player taken in the 1987 draft after being named
UPI's Big Ten MVP as a senior at Michigan, has started just seven games
in three seasons. He is 2-5 for his career, including 1-4 in 1989 after
Tomczak faltered and lost his starting role.
``I feel determined to do well,'' Harbaugh said. ``I'm looking
forward to the challenge. I think there's always pressure at the
quarterback position to do well and I'll be in there as long as I'm
playing well.''
Ditka reinforced that idea when he said he still planned on playing
two quarterbacks and maybe three this season. Rookie Peter Tom Willis is
the third QB on the roster.
Tomczak, who won the starting role a year ago after Jim McMahon was
traded to San Diego during the preseason, accepted Ditka's decision.
``My first reaction obviously is disappointment,'' Tomczak said.
``But my second reaction is I'm a little relieved because this is a
decision that has weighed heavily. There's nothing much you can really
do about it now. You have to swallow your pride and your ego and realize
there are still a lot of games to be played and hopefully you'll get
another opportunity.''
``By no means being named the starter is where my goals end for the
year,'' said Harbaugh. ``I've got a lot to prove to the people, a lot to
prove to the coaches, a lot to prove to the players and the fans of
Chicago.''
Also among the players waived Monday were fullbacks Scott Williams
and Pat Chaffey, offensive tackle Chris Dyko, wide receivers Tom Waddle
and Quintin Smith, cornerback John Mangum, defensive end Brent White and
linebacker Glenell Sanders. Wide receiver Tony Moss was placed on the
waived-injured list.
Ditka said Waddle will be brought back, however, after decisions
are made on linebacker Dante Jones and wide receiver Glen Kozlowski.
Both are candidates for injured reserve, Jones because of a sprained
knee and Kozlowski a leg bruise.
The cut of Chapura left the Bears with five defensive tackles,
including veterans McMichael, Dan Hampton and William Perry and rookies
Fred Washington and Tim Ryan. Hampton and Perry will start the opener.
``They decided they had too many tackles, so I got to go and find
work elsewhere,'' said Chapura, a 10th-round draft choice out of
Missouri in 1987. ``No hard feelings.''
Ditka called it his toughest cut.
Johnson also realized he ``got caught up in a numbers game,'' with
the Bears keeping seven linebackers.
Some of the players on the bubble that made the team for now
include running back James Rouse, who will be the backup fullback, and
tight end James Coley, giving the Bears three tight ends. Rookie running
back Johnny Bailey and second-year back Mark Green also made the squad,
as did rookie defensive end Terry Price, a 10th-round draft choice.

	Favorite -- Chicago by 6.
	Turf -- Natural.
Seahawks Coach Chuck Knox -- ``We'll use some run-and-shoot but not
the whole picture.''
Bears Coach Mike Ditka -- ``They're really a completely different
ballclub. This is probably the changing of the guard in Seattle.''
Seahawks offense -- QB Dave Krieg retained his starting role with a
stellar pre-season. He completed 80 percent of his passes for 296 yards,
although he did not throw a TD. WR Brian Blades is the favorite target
with Steve Largent in retirement. RB Curt Warner is gone to Plan B, and
FB John L. Williams takes over the ground attack.
Bears defense -- Injuries and age resulted in a collapse from a
second overall ranking in 1988 to 25th in 1989. DT Dan Hampton is back
after a 10th knee operation, but he struggled in the pre-season and sat
out the final game with soreness. Veteran DT Steve McMichael ended his
lengthy holdout and will see his first action of the summer. Pro Bowler
Mike Singletary leads the linebacking corps.
Bears offense -- Unproven 1987 first-round draft pick Jim Harbaugh
gets the start at QB, although there's not much question Mike Tomczak
will be in if Harbaugh stumbles. All-Pro RB Neal Anderson, the offensive
leader, coming off a season in which he rushed for 1,275 yards, scored
15 TDs and caught 50 passes.
Seahawks defense -- Highly touted rookie DT Cortez Kennedy also
ended a lengthy holdout and, without even playing in a pre-season game,
could start. Knox might start three rookies on defense, including LB
Terry Wooden and SS Robert Blackmon. Controversial LB Brian Bosworth is
out of football.
Key matchups -- Seattle DT Cortez Kennedy vs. G Mark Bortz; Seattle
WRs Brian Blades and Tommy Kane vs. second-year CBs Donnell Woolford and
Lemuel Stinson; Seattle QB Dave Krieg vs. rookie FS Mark Carrier.
Key injuries -- Seattle: LB David Wyman (knee) doubtful. Chicago:
None.
Head-to-head -- Seahawks hold a 4-1 edge in the series.
Streaks -- Seahawks have won last four meetings. Bears lost last six
games of 1989 but currently own an NFC-best six-game winning streak in
season openers, tying the New England Patriots for the longest streak in
the NFL. Seahawks won last four exhibition games.

The Bears are gonna need more than field goals to win this weekend.
The Raider defense has been playing pretty good against both the
run and the pass allowing only 25 points so far this season. The
Bears defense also has been playing great allowing only 29 points
so far. Both teams could use some help in the QB position on offense,
but I think this weekend that Schroeder will have a better day than
Harbaugh, giving the Raiders a win by seven or more.

No crow for me thanks, I'll just be having some of that freshly
butchered bear meat. As far as, 'No offense against a great defense,
like they have yet to face.' is concerned, well the same argument
can be made for the Raiders. Besides that, last year the Donks
had the 3rd best defense in the league, with Seattle coming in 14th,
and the Steelers were 19th, while the Bears were rated 25th. (Raiders
were 10th by the way) The Raiders managed to overcome those defenses
as they will the Bears this weekend. Ditka really knows how to get his
'monsters that are middle-aged'(t.m.) psyched at the begginning of
the season as is evidenced by their 4-0 start last year, but they're
getting tired now and they're just about ready to lay down and play
