BOSTON (UPI) -- The New York Yankees, in serious need of help behind
the plate, Monday acquired catcher Matt Nokes from the Detroit Tigers
for pitchers Lance McCullers and Clay Parker.
Nokes is batting .270 with three home runs and eight RBI. He made
15 starts behind the plate, throwing out 4 of 14 base stealers.
In his more than three years in the majors, Nokes, 26, has a career
average of .266 with 63 homers and 194 RBI. Nokes, a left-handed batter,
was obtained by the Tigers in a six-player trade with San Francisco in
1985.
The Tigers could afford to trade Nokes with regular catcher Mike
Heath hitting .349, second in the American League.
This season the Yankees turned over their catching job to Bob
Geren. After 10 years in the minor leagues, he hit .288 in 65 games last
year with the Yankees to earn the No. 1 catching spot. But after 30
games he was batting only .218 with three homers and eight RBI. Rick
Cerone, 36, also received time behind the plate.
McCullers, 26, appeared in nine games this year, all in relief. He
compiled a 3.60 ERA in 15 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander was
acquired by the Yankees after the 1988 season, coming from San Diego
with outfielder Stanley Jefferson and pitcher Jimmy Jones for outfielder
Jack Clark and pitcher Pat Clements.
Parker, a right-hander, has been with the Yankees' Triple-A farm
team, Columbus of the International League, since May 15. In five games
with the Yankees this year, he was 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA.

When in the world will George realize that there are some years
when a team needs to concentrate on rebuilding? This Yankee team
is not a contender and any baseball person worth his/her salt would
    agree with this.

The Yankees need to foster an atmosphere of teamwork with an
understanding that the young players know they will get a fair shot.
They need to be developed at the major league level. The Columbus
shuttle does NOT work if you use it for 5 or 6 players on a regular
basis. It was OK when the Yankees were packed with talent and only
    had a hole or 2.

But this team has talent that should be nurtured and tutored without
the pressure from an owner who expects his team will win it all
every day of every year. It's nice to think but unrealistic in real
    life.

George has to let his GM alone and allow him to make decisions based
on baseball talent and development rather than immediate dividends.

There's something wrong when you have the farm system the Yankees
have in Columbus and Albany and then, at the major league level
things go awry. Certainly the Mets handle things better as do the
    Orioles.

But, hey, it sure is great whenever the Red Sox can beat the Yankees,
    no matter what the circumstances.

Although I am a die hard Red Sox fan, I always admired the
Yankees as one of the great all-time teams. Clearly, they've
won more titles 8^)

It is unfortunate that the Yankees are owned by George Steinbrenner,
because he has taken what was once a proud team, and basically
driven them into the ground with his shenanigans...

That's really too bad.

Ha ha, saw an interesting idea yesterday about the Yanks and George.

The writer posed this thought: Perhaps George is purposefully
destroying his team so they can't win while he is on suspension
for consorting with gamblers. If they did go on a tear while he
was out, then maybe he'd get the blame for their performance when
    he's there.

    Farfetched, but funny.

re: Boston Red Sox

They have as much talent as anyone in the division, and SHOULD win it, but
will they ? Can Harris and Kiecker and Gardner be 3/5s of a division-winning
rotation ? Is Morgan's (over)use of Reardon a sign of his true managerial
skills ?

The Red Sox not winning the AL East in 1990 will be more tragic than anything
that happens to the NY Yankees.

Yeah, but Mac, my comments are based on what I'm seeing now (ie: Harris,

now picking Boston to win it.

Besides, other than Toronto and NY, everyone in the division was picked

Their goal isn't to get back into the pennant race. They're rebuilding.
It's time to dump veterans (Hawkins, LaPoint, Righetti ?, Leary ?,
Barfield ?) for prospects, evaluate kids (Maas, Leyritz, Meulens ?,
Leiter ?, Adkins ?), and add pitching and a big bat thru free agency.

With them needing both a starter and a RH bat with power (Jesse Barfield),
it seems the Yanks have what they need. But what would the Yanks get

threatening to take back the $2 million signing bonus from Deion

remainder of this season and all of next. Sanders' comments were
something to effect of, "They'll have to take a wing of my mom's

First of all, what do the Yankees see in this guy that merits a

Sanders will be honoring his contract with the Falcons. There were
rumors that the Yanks would try and buy extra time for Neon to play
baseball by paying him a bundle to finish the season as well as paying
any fines he might incur. I too question what the Yanks saw in this
guy. It appears to me that he only got brought to the show at this
point in his career for his marquee value (or perhaps to discourage him
from playing football). A couple of years on the farm would probably
    have been alot of good.

Steinbrenner's last official act was to withdraw the contract offer to
Sanders. Sanders immediately packed his bags for Atlanta, blasting his
teammates on his way out the door(Didn't have the moxie to say it when he'd
have to face them the next day).

What do the Yanks see in him? I guess an athlete with blazing speed.
They see him roaming CF, tracking down every ball that's hit, stealing 70-90
bases, with maybe 10 HRs. The problem? His ego is so big, he can't believe
he could actually learn something in the minors, and Steinbrenner at least
was willing to feed the kid's ego by letting take up a roster spot.

Think, Deion.
Didn't 4 years of college football prepare you for the NFL? Baseball needs a
similar investment in your time to learn the game.

Anyway, the kid shows flashes and makes brilliant plays 2 or 3 times
a week. The rest of the time he struggles, like every kid who should be
in AA ball would.

I think Mac and Jim M. hit the nail on the head re "Not Ready For Prime
Time" Sanders and baseball. Deion has potential no question, but is
far from a polished baseball player at this point in time. Sanders
needs more minor league seasoning before he can be a consistently
productive player on the major league level; seasoning which his ego
won't allow him to go through. With several young OF prospects now
with the Yanks or within a year of the big leagues (Maas, Azocar,
Meulens, and Williams among others), I don't think it's that big a loss
    if Sanders does not return.

mind to make a full-time commitment to baseball. The Yankees see
future stardom for him, but I'm sure they feel he'll achieve it
only by playing baseball full-time.

He's spent parts of the last 2 seasons at AAA, and has hit .300
consistently at that level. I'm sure that in his mind he's ready
for the majors. He certainly should be labeled a "prospect",
but his rush to the majors, and the $ he was demanding, aren't
right.

In a related situation, is Todd Van Poppel's contract appropriate ?
He hadn't even thrown a professional pitch yet ?

But don't you think Mattingly may have done the team more harm than
good by keeping himself in the lineup? Maybe if he went on the DL
in May, he'd be back by now.

If Don Mattingly never returns to previous form, does he belong in the
Hall of Fame? That will be a difficult question, I believe, for the
voters. He certainly was one of the best players in baseball for several
years. But does his career to this point warrant HOF INDUCTION -{ not

10 HR. (The record was previously held by George Scott, who reached 10

Sam Horn held the record for quickest to 13...he did it in 123 ABs.

Paul, I believe Maas got to 10 HRs in 77 ABs, beating Jeff Hostetler's

re .154, those are the numbers that they showed on the screen during
Saturday's Yanks-A's game....whatever the correct figures are, Maas is
off to a riproaring start. He certainly won't average 1 HR/8-9 AB over
the rest of his career, but it's certainly reasonable to expect 25-30
HR a season from Maas (he was a .280-.290 BA/15-20 HR a year man in the
minors, and Yankee Stadium is a good HR park for a lefty pull hitter).

Well, the Japanese ballparks ARE smaller (90 meters=300 feet down the
line), then again, a guy who's 5-11 is considered "big". The Japanese
game is very different than the US game, and Japanese players will
readily admit that they are not of the same calibre as the top American
(and Latin American) players. However, like international basketball,
other nations are catching up with the US. Japanese teams and players
come here for spring training to learn from the US teams, and maybe
some day they will be on par. No one can dispute their work ethic, so I
don't think that will be TOO far away.

Keep in mind that Maas' is not a pure power hitter. He's a good contact
hitter, with a beautiful uppercut swing. Darrell Evans (a terrific
pull-hitter) has been teaching Maas to open his stance, so that he can
pull more consistently (as he's done with Matt Nokes). Evans' instruction,
along with Maas' natural swing should make him an awesome Yankee Stadium
HR hitter, and a decent HR hitter elsewhere.

Ah yess.... Sam Horn, who you could describe in four words:

		Big Stick, No Glove

I saw that man botch plays at 1B that a little leaguer could have made
blindfolded.

The only reason I don't think Maas will fit in that vane is that his
minors stats seem consistent, and he doesn't have a Sam Horn
reputation. Of course, in the Yank-me organization, *anything's* possible!
