Note that two(?) weeks after, if they keep to pattern, they will run one
on maximum speed, most of which is a/c and cars and boats, but there
IS one rr segment, in the second halfhour, i think, of about 10 minutes.

  Either tonight or tomorrow night (I don't have the listing handy), PBS is
running an "American Experience" program on the New York subways. Sounds 
better than the excellent "Rivers of Steel" which PBS ran a few years ago.

  The PBS program on the New York subways ran last night. I liked "Rivers of
Steel" a little better. The important stuff is covered in both programs, but
each has a lot of unique stuff too.
  Beantowners take pride in saying that the Central Artery/Tunnel project
is the biggest public works project in U.S. history. Not so. The first New
York subway was much a much bigger project. The ONLY thing that makes the
Central Artery project bigger is that we have had 90 years of inflation, so
the dollar cost is higher.
  One thing I don't recall either subway program mentioning was how many
cubic yards of dirt were moved. That would be interesting to compare with
the Central Artery, Third Harbor Tunnel, and tunnel connector combined.

    The New York SUbway was, i think a PRIVATE project.  A for profit
    enterpise, only taken over by the NY Citty gummint in recent years...

    Well, if you consider the 1930s recent, I suppose the city did take it
    over recently.

    its more recent than the date of construction, which was, i think the
