3737.0. "SCAN TIME ON TZ88" by CHEFS::GALLAGHER_D () Sat Apr 26 1997 18:10

    I have read note 971 about scan and access times with interest. I have
    had a similar query from a customer recently but now we are talking
    about TZ88 drives.

    So my questions are:

    1. Do the principles set out in 971 still apply in terms of access.

    2. Have the 2 to 3 minutes end-to-end timings been radically reduced by
    the improvement in DLT technology/density? Or are they about the same?

    Thanks for any help.

    regards
    David Gallagher

	DLT seek times to a file are limited by the tape fast movement
	speed. Once at the file the software must then skip records
	to get to the desired data, this is done at read speed.

	I don't have the tape speeds but the claimed average file
	access time is 45-68 seconds depending on the drive and
	media type. I didn't see worst case access listed in the
	specs.
