Regarding the following announce a customer asked me if DIGITAL has
any plan to produce tape drive and tape library based on the new
Philips NCTP technology ?

October 28 - Philips Laser Magnetic Storage (Philips LMS) announced
a new tape technology, NCTP. Transfer rate is 10MB/sec.
Capacity is 20GB, uncompressed, per cartridge. NCTP stores data at
$.004 per megabyte. The cartridges have 25 times more capacity
than the previous generation 36--track cartridge and deliver higher
performance and capacity than alternatives - at a fraction of the
price of other high--end choices. List price is $16,995. NCTP will be
available in limited quantities in 1Q97 and will be in full production
in 2Q97.
