3635.0. "Backup to TLZ06, the system hang." by ZPOVC::DAIVC::HERU () Tue Jan 28 1997 05:35

 Hello...

I am Heru, my customer PT.AMT has problem with their MV3100-90
when doing backup a file (+/- 800000 blocks) to internal DAT drive
(TLZ06) the machine hang. Need to restart the machine for continuing
 operation.

The machine has H/W configuration :
 - 3 disks + TLZ06 + TK50 (external) in SCSI bus port A
 - 5 disks in SCSI bus port B
 - Memory 64 MB

VMS version V5.5-2H4, and user account has UAF parameters below:

 Fillm : 100 WSdef : 4000
 BIOlm : 150 WSextent : 16000
 Enqlm : 2000 WSquo : 4000
 Bytlm : 66000 Pgflquo : 100000
 JTquo : 4960

Are there problem with H/W configuration and parameters ?
Are there limited file sizes to backup to TLZ06 drive ?

I am glad with your help and response.

 Thank a lot,

 Heru::daivc

How far into the backup before it hangs? Are there any errors reported
in the error log before the hang? A few more details would help.

What do you mean by "hang"? Do they get a control-t or control-y
    response at that point?

What's the size of the pagefile?

A wild guess: problem on SCSI bus. What kind of disk drives do they
    use?

You can crash the system and find out from the crash dump what's going
on. They should at least do a "REPLY/ENABLE" before starting the
backup. This is an online backup, right?

 Hello Team ...

Thank you for your replys to my problem. Just the moment I got an information from
my customer that their machine was not hang when doing backup (all user still can access),
but the DAT drive's LED blinking for very long time (more than the time needed for -
+/- 800000 block). In this situation, the user couldn't cancel backup process, so they
need to restart the system. I am sorry for misinformation.
I have already delivered the external DAT drive TLZ06-DA to my customer for temporrary
action, until they send the e-mail for detail information.
I will inform you in this topic for the next progress if there is an interresting log.

Did they try to STOP/ID the user process doing the backup? If so, did
the process end up in RWAST mode in SHOW SYSTEM?

They could have used a BACKUP/LOG to watch any progress. Or use
occasional control-Ts at the terminal where BACKUP was started.
