3359.0. "xmodem and stream record format" by MLNAD8::LONGONI (Carlo) Fri Jan 24 1997 12:33

hi all.

I'm doing some test using xmodem between a VAX and a PC.

On PC I use KEAterm or SMARTcom like terminal emulator.

I make a connection from PC to VAX.

When I have logged into VAX, I run xmodem and then
from terminal emuletor I start the receiver.

I don't have problems if I send text file or binary file (with 512 fixed lenght
record format)
but I'm not able to send binary file with strem record format.

Is this a limit of xmodem or I'm doing an error?

Thanks in advance

3359.1Ah, the problems of VMSWRKSYS::INGRAHAMAndyFri Jan 24 1997 15:5215
I don't really know for sure ... but I think the problem is how the
VAX program reads the 'stream' file.

Some programs (and not just Xmodem or Zmodem or Kermit) just have a
problem handling stream format files. I get this occasionally in the
office too (no terminal emulator involved). Maybe the stream format
didn't exist 10 years ago, or was so rarely ever used??

One would think it ought to be possible to write these file transfer
programs to recognize stream format files and change how they read the
bits; but this doesn't seem to be the case.

If you read the Kermit notesfile, there are dozens of questions and
answers about corrupt file transfers caused by trying to download a
stream file without first converting it to another form.
