3363.0. "W3.11/WNT3.51 File Manager look-alike for W95" by VAXCAT::LAURIE (Desktop Consultant, Project Enterprise) Tue Mar 04 1997 13:47

    Does anyone know of a decent W3.11/WNT3.51 File Manager look-alike for
    W95? I've looked on the web, but found nothing suitable, and the
    Windows so-called Explorer just isn't good enough.

    Cheers, Laurie.

    Ooh, an easy one. That would be WINFILE.EXE, part of Win95.

    Not so fast!

    I need long file names! (yeah I know, I should have mentioned that).

3363.3Explorer won't do what you want easily?SUBSYS::MSOUCYMentalmETALMikeWed Mar 05 1997 11:2111

    Why isn't explorer good enough? I personally use W95 file manager as I
    am used to it. If Explorer was able to do two or more windows a-la File
    Manager I would probably use it. It sort of does, but not in the sense
    of FM, meaning the listing window on the left and the contents window
    on the right. The downfall IMO of this is the fact you have to
    highlight the right window files, go to left window, close directory,
    select new one to open on that side and then drag files from right
    window to left.....kind of a pain compared to FM.....

    Umm... ever try opening TWO Explorer windows? If that's all that's
    open on your desktop, you can TILE the two Explorer windows and drag
    and drop between them quite nicely.

And one other neat Explorer tip - if you have two windows but one obscures the
other, drag the selection down to the task-bar "icon" for the target window -
that window will now pop up to the top and you can drag back onto it.

    On the other hand, I highly recommend Norton File Manager, which is
    included in Norton Navigator. It's got lots of goodies, including
    treating ZIP files like normal folders, access to FTP sites like
    normal folders (with some limitations), etc.

    It's commercial, though, not shareware.
3363.7Living in the past...GANTRY::HULLSystems Integration [Delivery]/MotownWed Mar 05 1997 22:2416
You guys are all missing the point in using Explorer. Select any group of
fil;es with the usual Windows keyclicks. RIGHT-click on any of the
selected files. Click onMOVE or COPY. Then use the left folder pane
to navigate wherever you
want to put them. RIGHT click on the target dir - select PASTE.

You are mired in your thinking in Win 3.1 terms. Win95 uses objects with
properties under the right mouse button. Its a new, easier paradigm.

A good example - say you want to copy a disk file to a floppy. How much
effort in Win3.1 does it take to do that?? In Win95 its TWO mouseclicks
(right-click, then Send To -> 3.5 Floppy (A)  ).

learn it - live it -breath it.

After 15 months of Win95 I abhor the Win 3.1 interface. It really sucks.

    I beg to differ. ;-) I use both paradigms as intended, right mouse
    clicks and all for Explorer.

    >> In Win95 its TWO mouseclicks (right-click, then Send To -> 3.5
    >> Floppy (A)  ).

    And on File Manager, it's a single drag and drop. :-P

    And if I want to do things quickly, I use the command line. Just
    kidding, mostly. I do a lot of work remotely via telnet so the
    command line is second nature.

And you are mired in thinking that the Explorer solves all problems.

I use the explorer just about exclusively, but I long for the ability to
have the finder features of having two windows and clicking the tile
horizontal button to get them equally sized and in a single larger window
(whatever the proper name for that is). Then when I want to bring both to
the top, I click in just one place. My life is easier when I can do that.

I've now learned to right click and chose move or copy or shortcut, but I
was mightly annoyed until I learned that trick. I still sometimes forget
and am then really annoyed when the right thing didn't happen.

The old finder did what I wanted and allowed me to be queried for a choice
(when I desired it). The new, improved way doesn't give me the option to
have the default behavior the way I want it to be.

There's lots of advantages to explorer, but it's not everything that it
could be - and some of what it can be did exist before the world was
"improved".

Rick

> learn it - live it -breath it.

If it were better, you wouldn't have to learn it.

I thought the whole idea of a WIMP interface, was that it's supposed to be
intuitive.

I hate it every time someone comes along and re-invents the world and
forces you to re-learn everything you used to know because their way is
"better".

The tool should fit the user's habits and preferences ... not the other way
around.
3363.11still should have made FM like NT 4.0's FM!SUBSYS::MSOUCYMentalmETALMikeThu Mar 06 1997 10:3613

    re: -1

    I agree, why didn't they just make FM Win32 and handle long file names.
    NT 4.0 appears to work just fine (I'll have to double-check this though
    to cover my tail in here!). Two windows is not what should have to be
    done, learning the *new* way(s) is fine and dandy if you care to learn
    the new re-invention. I prefer FM for what *I* use it for. Fancier
    Smancier, they STILL should have made FM able to handle long filenames,
    period. They did it in NT 4.0, which also happens to have the new GUI,
    so why leave it out of W95??

3363.13Try PowerDesk's Explorer+ ProductSUBSYS::DANEKThu Mar 06 1997 16:509
I discovered Explorer+ from Mijenix. This product seems to solve all of the problems
that everyone has complained about. It's shareware (about $35) and has so many neat
feature that I won't list them all here. You get more than just an enhansed Explorer.

Get it from...

    I just tried to get it there and FTP anonymous not allowed. I'll check
    Windows95.com for it.

    Not at Windows95.com either....and still cannot access this file via
    netscape. Access denied. Also, can't locate their version 1.0 on their
    site either! What's the deal? If I get it I'll put it in my shared
    directory path \\pcy3v9\files, or for games \\pcy3v9\w95games.

Try FTPing anonymously from danek.shr.dec.com. Look in the pub
directory for pdeval20.exe.

    I just found it on W95.com and is available on my share at
    \\pcy3v9\files. Games in \\pcy3v9\w95games. PowerDesk filename is:
    pdeval20.exe. I also have the IE 3.01 security patch and other files in
    there.
