587.0. "1997 Memorial Cup tournament" by POLAR::MAJOR () Mon May 12 1997 21:09

The Hull Olympiques, this years host team, as well as the Quebec league
champion, played their first game in this years Memorial Cup round
robin yesterday and beat the Ontario team (Oshawa Generals) 8-0 at the
Bob Guertin arena. Oshawa had previously played the Chicoutimi Sags on
Saturday and beat them 5-3 with a late 3rd period goal. The Western
league team, the Lethbridge Hurricanes also beat the Sags 4-2 on
Sunday. Tomorrow, the key game will be between Hull and Lethbridge, the
two teams everyone sees in this year's final.

Christian Dube, TC Jr star, got 4g-1a in that game.

Dube started the year in the NHL w/ the NYR but finally got sent back
to Jr in late Jan. Apparently he couldn't cut the Rangers lineup on a
regular basis; something to do w/ the Rangers having guys named Messier
and GreAtzky as centremen too. The kid doesn't belong in Jr.

Hull's backup goalie was a 1st round pick of Buffalo 2 yrs ago. They're
    playing a rookie instead.  For those who'll watch the 'Piques play;
check out their PP, it's as potent as the Avs.

Your right about their PP Andy; They had 120 PP goals in the regular
    season (72 games)...

The backup goalie is Sabres' Martin Biron, for whom Hull traded for
during the season. However, Christian Bronsard, undrafted free agent
has been a big surprise in th second half of the season and in the
playoffs to earn his # 1 ranking for the M Cup.

Although last nite's result (8-0 win) was very refreshing vs the
Generals, I'm still dissapointed that Hull didn't have the
'opportunity' to play/beat this year's NO.1 ranked Jr team, the Ottawa
67's...For our friends in the USA and Europe, Ottawa is just across the
    river from Hull...:*)

Yep, that would have been fun and the region would have been buzzing.

For some reason, the Generals always give the 67s a tough time. I saw
a few of the games and goaltending was the difference. Ottawa's was
ordinary and Oshawa's was outstanding (Arsenault). The Generals are a
very tired team and Hull benefited from the schedule. Yesterday's game
was the second in two days for the Generals but it was the first game
of the tournament for the Olympiques.

P.S. When was the last time that a Hull team won a major

Quebec jr. teams in the last 3 years, and was cut from the Chicoutimi

Lethbridge beat the Sags, 4-2 (also yesterday).
Lethbridge was leading 4-0 w/ a few minutes left in the game so it is
expected that they'll meet Hull in the finals. One thing that I noticed
though is they only got 20 shots on net. Hull will eat'em alive.

Ray mon ami, no whining just trying to put things in perspective.

The last time the Memorial cup was in Hull (1982 I think) I was there to
see Brian Bellows' Kitchener Rangers get hammered by the Quebec
representatives (I don't remember the team but they had a highly touted
defenseman called Paul Boutilier) 11 - 2 in the first game. Kitchener
    ended up winning the tournament.

Also, Hull is an area team so of course I'm hoping for them to win.
You should always cheer for the local team if you know what I mean ;-)
The last team that I would cheer for in this tournament is Oshawa. I
hate them because they always give Ottawa a tough time and they play
    dirty (have for years).

The "last team to win" question was more of a trivia thing. You will
be pleased to know that it was the Ottawa-Hull Canadiens who won the
Memorial cup in 1958. They were the Canadiens' farm team. I've
attached their roster. There's a few names that you'll recognize ;-)

    Bernie.

1958 - Ottawa-Hull Canadiens - Jon Annable, Ralph Backstrom, Jacques
Begin, Bob Boucher, Bill Carter, Claude Cyr, Dick Dawson, Claude Fournel,
Bruce Gamble, Terry Gray, John Longarini, Nick Murray, Bob Olajos,
Claude Richard, Bob Rousseau, Claude Ruel, Andre Tardif, Gilles Tremblay,
Jean C. Tremblay, Harold White, Sam Pollock(manager), Scotty Bowman (coach).
587.11Lethbridge and Hull square off tonite...POLAR::MAJORTue May 13 1997 17:5022
    Bernie,

I also saw a few games in the 1982 Memorial Cup. The Quebec team
was the Castors de Sherbrooke, who along w/ Boutillier, also had Michel
Petit on D. Their top forwards included Sean McKenna and Gerard
    Gallant.

Kitchener also had (I think) Scott Stevens and Al McInnis on the
    blue line.

The Western team was the Portland Winter Hawks. Their stars were
    Gary Nylund and Ken Yaremchuck.

I was at the final game that year between Kitchener and Portland.

BTW, so far this year, Hull has been the most impressive team, but
IMHO, the most impressive player is Marc Savard of Oshawa. I'm very
impressed w/ his passing ability and his overall vision of the ice
    surface. He's an excellent playmaker.

However, if you do go to the game, you'll miss the debate on TV
    tonight!

TSN scheduled tonight's game long ago to be shown on a tape delay basis
because they did not want to conflict with the NHL playoffs on TV.
They probably assumed that at least one series would go 6 games.

The Hull Olympiques took a 6-1 lead into the third period, but let the
Lethbridge Hurricanes score the next 6 goals, including the OT winner,
as the western reps beat the home team 7-6 last nite in Memorial Cup
    play.

Up to that point, Hull had completely dominated the M Cup, outscoring
the opposition 14-1 in 5 periods. Also last nite, Hull scored 3 goals
on their first 3 shots on net, and were ahead 5-0 after one period...

Full credit to the 'Canes for not giving up. Their amazing comeback
gives them an automatic spot in Sunday's final. For their parts, the

The talk of the tournament is...the officiating. The complaint is that
too many penalties are being called. I agree that many penalties are
being called but I haven't seen very many that were not deserved. I
saw last night's game and I thought the ref did a good job. Seems to
me that the Quebec League has decided that the game must be played by
the rules and are applying them. It's up to the players to adjust and
    to play within the rules.

In last night's game, Hull went in a coma half way through the second
period. They took a lot of stupid penalties and didn't take advantage
of the many powerplay opportunities they were handed. When Lethbridge
tied the game with less than two minutes left, they had their best scorer
in the dressing room with a ten minutes misconduct and Phillips was in
    the penalty box.

Very good game last night. Only five penalties were called. It was
the cleanest game I've seen in years (Junior or Pro). The game was
refereed by the same guy that called the Lethbridge and Hull game. In
that game he called over 100 minutes of penalties. He was calling
EVERYTHING. I guess the players learned and decided to keep the cheap
shots down because in last night's game there were no sticks in the face,
no face washes and no two handed slashes. Furthermore no hooking,
tripping or holding was left uncalled.

Right after that game I watched the replay of the Sweden - Canada game
where the referee "let them play". Tons of cheap shots, bloodied faces,
stickwork, spearing, you name it, with most incidents not penalized.

yeah! the 'Piques scored an impressive 25g in only 4games.

Oshawa(Ont) coach Bill Stewart complained that Hull 'bought' themselves
a championship team. They bought the rights for Dube w/ $50k and 2
players to be named later, and sent draft picks to Beauport for 2 other
    players.

Meanwhile, Lethbridge (West), make a 10-12 player trade late in the
season to stack themselves a team. Stewart also forgot about the 'Eric
Lindros' rule. In the OHL, no 16yr could be traded until Lindros
wouldn't report to the team that drafted him (deja vu eh!). So Oshawa
gave 5 players to Sault-Ste-Marie and $80k; 2yrs later they won the
    Memorial Cup.

    Other stories:
-Byron Ritchie (Lethbridge) getting caught on camera (french station)
saying "...fuckin' frogs...." after he got kicked out of a game.

After being a 'walk on', he won the defensive rookie of the year
award in the QMJHL, the playoff MVP, the best goalie award in the

this, with Martin Biron (Sabres 1st pick) as a back-up...

I don't think it was really a gamble.
The 'Piques use to be owned by GreAtzky. Charlie Henry, GreAtzky 2nd
dad if you may, is the GM of Hull. Dube was playing for the NYR. When
Henry struck the deal w/ Sherbrooke, who owned the rights to Dube, I'm
sure that a few phone calls were made by Henry to GreAtzky to make sure
that he'd be 'available'. Add to that, the GM for Sherbrooke is Dube's
dad and he wanted to see his son in the Memorial Cup.

As for the goalies, it's a "very well-known" fact that if you want to
win a major championship in Canada you must have a french canadian
goalie. 3 of the 4 starting goalies in the Mem Cup were french Cdn.
