2173.0. "Looking for a Cairn or Australian Terrier" by WMOIS::DION () Tue Mar 11 1997 12:32

    A friend of mine just had to put down their Golden a week ago due to
    age and failing organs. She is now looking for a Cairn Terrier or
    an Australian Terrier. If anyone out there knows of a rescue league
    or breeders I appreciate the info, so I may pass it along. I told her
    to please not go to a pet store to purchase a dog. I told her I would
    try to help her rescue one or help her get a puppy for a decent price.
    This is for a family pet.

    Also she asked me the question. What breed of dog is small and does not
    need alot of grooming? She also stated she would take a mixed breed
    as long as it looked somewhat similar to what she wants.

    Thanks Donna

    I'm not a terrier expert - BUT I think most of the terrier breeds
    require quite a bit of expert grooming, in order to look that certain
    way (Like you would see in a book of dog breeds). There is a technique
    called "hand stripping" (or something like that) that needs to be done.
    I know I was amazed when I found out that what I thought was a
    "natural" look, was in fact the result of a lot of hard work!

    You could probably have a cairn terrier and not have it groomed the
    "official" way - hopefully someone else can shed some more light on
    this.

    Sharon,

    If you aren't showing, you can use clippers to approximate the
    "stripped" look.

    How about a Jack Russel terrier? If you get one of the short haired
    ones they don't require any grooming - at least no coat trimming.
    They come in packages of about 8 lbs or so. :-) Adorable dogs!
    I want to have one someday - lots of friends have had them and
    love them. We've got 5 big ones right now so I can't - he'd get
    squashed in the stampede. ;-)

2173.5How about a mutt?BUNKA::LEMENWed Mar 12 1997 18:463
There are many short-haired mixed breeds that require very little grooming.
My parents' dog, Tuffy, was part beagle/terrier/hound. He was an adorable
dog, never weighed more than 30 lbs, and could be combed in under a minute.
2173.6Is 2 hours a year too much?DECWET::JDADDAMIOThink softlyFri Mar 14 1997 18:075
    Actually, Cairns don't need a lot of grooming. Since they don't shed
    like most dogs do, they have to be stripped to help them shed their
    dead coat. We usually spend about 1.5 - 2 hours on spring grooming and
    maybe 1 hour at another time of year. See note 219 for more info on
    Cairns. I wrote a couple notes on grooming techniques in that topic.
2173.7Which part of the country?DECWET::JDADDAMIOThink softlyFri Mar 14 1997 18:139
    As for rescue options, if you're in the Seattle area, contact me or my
    wife(also at Digital). We do local Cairn rescue with Seattle Purebred
    Dog Rescue.

    If you're in another part of the country, say where. I've got contact
    info for most parts of the country. It's just too darned much to type
    all of it.
