2184.0. "Wolf?mix being held in Nashua" by BRAT::ROBBINS () Tue Apr 22 1997 16:15

    Hi,

If you've seen the Saturday Telegraph you know they are holding
a dog they believe to be a wolf-hybred. They have no proof
other than its wolfy looking. An organization has offered to
take him & give him a home. The officials are being un-cooperative.

If you have time, please write to the Telegraph at

news@telegraph-nh.com, this animal has shown no aggression & has
a place to go. There is no reason for them to kill him.

    Thanks,
    Diane

If this animal was caught in the wild, and born in the wild
    I don't blame them..

I wouldn't want a wolf-hybred type dog placed next door to me,
and with a background they are not sure of...

This organization you speak of, what is it a wolf-hybred rescue
league or is it a group that tries to crossbreed wolves and dogs
and they just want to observe it under controled conditions, or is
it some people who think it would be cool to have a wolf looking dog.

I would think they would try and be sure the animal has a clean bill
of health, and that it was living in a home NOT in the wild..

I think it is a bad idea to introduce a wild animal to a standard
    home life...

Better yet, send mail directly to the Humane Society at hsne@juno.com.

There is a legitimate organization (Loki Clan Wolf Refuge in Chatham)
that is willing to adopt the animal if it is indeed part wolf.
According to the Telegraph today, the group filed a restraining order
(to be served today) to keep the animal from being euthanized before
it can be examined for wolf ancestry.

If it is *not* part wolf, I hope that they give it a fair chance to be
    adopted out.

    Tim,

Why do you need to jump to conclusions its going next door to
    someone?? It's a RESCUE organization. & I'm sure no-one
would ever get near a wolf born in the woods.

Please write to me if you need me to explain this further.

    Thank you.

This animal does not need to die! If it is part wolf- let that
be determined. Let him have a chance at life! I wrote to the
    telegraph also....

According to our local Humane Society, there is no valid test
available to determine if a dog has wolf ancestry. Going by
"looks" alone is, at best, a matter of guessing.

Unless the breeder can be found (and can be trusted) there is no way
to label a dog as "wolf-hybrid".

I don't believe my mail is jumping to any conclusions. Considering
all the information you had given us in your entry.. Read your entry
again, you don't mention that the organization that wanted to adopt
it was a RESCUE organization or some crazy vet that wants to do some
kind of behavioral (SP??) experiments on it..

Your entry implies we should send mail to The Saturday Telegraph
to stop what ever is going to happen without knowing more about
    the situation..

    No..I wouldn't want a dog/wolf hybrid living near me if they don't
know about his or her background, if there is a question about the
background of the animal I will always error on the safe side..

As much as I don't like to hear about all the dogs that are abandon
or put up for adoption, I know there is no way I/us will be able to
save them all..As for the RESCUE group Loki Clan Wolf, I think what
they are doing (reply .2) with the restraining order is a waste of
the courts time, think about it if you were the judge.
"Your honor sir, I want you to stop them from putting this half a
dog and maybe half a wolf to sleep"
"On what grounds" the judge says
"Cause we should find out if it is half a wolf or not first, then
if it is not a wolf then we can put it back in the pound and put it
back on the list to ..." lets waste more tax payers money on the
court for cases that are stupid.

If it was a full breed wolf I would understand, but for a halfbreed,
sounds like to me that all they will do with it is to observe it,
not to bring it back to health and re-introduce it back to the wild,
Which I assume is the reason for the organization for in the first
place, not just to have them in a cage somewhere, all this dog/wolf
would do is stay in the cage or be put to sleep once all the
observations have been completed.. I'm no expert but what kind of
test are there that could tell you if it is part wolf on not..

    Too many questions for me....

I'll be branded now as someone who doesn't care about animals, which
is far from the truth, I have been known to trap a squirrel in my
basement and to let him loose just to catch the same one week later.
So I want wildlife around me, but I also don't go overboard. I have
personally help place about 5-6 dogs from this notefile.

I know people are out there who don't want any animal to be put down
or have any kind of scientific experiments done on them, but that is
all that will happen to this half breed, once its purpose has ended.

Dogs have become "Mans best friend" because we domesticated it. They
    were once "wild" too.

Wolves, Coyotes, etc...could have been the first on our list to be our
    pets.
