265.31new medicine?WMOIS::FLECK_SLove me, Love my dogs, cats, etc.Fri Mar 28 1997 12:157

    My vet recently put Bo on some new medicine, it begins with an "R" and
    they just got it a month ago. It's supposed to help with arthritis
    pain and supposedly has no side effects. Cost 1.00 a pill. We are
    trying it for two weeks and the dosage will lower if its working.
    Does anyone know about the medicine I'm talking about?

    I can't remember the name of it either, but a friend of mine just
    started giving it to her dog about a week or so ago and it is
    wonderful! Her dog was getting arthritis to the point that she
    didn't want go on walks anymore, but after only a couple of days
    she was acting like a puppy again. They had her on a high dosage
    for about a week, and then I believe you drop down to giving her
    a "booster" pill only when she starts to act stiff again. I've
    got to get the name from her again myself so we can start using
    it if/when our guys start getting older.

    As a side, does anyone know if it can be used on horses yet? I've
    got one that's getting up there in years, but hasn't started developing
    any problems yet.

    It's Rimadyl (Carprofen). It's an NSAID for dogs. I don't believe
    it's approved for use in horses. The best thing about it is that it
    doesn't have the nasty side effects of other NSAIDs like aspirins (GI
    ulceration). It's wonderful stuff - the orthopedic vets are loving it
    (along with everyone else).
265.34TIME TO EXERCISEWMOIS::FLECK_SLove me, Love my dogs, cats, etc.Mon Mar 31 1997 15:488

    	Yes! Thats it. Bo is now down to 102 lbs. which is also helping
    his pain and stiffness. The vet said swimming would be real good
    exercise for Bo. Does anyone know of water that Bo and I could go
    swimming in? I don't think he would swim on his own. I live in
    Gardner MA, so somewhere within 10 miles would be good.

    re: .33 - thanks for the note about the horses. I hope they are
    looking into it. It seems like wonderfull stuff from what I've
    seen/heard.
