6683.0. "RA73 and "spurious drive power"" by TOPTEN::KELLER () Tue May 13 1997 17:19

Just thought I would pass this on those of you who still have RA7x
drives. I have around 500 of them yet and they have been incredibly
reliable. In the last year I don't think I have replaced one component
and most of these drives were installed in 93 so they are now 4 years
or almost 4 years old. INCREDIBLE!!

But, over the past 2-3 years I have had several strange problems
relating to power. The first 2-3 times the problem eventually went
away without our understanding of what solved the problem. I still don't
know what the problem is, but I know how to resolve it.

The problem starts of with a drive failing with an error code of "053F"
which is "invalid or spurious drive power". Usually all OCP indicators
stay on and the only way to clear them is to power fail the drive. The
problem has always come back, usually within a few minutes, sometime a
few days, but it has always come back. In my circumstances, I have
never resolved this problem by replacing anything, and the last 4
failures have been resolved by removing the guts with the four drives
and removing the side panel for the drive in question. I then sort of "re
route" the power cable, tape up corners where they are coming in contact
with the cable, and replace the unit. After doing this I have never
had another problem with the drive in question. I don't think it is a
short (or open); it just doesn't act like that. But, what ever it
    takes!

    Hope this helps someone.
