6606.0. "FR-PCWVR-AZ and RZ29B-VW interchangeable?" by YASHAR::RONNIEB (Debt Free! Thank You, Jesus!) Mon Apr 21 1997 17:13

I have a Prioris ZX6166MP2/512 with an expansion FR-BA356-KB pedestal.
The system has 384MB of memory, a TZ87/DLT2000 tape drive, and eleven
    (11) FR-PCWVR-AZ 4GB Wide SCSI HDD's, configured into three sets of
system drives with one set containing two drives, one set containing
six drives, and the third set containing three drives.

I currently have Windows NT Version 4.0 with Service Pack 2 running.

I had one of the drives in the two-drive set go DED; I got another
drive (the case indicates that it is a RZ29B-VW) from field service but
I have been unable to get it to REBUILD, using the DACCF Utilities. I
can Format it first then, when it starts the rebuild and indicates
"Rebuild in progress" it fails right away with the error "Asynchronous
Rebuild Failed". The DACCF Utilities handbook doesn't show this error.

I have another system that is a mirror image of this one, so I took one
of its FR-PCWVR-AZ drives and replaced the RZ29B-VW. I was able to
    REBUILD it without error!

SO, this leads me to ask the question: is the RZ29B-VW the correct disk
to replace the FR-PCWVR-AZ? If so, could this mean the RZ29B-VW is DOA?
If the RZ29B-VW is not the correct replacement then I understand why it
    would not rebuild.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks, and regards,

	Ron

The RZ29B drive is NOT the same as the FR-xxxxx Part number; the RZ
is supported by the Storageworks Group, the other one is a PCBU
    product. They are NOT interchangeable.

On the system you were able to get running, it will fail. The RZ29B has about
4MB LESS block than the FR- drive. The DAC960 (unless you did a FULL re-init of
the ENTIRE raid set) still thinks you have the same capacity as the original
drive. SO, sometime in the future when you data set starts to get full, when the
controller goes to access LBA # 7FDEB0 (max LBA on a RZ29B is 7FDEAF) the drive
will report "lba out of range" and the controller will FAULT it out of the raid
set.
