6580.0. "Online Upgrade from HSJ40 to HSJ50?" by COLES1::SIEK () Tue Apr 15 1997 11:25

    Hello!

    I have a question regarding the upgrade of a Hsj40 to
    a HSJ50:

    1. We shadow the disks on one HSJ40 with the disks on another
       HSJ40. We want to upgrade the HSJ40s with HSJ50.
       Can we do this online:
       a. dismount the shadowmembers on one HSJ40
       b. set the Pathes to off on that HSJ40
       c.  replace the HSJ40 Controller with a HSJ50
       d. setup the units on the new controller
       e. go online again and run a shadow copy
       f. repeat the steps a-e for the other HSJ40

    2. Do we have to init the Stripesets/Disks in step d, or
       is the dataformat the same on HSJ40 and HSJ50?

    Regards
    Herbert

6580.1Yup exactly the same but a few caveatsSSDEVO::RMCLEANTue Apr 15 1997 13:5135
  The disks on a HSJ50 and HSJ40 are EXACTLY the same!!! If you init the
disks with the HSJ50 you may loose something (Like Forced error information).

>>	You can do a shutdown here instead to ensure the cache is flushed.
>>	also do a show to ensure the cache is flushed! You want this because
>>	you will be replacing the cache module.
       c.  replace the HSJ40 Controller with a HSJ50
       d. setup the units on the new controller
>> d1. set paths on on the HSJ50
	   Keeping the paths off will keep the system happier as the
           units show up while you are doing the configuration.
       e. go online again and run a shadow copy
       f. repeat the steps a-e for the other HSJ40

    2. Do we have to init the Stripesets/Disks in step d, or
       is the dataformat the same on HSJ40 and HSJ50?
>>Absolutely NOT. Be REAL careful to ensure that your configuration is EXACTLY
>>the same as it was on the HSJ40.

    Does the same hold for upgrading from HSD30 to HSZ50?? Is the
    Metadata compatible??
6580.3Not quiteSSDEVO::RMCLEANThu Apr 17 1997 13:203
Not quite. They are the same for JBOD and raid5 sets but there is a
problem with geometry between HSJ and HSZ.

6580.4How HSD to HSJ?DV780::THURYMaking it so...Tue Apr 22 1997 12:208
    How about moving from HSDxx to HSJxx?

    I'm about to start an engagement with a customer who is migrating from
    DSSI to CI for his disk farm. I've been told that he is now using
    HSD30s and is running with mirror sets. Any problem just moving the
    RZxx's to the HSJ50s, and rebuilding/redefining the mirror sets?

I see no reason to rebuild the mirror sets. Just configure the HSJ50 in
a similar manner. Just backup your disks, configure the HSJ50, and
plug in the disks and you are done.
