1078.0. "No more Visual C++ Subscription" by STAR::DZIEDZIC (Tony Dziedzic - DTN 381-2438) Mon Jan 27 1997 16:33

PC Week (?) had an article this week which mentioned that the
Visual C++ subscription program was being discontinued. Some
product manager from Microsoft claimed they were dropping the
program because no one installed the new versions and it the
VC++ team was burning out due to the artificial release schedule.

Yup, it's official - I got a letter from MS saying they were
discontinuing it after VC++ 5.0 since developers were not able to take full
advantage of the updates. (They are offering a refund of $50.00 for each
of the remaining update to your subscription).

I liked the spin on that letter: "We received
clear feedback that many developers are unable to take
full advantage of the frequent updates.
In response to this feedback, ...". A true
market-driven company, they've responded to
our overwhelming demand NOT to receive
more functionality, better quality, and
"insider" information in a timely manner.
I didn't even know I wanted to not be on
the leading edge and would prefer to be in
the backwash! Why didn't they just say,
"we can't handle the schedule!"?

;-)
