184.1130CD changer for the JettaIFDL::PELLANDWed Apr 02 1997 18:0718

I just purchased a 97' Jetta GT. I've been seriously thinking about
purchasing a CD changer for the car (first car CD player I've ever
had). The radio that came with the Jetta is 'Premium AM/FM Stereo
Cassette Radio'. VW does offer a 'CD changer' and the radio I
have in the car is equipped to handle a CD changer. VW wants
$500.00 for the CD changer. Since I don't have any experience
with CD changers (is this something that you 'plug' into the
radio and the output sounds like a cassette tape?), is this a good
price or can I get it somewhere else cheaper? I was also wondering
if maybe I'd get better sound quality/performance on the VW's
CD changer rather than one I'd purchase from a store.

Any input would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Chris

call crutchfield; they'll have the answer for you. (also,
    www.crutchfield.com)

If you can get a CD that integrates with the radio, it will probably
sound somewhat better than the FM-modulator method. You may or may not
be able to get an aftermarket CD that is directly compatible with the
    radio.

I'll second Crutchfield if for nothing else than the advice. You may
have to ditch your head unit if you don't want to go the FM modulation
route. You may also run into problems if you have amplified speakers
in the car. Not sure if VW did away with this practice or not in
later years. If you do replace the head unit, you can get a decent
aftermarket head unit and compatible CD changer for not much more than
$500.00 and you'll most likely end up with a better sounding system to
    boot.

    Chris,

I got a used Blaupunkt 10-CD changer, which uses an FM modulator,
for ~$200. I hooked this up to a Kenwood tuner/casette player.
(I also got a 4*50 watt amp and upgraded the speakers and added a
subwoofer). I may not be an audiophile, but it sounds great to me.
With an FM modulator, the CD player output gets forwarded through the
antenna wire to 88.3 or 88.7 (at least on mine) on the FM band, so
the sound quality, frequency response, seperation etc, are only as
good as the tuner portion of the radio (minus whatever for the
modulator). I do not know about the Jetta tuner/casette player you
have, but some have CD-changer controls built in, so you do not need
the FM modulator, thus possibly getting better sound quality. It
still depends on the rest of the amplifier/speakers etc. VW used
to use Blaupunkt radio/casette players, some of which are quite good.
Crutchfield has several brands of radio/casette/CD controllers
(including Blaaupunkt), but usually the brand of CD-changer needs
to be the same as the tuner/casette player. So, when you say,
"... and the radio I have in the car is equipped to handle a CD changer."
it would sound like it does have built in CD controls, otherwise
every FM radio will work with an FM modulator. If this is the case,
you'll probably need to find the brand and what CD changer works
with it. Buying from Crutchfield will definately save you money
compared to the dealer, and their service is excellent.

CD changer... Recently "European Car" magazine took a new Jetta
with the Premium sound system which has CD controls
for a cd rack and installed the rack that is
compatible with this radio and reported that the
sound was outstanding. Most of the premium systems
in the VW's use a Clarion system which will control
a Clarion cd rack model CDC-605 ONLY. This is a 6 disk
rack. The article also mentioned the outrageous
pricing from the dealer and suggested using an
aftermarket supplier for around $200 instead
of the $500 that the dealer wants for the same rack.
Make sure you get the adapter for the wiring into the
                    back of the head unit.
                    Hope this info is useful...

184.1137starter motor does not turn when hot.SSDEVO::MARTENSQualification Program ManagerMon Apr 21 1997 22:0112
Has anyone had problems with a 1985 Jetta starter motor? The car
will start just fine when cold, and most times when warm or hot. But
other times, it will just provide a minor "click". And then later the
same day it will start just fine. The car has about 180K, and the
starter was replaced for the same problem last year. Now that this
problem is back, it is time to look at other causes.

    Any ideas?

You may have a gap in the wire from the key to the starter solenoid
or an loose/partially broken wire or corroded terminal somewhere in the
system. This happened to me and the break in the wire was somehwere
between the switch and the firewall. I ended up splicing in a new
stretch of wire to bypass the old one. Periodically I would have to
hot wire it at the starter. Won me big points when I went out on dates
:-). I'd start by checking the integrity of the terminals at the
starter including the ground strap to see if they are intact or loose.

Automatic transmission? There's a known problem with the starter motor
in Jettas with ATs, where the starter, surrounded by the exhaust
manifold, bakes and becomes intermittent when hot, and eventually gives
up altogether. I went through this twice on my 1988 Jetta with 246K
miles. Letting the engine compartment cool for anywhere from minutes to
hours would temporarily solve the problem.

There's a technical bulletin describing a temporary electrical workaround
to the problem that I can dig up if you like. However, given that you
just replaced the starter a year ago, I'd be kind of surprised if this
problem is the one you are experiencing.

184.1141ground?RHETT::BURDENA bear in his natural habitatTue Apr 22 1997 19:5711
Two things to look at - how many keys do you have hanging from the
ignition switch? The extra weight of a lot of keys can kill the switch.
This seems unlikely since a new starter fixed your problem last time, but
  it's something to consider.

In addition to getting lost of power to kick a starter over, it has to
have a good ground. The VW engines are basically grounded through the
mounts. Try running a thick wire from the engine block back to the NEG
term on the battery and see if that helps.

    Dan,

Yes it has an AT, and My guess is that it is related to heat caused
by the exhaust manifold. If you have the service data sheet, I could
    use it.

    re 1141,
There are only two jetta keys on that ring, since they had to change
door/trunk locks, this car requires seperate keys.

The starter sounds like it has a click when the key is turned, and I
have checked the voltage to the two wires connecting to the starter,
and one have +12v when the key is turned. I think its a bad starter,
and the heat is adding to the failures. It is very difficult to access
this starter, since it is hidden by the manifolds, and exhaust.

    Thanks,

Yes, the location of the starter on the auto trans VW is a pain. If you can,
pull the starter and bench test it. I did this on the '83 Rabbit we were
given for free. The starter would not work in the car, even if I fed it 12v
from the battery. When I removed and tested it, it worked fine. That's
when I discovered a bad ground was causing the problem. A $5 ground
strap to the battery solved it.

OK, I'll have to some digging to find it. Your local VW dealer may also be
willing to give you a copy.

Here's one way to check if the workaround will help. Basically, what the
workaround does is to shorten the path of the current getting from the battery
to the starter, and therefore, reduces the voltage drop. In my Jetta, the
original path is very circuitous (no pun intended), going from the starter
through the firewall to the ignition switch, back through the firewall to the
starter solenoid. The workaround patches a relay into the wire going to the
solenoid, with the solenoid fed directly from the battery through the relay,
which is tripped by the original solenoid feed.

Look near the firewall, in the center, at the top, for the wire with a
connector (yellow on my car) that goes down behind the block to the solenoid.
When the car won't crank, disconnect that wire and, using a jumper wire (not
too small gauge), jumper the solenoid directly to the battery. If the car
cranks, the relay workaround will help (for awhile, until the starter bakes
even more).

Note that this kluge is the one described on the VW service bulletin, and
they'll even sell you the parts, though I built my own. In spite of issuing
the service bulletin, VW denies there's a design problem.

And you and Dave are right: getting to the starter on the Jetta with AT is
a major PITA. My mechanic charges for a minimum of 4 hours of labor for the
job. And Dave's also right about the grounds: make sure all the grounds (on
the battery as well as the ground from the block to the firewall) are sound.

-Dan

P.S. Do you have the Bentley service manual for the car? Very helpful.

P.P.S. I reiterate that, if the replacement starter in your car hasn't got
many miles on it yet, this probably isn't the problem. My first starter
exhibited symptoms at around 120K, and the second starter at around 200K.
However, if whomever replaced your starter didn't reinstall the heat shield,
that probably exacerbated the problem.

    Jetta rear suspension problem:

Last year, I had new shocks installed(BOGEs). The old ones had blown
out a couple of times(Gabriels?) and I was tired of getting them
replaced. Anyway, the BOGEs were fine for a while(5K) but now are very
soft and to top it off,... I'm now getting a very distinctive CLUNK

the shocks keep dying,... but another guy(Little Car Care in Lawrence)
said that springs don't really degrade THAT much. Either they work, or
    they don't.

Anybody else have this happen to them? Any suggestions?

Yes, the springs will get weaker with age, it's not a binary thing. You could

Boges are average shocks at best. They are OEM on many European cars such
as Renault, VW, Volvo, etc. In many cases, they're shot after a year or
two, but people continue to ride on them anyway.
