211.814buzzing fuel pumpZEKE::BURTONJim Burton, DTN 381-6470Fri Jan 24 1997 11:5517
This morning, I was driving the 87 740 wagon (147K miles) and the engine was in
the warmup mode. Suddenly, it lost the power to accelerate and I'm pretty sure
I heard the main fuel pump buzzing (indicating the tank pump stopped working
temporarily). A minute later, the car was back to normal and the buzzing had
stopped. This intermittent event has been happening occasionally, but almost
always on cold wet mornings, or cold mornings the day after it rained or
snowed.

Since the tank fuel pump is over $200, I don't want to just go replacing it for
the heck of it. What course of action do you recommend? I was planning to
disconnect the electrical connector to the rear fuel pump and clean the
contacts. I can also purchase a new fuel pump relay for $20 and see if that
fixes it. I guess my real question is what is the failure mode for the
in-tank fuel pumps. Do they go flakey and then finally conk out or do
they just go all of a sudden? Anyone have any experience?

    re -.1

It used to be with VeeDubs with Bosch electric fuel pumps one way to tell
when the pump was dying involved playing with fuses. The factory
shipped the cars with a 20 amp fuse for the fuel pump. It'd run fine
when not worn with a 10 amp fuse. When the ten amp fuse blew you'd go
to a 15. When the fifteen blew, you'd go back to the twenty amp, and
go looking for a new pump.

Not sure if Volvos respond the same way or not, but I know my old Volvo
wagon ate its fuel pump about 135K miles. Failure mode was
intermittent almost feeling like vapor lock. Eventually when the
weather got hot it did vapor lock. New mega-buck pump fixed the
    problem.

Last year, I traded my '83 245 wagon that had had both fuel pumps go
within a year of each other. The noisy thing may be the impeller that
is wobbly and telling you it is going to go.

However, earlier in its life, mine also had developed a surging type
effect that seemed to just cut fuel flow right off (usually while
driving 50 or 60 mpg on a highway) and then it'd turn on again. That
problem was cured by the dealer tightening up the inner pump's seal to
the fuel tank. I had thought this problem would be a kilobuck fix, but
it took them about 15 minutes and I was on the road again.
211.817what would you suggest?ZEKE::BURTONJim Burton, DTN 381-6470Mon Jan 27 1997 12:1729

I think I might have solved the problem this weekend. Over the last two
years, this car has had problems with: bad gas mileage, poor idle, faulty
grounds, poor performance when in warmup mode, poor performance on the highway,
and other misc electrical problems such as flickering lights, etc. On
Saturday, I replaced the alternator with once from a 70,000 mile car and
it apppears as if most of the problems have gone away. The car drives and
idles just like a new car now. The cost was $50 and that included shipping
from Dallas, TX. I also have a brand new fuel pump relay coming from the
dealer in Houston and I'll put that in anyway since the old one is 10 years
old.

This new alternator is great, but I'm wondering how long it will last. New
ones are megabucks for these Volvos, so everyone goes with used or rebuilt.
I need to do the other car since it has 167K on the original alternator.
To have the old one I just took out rebuilt by a shop in Chelmsford will cost
$120 (includes new voltage regulator). Another used 70K mile one costs $50,
and a totally rebuilt one off the shelf is $200. I don't want to rebuild it
myself because the commutator is grooved pretty badly and I have no way of
turning it. What would you suggest doing?

I had a noisy main fuel pump about a month ago. I also thought it was going
out. My original main pump gave up at about 185,000. It's failure mode was
to not start. It happened to me three times, each time it would start after
a 30 minutes or longer wait. The last time it happened in my driveway and
after finding good voltage to the pump but no go, I talked to a mechanic I
use and he suggested tapping on the pump with a hammer. This freed the pump
and then it worked again. Long enough to get to a JY and get another pump.

I talked to the mechanic about the noise and he suggested the pressure
regulator valve at the end of the fuel manifold. Its failure mode is
to not relieve pressure, causing excessive fuel pressure, noisy pump
and very poor gas mileage. That tank I got 16mpg, usually I get 22-25.

On Christmas Eve I bought and put on a new regulator and the noise went away,
the fuel pump is quiet and I am back to the 22-25mpg range.

211.820Replace, don't turn 700 series brake rotorsSTOWOA::KALINOWSKIMon Jan 27 1997 20:2817
Well Jim, your analysis was spot on.

I had the front rotors returned to no avail (pulsing got worse). I
tried torquing the nuts in small increments without any good coming of
it. I called IPD and they, as you suggested said chuck the rotors, for
anything over 30,000 miles cannot be returned with any guarentee they
will actually work again on the 700 series Volvos.

Calling the brake warehouse in S.C. got me a set set of Brembo rotors
for $60 each. This is a great price, as I have special oversize Girling
brakes. The rotors arrived and looked like works of art. I felt bad
having to let the salt and water get to these beautiful machined
    rotors.

Took 20 minutes to install and they worked perfectly right out of the
box. I still don't understand why they can't machine these rotors square
again, but hopefull I will not have to find out in the future...
211.821Rotor life of the '90s?KWLITY::SUTERand now for something you'll really like!Tue Jan 28 1997 12:4120

Warped rotors seem to be the current trend. I chalk it up to
metallic brake pads. The pads may last forever, but it seems at the cost
of the rotors. My Dakota is tough on brakes cuz it's regularly asked to
stop the truck *PLUS* 3500 lbs of trailer that doesn't have it's own brakes.

At about 40-50k miles the rotors were severely warped. I had them
turned and managed to get about 20k miles out of them before I just couldn't
stand the pulsing anymore. I then purchased new ones, aftermarket, for a
pretty reasonable price. (50-65 bucks I think). And now have been running
with those for additional 50k miles. Wonder how long they'll last.....

As it was explained to me... Once the rotors are turned they have
less meat to dissipate the heat and therefore warp much easier at that
point.

YMMV

It used to be that rotors were very thick and solid. They were also relatively
expensive. You could turn them a number of times over the life of the car and
they would never need replacing. Then came the government regulations regarding
fuel efficiency and the automakers cut way back on the rotating mass of the
wheels to save gas. Of course this meant creating hollow rotors and taking the
metal down to the absolute bare minimum in thickness. Rotors then became
disposables like the pads. The price also came down dramatically as the
aftermarket entered this growing market. Unfortunately, many mechanics still
try to turn them, thinking they are dealing with a 1960's car. On my 740, the
rear Brembo rotors were $35 each and the fronts $55 each. That's only about
10% more than new pads cost! I replace them at every other pad change. My
Volvo 740 sedan pulls a 2000 pound pop-up up and down the mpuntains of N.E.
and I have never had a rotor problem.

Jim,

The next brake thing you will have to deal with is the expanding seals in the
Volvo calipers (definitely affects Bendix; don't know about Girling). As they
age, the caliper seals expand and clinch the pistons tighter and tighter. Soon
it becomes difficult to stop the car. The solution is to buy a rebuild kit for
$32 for each front caliper and rebuild them. It's so straightforward, I don't
even take the calipers off the car. This weekend, the right front on the sedan
gets done.

   > I still don't understand why they can't machine these rotors square

It depends on why they warped. If it was due to uneven pressure of the
pads, then turning the rotors won't be affective unless the pressure
   is balanced (binding caliper ...)

If they warped do to overheating, the damage has been done to the strength
of the metal, and removing more metal isn't going to make it any stronger.

I replace the rotors on my wifes Caravan every other brake change because
it cost the same as turning, with much better results. The metal wears
   very fast on this vehicle.

The S10 just had the original rotors, never having been turned, replaced
after 180K due to failure to replace the pads on time (read: major grooves
   from rivit grinding :-)

I need some diagnostic help. My wifes' 1986 240 DL, Automatic with air
conditioning has developed a cooling strangeness.

During warmup, the temperature gauge will slowly move towards
operating temperature. Normally it would get to the center of the
guage and stop and this is where it would remain as long as the car was
running. Now, the guage will go past center and rise till about 1/2
way between center and the red zone. It will stay there for a second
or two and move back down towards center, stopping just above center.
It will then pretty much stay where it is, but does show some slight
    movement in both directions.

I've replaced the temperature compensation module, the radiator, and
have had the pressure caps checked. Still the same.

What do you think? I figure it could be the mechanical fan clutch is
weak, but I'm not sure how this is suppose to work. It could be the
water pump is weak, but its not leaking or making noise. It could be
a clogged heater core, but I get plenty of heat. The thermostat was
replaced in the fall, maybe a higher temp rating was put in.

It sounds like the temperature gauge is broken. There are some electronic
components associated with the Volvo temp gauge that filter out the small
variations in coolant temperature. That's why the gauge holds steady pointed
directly up during the summer as well as the winter. When these electronic
components go, you start to see the needle follow the actual coolant
temperature more closely. If you are sure the coolant system is working
properly then you may want to either replace the gauge or just live with
the gauge as it is. I believe it's about $100 for a new gauge.

When I bought the car, I had no heat blowing on the left side of
the car. I traced it to the fan wheel on the left side of the blower
that had fallen off the motor shaft. After looking at the amount of
work to pull the heater unit (this was in Nov '95 brrrr), I talked to
a friend who convinced me that I didn't need to be so sentimental about
a car with that much mileage. So, I found a rotary blade that I could
fit into my drill (ala giant dremel tool), and proceeded to cut one
biiiggg ugly hole in the side of the heater housing!!!! Pulled the old
fan wheel out, went to the dealer, got the kit for $10, installed the
wheel, and then found an old LARGE coffee can. Cut the bottom out of
that, a little silicon goop, a few short sheetmetal screws,,,, voila
1/2 hours work, and heat again!!!!!! Put back the interior trim, and
    only I know what's there.

Had the sagging/mushy rear end, had all the bushings replaced, much

guys had to use air hammers and chisels to change em.

A few electrical problems, most of which traced to broken wires at the
door joints. Things like power windows that quit in the middle of a
snowstorm. No lights or wipers on tail door (wagon). Here I replaced
the harness for $25 ea. rather than try to repair it.

Vacuum leaks seems to be a recurring theme!!!!

I pulled a caliper on my '85 744 a couple of years ago. One rubber
boot had torn and the piston was corroded so rebuilding looked like
a lost cause.

So I had the dealer replace both calipers. Then the car proceeded to
sieze seven (count 'em) calipers! Left one, right one and both at once
went they at 15000 mile intervals; some took out the rotor and some
didn't. It all got fixed on warranty but what a sucky deal. The
root cause was an improper guide pin. It was too fat and it caused the
outboard brake pad to jam. It took a visit by a guy from "Volvo
central engineering" out of Connecticut to figure this out.

Overdrive:
On both my 85 4dr and 87 wgn the overdrive relay has been acting strange.
Mine are both automatics, but the problem may be similar. My problem was
inside the relay. Take the cover off and you will find a circuit board
and a soldered on relay. The relay is so heavy that after many miles of
shaking, the solder joints break. I resoldered mine and it works again.

Rebuild vs. Rebuilts
Wet behind dust seal. Took calipers apart, cleaned and assembled, wetting
  the parts with brake fluid.
Next time changing pads, wet behind the dust seals. Picked up a pair of
rebuilts at a local parts store. Put them on, one caliper leaked so bad
that without any pressure, brake fluid leaked out. Returned calipers,
no way rebuilts from that place.
Took calipers apart and polished all 8 pistons, I guess I was lucky, because
there was no scoring. Assembled with Raybestos assembly fluid. No leaks.

cannot be down. I have no spare (that's on the road) at this time.

As to the soft suspension, shocks wouldn't have fixed what was
wrong with mine. The bushings were so shot, that the 'bolt hole'
bushing in the center was touching the outer part of the arm. The
rubber was 'gone'. Without changing shocks, the rear end rose 1/2" to

it and tried to rebuild it last February, but one piston was badly scored.
It's in there now, but I will have to replace it with a rebuilt later this
year.

For the trans, use Dexron automatic trans fluid or whatever your owner's
manual says use. John Kalinowski recommended that I switch the synthetic
and I will next change. As for rear end, check the book once again. Mine
uses something like normal 90W gear oil or something like that. The book
will tell you.

That's way too cheap. There are good rebuild and there are really bad
rebuilds. The cheapest I could find of the good rebuilts is $89 + core
deposit. I would go with a rebuilder who knows Volvos and all their little
rebuild problems.

Jim, any suggestions as to source for the calipers? Are you using
Texas, or do you have someone local? BTW - that price is my 'account'
price. I have a side business, and used that to open a 'cash account'

It looks similar to what I used to get right off the street.

Local for me is Manchester, N.H. I could deal in Nashua, not sure
if it's more or less of a pain for me.....

As to fluid price, I was referring to 'volvo' fluids vs. getting
them at a parts store. Also, I wasn't sure if the volvo really wanted
or needed a 'special' grade/type/brand of fluid(s) to get the most
longevity/least damage from the tranny and rear end. I know that I'll
use only volvo brake pads, vs. generic from the parts store. They just
    seem to work better.

I bought the used caliper from Steve's Volvo Parts in Dallas and will
probably buy the rebuilt from Brake Warehouse. He has tried and dumped
many of the caliper rebuilders in the past. He has finally settled on
two that seem to provide high quality.

                           Brake Warehouse
                           Attn: Randy Garlock
                           Greenville, SC

                           803-234-0704

Let me know if anyone ever fined a place that will replate/refinish brake
caliper pistons. These things are very easy to rebuild if the pistons
are fine. I even rebuild them without unhooking the brake lines.

Yes. If he sells rebuilts and they keep coming back to him as defective,
then he will dump the rebuilder.

They are not available separately. You have to buy the caliper as a unit.

You ask around.

I have change the fluid in a manual, but mine is the M47 which is a true
5-speed. I don't have overdrive in it. If you find out how to change the
filter in the overdrive, let me know. I do have it on the auto trans in

I changed that a number of years back, but don't remeber what I used. It

211.843Volvo seats very easy to fix.....APACHE::ROYI don't drive fast, I fly lowMon May 12 1997 13:1538

This is a seat story. '86 240 GL. The adjustment for the back of
the seat wasn't working right, and one side was at a different 'level'
than the other. I figured that the geared hinges were misaligned, or
something like that. I didn't have the time to mess with it, so I
found a vinyl seat in a 'yard' for cheap to put in place of the
    original.

A while later, the 'yard' seat started doing the same thing, so
decided to try repairing the original. NO problem! You can replace
    almost anything in these seats.

    	1. Remove seat from car.
    	2. Pull back the leather/vinyl to expose nuts and bolts near the
hinge area. Remove until you can separate the seat back from
     	    the seat bottom.
    	3. At the bottom of the seat back, you'll see metal rings that
hold the two halfs of leather/vinyl together.
    	4. Remove all rings, and separate leather/vinyl from frame. ONLY
pull material back until you can get to what you want to fix.
    	5. Do same to bottom (sorry, don't remember details of that).
    	6. Now that everything is exposed, you can change/tighten up
    	    whatever you want.
    	7. Reassembly is the reverse of whatever you did in the above.

I could have, but didn't replace the seat heat elements. I did replace
the geared hinge on the left (?) side. That made it so the adjustment
worked like it should. It also remove the tilt in the seat back. It's
amazing the damage that tilt can do to your back!!!! I rewired the
Lumbar support to make it work 'more' again. It had slackend and
didn't have the back support it should. Greased and cleaned up the
    rest.

The only bad part was the price of the hinge!!!!!

Glenn,

Call Merrimack Valley Garage in Manchester (local Volvo dealer). They have no
problems telling you what non-Volvo parts/fluids will do the job. FWIW, I use
the appropriate Mobil 1 synthetic in the Automatic transmission and the rear
end.

You might also ask them what they will charge for doing work you are
considering. Although I normally do my own work, I have been impressed with
how reasonable their prices are. And they do not just blindly charge book
rates. For instance, on my 740 I needed work done and just could not get
around to it myself. I had them adjust the valves, replace the timing belt and
replace the water pump. No labor charges for the water pump since they had to
take it off to replace the timing belt.

OK, MK Garage is pretty good. They pretty much know me at the
    parts counter.

As to mechanics, I found one in No. Manch., So. Hooksett. His
name is Gary Rondeau. That's all he does is Volvo's. And he does them
right. If he says I need a framitz to fix this that or the other,
he's usually right. I've yet to see them replace things shotgun.
And, about a year ago, I was having 'cash flow' problems, I went to
Gary, and right up front told him I wanted diagnosis (for which I'd
pay), then they tell me what parts, and I change them. He did that,
found one used part for something that couldn't wait, then gave me a
detailed list (verbal) to work from.

He keeps a large asst. of parts, and if you're looking for used
parts, and can't find them, call Gary. Another long story, but to
make it short, he had what I wanted, and cheap too!

His number is 644-7238. Expect a reasonable (or unreasonable) lead
time for an appointment. He's usually booked out a couple of weeks.

More feedback. Changing tranny fluid in a 4 speed w/elec.
    overdrive.

First I checked my haynes and chilton manuals for the car to see if
there was any info on doing this. Yup, plenty. Good photos showing
the area of concern. They also had the fluid info (RTFM!!!!!).

So, off to MK garage for filters etc. Now, having worked on many
types of vehicles, I ASSumed that the filters were throw-away. I asked
for the filters, and the parts guy looks at me as if I have 2 heads.
Says, no we never replace those. As it turns out, they are metal mesh
    screen filters. There are two.

First step, pull the bottom drain plug on the bottom of the main
tranny body. Then at the rear of the tranny is the OD unit. On the
bottom of that is a rectangular plate with qty 6 of 11mm bolts. Pull
those, but make sure your drain pan is underneath when you do it.
Otherwise, you get a fluid bath. It is a significant amount of fluid!
When you drop the plate, there is a coarse screen filter between it and
the OD guts. Drop all that and put aside.

Once in there, you will see 3 round 'plugs', and each has two holes
in it. Picture that stupid smiley face that was associated with 'have
a nice day' not to long ago. A circle with the two dots for eyes and a
smile. Lose the smile and leave the eye dots only center them in the
outer circle. Those dots are 1/8" to 3/16" I.D. What you need is a
one foot long piece of metal (I was gonna use a metal ruler, you know
the type that's on a ?tri-square?, and drill that, put two machine
screws or bolts thru and match the hole spacing. THEN you can unscrew
the 'plug' to get at the fine filter. Use the manual to figure out
which is which, because I don't think you want to pull the others. Too
    many small parts in there.

All that said, I didn't pull that inner filter. I had a lot to do,
    it started raining, etc.

The fluid I drained was bad!!!! It smelled bad and looked bad.

It does shift better now. I was getting a bit of 'scratch' going
into 2nd and 3rd, and had the clutch adjusted to compensate. (too
high). I was able to readjust to normal setting and it seems pretty
good now. Also, when I engage the OD, I goes in a bit more forcefully
now, it was a bit slow and mushy before.

I'll probably do this again before winter, because I'm sure this
new fluid will flush a lot of crap out. My theory is that this car was
a yuppy mom car. Drive it, ignore it unless it doesn't start, sell it
before you gotta put $$$$$$ into it. Not a car for someone who doesn't
    like working/playing with this stuff.

Use type F auto trans fluid according to the mechanic at MK garage.

I also took a look at the rear end fluid, and topped it off. I put
in enough that it started coming back out, and you could see that the
color of the old was VERY dark. The manuals say that the rear end
fluid is changed at 1000-1500 miles from new, and then never again.
Any opinions on this? I didnt' change it because I only had one jug of
it, and didn't want to partial fill it.

hope this helps someone,,,,, thanks, Glen(n)

211.861One last non Volvo note...DONVAN::WETZELTue May 27 1997 14:4320
Hi Glenn, I couldn't help myself from asking for Tuesday morning
abuse.

OK. I have to set the record strait. The reason I beat the beemer with
my little 16 valve, dual port FI, 1.8 Integra was mainly operator error.

We were at the red light on the corner of Dunstable and Harris heading
south (Right turn to go past Shell). It's about 50' across and you
have about 100' to merge from 3 lanes to 1.

So beemer guy's probably thinking it'll be no sweat smoken this guy.
I'm thinking I'll go up to 5000 before I hit 2nd. Light turns
green. Seems that once the Beemer guy saw it was going to take more
than he thought he slammed it into 2nd and floored it. Ended up
breaking loose and laying down a 30' burnout. I was gone. A rare
moment to cherish. I'll grow up someday. NOT!

Now, back to your regularly scheduled Volvo discussion.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly, how in heck to keep the thing tied to
the ground? I envision having to replace all rubber suspension
bushings etc, w/poly, or something more solid. I've broken loose going
around corners before (accidentally of course), and the wheel-hop is
vicious!!!!! So I can't imagine the thing with real power pushing
things. That's also why I think an auto trans would be better.....

    	Need help from 240 DIY'ers.

Where is the timing mark on the B230 4 cyl? ('86 240). If I
stand in front of the car and look at the crank pulley, I'd expect it
somewhere near 1 o'clock or so. There seems to be nothing there. It
does look like something around 12 o'clock..... ????? Please
describe what I should be seeing.

Also, is there vacuum advance on these? A very quick look, and I
couldn't see one. Just an electrical 'plug' at the base of the
distributor. If that is the case, what is the timing procedure?

    	thanks, Glenn

The timing mark is near the 12:00 position. You may have to rub a piece of
chalk over it to get it to appear well. There is no vacuum advance on that
car, you just put the light on it and set the timing at idle (make sure
the idle is set properly first). There is a 'timing ruler' on the plastic
timing belt cover that will help you set the timing. Make sure you look at the
mark from the 12:00.

If someone did not reinstall the key in the timing pulley when they last did
the timing belt, then the timing mark may not be in the correct position.

Jim

AAccckkkkkk!!!!! Would that timing ruler be about 1 to 1.25" in
width, and sticks out from the timing cover about 1/4"????? If so, the
molded part is there, but it looks as if a fan belt had it for lunch.
No timing marks that I can see. Cleaned with solvent, no luck. I did
put the light to it and the notch in the pulley shows up approx. where
    it should.

211.86986 cent part gives 20% boost in performanceZEKE::BURTONJim Burton, DTN 381-6470Mon Jun 02 1997 12:0320
I happened into something very interesting on the 740 (B230F, non-turbo) this
weekend. There is vacuum a hose that runs from the intake manifold to the fuel
pressure regulator on the fuel rail. That pressure regulator diverts a
continuously circulating flow of gasoline (from the tank and back to the tank)
to the fuel injectors. At high vacuum (idle), it supplies low pressure to the
rail, and the highest fuel pressure to the rail occurs at zero vacuum (WOT).

About a year ago, I replaced that hose with a piece of windshield washer hose.
The inside diameter of the hose was a little smaller than the one it replaced,
but I didn't think much of it. I clamped each end of the vacuum hose to keep
it from leaking.

Yesterday, I replaced that hose with a piece of fuel line that has about twice
the inside diameter of the opening (not twice the diameter, twice the area).
Each end was clamped like on the old hose. The result is the car has about 20%
more power. You may want to check the hoses on your car. A leaking hose
in this application as well as one with a small diameter will produce anemic
performance.

    	Arrrgggghhhhhh!!!!!!

Help Please..... Any ideas on how to find an electrical short? I
have one fuse that keeps blowing. It happened once about a month ago,
I replaced the fuse, and all was well. Last night, it was gone again,
and the fuse keeps blowing. (I'm running out of fuses 8*))))).

The fuse controls dash lights, RF and RR 'parking' lights. Not
sure of when exactly this showed up again, so I'm having a problem
trying to remember what has changed since it was working... The last
repair I did was to change hood release cable, so it is possible that
I caused it by moving wiring harnesses.....

My MO will be to pull the fuse box, and remove/add wires until I
can isolate which is the problem. This is a HARD short. I know this
'cuz I replaced the 8A fuse with a 16A fuse, and it blows within short
    order.

My Haynes manual shows the 2 parking lights, dash lighting, dash
light dimmer, and bulb failure warning sensor on the circuit. Oops,
also seat belt buckle light, ashtray light. Looks like that's all.

So, anyone dealt with this? Any other ideas how to quickly trace
this? I do have an ohm-meter, so don't buy stock in fuses yet.....

Normally I would view this as a fun challenge, but I really don't
have time for this right now..... as I said,,,, AARRRRRGGHHHHHH!!!!!

thanks, I do appreciate any efforts to help....

RE: Finding shorts

All it takes is a wiring diagram and hours of 'fun'. You have isolated the
circuit. Now you need to start probing positive wires to find which one is
contacting ground. Look especially well in areas where you recently disturbed
wires with other work. Most of all *smile*....you could have a Honda or
Toyota and you would be missing out on all the fun.

BTW, are you still interested in seeing the timing marks on a B230F?

Jim
211.872I figured you'd have some magic trick for me.....LAPDOS::ROYI don't drive fast, I fly lowTue Jun 03 1997 12:1030

Fun.... like I said, another time, this would have a higher fun
factor. Probing positive wires, yup, that was pretty much what I
figured on. My guess is that something fell, or got pushed into an
exposed contact somewhere. My son was in the car this weekend, and
he carries lots of 'hardware', so one place will be by the seatbelt
receivers between the seats. Another will be by the taillight, 'cuz
we went out to my land Sat. and had the rear loaded with stuff. I
have found 'lots' of wires with cracked insulation over the last
1.5 years, so another thought was that when I moved the harness under
the dash, something made contact, but that was some time ago, and the
    lights were working (I think).

Not sure of why you mention Honda or Toyota, but yes, I already
do smile especially because I DON'T have one of them. Why did you
mention them? Are the electrics a nightmare in them?

Yes, I do want to look at the timing marks on your car, but right
now, that got shifted to a relatively low priority. The timing is one
of those, wanna check to make sure it isn't off too bad. The reason
for that is the way it starts. Sometimes it makes a sound when
starting that I can't describe, but for some reason, retarded timing
comes to mind. The sound is almost like a low RPM pinging sound..????

All in all, for 250,500 miles, I have nothing to complain about....

thanks Jim, I'll be in touch...

When my doorlock fuse kept blowing, I put in a circuit breaker using spade

    	AHA!!!!! Gotcha ya' little ()^^*%*%)&^(&^.....

Got it! On the way home, stopped at the parts place, got a pile
of fuses (looked for ckt brkr, couldn't find).

    	- expose fuse block, determine hot and load side.
    	- disconn. battery, ohm load side, confirm short
    	- pull fuse block, pull 2 spade lugs (ea w/2 wires) from
    	  load side of fuse holder
    	- ohm each wire pair, one shorted, other not
    	- put not shorted wire back onto block, power up, what works, what
doesn't. (dash lights worked, runnings lights don't (phew!!!!
now pretty sure I don't have to get into harness under dash!!!)
    	- STOP and THINK.... these cars don't normally just start to grow
shorts, what happened in last week. went to land with 1 ton o
schtufff in back. Nothing touched or changed in front light.
    	- pull lid on floor of rear (station wagon), and there's the
    	  trailer harness.
    	- pull out harness and dangle off back of car.
    	- ohm wire pair..... short gone ?!?!?!?!
    	- snip, tape, snip, tape, snip, tape, snip, tape,.... etc.....
    	- no more trailer harness (was there when I bought car)
    	- reattach, power up, all lights work no blown fuse (YES!!!!!)
    	- now LR directional out, bad connection where twist on socket lead
swipes power plate (volvo owners know this one)..... gave me fits
on drive later, but now works ok.....
    	- in process wondered if other defunct interior lights would work,
found smashed contacts at rear ashtray light fixture, taped and
    	  stuffed (don't care today)
    	- found a crimp splice under driver carpet rotted, spliced and
soldered don't even know what wire is for, don't care today.

NOTE: if some day you volvo owners are looking for a mystery
relay/control box. At the extreme front left of drivers floor corner,
under carpet is a metal plate that covers harness as it goes from dash
near hood release and heads for rear. There are a couple of 'boxes'
attached to harness under that plate. What are they? don't care
    today.

Where exactly was the short? Don't care today. Harness was an
after market, with conversion box to convert separate tail/brake/turn
lights into integrated units like on 'merican cars. Splices were
sloppy, wrap and tape, not soldered. Just asking for problems.

Ahhh life is good. I sort of figured it had to be something stupid
like this, 'cuz although volvos do have their problems with
connections, (bad ones) they don't just start mysteriously start
    shorting out......

next crisis.... (just kidding 8*) )

OK, one more. Replacing hood release cable. There are a couple
of tricks. Mr. Cox is correct, the mechanics at Volvo in Manchester
are great. As I walked out with new cable, mechanic stopped me and
asked if I had ever done one (oh oh!!)? Said no, and he gave me a
    tip.

There is a one use lock ring that holds the assembly to the
firewall. When installing, you have ONE shot at getting it in.

First, though I had to get it out. Kind of like taking a tie-wrap
off without cutting it. How to release catch? I ended up grabbing
the plastic part inside under dash right next to firewall, and bending
it at a right angle until it snapped off. Then remove cable. Once
you look at it, it's obvious.

Oh yeah, how to get hood open w/broken cable? Lay on ground, reach
up behind grill, find release wire at catch, and pull down. Hope you
    have skinny arms!!!!!

To install. The locking ring must be mated to firewall, be flush,
and be straight!!!!!!!!!! Then you push cable housing into locking
ring. As you push, fingers on ring expand, and grip firewall. Rest of
install is reverse of removal..... If you mess up putting in locking
ring, there is most likely NO recovery. Another $41 for a new
    cable.....

    	hope this helps someone
