3133.0. "Urgent Help with some questions please" by JOBURG::BERETTA () Wed May 21 1997 11:45

    Hi,

I have just recieved the following list of questions from a potentially
large EDI site (Will be used to track containers among other things for
the whole of South Africa). Some of these questions I can answer, but
others are rather more difficult, I have one day to respond (a bit
unfair) so I ask please for any input from anyone who may have
    something to add.

    3) Does the translator have the facility to add new syntax versions

    4) Does it support level A and B character sets

    5) Does the mapper enforce mandatory and conditional fields on the
    in-house file

    6) Can the translator do character conversions selectable by field,
    e.g.
convert illegal A level character "@" to for e.g. "/"

    7) does the translator have strict syntax validation with the ability
    to bypass
    this strict compliance check

    8) What is the speed of the translation component ? How many 1K EDIFACT
    messages
(1 message per interchange) can it translate and construct on the
    proposed
    platform

    9) What is the speed of the mapping tool ? How many 1K EDIFACT messages
(1 message per interchange) can it translate and construct on the
    proposed
    platform

    10) Please elaborate on the workflow capabilities

    12) Can the proposed solution handle transaction routing based on a
    value or
a range of values within the EDIFACT messagefor e.g. an account number
    within
    a NAD segment.

    13) Can the software accomodate application generated interchange
    control
    reference numbers ?

    14) Does the software have the facility to configure new standard
    directories/messages/segment/elements

    15) Does the software have the facility to load trading partner
    profiles from
    an external source

    17) Does the software have the facility to migrate from the test to the
    production enviroment

    18) Does the software have an off-the-shelf buitl-in function that will
automatically create and transmit a CONTRL message for EDIFACT syntax
    errors/
functional acknowledgement, selectable by trading partner/message type.

    19) Does the software automatically interpret incoming CONTRL messages
    for
EDIFACT and does it match it to theprimary message ? Is there a user
    definable
time-out alert in the case where a CONTRL message is not received ?

    20) Can the CONTRL message be customised by document type/trading
    partner

    23) Can alerts be sent to Cellular phoes, pagers, E-mail etc
    automatically

    25) When sending or receiving messages can automatic acknwledgement be
    sent
to clients via means specified by the client ( e.g. fax, e-mail, cell
    etc)

    27) Would the software automatically create a trading partner profile
    from an
interchange received from an unknown trading partner

    39) what is Digital's policy regarding interactive EDI

    40) Is the software year 2000 compliant, and is there a year 2000
    compliance
    certificate available ?

    Thanks

3133.3UNIX on alpha 4000JOBURG::BERETTAWed May 21 1997 14:167
Many thanks for such quick responses,

The platform proposed is Digital UNIX on an Alpha 4000 (not sure which
chip 400 something MHZ) with plenty of disks (+- twenty 4GB) and 512MB
    memory.

Peter,

The questions really need fuller explanation, they could mean almost
anything. Can they be interpreted using general "Translator" parlure
or are terms specific to DEC/EDI? e.g. does "mapper" mean Filebridge
or any generic "mapper"?

> 3) Does the translator have the facility to add new syntax versions

There are at least two very different interpretations of this. I will
answer for one of them - yes it does, as each new version appears we
make it available in the IMPDEF format (e.g. D96A, D97A, ...)

> 4) Does it support level A and B character sets

Yes but then again it all depends upon what you mean by "support"

> 5) Does the mapper enforce mandatory and conditional fields on the
> in-house file

Our translation components do detect mandatory and conditional field failures.
If you so program, there is no reason while Filebridge couldn't either (but
it would require large maps. But then again ... what question are they
really asking?

> 7) does the translator have strict syntax validation with the ability
> to bypass
> this strict compliance check

Yes and yes but then again what do they mean by "bypass".
DEC/EDI supports full customization of syntax tables and so users
can modify them to be as relaxed as they like.

So what is the proposed platform?

> 9) What is the speed of the mapping tool ? How many 1K EDIFACT messages
> (1 message per interchange) can it translate and construct on the
> proposed
> platform

What platform?

> 10) Please elaborate on the workflow capabilities

None builtin, but it may be possible to integrate with a workflow package.
What do they really mean and want for workflow?

> 6) Can the translator do character conversions selectable by field,
> e.g.
> convert illegal A level character "@" to for e.g. "/"

I imagine you could code this into a map - particularly with callouts.

> 12) Can the proposed solution handle transaction routing based on a
> value or
> a range of values within the EDIFACT messagefor e.g. an account number

This would require application integration, with new app written to
receive documents and then post them on to the final destination.

> 13) Can the software accomodate application generated interchange
> control
> reference numbers ?

Again depends upon interpretation. We have "numbering schemes" which can
be customized to let users supply them. It all depends upon how
they wish to supply such numbers.

> 14) Does the software have the facility to configure new standard
> directories/messages/segment/elements

Again depends upon what they really mean. On my interpretation YES.

> 15) Does the software have the facility to load trading partner
> profiles from
> an external source

No. at least not as standard. Some customers have written add-on's that
do this.

> 17) Does the software have the facility to migrate from the test to the
> production enviroment

I would answer yes, again what question are they really asking?

> 18) Does the software have an off-the-shelf buitl-in function that will

DEC/EDI V2.1D

Perhaps - by adding code to the TRACK function.

> 20) Can the CONTRL message be customised by document type/trading
> partner

Dave Nelson already answered this.

> 23) Can alerts be sent to Cellular phoes, pagers, E-mail etc

With add-on's from the Dallas Practice.

> 25) When sending or receiving messages can automatic acknwledgement be
> sent
> to clients via means specified by the client ( e.g. fax, e-mail, cell

would require application integration work

> from an

No.

> 39) what is Digital's policy regarding interactive EDI

Be very precise about what is meant by Interactive EDI. Quote standards.

DEC/EDI V3.2 will contain our statement of compliance.

M
3133.5Can you extrapolate from thisSYSTEM::HELLIARhttp://samedi.reo.dec.com/Thu May 22 1997 19:4732
    Peter,

We have nothing like that, but with my lowly test system (MigRgb) I
get the following for a test that sends 1000 low priority maps. The TFN
ans Import/Export are scheduled to run every 5 minutes, and the
import/export gateway loops back files and reimports them as a
post-export job. These then travell through the system where a fetch
job is waiting to fetch all of them. This means that after the first 5
minutes I have work going in both directions.

I repeat this a number of times, archiving of the spent data and get
    WORST times of:

Time from 1st to last post (1000th) :	1411 seconds
Time from 1st post to last fetch (1000th) :	2755 seconds
Time to archive : 484 seconds

MigRgb is a DEC 3000-M500 with 2*2GB disks, 128MB of memory, running
Digital Unix 3.2C and Informix 7.12-UC1.

The maps I use are the EDIFACT
MINVOICE ones supplied with the CommandCenter Mapper Compiler and are
    approximately 1K in size.

It is untuned, and also has Oracle 7 running on it! So, performance
    figures could be better.

Note that times include both mapping, translation, and some limited
    comms.

    Graham
