1594.41Should a 4x4 have any steering twitch when starting up?UNIFIX::FRENCHBill French 381-1859Mon Apr 28 1997 09:3612
    I test drove both a new and slightly used (6Kmikes) F150 4x4 this weekend.
    I noticed on the used vehicle, a slight click or twitch in the steering
    whenever I stepped on the gas when starting from a stop. Is a bit of
    this expected in a 4x4 or is there something wrong. (It is warranteed
    by the selling dealer for 36K miles/ 3 years, but I don't want to buy
    someone else's problems. I didn't notice this in the new one that I
    drove but maybe this is expected after break in. Any opinions?

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Was this a "full-time" 4wd system? If it was, I'd be looking for worn
    suspension parts - like joints/bushings on the control arms - that are
    allowing the front wheels to relocate...

    Nope, lever on the floor - 2WH-4WH-N-4W
    	With Automatic hubs.

    I had just taken it out of 4WD in a dirt parking lot. Maybe it had to
    do with hubs unlocking.

1594.44locked hubs?CSC32::HULLMon Apr 28 1997 14:4311
    re: 1594.43

    After taking the truck out of 4wd you have to backup one full car
    (truck) length to unlock the automatic hubs. If you do not, then the
    hubs are still locked in, and when you turn at slow speeds it will feel
    a little different. I would have the truck checked out before purchase
    in case there is abnormal wear in the suspension.

    Good luck
    Brett

	I've got a 97 F150, non-4 wheel drive. There are two known
	problems and fixable via the dealer.

	1. Play or a jerking motion in the steering wheel. Ford
	   recommends a re-packing. The dealer told me it does not
	   always fix the problem they normally just order the
	   part and replace. Mine will be done with the next
	   oil change. A 30 minute replacement of one of the steering
	   linkage pieces.

	2. A sqeeking noise, simular to a ratling chain in the front end
	   between 15 - 35 miles per hour. The fix is to remove the top
	   shock bolt, repack and retighten. Works like a champ. The
	   noise went away and never returned.
