110.22What's with the hubs? Why don't mfgrs. wise up?MKOTS3::J_GALLAGHERWed Mar 26 1997 17:2511
    What's with this lousy or delicate hub crap? Too many stupid parts...
    even on the manual ones. Why doesn't the industry wise up?

    Dana builds Dodge's vacuum shifter "Disengaging Diff" which DOESN'T break
    and lasts as long as the diff. does. Mine, (89 Dakota), has 162Kmi. and
    hasn't mechanically failed or missed yet...even in sub-zero weather.

    I ain't EVER getting out (usually once I'm in trouble) to engage a hub
    again if I can help it. Guess I'll have to stick with the `goat'.

       A locking hub is the ultimate in simplicity and is good for gas
    economy. Nothing rotates but the spindle itself when unlocked.
    The vacuum locking systems, even when unlocked are rotating the spindle
    stub-shafts and a cv joint for each side. A poor system in the eyes
    of less moving mechanical parts, and extra drag when not needed.

110.24No less reliable than the average FWD vehicle...MKOTS3::J_GALLAGHERWed Mar 26 1997 17:4820
    John,

    Yep, you're right when it comes to the 1/2 shafted units like the
    Dakotas or the under 3/4 ton GM's cause they're built like FWD
    vehicles. But FWD vehicles are pretty darned reliable, 1/2 shafts and
    all...

    A year ago I sold a 2.2 FWD Chryco with 250Kmiles on it and only
    went through 1 set of 1/2 shafts. The engine, on the other hand, was
    nothing short of amazing. It was NEVER apart, is now with it's 3rd owner,
    and hasn't died yet!

    Once I lost the oil pan drain plug at 70mph on the outer Boston
    beltway (495), and I had to drive it another 3 miles with no oil pressure
    before I could pull over to check out the problem. I replaced the drain
    plug, put in 4 new qts. of oil, and never looked back...that happened at
    100K mi.!!

    Of course, oil changes and and 4oz of Slick 50 every 3Kmi. didn't seem
    to hurt it any.

    You might not ever have to get out and lock the hubs but it sure sucks
    if you're out in the slop and that vacuum hose hangs on a stick and
    gets yanked loose. They you get to get out and crawl under your truck
    and re-connect the hose so the front end will engage again. Doesn't
    happen too often with highway snow-cruisers, but I see it frequently
    out where the real 4WD's play. ;-)
