1841.0. "Converting Notes entry from DECnet IV to V" by OSOSPS::KAGEYAMA (Trust, but Verify) Fri Feb 21 1997 13:53

I'm moving my environment from DECnet Phase IV to DECnet-Plus. In this
process I have to convert my Notebook entry to DECnet-Plus format, i.e.
Notes> MODIFY ENTRY xxxx/FILE=DEC:.site-code.nodename::notes_file_name.
I have to find site codes of all Notes file entry. Is this true?
Are there any convenient way to meet my requiment?

DNS object names of notes are not widely used, I believe.

	Not true. Almost all easynet nodes have their Phase IV node
	synonyms also registered in the DEC: namespace, so you don't
	need to modify all your notebook entries.

	I'm been using NOTES on a Phase V node for years for example,
	and all my notebook entries use Phase IV nodenames (except
	for the ones I connect to via TCP/IP of course).

You don't have to use the DECnet-Plus node name style. Using it avoids a
synonym translation the first time you access the conference, but the node name,
whether Phase IV or -Plus style, will be stored in your local CDI cache anyway.

My notebook has a mix of DEC:.site.node::conference and NODE::CONFERENCE
entries, although when adding a new conference I usually put the site code in.

You can use the FINDNODE utility (I forget where I got it from) to quickly find
the site code for any DECnet node.

	And if you are on Digital UNIX using DECnet/OSI and you have
	the DNAUTIL subset (if it's still named that) installed, you
	can use the syntofull utililty:

vaxcpu> /usr/field/syntofull funyet vaxcpu humane rdgeng
funyet => DEC:.mro.funyet
vaxcpu => DEC:.zko.vaxcpu
humane => DEC:.mro.humane
rdgeng => DEC:.REO.RDGENG

Thanks, Jeff and Paul.

Now it works with my Phase IV style entry.

First I got "remote node is unreachable" error message. The problem is
the DECnet full name of my node is not defined in a DEC: namespace on my
node, although I defined the DEC: namespace as my default name space.
After I changed it with DECNET$CONFIGURE.COM, eveything went fine.
