| well, if i were realigning, in the AFC i would put Indy in the Central
and the expansion team in the East. In the NFC I would put Arizona
in the west and the other expansion team in the east. But from what
I've been reading there will be no realignment and they will put
the expansion teams in the two four team divisions.

| rumor has it that Jacksonville will go to the AFC Central and Carolina
to the NFC West. There are owners that don't want to change. Bidwill
is one of them. He likes the extra $$ he gets from the NFC East
visitors.

At some point, the NFL should just tell Bidwell to stick it, and fight
the lawsuit with him if necessary. You threaten to move a team
anywhere in the country every few years, you give up your right to
claim any divisional "rivalry"...

| The Boston Globe had a table that was rumored to be under consideration that
showed the Colts in the Central and it showed Tampa Bay and Seattle swapping
conferences with Atlanta going in to the NFC East and Seattle going in to
the NFC West. For some reason they still had Dallas in the East.
Problem is, soon after they realign teams will move around and it won't
make sense again.

I heard on the FAN, in an interview with Wellington Mara that Atlanta's
ownership is against moving out of the NFC West. They like their rivalry
with San Fran and Nawlins.
I think Dallas would still be in the East because of Washington and
Philly.
Wellington said he wouldn't mind seeing Dallas go because he thought that
the rivalries with Philly and Washington vs the Giants were stronger
than that with Dallas, because they'd been playing each other longer....

| It ain't just Bidwill. Jerry Jones doesn't want to leave the NFC East
either and said the 'Boys *MUST* play the Cards twice a year. There
are tons of 'Boys fans out here. It's been that way for decades and
Jones knows it.

| There is only one reason why the Clampetts err.. Smiths, owners of the
Falcons, want to stay in the NFC West - MONEY. Staying in the West
gives them games against the two highest paying franchises in terms of
revenues doled out to visiting teams - Carolina, which will guarantee
$1.28M per game to visitors, and SF, which currently has the leagues
largest payout, $890K.
the 'Skins vs 'Boys rivalry, I believe, has diminished a little in the
past several years. Maybe a noter from DC can provide some insight (or
correct me if I'm wrong). Giants and Philly are big. Gotta believe
that the Cards rivalry is getting big with Bloody Ryan out west now.

| The way I heard it is that Atlanta is heading West, maybe LA once the
Rams go to St. Louis.
Also, New Orleans is rumored as another team maybe on the move.
The league should wait until the musical chairs stops afore changing any
lineups.

I don't know how much of a 'rivalry' there is here... but as mentioned
many times earlier it's all about $money$. Before the Cards moved here,
the Dallas Cowboys were shown on TV weekend after weekend, year after
year, decade after decade, ad nauseum. Consequently, as Mikey pointed
out, there are very many Cowboy fans here -- almost as if they were Phoenix'
home team. Now the money. The 'Boys have been the only game to sell out
Sun Devil stadium every year. Since the stadium holds over 70K, it's
also Jones' biggest road cash-haul of the season, neither of them care to
give it up -- although I too would realign the sh!t out of them.

| Atlanta moving is a new one. I seriously doubt that would happen.
There have been absolutely no rumors regarding this in the local papers
or sprots shows. Besides, the Smiths just got a brand new dome. All
they need is a team to play in it.

| A new scheduling formula was enacted due to the
addition of Jacksonville & Charlotte. Each of
the 30 teams will play:
-- 8 games within its division
-- 4 games against non division teams within its conference
-- 4 games against teams from the other conference
I'm sure realignment will never happen but you never
know with the NFL, who would of thought Jacksonville
would be the next expansion team rather than St. Louis
or Baltimore.

The way I heard it was that Charlotte was going to the AFC Central. If this
is a true, what a sham. I think that the NFL should throw the whole thing
up in the air and start again. Of course, this will never happen. Not having
Atlanta and Charlotte, 3 hours apart, in the same division is dumb.
Re. a few back.
I haven't heard that the Falcons are moving and would be suprised if they do.
They don't draw too bad here, and if they ever got their act together they
would sell out every game. Considering you have Georgia Tech and UGA close
by, they do quite well.
Couldn't agree more about Jeff George. He showed his lack of guts in Indy.
Can remember games where he would sack himself. It's too bad Hebert can't
stay healthy, the man has got a major league set of b*lls. I wish the hell
the Falcons would abandon the run and shoot as well.

| Charlotte to NFC West, Jax to AFC Central. Guess I need to look at the
old Atlas, as I didn't realize that the Mississippi made a hard right at
St. Loius then doubled back through Charlotte and Atlanta.
The run and shoot has got to go. Heard on the radio this morning that
George and the Falcons are at the top in statistical categories
offensively (passing) in the 4th quarter. Big Deal. Without an
effective running game you go nowhere.

Here is something that I work on back in 1987 and now I see that the Will
McDonough borrow my idea? I based my plans for expansion and realignment
of the NFL on Earl Weavers revised Major League Baseball. This is after
St. Louis became Phoenix and before the current expansion cities of Charlotte
and Jacksonville. I didn't base this alignment on TV ratings.
The "Weaver Plan"
Revised For The NFL
A plan on the same idea as Earl Weaver's for the NFL. This would mixed teams
into geographic divisions but keep the AMERICAN CONFERENCE and the NATIONAL
CONFERENCE. The conferences would be broken into two divisions, EASTERN and
WESTERN each with eight teams. The divisions would be farther broken into two
conferences(like the old NFL). Keep the sixteen game regular season. Teams
would play teams in their conferences twice and division opponents once (build
in tie breaker for home field and playoffs). This leaves six games free. The
conferences winners in each league would play each other(like the present
schedule). Other teams schedule would be based on their past record(again like
the present schedule). The remaining four games would be for inter-league play
on a rotating conference basis.
The playoff format could look one of two ways.
A. The conferences winners would play for the division titles.
The division winners would play for AFC and NFC titles.
The AFC and NFC title winners would then play in the Super Bowl.
B. Teams finishing one and two in each conference would qualify for the
playoffs.(*)
The first place team from one conference would play the second place team
from the other conference but still in the same division. The conference
winner would have home field regardless of their overall record.
The winners would then play for the division championship.

Looks like a list of former NFL/USFL teams.
This mix of teams is set up into geographic divisions within a region. Natural
rivalries will be a by product of this. The owners might see a major beneficent
by cutting the cost of travel.This however didn't balance the strength of the
divisions or the conferences.
Here is a plan like Mr. Weaver's as we set up geographic divisions and align
teams regardless if they where in the NFC or AFC,but create a new AMERICAN
FOOTBALL CONFERENCE and NATIONAL FOOTBALL CONFERENCE.
The schedule and playoff format could look the same as above.

Expansion Team (1) CAROLINE/JACKSONVILLE. Teams are interchangable. It was a
toss up between Dallas, New Orleans and Atlanta as what division to place them.
Here I intermix NFC and AFC teams for best geographic mix. This try to somewhat
balances the two Conferences by moving four old NFC teams to the "new" AFC(like
back in 1970 when the NFL moved three teams to "old" AFL to create the AFC and
NFC).
