I think that DrM has fallen off the wagon and is badly in need of a
SPORTS fix, because I believe I heard him on EEI this morning giving
his "greatest sports moments" as Doug Williams lighting up the Donks,
the Lakers beating the Celtics, blah blah blah. No mention was made of
any Houston teams or Wilt Chamberlain...

It's true Glenn. Unfortunately I do not have a car phone otherwise
I would've called in my Three Greatest Moments in SPORTS...

	1. Wilt choking against Russell in the 7th game of the 1968 Eastern
Conference Finals.

	2. Wilt choking against Russell in the 7th game of the 1969
Championship Finals.

	3. Wilt choking against Willis Reed in the 7th game of the 1970
Championship Finals.

In hokey they call this phenomenon a "natural hat trick".

    fine for him.

2.Explaining to a weeping woman who saw Hulk Hogan get pummeled on

Ok for real? In person or on TV?

    2. Tigers win it all in '84...
    3. Pistons winning back to back (only # 3 because it was so easy and
they got hosed out of it the year before).

    3. Stretching for a double play to end a potential rally against a
rival in an industrial softball tournament in Indiana. Then
led off the next inning and hitting a triple because I did a Reggie
and stood and watched it sail over the RF's haid instead of running
it out. We scored 8 runs that inning and knocked them out...

I'll never forget when channel 56 was just getting started they
were broadcasting a Celtic game (circa late 60's), and Heinshon
and Aurebach were the announcers. Well they're both berating the
officiating (big surprise) when Aurebach gets so mad he leaves the
booth to go yell at the referee. Shortly thereafter Heinshon joins
him, while the game is still going on. So the cameras are following
the action up and down the court sans broadcasters. Main, you can't
get that kind of entertainment today.

All three moments come within a magical 16 month period for any boy
growing up in New York area at that time.

    1) July thru the end of the 1969 Met's baseball season. It was one
incredible ride. Most memorable was Seaver's near perfecto against
Cubs and game 4 of WS against the Birds.

    2) Jets superbowl victory over Colts.

    3) The Knicks winning game 5 without Reed and then game 7 when Wilis
heroically comes out and hits two shots as the Knicks trounce the
befuddled Lakers to win their first NBA title.

    Other than that:

    1) 1980 Olympic victory over USSR

    2) California's lateral kickoff return at the end of Stanford game.

    3) Houston upsetting UCLA in Astrodome 1968. Alcindor's first
    collegiate loss.

    1. Watching the last two games of the 1979 World Series, in person, in
Baltimore. Willie Stargell's greatest moment, Earl Weaver's most
        agonizing.

    2. 1986 baseball season and postseason. My re-birth of interest in
baseball. Just far too much to detail in here, and not all painful
memories from a Red Sox' fan's perspective.

    3. Jim O'Brien's game-winning kick in the Super Bowl V lifting the
Colts over the hated Cowboys. Not a great game, and my hero Johnny
U was knocked out early on, but I was at that impressionable age.

    > Ah, I remember it like yesterday,I was 13 and had lots of strange
    > things happening but the sports world was bliss. Too bad the youngsters
    > of today will never get this feeling from money hungry baseball.

Oh, I think that in recent years the young fans of the Reds, Twins,
Blue Jays and Braves have accumulated plenty of good memories. Kids
have a way of seeing what's relevant and what's not and blocking the
rest of it out. It's the adults who do most of the complaining, and
did so when we were kids. When I grew up following baseball in this
period, to my disinterested dad it just wasn't the same as in the
heyday of the Pirates in the late 50's/early 60's. To his dad and
grandfather, nothing could match baseball's pre-TV days, and they
stopped going to Forbes Field, and I quote, "when the Waner brothers
retired". You see, it's all relative... ;-)

I agree, I was just using some interesting baseball teams as an
example; the love doesn't have to be for baseball. Basketball and
football players aren't playing for free, and it's not the money that
turns off kids. If it were, Jordan and the Shaq would be getting hurt

#1 - Crossing the 13.1 mile mark before the winners finished the race,
and then finishing the Boston Marathon last April in just under
5 hours. Not bad for only two months of preparation and it was
    	 a dream come true.

#2 - Playing basketball against, and winning, a player who the
following year got a full paid scholarship to UMASS. Wonder
    	 what could have been.

#3 - Teaching countless people over the years that technique is more
important than raw talent. (ie. could beat anyone to 40 yards
in the 100 yard dash because of the blocks, couldn't beat anyone
    	 to 60 yards though 8^)

Then there are the ones I've observed.

#1 - USA over Russia, but really too young to appreciate it.

#2 - Bird's left handed runner with no time on the clock to beat Philly
    	 four games to three.

#3 - The British runner at the olympics last year, who showed what the
olympic spirit is all about. Even though he was disqualified,
the stands were roaring for him as he hobbled his way around the
track and it brought tears to my eyes.

    Scott,

Lemond's victory was really number 3 for me.
Number one was the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey victory.
Number two was the Jets winning the Super Bowl 12-Jan-1969

I feel the three top moments of my sports fan life, has been; 91 World
series, Reds unexpected sweep of the A's.

The Buffalo Bills Playoff come back against Houston in 1992.

The third would have to be when Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson.

    1. Canada defeats USSR in deciding game of 72 Summit Series in Moscow.

    2. Gretzky to Lemieux for Canada Cup clinching goal in 87.

    3. Ben Johnson running 9.79 over 100 metres with plenty of gas
to spare. Major disappointment after Steroid scandal breaks..
but hey, most track and fielders are on one thing or another
anyway. Doubt if we'll ever see a human run as fast as johnson
did ( he would have beat 9.79 if he did not slow up and raise his
       arm in victory ) clean.

I was just think about Johnson's run today. Steroids or not it was a thing
 of beauty to watch........

Johnson's style was pure power. He went out and attacked the track, and was
a great competitor. Too bad about the 'roids, but he deserved to get caught,
as does anyone who dopes.

Just too bad FloJo got away with it.

Here are, in my opinion, the 3 greatest moments in sports:

    1. Muhammed Ali winning the title the first time.

    2. Muhammed Ali winning the title the second time.

    3. Muhammed Ali winning the title for the third time.

In other words, the 3 greatest moments were by the "greatest of al
