121.0. "Interested in rowing?" by AIDEV::DOUCETTE (More Chuck for the buck!) Thu Jun 10 1993 17:47

Does anyone in the SPORTS audience row (crew) now (or did you in the
past)?

If so, please tell us about where/when you do or did row.

If not, and you might be interested in an introduction to rowing,
please post a note to that effect.

I currently row for a Community Rowing Inc. which has a boat house in
Brighton (near Boston) on the Charles River. They have intro-rows (a
day when anyone can come in off the street to give the sport a try)
and a learn-to-row program. I'd be happy to write down all the dates
for the intro-rows and post them if anyone is interested.

Also, there is a brand new rowing club in Shrewsbury which rows on
Lake Quinsigamond (sp?). I believe that club also has introductory
programs and I know they are anxious to recruit new members.

As for my rowing experience: I rowed for four years in high school
(St. Paul's School in Concord NH, a prep. school) and I didn't row in
college (it wasn't offerred at RPI). I started rowing again two years
ago culminating in my boat competing at the Head of the Charles last year.
Although I have sculled (two small oars per person, usually in a single),
I usually row in an eight with a sweep oar (one large oar per person).
I row competitively with practices at 6am five days per week and races
every few weekends.

My buddy Chris, who I've often mentioned in relation to his marathon running
(and now a new friend of =Bob=), rowed in college. He was rowing
for the Simsbury Rowing Club before moving to NH when he took his
job in Spitbrook.....

My brother rowed for the varsity crew team at Rutgers from '65 to '68,
and he still rows occasionally, for fun.

He told me about something that happened during a race against Columbia
University....seems they were competing on the Harlem River, which
divides the Bronx from upper Manhattan. About three-quartes of the way
through the course, the Rutgers shell hit what appeared to be an aluminum
beer keg that was half submerged. Needless to say, they did not win.

Just catching up after a month off. I rowed for Penn from 1977 to 1981. I was
part of the lightweight crew that managed to lose almost all of its races. But
it was fun anyway.

Obviously jeff, that was before you hit puberty right? Or is you
saying you were part of the lightweight crew is akin to the Sawmain
    saying he's a fast runner?????

    I remain,
pondering if I could qualify as a lightweight????????

Actually, I can totally identify with Jeff.

At a rehearsal the other night a college buddy pulled out some old
photographs of us 15 or 16 years ago, complete with 6" wide ties, and
collar points seemingly down to the nipple line.

The Chainsaw in that photo was 6' tall, 145 lbs soaking wet, with long
sideburns.

I could have rowed lightweight crew in college.

    	Yabbut hello Steven!

I'd *LOVE* to spend a weekend in Hong Kong! Unfortunately, I believe I
have 2 minor probelms that you might be able to help me with. First,
I don't have a passport. Will I need one? Could you get me one?
Second, I don't have a round-trip plane ticket. Could you take care of
    that for me too?

I hope I'm not asking too much in return for my presense.

Bet that big ol' bird would take out a lot of rowers if it came up
short, right?
121.17METSNY::francusMets in '94Wed Mar 23 1994 15:447
Heck, that 747 would also knock laundry off of some lines.

Too bad they are building a new airport, the view at landing and takeoff
at HGO is stunning.

Had a flight instructor that used to love to land like that -- but not
in anything so unwieldy as a 747......

Sounds cool (NOT!)

Figures...my last day after 10 years+ at DEC I find one note on
rowing... [someone forwarded this to me].

Although I wouldn't suspect the interest in this sport to be booming
I'd just thought that I'd enter a note here as a pointer to another
source of information rec.sport.rowing newsgroup on internet...which is
    quite active.

About me and rowing opportunities in NH.

Although I've played about every sport an American kid, teenager and
adult would do, this is my second most loved sport. Started in '76 in
college at WPI in Worcester and then stopped after college. When I
joined DEC in '84 I started running with the Digital Running Club
competing for DEC in the Corporate 10K's. In '85 [or was it '86] I
hurt my knee training for the NY marathon. [would have been my
first...did something stupid in my training]. Since I couldn't run for
6-8 weeks I started rowing again at a small local club. At first I
didn't know the club even existed. Got hooked on the sport all over
    again...

Since then I've remained pretty dedicated on the sport winning many US
Nationals medals, making the US Team 5 times and representing the US
at the World Championship. I'm currently in training for the '95 Pan
American Games, the '95 Worlds and '96 Olympics.

If you live in the NH/MA area, use to row in college and are interested
in 're-entering the sport' please contact me. I belong to a local
club that caters to novice to intermediate level [ability] scullers
from juniors to masters [age]. They are always looking for new
members. You can reach me, at this node for about a month or two [I
will still reside in Spitbrook]...after that check out the r.s.r
newsgroup mentioned above for an enet address.

    Cheers,

    -Jay
