285.0. "Basketall Movies" by TNPUBS::NAZZARO (Ain't no one gonna dog me down) Tue Aug 13 1996 15:39

I posted this in the Celtics notesfile, but things are a bit slow
over there, so I thought I'd enter it here, too.

Somebody asked me what I thought the best basketball movie of all time
was. My first answer was Hoosiers, but there have been other really
good ones, some OK ones, and some lousy ones. Here are all the
basketball movies I've seen, and how I'd rank them. Can anyone think
    of any others?

    REALLY GOOD BASKETBALL MOVIES
    1) Hoosiers
    2) White Men Can't Jump
    3) Hoop Dreams

    OK BASKETABLL MOVIES
    1) Heaven Is a Playground
    2) The Air Up There
    3) Above the Rim
    4) Blue Chips
    5) One on One
    6) The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh

    REALLY LOUSY BASKETBALL MOVIES
    1) Celtic Pride
    2) Fast Break

There's got to be other movies I can't remember. Any help you can
    provice I'd really appreciate.

I'd rate Blue Chips above WMCJ.

What was the movie with Alex English in it?
285.8moviesBIGQ::HOWLANDWed Aug 14 1996 16:458
"Hoosiers" is the best.

"One on One" is the sappiest (Robby Benson).

"The fish..." is the stupidest.

I haven't seen "Pistol Pete" yet, but if what I hear about it is true then it
will most likely surpass "Hoosiers".

Well, according to some folks, all basketball movies are just spinoffs of
"The Paper Lion"

Movies are a spinoff of cave paintings. And caves are a spinoff of
bungholes.

Therefor, only people with bungholes like movies. Excepting some who are
merely left holding the bag...

A search of Alta Vista comes up with a movie called, "Eddie"
starring Whoopee Goldberg and half the NBA. I've never heard of
this one. Anyone see it?

I aint seen it but part of it was filmed across the street at the
Charlotte Coliseum.

They had a_ad in the paper asking anyone who wanted to show up and fill
the Coliseum so it'd look like something. One of the secretaries brought
her son. For some reason the producer/director/guy_in_charge spotted him
and did a close up of him wearing some Knicks garb.

They paid him 100 bucks too.

choice of apparel.

If'n you rent "Amazing Grace and Chuck", and look close enough at the
action at the Garden, you'll get to see a nice shot of me during the
action, back when I had only a few grey hairs!

My son reminded me of "Pistol" last night. He really liked that one.
